    Nigeria train rumbles into Durban

THE Super Eagles would left Rustenburg on Monday for Durban, venue of their semi final duel with the other Eagles of Mali on Wednesday.

Wednesday’s showdown at the Moses Mabhida Stadium is a big opportunity for the Eagles to make amends for disappointing Durbanites in particular and South Africans in general during the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals.

After losing their first two matches against Argentina in Johannesburg and against Greece in Bloemfontein, the Eagles still stood a chance to reach the World Cup Round of 16 if they defeated Korea Republic.

At the Moses Mabhida Stadium on June 22, 2010, the Eagles, roared on by a capacity crowd, could only manage a 2-2 draw with the Koreans, following a couple of horrendous misses, and crashed out of the first World Cup on African soil at group stage.

On Wednesday, the Eagles will have the same capacity crowd on their side as South Africans have switched allegiance to Nigeria following a gorgeous display against Cote d’Ivoire on Sunday, and the fact that their own Bafana Bafana were eliminated by the Malians. Nigeria will welcome back midfield lynchpin Fegor Ogude, who missed Sunday’s clash after being suspended for earning two yellow cards in the group stage.

  • EAGLES SOAR FROM UNDERDOGS TO TOPDOGS

EAGLES SOAR FROM UNDERDOGS TO TOPDOGS

THE story of Super Eagles’ incredible show of character and strength against an Ivorian team rated as the best in the continent and among the best in the world, shall be fully told one day. For now, we can only tell a part of it.

Did the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire walk into a sucker punch? Before Sunday’s Cup of Nations quarter final match at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace, the Eagles were a lowly 52nd on the FIFA ranking while the Elephants were high up there in 14th.

The Ivorian team is fully matured and seasoned, with thoroughbred gladiators and warriors who take no hostages. They were the only team at the championship that guaranteed quarter finals ticket for itself after maximum points in their first two matches.

In contrast, Nigeria is re-building, and following 1-1 draws against Burkina Faso and Zambia, and 78 minutes of a drab, scoreless tie with Ethiopia, looked to be on the way out of the tournament. Victor Moss rescued the situation by winning and converting two penalty kicks within the last 10 minutes and the Eagles limped into the last eight behind Burkina Faso.

On Sunday afternoon, NFF President Aminu Maigaria and Chairman of Technical Committee Chris Green met players and officials of the Super Eagles at lunch in their Hunters’ Rest nest. Maigari told the players that they could do it, that the match was the final before final and that President Goodluck Jonathan, GCFR insists that he wants to come for the Final match, on condition that the Eagles get there.

Skipper Joseph Yobo responded by saying that the boys were battle-ready. “We are ready for this match. We all realize it’s a massive game and test of character and we will go in there to do Nigeria proud.”

At the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace, the majority of the 25,000 crowd rooted for the Ivorians. To some, it was a mis-match. But when the game started and the Eagles took the match to their more fancied opponents, the voices of Nigerian supporters became louder.

A titanic match it was, comparable to some of the best matches that the Cup of Nations has seen in its 56 years. There was no time during the game that anyone could say for sure which team would win. Emmanuel Emenike’s thunderbolt from a short free-kick was almost cancelled out immediately from another free-kick. Before these, Emenike had blown over a good pass on the edge of the box by Ideye and Didier Drogba came close after controlling a pull-out in the box.

And who could have guessed that the winner would come from home-boy Sunday Mba, who ran the length of the Ivorian half of the field before cracking a shot that Souleman Bamba deflected high above Barry into the net?

NFF President, Alhaji Aminu Maigari, said: “I am very happy because the analysts gave the match to the Ivorians even before a ball was kicked. But I knew that we could do it and I told the boys that 170 million Nigerians were banking on them to make them happy.

“Now, we have to try very hard to put this behind us and concentrate on the semi final with Mali in Durban on Wednesday. We don’t have too many hours to celebrate and linger over this win before that game.”

NFF Executive Committee member Shehu Adamu added: “Certainly, the Eagles have delivered. Everyone knows that we’re re-building, but for them to have shown this much character and triumph over this fantastic bunch of Elephants shows that we now have a team that will always make us proud.”

Victory over the Elephants means that Nigeria has lost only ONE of NINE Cup of Nations quarter final matches since the quarter final round came with the instalment of 12-team finals in 1992.

DROGBA: NIGERIA WILL WIN 2013 AFCON

DESPITE losing 2-1 to Nigeria on Sunday in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-finals, Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba hailed the Super Eagles for their inspiring outing at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium and said the team could win the tournament if they perform against others like they did against them.

“I was very impressed with the Super Eagles’ performance against us (Ivory Coast). It’s proof of hard work, relentlessness and the sign of a world-class team in preparation,” he said, after the game that shattered the AFCON dream of the highly-rated Ivorian side.

“I don’t really see any team that can withstand Nigeria for the rest of the tournament. They keep improving by each game and level of the competition. That shows it’s a hardworking and resilient outfit. If they must take the trophy home they have to keep working, be creative and challenge any side like they engaged us.

“Wishing for and seeing victory is not enough. I feel this is Nigeria’s time but they must deserve it by proving it more on the pitch. The fact that the team arrived with a number of home-based players means we have to give them praise because that tells us there is football even within the continent,” he said.

The former Chelsea striker also sent comforting words to his home fans, a number of whom are holding him responsible for the team’s debacle at the tournament.

“Fans ought to know that football is sometimes funny and bizarre. Sometimes you play well and you lose and others time you don’t put up a good game but you win. We did our best, it didn’t work out. We’re taking responsibility and also thanking fans and asking them to bear with the team that better days are definitely ahead.”

  • IVORIANS BLAME DEFEAT ON COACH’S INEXPERIENCE

IVORIANS BLAME DEFEAT ON COACH’S INEXPERIENCE

UNNERVING silence swept through Abidjan and its neigbouring towns on Sunday as the Super Eagles of Nigeria trashed the highly favoured Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire.

The game, which was apparently dominated by the Eagles, ended 2-1.

The Eagles clinched the semi-final ticket in a highly technical game that left Ivorian fans, analysts and players stunned at the poor performance of the Elephants.

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) who went round some viewing centres in Abidjan, observed that many fans sat speechless for the duration of the game.

“What happened to the Ivorian team?,” a sports analyst, Anne N’guessan asked.

N’guessan said the Elephants put up the worse performance since the commencement of the tournament.

“Right from the blow of the whistle from the start, the Elephants were just trying to catch up with the pace of the Nigerians.

“Our coach, Sabri Lamouchi, saw it, but he did not effect early changes to alter the rythm of play.”

Fans, who were seen in groups after the game, said the Nigerian team was a better side in all departments of play.

Bienvenue Yao, a fan said: “we were playing like one village team that the Eagles were using for training.

“All our wings were clipped and we were completely absent.”

NAN reports that the highly optimistic fans, who have a culture of combing the streets with the Elephants’ orange, green and white colours, quickly pulled off after the games.

Salif Keita said he expected the Elephants to trash the young Nigerians, 4-0.

“We were still stunned by the outcome of the game and by the beauty of the Nigerian side.

“Our national team needs an overhaul from the coach to the players.”

Unlike the aftermath of previous matches, roadside bars were empty but for a handful, who stayed back to analyse the encounter.

NAN reports that viewing centres set up by telecom outfits and other companies were deserted at the end of the match.

Meanwhile, Nigerians in Cote d’Ivoire took to the streets to celebrate, although cautiously.

Jude Okafor, a businessman in Abidjan, said the Nigerian team was “impressive”, credting the coach, stephen keshi, for the finishing touch on the team.

NAN reports that in Adjame, Treichville and Makori towns in Abidjan, pockets of Nigrians also took to the streets to celebrate.

A source at the Nigerian Embassy said that the embassy had warned that celebrations in Abidjan must be low-keyed.

The source said: “It is still a very sensitive environment after the crisis and Ivorians are crazy about football, so we must be careful.” (NAN)

  • How we caged Drogba, others, by Super Eagles

How we caged Drogba, others, by Super Eagles

Super Eagles’ duo of Godfrey Obaobona and Kenneth Omerou have told NationSport how they combined to cage Didier Drogba from causing any damage in the AFCON 2013 quarter-final clash between Ivory Coast and Nigeria.

The Sunshine Stars of Akure skipper in a chat conducted after the victory over the Elephants at the mixed zone of the Royal Bafokeng Stadium, Rustenburg, hinted that: “Like I told you in the one-on-one talk we had in our last Group C game against the Walya Antelopes of Ethiopia, I did categorically state that big names don’t play football.

“With due respect to the former African Player of the Year, he is a fantastic player as he has achieved a lot with Chelsea. I was just composed, didn’t give him space and above all the dedication and team work in the defence against the Ivoirians was the reason for our success. So, I am happy that he didn’t score against us.”

On what went through his mind when Tiote equalised, the Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA) product said that:”I was a bit down as it was a cheap goal we conceded. I didn’t let it demoralise me but went on pushing and at the end, Sunday Nba scored the winner for us.”

For Samsung Fair play winner, Kenneth Omerou: “It was a good that is as good as wining the AFCON trophy.

“We knew they had good players, but we didn’t let that get into our head as we had to stick to the instruction of the coaches, which at the end it proved positive for us.”

Ordega was signed alongside her Nigerian compatriot and team mate, Desire Oparanozie by the Russian club shortly after their impressive showing at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Japan but a niggling ankle injury she aggravated in the Eastern European land cut short her stint.

Having got another club in Sweden an elated Ordega said she was thrilled to have another opportunity to showcase her God-given talent beyond the shores of Nigeria.

“I am happy for another opportunity I just got. I will grab it with both hands when I eventually join my team next week. It is a fresh start for me and I thank all those that contributed to my new lease of life. I’m grateful.

“I know that I won’t be short of companions because we have many Nigerians in the Swedish League and also I have a senior colleague Faith Ikidi in Pitea. I won’t miss home much,” Ordega explained.

The Makurdi-born striker returned to Nigeria and after recovering from the ankle injury teamed up with her previous club, Rivers Angels to gain match fitness.

Meanwhile, Francesca Ordega’s team mate at Pitea, Faith Ikidi has arrived back in Sweden after her delayed trip in Nigeria to sort out her travel documents.

A source close to the Super Falcons’ defender hinted that the player had since started training for Pitea as they intensify preparation for the new league season.
