Lagos Assembly wades into Royal Gardens Estate, EKEDC dispute

The Lagos State House of Assembly has stepped into the protracted crisis between residents of Royal Gardens Estate, Ajah, and the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), following a petition by the Royal Gardens Residents’ Association (RGERA).

In a letter signed by the Clerk of the House, B. Onafeko, the Assembly’s Committee on Housing invited RGERA representatives to a meeting scheduled for Tuesday, September 23, at the Assembly Complex in Alausa, Ikeja. The session is expected to bring all concerned parties to the table for deliberations on the lingering electricity and governance disputes.

The crisis, which has rocked the once-model estate for over a year, escalated after EKEDC disconnected the community from the national grid on May 26, 2024. Residents have since been forced to rely on diesel generators and solar alternatives. At the height of the dispute was the controversial bulk metering system imposed on the estate, which residents said violates the Electricity Act of 2023.

Under the bulk metering arrangement, the estate was billed collectively, leaving individual residents powerless to reconcile their own energy payments with EKEDC. Despite EKEDC’s stated willingness to switch to direct metering, the estate’s developer, Trojan Estates, has resisted the change, fueling allegations of manipulation and abuse of authority.

Beyond electricity, residents accuse the developer of undermining democratic governance in the estate, imposing decisions without consultation, stifling the residents’ association, and interfering in community projects. Complaints of indiscriminate service charges, power disconnections despite valid payments, and failure to manage sanitation have deepened tensions.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) had earlier attempted to mediate but faced setbacks after Trojan Estates repeatedly failed to attend hearings, instead filing a lawsuit challenging NERC’s authority. The case, brought under Solar Gardens Project Ltd, is currently before Justice D.I. Dipeolu of the Federal High Court, Lagos.

While assuring that the State would be consistent in unlocking opportunities that empower citizens and strengthen investors’ confidence, Governor Abiodun reiterated his administration’s commitment to continually showcasing the State as a hub for technological advancement, with deliberate policies that promote ICT as both an enabler of governance and a magnet for global investors.

LAUTECH nurses, midwives begin indefinite strike over minimum wage

Nurses and midwives at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, have commenced an indefinite strike over the non-implementation of the new National Minimum Wage and long-standing welfare issues.

The strike, which began on Friday, September 19, 2025, was declared by the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), LAUTECH Teaching Hospital Unit, after the expiration of a 15-day ultimatum earlier issued to management of the hospital.

A statement jointly signed by the Unit Chairman, Comrade Ojewumi Olutayo, and Secretary, Comrade Adedokun Foluwake, the association said, despite many engagements and reminders, no meaningful steps were taken to address their demands.

According to the union, Teaching Hospital workers have suffered systemic neglect, with their welfare consistently overlooked compared to counterparts in other state-owned health institutions in Oyo State who are already enjoying improved packages.

The nurses and midwives listed their key demands, which include immediate implementation of the new National Minimum Wage and its consequential adjustments with effect from January 2025, payment of promotion arrears from 2018 to 2024, recruitment of additional nurses to address severe staff shortages, and renovation and proper furnishing of nurses’ stations and restrooms to improve working conditions.

The union said the prolonged delay in meeting these obligations has created financial strain, low morale, and attrition of skilled personnel in the hospital.

They further noted that LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, being the only state-owned tertiary health institution in Oyo State, played a critical role as a referral centre for patients from Oyo, Osun, Kwara, and neighbouring communities.

The union warned that the strike could severely disrupt services for thousands of patients, including pregnant women, children, accident victims, and emergency cases.

The association called on Governor Seyi Makinde to urgently intervene to ensure fairness and equity in staff welfare, adding that industrial harmony is key to sustaining quality healthcare delivery in the state.

They, however, reaffirmed their commitment to professional excellence and quality care; the nurses and midwives maintained that the strike would continue until their demands are fully met.

The Chairman of Epe Local Government Area of Lagos State, Princess Surah Olayemi Animashaun, has again pleaded with residents to show understanding with regard to the current power outage in the council.

She made the plea with the aggrieved residents, protesting over the power outage in a statement she signed and made available to newsmen in Epe.

Animashaun noted that the local government council and two LCDAs (Agbowa/Eredo and Ikosi-Ejinrin LCDAs) were doing everything possible to make sure that power was restored to the council area.

She maintained that the total blackout was not actually the fault of anybody, noting that all hands were on deck to sort it out within a short period of time.

“Indeed, our major problem in this city now is the total blackout, a very sad one, but it was not caused by any of us but vandals in the council, who are bent on damaging our cables.

“As a government, we will continue to encourage all of us to be patient because we know that the government is doing so much in conjunction with Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) to ensure that power returns to the council.

She explained that the plea became imperative in view of the lingering power outage being faced by the council’s residents some months back.

She appealed to all the affected residents and customers to be patient and consider what had happened as a destiny from the Almighty God that nobody could have averted.

2027: Oyo analyst drums support for Akanbi

A political affairs analyst, Adekunle Owuye, has emphasized that Oyo State would experience better governance with Senator Rilwan Adesoji Akanbi in the saddle, describing him as a tested and trusted public administrator with a proven track record.

Owuye noted that Akanbi brings in legislative, executive, and professional experience to the table, an uncommon blend that sets him apart in today’s political landscape.

”During his impactful time as Senator representing Oyo South Senatorial District, Akanbi earned accolades for his performance in the 8th National Assembly. He was also a member of the Federal House of Representatives in 1992. He was known for his active legislative presence, constituency-focused projects, and strong advocacy for policies that uplift the grassroots. His voice was not only loud but effective on the Senate floor.

“He doesn’t have only legislative experience; he also has executive experience. As a Special Adviser on Industry and Economic Matters under Governor Lam Adesina, he contributed to the economic direction of Oyo State at a critical time after the military regime.”

”Sen. Akanbi was also the Chairman of the Poverty Eradication Program (LAMARP) and Chairman of the Special Project Committee, Executive Vice Chairman of the Oyo State Planning Commission, positions that showcased his ability to drive developmental initiatives with strategic insight.

Notably, during that administration, only three Special Advisers were appointed, highlighting the trust and responsibility placed on him.

”Today, through the Rilwan Adesoji Akanbi Foundation (RAAF), his legacy of service continues. From free healthcare programs, family relief support, to youth empowerment, scholarship programmes, and community development programs. RAAF has become a pillar of social support across Oyo State.

“His work through RAAF shows that leadership didn’t end with the office. It evolved into a movement,” Owuye concluded. “Oyo State needs someone who understands both policy and people, and that person is Sen. Rilwan Adesoji Akanbi.”

  • Abiodun congratulates Foursquare Church, seeks collaboration to tackle poverty

Abiodun congratulates Foursquare Church, seeks collaboration to tackle poverty

OGUN State governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has congratulated  Foursquare Christian Church on its  70th anniversary and  called on the church not to relent in being the salt and light of Nigeria especially in times when moral values are under siege.

The governor stated this at the 12th Annual Lecture of Foursquare Christian Church titled: “Poverty Alleviation, Economic Development, and Stability of the Nigerian Economy.”

The lecture held at the Harbour Point, Victoria Island, Lagos was part of activities marking the 70th anniversary of the church.

The governor, who was the chairman of the occasion noted that  the cooperation of faith-based institutions, wealthy individuals, and corporate entities with the government is needed to break the cycle of poverty in the country.

He emphasized that the theme of the public lecture is apt as poverty is currently confronting many nations, including Nigeria, emphasizing that to defeat poverty, all hands must be on deck, as government alone cannot do it.

“As leaders, whether in government, the church, or the private sector, we must collaborate to break this cycle. Poverty is not just an economic statistic; it is a human reality.

“Poverty alleviation is a collective responsibility. Faith-based organizations, private sector players, and community leaders must join hands with us to provide education, vocational training, mentorship, and micro-financing.

“This collaboration not only uplifts individuals but also fosters resilience in communities, making them less vulnerable to poverty and social disabilities.

“Furthermore, the Pentecostal Church can help strengthen moral capital, which is very essential for sustainable development through its emphasis on discipline, stewardship, and accountability.

“Economic stability must be anchored on inclusive growth where opportunities are extended to all citizens, especially the vulnerable,” he said.

Economic development and stability, the governor pointed out, are two sides of the same coin, stressing that without stability, development would be short-lived and poverty would persist.

He admonished the Church to use its teachings and actions to inspire values of hard work, integrity, and accountability, noting that the church could mobilize support for social change, serve as a bridge between citizens and government, and provide support systems that empower families and strengthen society.

“As Nigeria continues its journey towards development and stability, we need the church more than ever to stand in the gap through fervent prayers, sound teaching of God’s word, and exemplary leadership,” he added.

The governor said his administration has embarked on various empowerment programs for women, farmers, and youths, as well as providing free health services to the vulnerable to cope with the current economic realities.

In his speech, the General Overseer of the Foursquare Gospel Church, Pastor Sam Aboyeji, noted that the public lecture is part of the church’s platforms to discuss national issues aimed at finding solutions to the nation’s problems.

He commended Governor Abiodun for demonstrating consistency in the state’s socio-economic development, maintaining that his investment in infrastructure, agriculture, education, youth empowerment, among others, as well as poverty alleviation, has lifted the state to a higher pedestal.

In a lecture titled: “Poverty Alleviation, Economic Development, and Stability of the Nigerian Economy,” the guest lecturer and former Economic Adviser to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, Dr. Doyin Salami, said though various reforms had been carried out in the past to bring the nation’s economy out of the woods, they have not yielded the desired results.

Dr. Salami observed that Nigeria and the People’s Republic of China were on par in the past in terms of development; however, he stated that the Chinese have made tremendous progress in the last 30 years, hence the need for Nigeria to do away with soft reforms and embrace hard reforms.

He contended that though the nation’s economy is growing in nominal terms, the growth picture is not appealing, as an increase in investments does not stimulate and drive growth.

The former Economic Adviser said for the country to experience economic stability and growth, a reliable data framework, secure environment, provision of adequate electricity, quality education and health, as well as human capital development, must be put in place.

He proposed a seven-year tenure for elective officials to enable them to focus on tackling the various challenges facing the country, as the current arrangement does not allow for concentration on governance.
