Emenike injury not serious – official

Nigeria striker Emmanuel Emenike’s injury is not serious,

while a scan will be carried out for Victor Moses, officials have disclosed.

Emenike injured his right leg during the semi-final victory over Mali while shooting for goal, but team spokesman Ben Alaiya said it was not a serious injury as the doctor is expected to confirm this later Thursday.

Alaiya said, “Emenike’s injury is not serious, he had just a knock which is minor. He should be fit for final, but we are waiting for the medical report on him which should be ready by lunch time.”

Emenike has scored four goals so far in the tournament with two assists to top the goals chart at the AFCON in South Africa.

He suffered what look like a hamstring injury while shooting from long range at goal against Mali on Wednesday.

Eagles coach Stephen Keshi disclosed that a scan will be carried out on Chelsea winger Moses, who also picked up an injury against Mali.

“We hope it is not serious and he will play the final,” said Keshi.

  • Burkina Faso to appeal Pitroipa dismisal

Burkina Faso to appeal Pitroipa dismisal

The Stallions of Burkina Faso will give a fight to see that the Confederation of African football rescind the red card handed to their star striker Jonathan Pitroipa in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations semi final duel with Ghana on Wednesday 6 February 2013, futaa.com has gathered.

Leading the call for a reversal is the Stallions captain Charles Kabore who argued that Pitroipa’s red card for diving which makes him eligible for Sunday’s African Cup of Nations final against Nigeria was wrong.

Pitroipa was shown a second yellow and sent off in the final few minutes of extra time of Wednesday’s victory over Ghana, leaving the underdog Burkinabes without their two best attacking threats for their first ever African final.

Alain Traore was already out with injury, while Kabore and coach Paul Put both disagreed with Tunisian referee Slim Jdidi’s decision to send off Pitroipa and rule him out of the decider after he went down in the penalty area.

Kabore said -that video must be reviewed, while Put called the second yellow card for diving “ridiculous.”

CAF is yet to make any statement on the issue as many have rated the officiating at this year’s Afcon quite low.

  • This is Yobo’s team, says Enyeama

This is Yobo’s team, says Enyeama

Nigeria goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama aka The Magnet will step aside and allow defender Joseph Yobo lift the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations title should Nigeria defeat Burkina Faso in Sunday’s final.

Yobo has lost his place in the Nigerian starting 11 following strong performances from Godfrey Oboabona, Elderson Echiejile, Efe Ambrose and Kenneth Omeruo in the team’s last four matches in the competition.

It is highly unlikely that Yobo will start Sunday’s final against the Stallions but Enyeama says he will not hesitate to step aside and allow Yobo lift the Afcon trophy in the event of a Nigerian victory.

“Jay (Joseph Yobo) is the captain and if we win on Sunday, and I know we will win, he will just go out there and pick his cup,” Enyeama said.

Enyeama then stressed that he was not the Nigerian captain but was merely holding brief for the Fenerbahce defender who remains the leader of the Super Eagles.

“I am not the captain; I am merely putting on the (arm) band. Yobo is the man and he deserves to lift the trophy if we win and we will win.

“He has served Nigeria all these years and will lift his cup on Sunday,” he concluded.

The game between Nigeria and Burkina Faso will be played at the First National Bank (FNB) Stadium, Johannesburg on Sunday from 7pm.

Ideye hails Eagles mentality : Promises more goals in finals

Dynamo Keiv of Ukrain forward, Brown Ideye has said that the Super Eagles have the right mentality that will secure the Africa Cup of Nations trophy in the finals slated for South Africa on Sunday.

“I am very proud and happy with our mentality. We have shown the world that we are the team to beat in Africa. Nobody gave us a chance but we had to motivate ourselves. Because we are all professionals and we know the pride in winning a trophy. I am very much proud once again and I believe winning the trophy on Sunday is a new beginning for Nigerian football,” Ideye said.

He added: “After our first game, we were totally condemned but we have shown that we are not failures. But I will still like to thank everybody because without those criticisms we might not have gotten to this stage but we are always on course to make the country proud.

“It’s obviously a big challenge for us and I believe we will end it well.

“It’s always an important time. We have shown the desire to win the trophy. The match against Ivory Coast and Mali have increased our confidence.”

  • West Brom braced for Osaze bid

West Brom braced for Osaze bid

West Bromwich Albion are bracing themselves for major interest in Peter Osaze Odemwingie as the loan transfer window re-opens.

Reports suggest Crystal Palace have lined up an audacious move for Osaze. The Eagles are willing to pay an initial loan fee to Albion for the 31-year-old forward, with a view to making his deal permanent in the summer if they are promoted to the Premier League.

Whether or not Palace could afford his £39,000-a-week salary during this period remains to be seen – they might seek help from Albion – but the Londoners have received £15million from the sale of Wilfried Zaha to Manchester United.

Although Osaze is still regarded as a major first-team player for Albion, Steve Clarke is well aware that the player’s actions during his on-off transfer saga with Queens Park Rangers have not gone down well inside his dressing room.

However, it remains to be seen whether the Nigeria international would fancy a move to play in the Championship, not least as his move to Queens Park Rangers was mainly motivated by a huge salary near to £70,000-a-week. His exit would also significantly weaken Albion’s squad.

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace boss Ian Holloway has revealed that Odemwingie has been offered to Palace on loan, but doesn’t think it’s likely to happen.

At his Friday press conference at the Eagles’ training ground, he said: “I haven’t got a clue about that. Someone contacted the chairman. I was asked would I want him? I said yes.

“I don’t really think that’s a realistic target for us personally.”

  • Anichebe congratulates Eagles

    Anichebe congratulates Eagles

Nigeria and Everton forward Victor Anichebe has taken to the social media to congratulate his Nigerian teammate for progressing into the final stage of the ongoing 2013 africa Cup of Nation.

The super Eagles defeated the Eagles of Mali 4-1 courtesy the first half goals from Elderson Echiejile, Brown Ideye and Emmanuel Emenike, and one from Ahmed Musa in the second half.

He tweeted: “For the Super Eagles team set to to lift its third AFCON trophy for the third time i want to say it is a job well done so far. Congratulation Pals!”

The dropped Eagles ace who dismissed thoughts of teammate Jelavic being a threat to his place in the Everton squad said the Super Eagles will lift the AFCON trophy no matter who emerges as its opponent be it Ghana or B/Faso.

Anichebe has started Everton’s last two games with Jelavic emerging from the bench on both occasions a role the Nigerian has impressed in this term.

After starring in the 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion last Wednesday, Anichebe was a perpetual thorn in the side of Aston Villa on Saturday, scoring Everton’s first equalizer and earning the plaudits of both manager and his teammates.

  • ENYEAMA REVEALS: I was trained by Barca coach for AFCON

ENYEAMA REVEALS: I was trained by Barca coach for AFCON

Assistant Captain of the Super Eagles, Vincent Enyeama has told SportingLife that he was knocked to shape by coaches from Barcelona, Israel and Turkey and also surrendered the winning of the 2013 AFCON to almighty God.

Soccer fans in South Africa have been amazed and thrilled by the awesome form of the Israel based goalkeeper who has been the stand-in Super Eagles Captain since Nigeria’s match against Ethiopia.

He, however, confessed to SportingLife that it was as a result of hard one month training in the hands of coaches from Barcelona, Israel and Turkey that brought out the best in him in the on-going 2013 AFCON in South Africa.

“I will give much credit to my coaches because I had coaches from Barcelona, Israel and Turkey they really helped me. We had one month training together before the commencement of the final build up for the Nations Cup,” he said.

He also declared that he has never worried about rejection and condemnation from Nigerians most especially when he was not having good games since he is aware of the emotional attachment of Nigerians to football.

“ It is not a new thing to be criticized by Nigerians. I was criticized before coming to the Nations Cup but I thank God for where we are today. I am used to this because I have played for this country for 11 years and I can tell how we react to matches and results. When you make a mistake my people will come down hard on you pom, pom, pom,” he said with laughter.

He was also spiritual about Nigeria’s chances of winning the AFCON Trophy. “God is author and finisher of everything if He wishes us to win we will win, if not there is nothing we can do about it,” he added.

  • Cycling coach confident of producing best cyclists

Cycling coach confident of producing best cyclists

Samaila Usman, Head Coach, Kaduna State Cycling Association, said on Wednesday that Kaduna State would soon gain national supremacy in the sport.

Usman made the remark during a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

The coach stressed that the performance of the state’s cyclists at the recently-concluded Garden City Cycling Championship in Port Harcourt was an indication of what lies ahead.

NAN reports that Ibrahim Usman of Kaduna State carted away the most valuable and the most improved cyclists trophies in the junior category of the competition which took place on Feb. 3.

Usman added that the state’s cycling team had been making steady progress since 2009, when it hosted the 16th edition of the National Sports Festival.

“My team is making a tremendous impact in cycling and I am certain that Kaduna will, in the nearest future emerge as the best.

“The boys we used in the “Kada City Games’’ which the state hosted have improved over time because their performances have showed that they have,”he said.

The coach pointed out that in spite of lacking the requisite equipment to boost their performance, the athletes have continued to excel at competitions.

“My teams was not having the best equipment at the championship, yet we came back home happy knowing that we had achieved something.

“Some states came with bicycles that were more sophisticated than ours both in quality and performance; but we managed to conquer them,” he said.

Usman appealed to the state government and private organisations to offer more support, adding that cycling would soon enhance the state’s sporting profile.

“I hereby appeal to the state government and private organisations to fully support and provide modern bicycles for our cyclists.

“They have proven that they are a reliable bunch of talents, and they have also proven that they can take cycling to its pinnacle if given the support,” he said.

NAN recalls that Team Kaduna won one gold and one bronze medal in the cycling event of the “EKO 2012’’ sports fiesta.

  • Home-based players have done well — Disu

Home-based players have done well — Disu

Tunde Disu, a former Flying Eagles Coach, on Wednesday commended the performance of home-based players with the Super Eagles at the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in South Africa.

Disu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the players had given a good account of themselves at the continent’s flagship football tournament.

He said the idea of having a blend of domestic league players, and Europe-based professionals in the team, had turned out to be workable enterprise.

NAN recalls that Stephen Keshi included six home-based professional players, in his 23-man squad for the AFCON.

“Keshi’s experiment has worked, even though it took a while before the team could hit its stride. They now know when to defend and attack, using the 4-3-3 formation, and the home-based players have shown that they deserved to be in the team,” he said.

Disu, who was also a former Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), told NAN that the inclusion of home-based players in the team would inspire others to perform better.

“The skill and confidence the players have exuded in a tournament of the magnitude of the AFCON will no doubt inspire the country’s domestic league players to step up their play.

“And the clubs in the domestic league will benefit from the development, because their players will play better for possible invitation to the national team.

“An exceptional performance by these players will certainly attract the attention of foreign clubs across the world,” he added.

  • Burkina Faso beat Ghana 3-2

    Burkina Faso beat Ghana 3-2

In a match marred by poor refereeing it was poetic justice for Burkino Faso, as they beat the Black Stars of Ghana on penalties in their Africa Cup of Nations semi-final.

Burkina Faso made three changes to their starting line-up from the match against Togo, with captain Moumouni Dagano, Issouf Ouattara and Wilfried Sanou dropping to the bench and striker Aristide Bance – who had a stormer of a match – and midfielders Florent Rouamba and Prejuce Nakoulma taking their place.

For Ghana, midfielder Mubarak Wakaso was awarded a start following a good performance against Cape Verde in the quarter-finals.

Shortly after the start Burkina Faso had a penalty shout when Jonathan Pitroipa was pushed over in the area by his Rennes clubmate John Boye, but the referee was not interested.

John Pantsil pulled up mid-stride with what looked like a hamstring injury shortly afterwards, and was replaced by Solomon Asante on 10 minutes.

13 minutes in Ghana took the lead through a penalty, after an innocuous-looking challenge from Mady Panandetiguiri on Christian Atsu. Wakaso converted to give the Black Stars the lead, although the crowd where insistent that Pitroipa’s shout was stronger.

Pitroipa continued to look dangerous for Burkina Faso, almost creating a chance every time he was on the ball, while Wakaso had another chance for Ghana, trying a shot from range that was kept out by the good judgement of Daouda Diakite.

Nakoulma had the best chance of the half for the Burkinabe, hitting wide when he should have forced a save from Ghana keeper Fatau Dauda.

Asante then should have made it 2-0 just before half-time, after some great work by Kwadwo Asamoah on the left, but the Berekum Chelsea man hit over the bar from 10 metres out.

Just after half-time Bance came close with a header, which was palmed away by Dauda, and Asamoah Gyan hit the woodwork with a toe-poke in the area a few minutes later.

But Burkino Faso got the equaliser shortly after, taking advantage of a rare chance, with Bance keeping his cool to hit home from 40 metres out.

Shortly after that Bance was in the thick of things once again, sending a free-kick narrowly wide.

Bizarre scenes followed when Gyan sent a header over the bar, and then fell to the ground and was kicked in the groin by Paul Koulibaly, who was lucky to get away with a yellow.
