EPL: Brobbey’s late strike denies Arsenal victory at Sunderland

Brian Brobbey scored a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser as Arsenal conceded their first goals since September, settling for a 2–2 draw against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats impressed on their Premier League return, matching an Arsenal side that had won their previous 10 games in all competitions.

Sunderland took a deserved first-half lead through Daniel Ballard — a product of Arsenal’s academy — ending the visitors’ remarkable 812-minute run without conceding.

Arsenal responded strongly after the break, with Declan Rice winning possession in midfield to launch a move finished by Bukayo Saka, who fired in at the near post.

Martin Zubimendi later struck the woodwork before Leandro Trossard seemed to have sealed victory with a brilliant 20-yard finish into the top corner.

But Sunderland refused to give up. After David Raya initially denied Brobbey, the substitute struck again in the fourth minute of stoppage time to earn a dramatic point and send the home fans into wild celebration.

The draw leaves Arsenal seven points clear at the top of the table — a gap that could narrow when second-placed Manchester City host Liverpool on Sunday. Sunderland remain unbeaten at home, climbing to third place with the result.

  • EPL: De Ligt scores late equaliser as Man Utd draw Spurs in thriller

EPL: De Ligt scores late equaliser as Man Utd draw Spurs in thriller

Matthijs de Ligt scored an equaliser deep into stoppage time to earn Manchester United a point in a Premier League thriller at Tottenham.

In an astonishing climax to a game the visitors seemed to have control of, Brazilian striker Richarlison appeared to have won the game for Tottenham when he flicked Wilson Odobert’s long-range shot past Senne Lammens.

But in the last of six minutes of injury time, with keeper Lammens up for a Manchester United corner, De Ligt found the net from an acute angle to give his side a point.

There were disbelieving looks from both sides at the end.

Richarlison was almost in tears, having jubilantly celebrated his goal, only to realise it had not proved to be the winner.

Meanwhile, United head coach Ruben Amorim was equally stunned, having watched his side almost toss away a game they appeared to have control of.

Bryan Mbeumo had put the visitors ahead in the first half, heading home Amad Diallo’s precise right-wing cross.

When Lammens made excellent saves to deny Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven after the break, Tottenham looked to be heading for their third successive home Premier League defeat.

However, the boos that accompanied Mathys Tel’s introduction for Xavi Simons midway through the second half turned to cheers when he swivelled on to a left wing-cross six minutes from time, evaded the attentions of De Ligt six and crashed a shot past Lammens.

The relief inside the stadium was palable – but much more was still to come.

Richarlison, the subject of so much criticism recently, thought he had won it. De Ligt had other ideas.

  • Tripple 44’s Ibrahim Adewale completes fairytale move to Swedish champions Mjällby AIF

Tripple 44’s Ibrahim Adewale completes fairytale move to Swedish champions Mjällby AIF

Nineteen-year-old Nigerian forward Ibrahim Adewale, popularly known as “Selica”, has completed a sensational move to Mjällby AIF, the newly crowned champions of Sweden’s Allsvenskan.

The young attacker, who honed his skills at Tripple 44 Football Academy in Bora, Ibadan, becomes the latest product of the Nigerian academy to earn a move to Europe, and now stands on the brink of UEFA Champions League football.

Even as the transfer news makes headlines, Adewale continues to do what he does best, scoring goals. Just days ago, he netted a brace for IF Karlstad Fotboll in a league fixture, further underlining the form that earned him a transfer to Sweden’s top-flight champions.

Adewale’s road to professional success has been one of resilience and belief. After shining for Tripple 44 Academy in the 2023/2024 season, where he contributed 20 goals and assists combined, he attracted interest from several top Swedish clubs, including Malmö FF, IF Elfsborg, and IFK Norrköping.

He trained with these teams, visiting Malmö twice, but administrative hurdles prevented a deal from being finalised.

“When he had 20 goals and assists back home, some clubs said he achieved that against weak teams,” said Samuel Okuku, President of Tripple 44. “Now he’s produced 21 goal involvements in Sweden, including goals in both the league and cup. That’s the perfect response.”

When the opportunity arose to join IF Karlstad, a third-tier Swedish club, Adewale saw it not as a step down but as a chance to prove his worth. It became the stage where he silenced critics and showcased his readiness for the top level.

In his debut professional season with IF Karlstad, Adewale has been one of the revelations of the Swedish Ettan Norra.

Ibrahim Adewale is the player with the most successful dribbles in the league, a testament to his flair, confidence, and technical ability on the ball. He has recorded 13 goals and 8 assists across all competitions, including 12 goals and 5 assists in the league, and a goal in the Svenska Cupen against Umeå FC. His ability to take on defenders and create chances both for himself and his teammates has made him one of the standout performers of the season.

That impressive return has now propelled him directly from the third tier to Mjällby AIF, the reigning Swedish champions who will represent the country in the UEFA Champions League next season, an extraordinary rise for a player who only turned professional months ago.

Behind Adewale’s success lies a broader story of vision and persistence, driven by Samuel Olatunji Okuku, founder and president of Tripple 44.

In November 2021, amid the uncertainties of the post-COVID era, Okuku travelled to Paris for a meeting with a French intermediary introduced to him by an Israeli agent.

The discussion lasted barely 30 minutes, but it would prove to be the key that opened the door to Swedish football for his academy.

“At that time, I was desperate to find a pathway for Abel Ogwuche,” Okuku recalls. “That single conversation became the connection that linked our academy to Sweden.”

Since then, Tripple 44 has built a strong relationship with Swedish football, producing several exports including:

    Abel Ogwuche (Trelleborgs FF)

    Emmanuel Godwin (Trelleborgs FF)

    Ozor (IF Elfsborg)

    Usman Owoyemi Ajibola (IF Karlstad)

    Prince Amos (Vasalunds IF)

    Ibrahim “Selica” Adewale (Mjällby AIF)

     Tripple 44’s Growing Legacy

Operating from its base in Bora, Ibadan, Tripple 44 Football Academy has established itself as one of Nigeria’s most credible grassroots football institutions.

Known for its professionalism, structured training, and focus on player development, the academy blends technical education with discipline and character-building.

“Tripple 44 is not just about producing footballers,” Okuku often emphasizes. “It’s about building men who understand purpose, patience, and professionalism.”

This philosophy is helping reshape how European scouts and clubs perceive Nigerian academies, transforming them from informal setups into organized systems capable of producing players ready for the global stage.

    A Symbol of Hope

Adewale’s rise, from the rugged sandy turf of Bora, Ibadan, where thin strands of grass fight through the soil, to the threshold of Champions League football, is a story of patience, preparation, and faith.

It also serves as validation for the Tripple 44 model, and a source of inspiration for countless young footballers across Nigeria.

As he prepares to take the next step of his career with Mjällby AIF, Ibrahim “Selica” Adewale stands not only as a personal success story, but also as a symbol of what Nigerian academies can achieve with structure, vision, and persistence.

From Ibadan’s grassroots to Sweden’s champions, Adewale’s journey is living proof that from humble beginnings, true champions can indeed emerge.

African Football Holding (AFH) has announced that its highly anticipated Scouting Tournament will take place from November 15 to 20, 2025 in Ikenne, Ogun State, bringing together an unprecedented lineup of international scouts, technical directors, and club representatives from Europe, North America, and beyond.

The week-long showcase is part of AFH’s ongoing effort to create a structured and credible pathway for African footballers to transition from academy level to professional football.

Leading the international delegation is Sascha Werner Empacher, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of SPOCS and African Football Holding, who has been instrumental in building bridges between African academies and major European clubs.

Among the distinguished guests expected at the event are: Giovambattista Martino (Shakhtar Donetsk, Ukraine); Carlos Aalbers, Director of Players and Transfers, NEC Nijmegen (Netherlands); Tufan Das and Jahid Asgarov (Neftçi PFK, Azerbaijan); Vincent van Raam, Head of Recruitment, Charlotte FC (MLS); and Sergio Neveleff, Global Scout, New England Revolution (MLS).

Others include Björn Ganser (Górnik Zabrze, Poland), Johannes and Marcus Noack (MN Germany), Jamie Rietiker-Wright (Göztepe SK/Southampton, Sport Republic Group), Frank Rybak and Jordi van der Starren (both from Germany).

According to Gbenga Abejoye, a representative of African Football Holding, the Ikenne scouting tournament is designed to serve as a true bridge between African grassroots football and the global professional stage.

“Our goal is to provide a credible platform where African players can be seen and properly assessed by legitimate scouts from top clubs around the world,” Abejoye explained. “We are building a structure that ensures potential is not wasted and that talented players have a clear pathway to international football.”

Ikenne has emerged as one of Nigeria’s foremost football development centres, boasting quality infrastructure and a strong tradition of youth training. The town’s serene environment and modern sporting facilities make it an ideal venue for a scouting event of this magnitude.

The tournament will feature select academies and regional teams showcasing top under-20 players, with all matches designed to give participants maximum exposure before international observers.

Earlier in the year, AFH entered into a strategic partnership with Jewels Football Academy, a collaboration aimed at aligning African academy operations with international scouting standards. The synergy has since strengthened AFH’s mission to elevate player development standards and streamline access to global opportunities.

AFH emphasises that the scouting tournament is not a one-off event but part of a larger developmental system. The organisation plans to monitor and mentor standout players post-tournament, ensuring they receive legitimate representation and long-term career guidance.

By combining partnerships, structure, and international expertise, African Football Holding aims to redefine how football talent is discovered, developed, and elevated from Africa to the world stage.

With a star-studded delegation and a vision rooted in professionalism, the 2025 AFH Scouting Tournament in Ikenne stands as a major milestone in Africa’s football evolution, one that could set a new continental standard for talent discovery and global integration.

Amorim wins manager of month award for October

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has won the Premier League manager of the month award for October, the first time he has won the accolade.

Amorim, who became United boss in November 2024, led his side to three top-flight wins last month as he eased the pressure on himself following a slow start to the season.

United started October with a win against Sunderland before they claimed three points at Liverpool – their first Anfield victory since January 2016 – and then went on to beat Brighton 4-2.

“The credit is not mine, the credit is for my players,” said Amorim, whose side were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by League Two Grimsby Town in August.

“They did really well, and our goal is to win the next one [award], because it means we win football matches and that is our goal.”

Familiar foes renew rivalry in NPFL Matchday12 blockbusters

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 12 fixtures promise another thrilling weekend of top-flight action across the country, with fierce derbies and crucial battles set to unfold.

The action begins this evening in Katsina, where Katsina United welcome Barau FC in the curtain-raiser. But the standout fixture of the round comes on Sunday in Umuahia — the Abia Derby — as Abia Warriors face Enyimba International.

Last season’s clashes between the two Abia rivals produced intense drama, and another high-octane encounter is expected. The Umuchineke Boys sit second on the log with 21 points, while the People’s Elephant occupy seventh with 16 points, both eager to make a statement in the title race.

Another mouthwatering tie takes place in Enugu, where Rangers International host Shooting Stars at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium tomorrow. The Flying Antelopes were held goalless by El Kanemi Warriors in Maiduguri, while 3SC played a 1-1 draw at home with Katsina United. The Oluyole Warriors famously triumphed in Enugu last season courtesy of an Ikouwen Utin’s thunderbolt, and they’ll be keen to repeat that feat.

Rangers have struggled for consistency, failing to win a game in their last three games, while Shooting Stars are seeking redemption after losing their five-game unbeaten run to Wikki Tourists in Bauchi and the home draw versus Katsina United.

In Bauchi, Wikki Tourists will aim to extend their three-match unbeaten streak when they host Niger Tornadoes. Abdu Maikaba’s side earned a valuable point in Kano against Barau FC to climb to 14th place, while the Ikon Allah Boys are under pressure to respond after last weekend’s home defeat to Abia Warriors.

Elsewhere, Kano Pillars take on Bayelsa United at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium, Katsina where they are currently banished to, while Warri Wolves and Ikorodu City clash in Ozoro.

In Lafia, league leaders Nasarawa United will defend their top spot against Kwara United in a North Central derby. The Solid Miners reclaimed first place with a vital 2-1 win over Remo Stars on Thursday and will look to consolidate their lead with another win.

Three matches are scheduled for Monday: Remo Stars host El Kanemi Warriors in Ikenne as they seek to bounce back from Thursday’s defeat; Plateau United entertain Bendel Insurance in Jos; and Khalifat FC battle Rivers United in Owerri to round off the Matchday 12 fixtures.
