  • Nigeria, Zambia in grudge duel

    Nigeria, Zambia in grudge duel

A Quarterfinal spot, revenge and bragging rights are riding on today’s AFCON Group C showdown between Nigeria and Zambia in Nelspruit.

Both teams were pegged back by less fancied teams in their opening AFCON group openers – defending champions Zambia were stunned by an exciting Ethiopia side, while the Super Eagles were also cancelled out at the death by Burkina Faso.

The result is that Group C is very wide open as all four teams are on equal footing, but today’s results would give a clearer picture in the race for places to the knockout stage of this tournament that has already produced a number of surprises.

Even before the first ball was kicked at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, Zambia coach Herve Renard fueled the growing rivalry between the two teams when he said he was not impressed with the Eagles against debutants Cape Verde in a warm-up game in Portugal.

Was Renard playing mind games? Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi, who celebrated his 51st birthday on Wednesday, said he is not interested and that scores will have to be settled on the pitch from 4pm Nigerian time.

Incidentally, Keshi recorded his first win as Eagles coach against the Chipolopolo in November 2011 in a friendly played in the northern Nigeria city of Kaduna. Goals by the Uche brothers, Kalu and Ikechukwu, lifted the Eagles above a team that will go on to surprise everyone to win the Nations Cup in Gabon three months later.

But even in defeat, Zambia were the more cohesive team and outplayed their hosts for most periods with playmaker Rainford Kalaba running the show.

Zambia also enjoyed more possession when they were eliminated by Nigeria at the quarterfinals of the 2010 Nations Cup in Angola after a penalty shootout.

Other notable clashes between these teams were the 1994 final in Tunisia, which Nigeria won 2-1 to claim their second Nations Cup trophy, as well as a 2-0 win over the Zambians in the 1990 tournament in Algeria.

Zambia stopped Nigeria from featuring at the 1986 Nations Cup in Egypt and also trounced the Super Eagles 3-0 at the 1982 AFCON in Libya.

Overall, the teams have met 16 times at full international level with both claiming victory in five games, while six matches ended in a draw. While Zambia have kept a low profile in the run-in to this clash, Nigeria have had a few things to say about this match-up.

Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi was the man of the match against Burkina Faso and he said he’s already looking beyond this game as he believes Nigeria could go all the way to claim their third trophy in South Africa.

“We may have drawn our first game, but we need to settle down and forget it and concentrate, and I can see us smiling home with the trophy at the end of the day,” Mikel predicted.

Goalkeeper Austin Ejide said they expects a tough game from the champions.

“It’s not going to be an easy game for us, but we are preparing very hard for it. The team spirit is very high and we know the demands ahead because a win would do us a lot of good,” he told MTNFootball.com.

Eneramo scores in Sivasspor’s Cup win

Nigeria striker, Michael Eneramo was in fine fettle on Wednesday as his goal helped Sivasspor beat 1490 Trabzon Karadenizspor 2-1 in a group stage game in the Turkish Cup. Eneramo opened score in the 40th minute in very chilly conditions.

The big striker’s effort just before the break was a finish of pure quality. He received a cross from Polish striker, Kamil Grosicki from the right and with his back to goal, he swiveled before lashing an unstoppable effort.

The visitors however responded on the stroke of half time when Sercan Kaya fired home their equaliser. Hakan Karslan then struck Sivasspor’s winner with 23 minutes remaining. Sivasspor now progress to the next round of the competition as they drew the first leg 1-1 on January 16. Eneramo has been in good form this season for Sivasspor with five goals to his name for the Yigidolar in the 2012/13 Turkey Premier League.

    Ghana pip Mali 1-0

Ghana took a big stride towards the quarterfinals of the African Nations Cup when they beat Mali 1-0 on Thursday to go top of Group B with four points from their two matches.

The decisive goal at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium came when Mali defender Adama Tamboura needlessly bundled over Emmanuel Agyemang Badu in the area to concede a penalty which Mubarak Wakaso swept home in the 38th minute with an emphatic spotkick.

The youngster was then immediately booked, however, for displaying a religious slogan when he lifted up his jersey to reveal “Allah is Great” emblazoned on his t-shirt.

It was his second yellow of the tournament and he will now miss Ghana’s third group match against Niger on Monday.

Ghana, who also hit the woodwork in the first half with a header from Agyemang Badu, are top, a point clear of Mali.

It does not mean we don’t kick ourselves on the pitch, so on Friday our players will kick themselves and we will do the handshakes”.

Skipper Joseph Yobo, said he would not talk much about the boast by the Zambian side that they will take Nigeria to the cleaners. “We shall see when we get to the pitch tomorrow”, he declared.

  • Zenke missing in Nancy’s victory

    Zenke missing in Nancy’s victory

Nancy moved into the last 16 of the Coupe de France as they overcame fancied Nice on penalties but Nigerian striker Simon Zenke was not in action.

Zenke with just a goal to his name since making a switch from Turkey is believed to be plotting his exit from the relegation-threatened side having failed to settle fast into the team at Nancy

Nice is fourth in Ligue 1 and it took the lead against bottom side Nancy through Alexy Bosetti after seven minutes.

However, the visitor went ahead through Paul Alo’o Efoulou’s doufble (23, 57) only for Dario Cvitanich to equalise in the last minute and make it 2-2.

The teams could not be separated in extra-time and Nancy showed character, despite having been denied victory over 90 minutes, to win 4-2 on penalties.

Nancy has won just once in the league this season but the cup seems to be offering light relief.

Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo has shaken off the errors which led to the stalemate recorded by his side in the first game against Burkina Faso on Monday, saying he is ready to stop the Zambians.

Adding his voice to that of his coach, Stephen Keshi, the Fenerbache of Turkey defender said the team has resolved to build on its weakness to scoop the three points at stake against a dreaded Zambian team to make the last match against Ethiopia much more earsier.

“There are reports that I am injured. I have since overcome the ankle injury and I am fully fit for the encounter,” he said.

“Zambia is a very strong side and we have great respect for them, but we also know the expectations back home and hope not to disappoint,” he said.

Yobo said the Eagles have trained hard enough to go past the first round of the competition and go all the way to the finals. He added that that is what the team has resolved to do in the field of play today.

West Brom director insists: No Baggies exit for Osaze

West Brom striker Peter Osaze Odemwingie will not be allowed to leave in January, according to the club’s sporting and technical director.

The Baggies are believed to have rejected a two million pound offer from QPR for the Nigerian, but West Brom sporting and technical director Richard Garlick has hinted that bids would have to be substantial in order to be considered.

“Last summer there were supposedly players leaving but we kept hold of most of them,” Garlick told Sky Sports News.

“We don’t have to sell any of our players. It’s only on our terms. It’s well documented about Peter. We had an offer and we don’t intend to sell any of our players.

“When an offer comes in, we speak to the player out of courtesy. We’ve had that chat with Peter and he knows the situation.”

Garlick also revealed that the Baggies are unlikely to add to the squad before the end of the transfer window.

“We’re happy with the squad we’ve got and there are no immediate plans to bring anyone in,” he continued.

“If an opportunity presents itself, then we will look at that, but we’re looking more towards the summer.”

KESHI ROARS: Avoid mistakes against Zambia

Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi has said that despite the not-too-impressive outcome of the first match against Burkina Faso on Monday, his wards are set to clinch the three points at stake today against defending champions Chipolopolo of Zambia in the ongoing African Cup of Nations in South Africa.

Speaking in the pre-match press briefing yesterday at the Ingwenyama Conference and Sport Resort in Nelspruit, the Big Boss as he is fondly called said his players have learnt from their mistakes and that the match against Zambia is an opportunity to make amends.

“We have had some training sessions after our disappointing first outing against Burkina Faso and I think the mistakes made should not occur again.

“The defenders especially have been worked on and we expect that we can secure our place in the quater finals with this win,” he said.

He however admitted that another draw will be detrimental to the set goals of the team, adding that winning the encounter is not negotiable.

The Super Eagles today in the second match of their AFCON campaign square-up against Zambia needing a win to be in a vintage position for a place in the quater finals.

    Renard: Zambia not under pressure

The head coach of Zambia, Herve Renard has said that contrary to the reports that his player are under pressure, the team exudes greater confidence now than ever in the defence of the AFCON trophy they won last year.

The Frenchman though expressing high regard for the Super Eagles, however, said nothing scares him especially in football, as he expects that his team carries the day.

“The match against Nigeria is not the final, the final is still way up though, but it will no doubt be a very tough encounter. The atmosphere in camp is perfect and we hope to win against Nigeria and qualify for the quarter finals,” he said.

The former assistant coach to the Ghana national team said he is not intimidated by Nigeria’s record especially against Zambia in the past, but added that his team remains the team to beat.

“We are not under any form of pressure. I am not scared of any team in the competition. We have not lost the desire to fight which we displayed in the last edition. I take responsibility for the outcome of the last match against Ethiopia. I took a risk by bringing in a striker for a defender because I wanted more goals, but against Nigeria tomorrow (Today), it will be a different ball game.”

The match has been scheduled for the Mbombela Stadium, Nelspruit, 5pm South African time and 4pm Nigerian time.

Tunisia’s striker Jemaa out of Afcon

Tunisia striker Issam Jemaa will play no further part in the African Nations Cup after spraining his knee in his country’s opening match this week, the Tunisian Football Federation said on Thursday.

The former French-based striker had to come off after 16 minutes of Tunisia’s 1-0 win over neighbours Algeria in Rustenburg on Tuesday.

“He has to rest for the next six weeks,” said a federation statement.

Jemaa, 28, was competing at his fifth successive Nations Cup tournament.

Tunisia will not be able to replace him as they did injured defender Fateh Gharbi on Monday, before their opening game, when they flew in Houcem Haj Mabrouk from CA Bizertin as a replacement.

Tunisia next face Ivory Coast in Group D on Saturday.
