Alcaraz downs  Djokovic to win ‘dream’ Australian Open

Carlos Alcaraz swept past Novak Djokovic to win his first Australian Open on Sunday and become the youngest man to complete a career Grand Slam, denying the Serbian great an unprecedented 25th major.

The Spaniard was imperious after a slow start in dismissing the 38-year-old, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 on Rod Laver Arena to claim a seventh Slam title and cement himself as undisputed world number one.

He becomes the youngest man in the Open era to win all four majors, adding to his two titles each from Wimbledon and the French and US Opens.

At 22, he surpassed legendary countryman Rafael Nadal – in the crowd to witness the feat – who was 24 when he did the same.

A seventh Slam put him alongside John McEnroe and Mats Wilander and one behind Andre Agassi, Jimmy Connors and Ivan Lendl.

“Lifting the trophy for the first time in Australia was crazy,” Alcaraz said, before writing on a TV camera lens: “Job finished. Four out of four complete.”

He added: “A dream come true. I dreamt about getting an Australian Open and completing the career Grand Slam.”

    He paid tribute to Djokovic.

“You were talking about how I’m doing the things I am, but what you’re doing is really inspiring, not only for tennis players but athletes around the world.”

It was a first defeat for Djokovic in a Melbourne final, having won all 10 previously, leaving him still searching for a landmark 25th  major to better Australia’s Margaret Court, who was also watching on centre court.

Djokovic, striving to become the oldest man to lift a Grand Slam singles trophy, last won one at the US Open in 2023. Since then Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have dominated.

“I must be very honest and say that I didn’t think I would be standing in the closing ceremony of a Grand Slam again, so I owe you the gratitude of pushing me forward in the last couple weeks,” Djokovic said, speaking to the fans in the stadium.

He went on to hint this could be his last time at Melbourne Park.

“God knows what happens tomorrow, let alone in six months or 12 months, so it has been a great ride.”

He also joked with Nadal in the stands, saying: “There are too many Spanish legends. I feel like I was one against two tonight. It’s not fair.”

Both men battled through five long sets in their semi-finals, Alcaraz against Alexander Zverev and Djokovic with Sinner, and recovery was always going to be key.

But they showed few signs of fatigue in another gladiatorial contest.

They both opened with comfortable holds before Djokovic was presented with the first break point chance at 2-1.

Alcaraz saved it, but the aggressive fourth seed kept pressing and converted on his third, then consolidated for a 4-1 lead.

Djokovic was reading Alcaraz’s serve well and once he got in the rallies was authoritative, with a sensational forehand winner earning him two set points.

He claimed the set in a statement 33 minutes, having dominated the big moments.

It was vintage Djokovic, but Alcaraz upped the tempo to break for 2-1 in the second set, pumping his fist when he saved a break point and held in the next game.

Djokovic put drops in his eyes and began rubbing them, unable to tame a now rampant Alcaraz, who broke again for 5-2.

There were some sensational rallies that had the crowd on their feet in set three, which went with serve until Djokovic slapped a forehand wide under pressure to slip 2-3 behind.

He gamely saved four set points at 3-5 but with his energy levels dropping was unable to save a fifth.

On the back foot, Djokovic then saved six break points in an 11-minute opening service game in set four to stay alive.

But Alcaraz ground him down and pounced as Djokovic served to stay in the match to seal a famous win.

It ensured he remained world number one and Sinner two, with Djokovic moving up a place to three.

  • Alcaraz credits  Nadal for  ‘special’ Australian Open title

Alcaraz credits  Nadal for  ‘special’ Australian Open title

Carlos Alcaraz said having Rafael Nadal watching in the crowd helped drive him to a maiden Australian Open title on Sunday and made the win “even more special”.

The 22-year-old downed Serbian great Novak Djokovic 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 to become the youngest man in the Open era to win all four majors.

He had already claimed two titles each at Wimbledon and the French and US Opens.

In doing so he surpassed legendary countryman Nadal, who was two years older when he did the same.

Nadal greeted Alcaraz in the bowels of the stadium afterwards and they hugged and exchanged warm words.

“I mean, this moment is really special, but having Rafa in the stands, it made it even more special, to be honest,” said Alcaraz.

“Lifting the trophy for the first time in Australia was crazy. A dream comes true. I dreamt about getting an Australian Open and completing the career Grand Slam.”

Alcaraz had to rouse himself after a more-than five-hour, five-set epic in the semi-finals against Alexander Zverev, where he suffered cramps and battled back from a 3-5 deficit in the fifth set.

He said he drew inspiration from a similar situation involving Nadal at the 2009 Australian Open.

Back then, the top-ranked Nadal outlasted fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco in what was then the longest match in the tournament’s history at 5hrs 14mins.

Nadal went on to beat Roger Federer in the final.

“After the semi-final, I just thought about that semi-final in 2009 he played against Verdasco, and then he came back physically and played such a great final against Federer and won,” said Alcaraz.

“So I was thinking a little bit about it.

“It’s just about pushing through and having him there, I was like watching him and he gave me some, like, good spirit, good mind-set.”

Before the match, 22-time Grand Slam winner Nadal, who retired from tennis in 2024, tipped Alcaraz to win.

  • Carrick extends perfect start in five-goal thriller against  Fulham thriller

Carrick extends perfect start in five-goal thriller against  Fulham thriller

Manchester United interim manager Michael Carrick extended his perfect start as Benjamin Sesko’s stoppage-time strike sealed a pulsating 3-2 win over Fulham on Sunday.

United took the lead through Casemiro’s first half header and looked in command when Matheus Cunha netted after the interval at Old Trafford.

In an incredible finale, Raul Jimenez’s penalty with five minutes left gave Fulham hope before Kevin’s wonder-goal hauled the visitors level in stoppage-time.

To United’s immense credit, they hit straight back as the much-maligned Sesko’s fourth goal in his last four games sealed Carrick’s third successive victory.

After masterminding surprise wins over Manchester City and Premier League leaders Arsenal, this remarkable encounter suggested former United midfielder Carrick might have the Midas touch.

Unbeaten in their last seven league matches, United moved up to fourth place as their bid to qualify for next season’s Champions League gathers pace.

Reaching the Champions League would be a significant statement for Carrick, who was sacked by second-tier Middlesbrough last year.

Only once in Amorim’s turbulent 14-month reign did United win three games in a row and Carrick has matched that run within weeks of his appointment until the end of the season.

United’s hierarchy may have to consider hiring Carrick on a permanent if their former midfielder can continue his impressive run.

Whether that is enough to appease the 1958 Manchester United fans group is another matter after they staged a protest against the owners outside Old Trafford before kick-off.

Hundreds of fans, some wearing clown masks, gathered to express their frustration with United’s decline under the Glazer family and the lack of improvement since co-owner Jim Ratcliffe took charge of football operations.

The group claimed United are “being dragged through chaos by clown ownership” and are “run like a circus”.

Fans chanted against the owners and held aloft banners as flares filled the air on Sir Matt Busby Way.

Sesko nets stoppage-time winner as Man Utd beat Fulham in thriller

Benjamin Sesko scored a stoppage-time winner as Manchester United made it three wins in a row under Michael Carrick in a Premier League thriller with Fulham at Old Trafford.

United seemed to be cruising to victory as Brazilian duo Casemiro and Matheus Cunha put them two up with goals either side of half-time.

But after Raul Jimenez pulled one back five minutes from time with a brilliant penalty into the roof of the home net, Kevin looked to have snatched a point with a thunderous strike to the top corner.

However, in nine minutes of time added on mainly due to two lengthy VAR checks that resulted in United having a penalty overturned and Fulham a goal disallowed, Sesko turned on to a Bruno Fernandes pass and drilled a shot into the top corner.

It took Ruben Amorim 36 Premier League games to win three in a row as United chief, his only sequence of successive victories.

Carrick has taken just three and was serenaded by the home supporters as his side went back into the Premier League’s top four.

  • Super Eagles striker Moffi joins FC Porto from Nice

Super Eagles striker Moffi joins FC Porto from Nice

Nigerian striker Terem Moffi has completed a loan move to Porto from Nice, with the Portuguese club holding an option to buy the forward for €8m.

The 26-year-old Super Eagles striker finalised the transfer on Friday after both clubs reached an agreement earlier in the week.

Moffi is joining Porto on loan until the end of the season, with the option to make the move permanent set at €8m.

The deal brings an end to a difficult spell in France for the former Lorient player, who had been on medical leave since the incidents involving Nice supporters on November 30.

Porto fought off competition from several clubs, including Turkish side Besiktas, which had offered Moffi a more lucrative salary. There was also interest from teams in France and Scotland.

The Super Eagles striker chose Porto because of the sporting project and the opportunity to work under coach Francesco Farioli, who knows him from their time in Ligue 1.

Moffi has not played for Nice since November 30, following a defeat at Lorient that was overshadowed by serious incidents when players were confronted by supporters after the match.

He was subsequently removed from the first-team picture and had to take the club to a French judicial commission to force them to allow his departure.

The striker managed just two goals in 10 league appearances this season, a sharp drop from his first campaign when he finished as Nice’s top scorer with 11 goals.

Despite his club struggles, Moffi remains a recognised figure in Nigerian football.

He made his Super Eagles debut in 2021 and scored a brace in a 10-0 win over Sao Tome and Principe in 2022.

He was called up to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations as a replacement for the injured Victor Boniface, where Nigeria finished second, losing the final to hosts Ivory Coast.

Porto view Moffi as an immediate solution in attack and will have the option to make the move permanent at the end of the season.

  • Dominant Arsenal thrash Leeds United

    Dominant Arsenal thrash Leeds United

Noni Madueke wasn’t initially meant to start but was pivotal during Arsenal’s 4-0 win over Leeds United in the Premier League (PL),which is the Gunners’ eighth consecutive H2H win over the Whites.

Mikel Arteta was dealt a blow before kick-off with Bukayo Saka suffering an injury in the warm-up.

Leeds tried to ensure the visitors would also be uncomfortable once the action got going at Elland Road, with plenty of intensity on display while Ethan Ampadu smashed a shot over the crossbar.

Martin Zubimendi hit the game’s first shot on target in the 16th minute, although his effort from the edge of the box was routinely gathered by Karl Darlow.

Arsenal started to turn up the pressure with balls being relentlessly played into the hosts’ box from corners, long throws and open play.

That approach eventually paid off in the 27th minute when Zubimendi headed Madueke’s cross past Darlow.

The Gunners remained in control but were left frustrated when nobody was in a position to convert when Viktor Gyokeres headed a Madueke corner back across goal.

Another corner in the 38th minute inspired more celebrations from the away end, though, as Darlow punched Madueke’s delivery in off the post.

Daniel Farke responded with a double substitution ahead of the restart, and his side picked their levels back up with Pascal Struijk’s header marking their first shot on target of the match.

Joe Rodon then impressively denied Gyokeres at the other end before Jurrien Timber headed off-target, but the Dutchman was booked for catching Gabriel Gudmundsson with his arm as the Whites left-back embodied Leeds’ determination going forward.

The hosts were undone again in the 69th minute, though, as Gyokeres met Gabriel Martinelli’s pinpoint cross ahead of Jayden Bogle to net his first PL goal in seven appearances.

Gabriel Jesus then worked space from Struijk and clinically finished to add a layer of gloss to the scoreline in the 86th minute, as Arsenal emphatically recovered from back-to-back winless PL games to go seven points clear at the top of the table, at least for the evening.

  • BRAWL AT THE BRIDGE!  West Ham star is sent off for grabbing Pedro by the THROAT in stoppage time

BRAWL AT THE BRIDGE!  West Ham star is sent off for grabbing Pedro by the THROAT in stoppage time

There were extraordinary scenes at the end of Chelsea’s thrilling comeback win over West Ham, with Adama Traore on the rampage, handbags galore and a red card for a throat-grab.

Chelsea had just knocked the stuffing out of the Hammers by completing a stoppage time comeback from 2-0 down to lead 3-2.

And then chaos was ignited when Traore lost his cool and threw Cucurella to the ground by the scruff of his neck like a ragdoll.

That sent the home fans into a furious frenzy and their team followed suit, piling in. Pedro tried to confront Traore who bull-rushed him and the Brazilian quickly retreated.

Jean-Clair Todibo then came steaming forwards, grabbing Pedro by the throat and pulling their faces close together before his grip was wrestled loose.

At the same time, there was a melee involving seven players shoving each other in close proximity.

When the camera panned back to a furious looking Todibo, Gary Neville on commentary said: ‘The eyes have gone. You’d better stay away from him in the tunnel as well if you’ve got a blue shirt on. He’s not calmed down yet. His head has gone.’

There was also a smaller incident involving Cole Palmer and Konstantinos Mavropanos, who gave the Chelsea star a faint slap but avoided being sent off, unlike Todibo, who was given his marching orders by Anthony Taylor following a VAR check.

When Neville watched the replay again he said: ‘At one point he’s got hold of his neck and looks like he’s trying to eat him!’

Pedro received yellow cards for his part in the incident but it will matter little to him.

He scored the first goal in the comeback and later laid on the assist for Enzo Fernandez to snatch the three points.

After play finally resumed, Chelsea had to defend a corner from the nine men and did so successfully before Taylor had seen enough and blew the final whistle.

Replays would suggest a number of players were lucky to escape without further sanction from the fracas before full-time.

Traore in particular, only picked up a yellow card for his WWE-style wrestling move on Cucurella, who was flung to the turf having wound up the Spaniard with some gamesmanship.

Wolves reject Besiktas offer for Arokodare

Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers have rejected Besiktas’ bid for Tolu Arokodare.

Besiktas, according to transfer expert, Ekrem Konur submitted a €15m bid for the Nigeria international.

Wolves are however only willing to do a deal for between €25m and €30m.

Besiktas are in the market for a new striker after selling England international, Tammy Abraham to Aston Villa this week.

Arokodare only arrived the Molineux from Belgian Pro League club, KRC Genk in the summer of 2025.

Wolves paid Genk €26m to bring the striker to England.

Arokodare has struggled to hit the ground running at the club.

The 25-year-old has scored four times, and provided one assist in 22 appearances across all competitions for Wolves.

  • Beto nets dramatic injury-time equaliser as Everton snatch point at Brighton

Beto nets dramatic injury-time equaliser as Everton snatch point at Brighton

Beto scored a 97th-minute equaliser as Everton rescued a dramatic 1-1 Premier League draw at Brighton & Hove Albion, stretching their unbeaten run on this ground to six matches since 2019 (W3, D3).

Only the league’s bottom two sides had amassed fewer than Brighton’s eight points since the start of December, although that was far from apparent after a positive first-half display.

An opportunistic flick from Danny Welbeck kept Jordan Pickford on his toes before half-chances in the form of a Georginio Rutter volley and a Welbeck header ensured Everton remained on the back foot.

With almost 20 minutes played, the first clear-cut opportunity fell to Kaoru Mitoma, who played a neat one-two with Welbeck before bursting into the box and lifting the ball over Pickford’s legs but narrowly wide of the far post.

Just Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers had fired fewer attempts on target than Everton heading into this one, and by the half-time whistle, the Toffees hadn’t so much as attempted a shot.

Nonetheless, the contest remained goalless at the restart, and it was the visitors who finally got a shot off when the returning Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall dragged an effort wide following some well-worked build-up play.

Also returning to the starting XI after injury, Jarrad Branthwaite then saw his flicked header drop marginally off-target, and the in-form Thierno Barry nearly provided an assist for Dewsbury-Hall, who was thwarted by Bart Verbruggen from close range.

Given the Toffees’ vast improvement going forward, the away fans will have been especially disappointed to see them fall behind with just over 15 minutes to play, as Pascal Gross swept in a first-time effort for his first goal since returning to the Amex.
