Eagles demand fair officiating against Ethiopia

SUPER Eagles players have sent a passionate plea to officiating officials at the ongoing AFCON 2013 Nations Cup to be fair to the team in their remaining games, even as they hope to make the quarters when they clash with Ethiopia on Tuesday.

Reacting to Friday’s shock officiating, which culminated in a dubious penalty being awarded to Zambia by the Egyptian referee, team skipper, Joseph Yobo, said while he would not want to question the officials he would want to appeal for fairness, so that the best team will always win.

Yobo’s assistant, Vincent Enyeama, was more direct in his reaction: “It was a bizarre officiating, the worst penalty award I have ever seen in my entire football career, only God knows why they are doing this to us.”

Gangling defender, Azubuike Egwueke, said he was shocked from the bench area when the referee pointed to the spot. “It was like a dream and I was asking whether it was a penalty award or free kick against Zambia, CAF should help us plead with the referees to be fair to the team.” Sunday Mba, who is yet to taste action at the championship, spoke in similar vein, saying that even officials of Nigeria’s opening game against Burkina Faso seem to have a hidden agenda.

On his part, Ogenyi Onazi, who was alleged to have caused the penalty, said he’s still at a loss over the referee’s call. “The opposing Zambian player was the one who was pulling me, shoving and almost pulling down my pants and we were not even in the 18 yard box when the referee called for a penalty. CAF should please tell them to stop killing African football,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Super Eagles will this morning depart for Rustenburg from Nelspruit, where they will play their final game against Ethiopia on Tuesday. The team will leave Nelspruit at 9am for a flight to Pilanesburge Airport and arrive there at about 11:35am from where they will go by road to Rustenburg.

Similarly, Super Eagles Head Coach, Stephen Keshi and Football Association of Zambia (FAZ), President, Kalusha Bwalya showed no animosity towards each other after the controversial 1-1 draw between both countries on Friday. The duo hugged, patted themselves on the back and recalled the heroic days of football when they were the sign-posts of their two nations.

“Present day players need to borrow a leaf from us on how to be true legends of the game”, Kalusha said with journalists snapping away at the duo in firm embrace.

    Odemwingie blasts West Brom fans

PETER Odemwingie has reaffirmed his desire to leave West Brom this month, placing the blame for his wish to exit with the Baggies’ fans.

It was revealed earlier this month that the Nigerian international was looking to force a move to QPR as he had grown unhappy at the Hawthorns.

The Baggies rejected a transfer request from Odemwingie on Thursday, but he remains determined to leave the club before next Thursday’s transfer deadline, taking to Twitter to explain his decision to West Brom fans.

“I can understand the reaction of few Albion fans on my desire to leave the club. Real reason? Cos they once doubted my commitment,” he said on the micro-blogging site.”Want to know why I wanted to quit top flight football last summer earlier than I wished to? They know at the club.”

He added, “Albion fans are not the only reason, but made it easier for me to decide to stay and try my best to forget about the disappointment.

“I succeeded in doing that. But it’s not getting better. Before bigger disappointment comes one day I better leave on a good note.

Amaechi, Dangote rally support for Eagles

RIVER State Governor, Rt Hon Rotimi Amaechi, has said the Super Eagles will still go far at the ongoing Nations Cup championship, despite drawing its first two games.

He made the remarks after donating the sum of $100,000 to the team in Nelspruit on Friday afternoon. Governor Amaechi, who is also the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, further revealed that he has the words of President Goodluck Jonathan that the team will not lack anything to excel at the championship.

“Let me also say that Alhaji Alike Dangote has asked me to tell the team that he will donate huge amount to the team, when it reaches the quarter final and he will be here personally to support the team and cheer you to victory”, he said. Amaechi was in the company of the Nigerian Ambassador to South Africa, Amb S.S Yusuf, Consul General Okey Emuchay (MFR), NFF President Alhaji Aminu Maigari and a chunk size of his executive committee members.

Maigari praised the support the NFF and the Super Eagles have received from Governor Amaechi over the years, while Skipper Joseph Yobo, assured that despite initial hiccups the team will excel at the ongoing championship.

And on Saturday, it was the turn of the Executive Mayor of Mbombela, Hon (Mrs) Catherine Dlamini, to ginger up the Super Eagles, when she paid a courtesy call on the team during lunch time. Accompanied by a Councillor, Moris Mozibane, she was received on behalf of the team by NFF Vice President, Chief Mike Umeh, executive committee members, Barr Chris Green, Chief Emeka Inyama and Chief Felix Anyansi-Agwu.

She said she came to boost the spirit of the team ahead of their last group game against Ethiopia, adding that she expects the team to return to Nelspruit for the quarter finals. She thereafter presented the team with gift bags and she was in turn presented symbolically with a Super Eagles jersey by team skipper, Joseph Yobo.

He assured the Mayor that the team was sure to return to Nelspruit for the quarters and thanked her for her support and the beauty of Nelspruit city.

Chief Umeh spoke in similar vein, assuring that the team will not let Nigerians and the Mayor down in its quest for honours at AFCON 2013.

  • Elephants thrash Carthage Eagles

    Elephants thrash Carthage Eagles

COTE d’Ivoire scored two late goals to wrap up a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Tunisia in their Group D Africa Cup of Nations clash in Rustenburg yesterday.

Gervinho had put the Elephants 1-0 up in the first half and it seemed as if they would have a tense period at the end of the game to see off the North Africans, but Yaya Toure and Didier Ya Konan scored in the dying minutes to ease their nerves.

The Elephants surprisingly left the talismanic Didier Drogba on the bench for the start of the game, but his absence didn’t stop them from looking lively and energetic in attack, particularly in the first half.

The Ivoirians took charge of the game from the early minutes and proceeded to create several half chances. Their first clear opportunities arrived in the 19th and 20th minutes, but Salomon Kalou and Lacina Traore missed out.

However, just a minute later, Gervinho put the team in orange ahead, exchanging passes with Traore before sending a curling shot beyond the reach of goalkeeper Moez Ben Cherifia and into the back of the net.

The West Africans should also have been awarded a penalty toward the end of the first half when Tunisia captain Khalil Chammam handled the ball in the 18-yard area, but referee Rajindraparsad Seechurn of Mauritius waved away their appeals.

Tunisia brought on both Oussama Darragi and Hamdi Harbaoui within 12 minutes of the restart, but it was the Elephants who remained the predominant attacking force in the match.

  • Messi available for Osasuna game

    Messi available for Osasuna game

BARCELONA forward Lionel Messi has returned to full training and is available for today’s La Liga game at home to Osasuna.

The World Player of the Year missed training and needed physiotherapy on Friday after coming off as a precaution late in Thursday’s King’s Cup quarterfinal second leg win at Malaga.

“The Argentine forward will be available for selection for the next league fixture,” Barca said in a statement on their website.

The La Liga leaders are looking to get back to winning ways against Osasuna after their unbeaten start to the campaign was ended last weekend by a 3-2 defeat at Real Sociedad.

They still have an eight-point lead over second-placed Atletico Madrid, who play at Athletic Bilbao today, with champions Real Madrid a further seven points back in third.

  • Igesund expects tight game against Morocco

BAFANA Bafana coach Gordon Igesund is hoping Morocco will come at South Africa when the two sides meet in their pivotal Africa Cup of Nations encounter in Durban today.

The hosts need just a point to ensure their passage into the last eight, but will have to be wary against a team knowing that victory in the Group A tie is their only guarantee of a place in the next round.

“I’m expecting, and actually hoping, that they will come at us tomorrow because if they do that then it is going to be a very open game,” Igesund told a pre-match press conference.

“In that situation I would like to back ourselves.”You know we are obviously going to see what they want to do but we know what they need to do, they need to win the game and that is the bottom line.”

The South Africans can qualify for the quarterfinal with all three results a win, draw and even a loss although they will also need the Angolans to either beat or share the spoils with Cape Verde Islands.

Morocco must win the match to assure qualification, but a draw may be enough if there is a similar score line in the other game.

  • Djokovic, Murray chase Grand Slam records

ANDY Murray and Novak Djokovic will both have Grand Slam records in their sights when they meet in Sunday’s Australian Open final – the latest instalment of their growing rivalry.

Djokovic, the world number one and three-time champion at Melbourne Park, could become the first man to win three successive Australian titles since 1967, when Roy Emerson made it five in a row.

Murray beat Djokovic to win his first major title at last September’s US Open , and is poised to become the first man to follow up his maiden Grand Slam victory with another straight away.

For the Briton, probably more tantalising is the prospect of firmly establishing himself among the current golden generation as a multi-Slam winner.

He faces a daunting task against the best player in the world for the last two years -and a player who defeated him in the 2011 Australian Open final.

“I think so much of it comes down to how you play on the day, to be honest,” said 25-year-old Murray.

  • Azarenka weeps after retaining crown

VICTORIA Azarenka spoke of her relief as she overcame a hostile crowd to beat Li Na and retain her Australian Open crown on Saturday.

The world No 1 was forced to defend herself against suspicions that she deliberately called for physio treatment to stall opponent Sloane Stephens in her semi-final victory over the American – something that did not go unnoticed by an unforgiving Melbourne crowd.

The Belarusian called for medical assistance after blowing five match points at 6-1, 5-3 up against Stephens, and took a 10-minute break to leave the American sitting there as she prepared to serve for survival.

“I think there was … everything. Emotion, relief, joy. You never know how you’re going to react,” she told the host broadcaster Channel Seven. “It comes from the bottom of the heart.

“It has been a really tough couple of weeks. It has been emotional,” she added of the criticism she has faced. “Unfortunately you have to go through rough patches to achieve a great thing that is why this makes it so special for me to go through that.

  • Iroha slams ‘passion-less’ Eagles

FORMER Super Eagles defender, Benedict Iroha has said that the present team lacks the passion and drive that will take them to winning ways.

In a chat with The Nation Sport, at the Stay Easy Hotel, Nelspruit the member of the ’94 Nations Cup winning Eagles said the lacklustre attitude of the players is not encouraging, but was full of praises for defender Kenneth Omeruo and Spartak Moscow forward Emmanuel Emenike, who scored Nigeria’s only goal of the match.

“Passion and positive attitude towards national assignments is missing in this team. But I think Kenneth Omeruo was outstanding in the defence while Emmanuel Emenike was a handful for the Zambians,” he said.

He, however, expressed optimism that the Eagles will qualify from the group stage, but hope they can hold their own against stiffer opposition as the competition progresses.

“The Eagles will qualify for the next round I am very sure of that but how they now manage their matches in the next stages will be left for the team to determine,” he said.
