“It was one of the worst have seen in the history of football. It doesn’t belong to football if we want to develop a football in Africa. You don’t give that kind of penalty in a great match like that in a game between Nigeria and Zambia. You don’t give that a call that was how we missed a good three points in our first match againt Burkina Faso when the referee officiated against us. I am really mad about the officiating. We got a red card. It was one of the worst I have seen in live,” Enyeama said.

CONTROVERSIAL PENALTY: Enyeama, Mikel rage at Egyptian ref

The Eagles duo while exchanging pleasantries with the Copper Bullets players to show spirit of sportsmanship confronted the Egyptian ref to voice their displeasure over his call to award a penalty to the AFCON 2012 defending champions.

Enyeama stressed to the ref that it was a fifty-fifty ball challenge more so Zambia’s Mayuku did more of the shirt pulling and not Onazi.

The ref rebuffed Enyeama and Mikel claim by walking away to the dressing room with his assistants.

  • PENALTY LOSS: Don’t blame Mikel, says Oliseh

PENALTY LOSS: Don’t blame Mikel, says Oliseh

Ex- Super Eagles Captain, Sunday Oliseh has faulted fans all over the world castigating Chelsea FC of London midfielder for missing a penalty against Zambia in yesterday’s second group C match at the on-going Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

Nigeria drew 1-1 with Zambia at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit with both teams having two points and still not sure of qualification chances to the quarter-final. The final group matches would determine.

Egyptian referee, Grisha Ghead gave Nigeria a penalty in the first half after attacker Ahmed Musa was fouled in the 18-yard box by a Zambia defender.

Mikel’s antecedents as a good penalty taker for Nigeria made him step out.

Surprisingly he failed to convert his kick. “Those criticizing Mikel on Twitter are not fair because anybody can miss a penalty. Instead what people should be taking about is what did the players do after missing the penalty? He said.

Oliseh who is a guest analyst on cable sports station Supersport also criticized the referee for the penalty awarded to Zambia. “That was not a penalty because both players were going for the ball and the Zambia player was not inside the 18-yard box.

“We can see that officiating in this tournament has not been good,” he said.

On his thoughts about Keshi not leading a team beyond the first round in a Cup of Nations tournament, Oliseh said the situation now is different.

“I’m looking beyond Keshi because Nigeria as a country is bigger than Keshi. We are talking of our national identity which is at stake. I know questions would be asked as to why we cannot win our matches. Why we are making the same error, but that we have to put aside and think ahead” he said.

However, Oliseh still has firm confidence in Nigeria of winning its next and final group match against Ethiopia on Tuesday.

  • Eagles’ll overcome Zambia, says Maigari

    Eagles’ll overcome Zambia, says Maigari

President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Aminu Maigari said on Thursday that he has no doubt the Super Eagles will overpower their Zambian counterparts when both teams clash at the Mbombela Stadium on Friday in the on-going 29th African Cup of Nations finals.

Speaking at his Emnotweni Hotel in Nelspruit as Nigeria football’s top hierarchy countenances today’s clash of titans, Maigari insisted that nothing had been lost and won by any of the teams in the group and that it would be like a fresh start on Friday evening.

“We have one goal for, one against and a point, just as each of the other three teams in the group. Yes, we would have loved to have the three points against Burkina Faso, moreso when we came so close to doing so, but football sometimes presents unexpected and dazzling conclusions.

“Nigerians don’t cry over spilt milk; it is not our attitude. So we take it that everyone is equal and nothing definite has happened in the group. Everyone is starting on a fresh note and the Super Eagles are ready to make hay.”

Nigeria confront the Africa champions today after a final-second blunder enabled the Etalons of Burkina Faso to earn a point in the two teams’ opening match of Group C.

The Chipolopolo were also a goal up and with one man advantage against the Walya Antelopes of Ethiopia before conceeding a second half equalizer at the same venue on Monday.

Nigeria football top officials are refusing to be bothered by a statement credited to Zambia Coach Herve Renard on the margin of the tournament, to the effect that the Eagles are ordinary.

“That statement has no weight; the young man was only playing mind games but our own Coach’s refusal to even dignify him with a reply shows uncommon maturity. I think such maturity by our players on the field on Friday will determine the match in our favour,” stated Emeka Inyama, chairman of the NFF Media and Publicity Committee.

Inyama went down memory lane to say that Zambia have not beaten the Eagles at the African Cup of Nations in the past 30 years.

“They defeated us at the 1982 Africa Cup of Nations but we booted the Zambians out of the 1990 finals in Algeria and then edged them to win the trophy in 1994. In 2010 in Angola, the Eagles won their quarter final duel on penalty shoot-out.”

Also speaking in Nelspruit, on arrival on Thursday, chairman of the NFF Technical Committee, Barrister Chris Green said: “Please tell Nigerians that there is nothing to worry about. The Super Eagles will be in business against the Zambians on Friday. I have spoken to Coach Keshi and he says there is no shaking. The Zambians will be out to prove that they are truly the champions of Africa, so the pressure will be on them.

“Our game plan and team selection will be key. But we will get both right,” pledged Green.
