Lagos launches Nigeria’s first tele-veterinary call centre

Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems, has launched TELE-VET, Nigeria’s first tele-veterinary call centre, marking a groundbreaking milestone set to transform access to expert animal health care using mobile technology.

Speaking at the event held at Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems, Animal Hospital, Oko-Oba, Agege, Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, described TELE-VET as a transformative initiative that strengthens animal health systems, improves food safety and accelerates agricultural innovation across the state and beyond.

She said technology continued to redefine global food systems, and Lagos, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, remained committed to deploying digital solutions that enhanced efficiency, empowered farmers and safeguarded public health.

The commissioner said TELE-VET addressed long-standing challenges faced by farmers and pet owners, especially limited access to timely and professional veterinary care.

Ms. Olusanya highlighted that TELE-VET built on the existing mobile platforms, M-Agric and M-Health, available on MTN and Glo networks, which provided daily expert tips, mentorship and animal-care guidance.

By dialing *20791#, users can subscribe for N100/day, N300/week, or N500/month, gaining instant access to a variety of services, while all active subscribers can access the Call Centre free of charge.

She said the Call Centre would deliver emergency support, first-aid guidance, disease-prevention information and livestock and pet care assistance, noting that the platform helped farmers reduce costs, save time and access expert care without travelling long distances.

She said TELE-VET would also enhance surveillance and early detection of zoonotic diseases, aligning with the One World, One Health framework that integrated human, animal and environmental health.

The commissioner says TELE-VET sets the stage for future innovations, including livestock and pet health insurance, e-commerce for veterinary products, improved mobility for safe animal transport, and enhanced financing opportunities for farmers, positioning Lagos as a national leader in technology-driven agricultural transformation.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems, Mr. Emmanuel Audu, hailed the initiative as a groundbreaking intervention that would improve service delivery within the state’s veterinary ecosystem.

He says TELE-VET responds to the evolving needs of farmers and pet owners who require swift and professional support to enhance productivity and ensure animal well-being.

Audu noted that the ministry had invested extensively in strengthening the infrastructure, technical systems, and human resources needed to operate a world-class veterinary call centre.

He said the service was a strategic investment in Lagos State’s food security architecture, enabling efficient livestock health management and timely response to potential disease outbreaks.

The permanent secretary said the Call Centre would minimise animal losses, improve farm management practices, and provide timely advisory services to farmers, aligning with the ministry’s mandate to promote sustainable agricultural practices across all 57 LGAs and LCDAs.

He praised the collaboration among veterinary professionals, ICT partners, and technical teams that made the initiative possible.

Audu reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to continuously upgrading the TELE-VET platform to accommodate innovations that improved efficiency and expanded service offerings.

He encouraged residents to adopt the platform fully, noting that its success depended on widespread participation.

The Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Rasheed Macaulay, said the launch of TELE-VET marked a new era in veterinary care delivery in Lagos State. He said the platform provided a practical solution to challenges such as limited manpower, delayed emergency response, and difficulties reaching farmers in remote areas by connecting residents directly to certified experts.

Macaulay added that TELE-VET would  strengthen disease surveillance and reporting across the state, aiding early detection of animal diseases and preventing zoonotic infections.

With real-time consultations, improved documentation, and faster escalation processes, the platform will support frontline veterinarians and promote safer, healthier food systems for all Lagos residents.

Osoba explains why his administration prioritised education over funding pilgrimages

Barely 22 years after leaving office, former Ogun State Governor, Segun Osoba, has explained why his administration focused on supporting the education sector rather than funding Muslim and Christian pilgrimages.

Osoba said that between 1999 and 2003, many pupils were bringing chairs and desks from home, and a significant number could not sit for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) because their parents could not afford the fees.

“Instead of spending millions on religious pilgrimages, we decided it was better to support education by providing chairs and desks and paying WAEC fees to ease the burden on students and their families,” he said.

The APC national leader made these remarks on Sunday after being decorated as a Life Vice Patron of the Abeokuta Club. Former Nestlé Nigeria CEO, Segun Osunkeye, was also honoured with the same recognition.

Osoba further noted that his administration relied entirely on the state’s workforce to execute projects, highlighting rural electrification, rural road construction, and the Abeokuta Hilltop Housing Estate as key achievements. He described the estate as “perhaps the most expensive, most secure, and best estate today.”

“I never brought anyone from outside the state to work with me—not even a messenger. The modest successes recorded during my administration were all thanks to our civil servants, including technocrats who were part of the service,” he said.

Reflecting on his Abeokuta Club honour, the octogenarian elder statesman described it as the “greatest honour” he had received and expressed fulfillment at being celebrated by his own community.

Supporters laud Tinubu’s economic gains, demand reform in nation’s security

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has received fresh commendations from his supporters over what they described as visible improvements in the economy, even as they called for urgent reforms in the nation’s security architecture.

The praises and demands were contained in a statement by the National Coordinator of Disciples of Jagaban (DOJ), Honourable Comrade Abdulhakeem Adegoke Alawuje.

Alawuje said Nigerians across communities were expressing appreciation for the President’s “unrelenting efforts” in stabilising the country’s administrative, security and economic sectors.

He noted that recent drops in food prices had rekindled public confidence in the administration’s economic direction.

He, however, argued that the President had been compelled to assume responsibilities delegated to some officials due to their lapses, insisting that such inefficiency must no longer be tolerated.

According to him, the improvements Nigerians are witnessing are proof that Tinubu is “steadfastly confronting critical national issues.”

The activist maintained that the change Nigerians demanded for years was now unfolding across sectors, affecting even institutions and individuals previously considered beyond reform.

He said religious leaders, public institutions, and the youth were beginning to adjust to the new governance culture championed by the President.

Alawuje urged citizens with constructive contributions to channel them properly rather than wait for invitations, stressing that fixing the system should be a shared responsibility. “We must all jointly compel the system to work,” he said.

He further appealed to the President to harness the expertise of retired security personnel, whom he described as invaluable national assets.

According to him, the government invested heavily in their training and should not overlook them at a time when insecurity remains persistent.

Alawuje took a swipe at public office holders, especially in the security sector, saying those who have failed should not wait for the President to demand their resignation.

He argued that honourable resignation would create room for competent hands to strengthen the nation’s defence operations.

He specifically declared that the Minister of State for Defence should have resigned “by now” to allow more capable individuals to take charge, noting earlier concerns about the suitability of the current defence leadership.

He added that with many disciplined and experienced retired officers available, Nigeria should not be experiencing its current security challenges.

Alawuje reaffirmed the loyalty of Tinubu’s supporters at home and abroad, praying for continued divine guidance for the President “in sunshine and in rain.”

  • Ekiti APC begins e-registration, mobilises support for Tinubu

Ekiti APC begins e-registration, mobilises support for Tinubu

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has commenced its digital membership e-registration exercise as part of efforts to strengthen the party’s structure.

Speaking during the flag-off of the Train-the-Trainers session in Ado Ekiti, the APC State Chairman Sola Elesin said that the e-registration would not only modernise the party’s membership register but also mobilise broader support for President Tinubu’s policies.

He noted that the digital registration was central to rebuilding the party’s support base and ensuring data accuracy for strategic planning.

Elesin noted that the outcome of the last presidential election in Nigeria, propelled the broom party to come up with the programme.

Elesin said: “Prior to the election, we believed we would have 50 million party members who would vote for our president in the election, but the result was released, we had  just over 11 million votes for Mr. President.  This shows that even our party members failed to vote going by the data.

“Since that time, we have been looking for a way to have accurate data about actual number of the members of the party that is the essence of continued digital membership process.  We believe we will have accurate data for whatever we want to organize in the party and to forge ahead.

The State Coordinator of the APC e-registration, Hon. Gold Adesola Adedayo noted that the programme was designed to shore up the party’s membership.

The former Commissioner for Youths in Ekiti State explained that the party decided to do the e-registration to  digitalize the initial  record of the party members.

Adedayo, who is now a commissioner-designate, said, “It is primarily for digitalizing party membership register. It is to give accountability, transparency and of course to enhance service delivery from our party and when we no know our exact figure, then the dividends of democracy will not be difficult to spread to all.

“This is the reason behind this program. We all know that we have a register before now, and we have all registered from  our units to the  wards, the state  and even the federal.

“But the different now ,is that it will be digitalized and we will all have access to it from our phones, in our homes, we can check our membership of the party.  It will also give  us  the opportunity of authenticating the actual numbers of the party members in the state . There will no longer be contradicting figure on membership of the party.

“We are expecting all our members across the 177 wards in the state to register. I know that Ekiti people are for APC and so I am looking at about 70 to 80 percent of the population of Ekiti to turn out in their  large number to register as APC card-carrying members”.

  • Unity of purpose, stakeholders’ collaboration ‘ll end insecurity in Southwest – Gani Adams, Ogunlewe, others

Unity of purpose, stakeholders’ collaboration ‘ll end insecurity in Southwest – Gani Adams, Ogunlewe, others

Unity of purpose and stakeholders’ collaboration can end insecurity and mindless destruction of lives and property, especially in the Southwest, the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has said.

He said such unity will eradicate gaps in intelligence gathering and sharing, as well as response time to incidences of insecurity.

“There has been weak coordination among security actors occasioned by poor collaboration between government security agencies, local vigilantes, traditional institutions, and civil society,” he noted.

He called on leaders at all levels, including governors, local governments chairpersons, traditional rulers and community heads, to come together in the quest to decisively put an end to the insecurity challenge.

He made the call at a virtual International Conference, titled, ‘The importance of unity in strengthening security and preventing genocide in Yorubaland,’ organized by Yoruba One Voice (YOV) Worldwide.

“Unity is the bedrock upon which peace and security are built. In Yorubaland, our strength lies in our ability to come together as one people, transcending differences of origin, religion, or language.

“When we unite, we create a formidable force that can effectively safeguard our communities against threats and violence. The principle of unity is such that rallies people for regional cohesion and integration, and foster loyalty to Yorubaland above sectional loyalties,” he said.

Adams commended the southwest governors on the planned security fund, saying that the development was a direct answer to the kind of unity and collaboration he and other stakeholders have been calling for among the governors.

“With joint security fund that has been approved, it will greatly help to raise the huge resources required for the fight against the terrorists.

“Our governors should assist the Yoruba speaking communities in Kogi and Kwara States. They should invite all traditional rulers and community leaders in those areas for a meeting so as to collectively design the best approach to stop the kidnappings and mindless killings of our people.”

Adams stressed that stakeholders cannot afford to allow the terrorists to create immense collateral damage in the southwest region.

“To be sure, about 50 to 60 per cent of national investments and monuments are domiciled in the southwest. If we do not defend the investments, the coming generation would blame us.

“For instance, part of the information I received was that Fulani herders are bent on exterminating the Yoruba people from Kwara State. They also want to do a similar thing to Yoruba speaking people in Kogi State. You will observe that the assailants are not attacking the Igala and Ebira people in Okene,” he added.

On his part, the Parakoyi Aare Ona Kakanfo, Prof Kolawole Raheem, called for collective action against the bandits who he noted were bent on displacing Yoruba people and dispossessing them of their lands and resources.

The guest speaker, Prof. Adetayo Olurotimi Ogunlewe, bemoaned what he described as systematic targeting of Yorubaland given the patterns of attacks, kidnappings and displacement.

He said that, if unaddressed, the situation could escalate into widespread atrocities or genocide against Yoruba communities.

Ogunlewe, who was a former lecturer at Lagos State University (LASU) and also the Secretary, Lagos Literary Society, therefore called on security stakeholders to launch out viciously against the bandits and terrorists with a view to clearing and exterminating them from their hideouts.

Earlier in his welcome address, Secretary General, YOV, Prince Adedokun Ademiluyi, noted that the grim picture of growing insecurity ravaging Yorubaland and South West Nigeria had reached an alarming level that demanded strategic urgent action.

Ademiluyi said it was in recognition of the severity of the challenge and the urgent need to mitigate the violence and general insecurity occasioned by the invasions, that YOV organised the conference.

Another participant in the conference, who is a prominent member of YOV, Iyalode Abike Ade from the United Kingdom (UK), called for increased campaign and advocacy locally and internationally to raise awareness about all actions against Yoruba communities that can encourage and lead to genocide.

She also canvasses for support for grassroots initiatives to strengthen traditional security structures within legal and human-rights-compliant frameworks.

At the end of the conference, some of the recommendations given by participants included the need to establish a Yoruba Security Coordination Framework to create mechanisms for improved cooperation among local vigilantes, state security agencies, traditional rulers, and community networks for more coordinated intelligence-gathering and rapid response; and a need for regular security stakeholder meeting and conference to cross-fertilize ideas on ways to decisively tackle the challenge of insecurity in Yorubaland.

Other recommendations included creating a joint intelligence-sharing system as part of new measures to confront worsening insecurity in the region; and the urgent adoption of community policing to facilitate the deployment of local and community -security networks to address security challenges.
