The South African referee appointed for the Super Eagles‘ 2026 World Cup Playoffs clash against Gabon is most likely to be replaced, according to an informed source at CAF.

However, the NFF swiftly petitioned FIFA on this appointment, arguing that given the bitter rivalry between Nigeria and South Africa during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the assigned referee may not be impartial in the discharge of his duties.

According to journalist Osasu Obayiuwana quoted an informed CAF source that Abongile will now be replaced.

“(South African referee) Tom (Abongile) will not officiate Nigeria vs Gabon and will be replaced soon,” Obayiuwana quoted the source on X.

Aubameyang leads 27-man squad against Super Eagles

Gabon head coach Thierry Mouyouma has unveiled a 27-man squad for their crucial CAF World Cup playoff encounter against the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Soccernet.ng reports.

The match is slated to be played on Thursday, November 13, at the Stade Prince Moulay El Hassan in Rabat, Morocco.

Gabon’s selection features an experienced blend of veterans and emerging stars, headlined by captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who remains the nation’s all-time top scorer with 39 goals in 83 appearances. The 36-year-old striker, formerly of Arsenal, Chelsea, and Barcelona, is expected to lead the Panthers’ attack as they chase a first-ever World Cup qualification.

Mouyouma’s list also includes Mario Lemina, the combative midfielder who plays alongside Victor Osimhen at Galatasaray, as well as Denis Bouanga, whose dazzling club form has made him one of Gabon’s most reliable goal threats.

Youngsters Jonathan Do Marcolino and Royce Openda of Bordeaux earned their first international call-ups, while Alex Moucketou-Moussounda returns to bolster the defence after missing recent fixtures.

The inclusion of several fresh faces signals Mouyouma’s intent to balance experience with energy ahead of a decisive test against one of Africa’s heavyweights.

Osimhen is an unpredictable striker, says Gabon coach

Gabon’s coach, Thierry Mouyouma, has revealed plans to devise a special tactical approach to contain Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen during their 2026 World Cup qualifying playoff.

Mouyouma described Osimhen as an unpredictable striker, citing his ability to play in behind and excel at set pieces and corners.

“We have to defend as we wouldn’t defend against just anyone. How do we actually defend against him?

“This type of player can be unpredictable, but he also loves playing in behind.

“The ability to reduce the distances behind us is one way, but even if you solve this problem, he has another side to his game, set pieces, and corners.

“That’s where the complexity lies. That’s where the work of a coach becomes interesting, because we are going to dissect, debate, and agree on a common defensive strategy.

“This Nigerian team could stay further back. We need to be able to take the match into the opponents’ half of the pitch. I think that’s the solution to the problem today.”

Osimhen has been in top form, scoring six goals in five matches for Nigeria and recently netting a hat-trick in the Champions League against Ajax Amsterdam. He currently leads the UEFA Champions League goal-scoring chart.

The tournament kicks off at 9:00 a.m. at the Eagle Club, Surulere, Lagos, and the organisers have extended an open invitation to the public to join what they describe as “a celebration of courage, community, and movement for good.”

Jointly organised by Parkinson’s Africa and the Adewunmi Desalu Parkinson’s Foundation (ADPF), the annual event has become a beacon of hope, shining a light on the powerful role of physical activity in managing Parkinson’s Disease, a progressive neurological condition that affects movement, coordination, and balance.

Over 400 participants are expected at this year’s event, including people living with Parkinson’s, caregivers, healthcare professionals, advocates, corporate teams, and football enthusiasts.

The organisers describe the tournament as “a perfect blend of sports and advocacy,” using walking football, a slower, low-impact version of the game, to highlight the benefits of exercise and social connection in Parkinson’s care.

Founder of Parkinson’s Africa, Mrs. Omotola Thomas, said the initiative goes beyond competition to embody resilience and togetherness.

“Walking football is not just a tournament, it is a celebration of resilience, camaraderie, and the joy of staying active, especially for those living with Parkinson’s. The excitement and participation we see among our Parkinson’s warriors during the tournament and monthly walking football block sessions at the ADPF Centre show that life with Parkinson’s can still be active, purposeful, and joyful.” Thomas said.

The one-day tournament will feature friendly matches between registered teams, awareness sessions where people living with Parkinson’s and caregivers will share personal stories, and community-building activities filled with music, entertainment, and fun for all ages.

According to the organisers, the event also serves as an opportunity for corporate organisations to show support for a social cause that promotes health, dignity, and inclusion.

Participating brands stand to gain visibility among a diverse audience while contributing meaningfully to improving the lives of people affected by Parkinson’s disease.

Both Parkinson’s Africa and the Adewunmi Desalu Parkinson’s Foundation reaffirmed their commitment to building a society where those living with the condition can move freely, access care, and thrive without stigma.

  • Nigeria v. Gabon: NFF Protests FIFA official appointments for W’ Cup Play-off

Nigeria v. Gabon: NFF Protests FIFA official appointments for W’ Cup Play-off

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has formally lodged a protest with FIFA regarding the selection of South African and Beninese officials  for the upcoming World Cup qualifying playoff between Nigeria and Gabon. An NFF chieftain has characterized these appointments as a violation of neutrality and a potential threat to the Super Eagles’ chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

FIFA’s match appointment list, signed by Gordon Savic, FIFA’s Head of Qualifiers & International Matches, lists South Africa’s Abongile Tom as the centre referee, supported by South African assistant Zakhele Thusi Granville Siwela and VAR head Akhona Zennith Makalima. Benin’s Hugues Alain Djovi has also been named as the Referee Assessor.

The NFF official expressed concern over what they see as a blatant conflict of interest, given that both South Africa and Benin were part of Nigeria’s qualification group earlier in the campaign. The official stated, “This is clear insensitivity  on the part of FIFA and CAF, as both South Africa and Benin were in the same group with Nigeria. Why bring officials from these countries when we are facing Gabon?”

The NFF quickly submitted a letter of protest to FIFA, highlighting the potential for bias due to the officials’ national affiliations. The protest emphasized that “neutrality is a fundamental principle in international officiating” and warned that the officials’ proximity to Nigeria during the group stage could jeopardize the match’s integrity.

The tension between Nigeria and South Africa was underscored by recent remarks from South Africa’s Sports Minister, Gayton McKenzie, who expressed his desire for Nigeria not to qualify for the World Cup during a radio interview in Johannesburg.

The Nigeria vs. Gabon playoff is scheduled for November 13 at the Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat, Morocco. The winner of this crucial match will move on to face the victor between Cameroon and DR Congo in the next round of the African playoffs on November 16. The overall winner will secure a spot in the Inter-Continental Play-Off set for next March in Mexico.

    • Franco-Malian leads crew out Sunday for Play-Offs

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has declared that leading Nigeria to a fourth Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title is his top priority, describing his role as both an honour and a personal mission.

Chelle, who took charge in January 2025, has reignited the team’s form with four wins and two draws in six matches — collecting 14 of a possible 18 points in World Cup qualifiers.

In an interview with CAFOnline.com, Chelle expressed deep pride in managing the three-time African champions.

“It’s something huge — Nigeria is a massive team with incredible aura and heritage. Coaching this side is a source of immense pride,” he said.

Born to a French father and Malian mother, Chelle emphasized that his role transcends football:

“For me, this is about unity, respect, and values beyond sport. I may be French-Malian by birth, but now, I am fully Nigerian in spirit and commitment.”

Nigeria will face Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania in Group C of AFCON 2025, and Chelle insists there are “no small teams.”

“We’re going to Morocco to win. That’s the objective,” he stated confidently. “If we arrive in form after the playoffs, stopping us will be very difficult.”

Meanwhile,  Chelle will reportedly  lead part of the Super Eagles backroom staff to Morocco for the 2026 World Cup Playoffs.

The Super Eagles crew will fly out from Abuja Sunday morning.

The training camp in Rabat will open Sunday ahead of semifinal Playoff against Gabon on November 13, which has a kick-off time of 5pm.

The winners of this clash will battle with the winners of the other semifinal between DR Congo and Cameroon for the sole representation at the Intercontinental Playoffs in Mexico in March 2026.
