Ladipo urges Nigeria to ensure regular participation

Dr Rafiu Ladipo, the President-General, Nigeria Football Supporters’ Club (NFSC), on Thursday urged Nigeria to ensure that it participated in every Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

Oladipo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that it was befitting for Nigeria to have qualified for the 2013 AFCON in South Africa.

“It is a long time we last won the AFCON, precisely in 1994 in Tunisia. Since then, it has been from one calamity to the other and winning either silver or bronze and later we even stopped winning. It was so bad that we failed to appear at the last edition of the competition jointly hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. That was the height of the disappointment. A nation like Nigeria should make it its birth right to feature in every Nations Cup,” he said.

Ladipo said that he thanked God that Nigeria had qualified to be part of the continental competition in South Africa from Jan. 19 to Feb. 10. He advised the team’s technical crew not to allow sentiments in the selection of players for the competition.

“The Stephen Keshi-led technical crew of the Super Eagles should not allow sentiments to becloud their judgment in the selection of players. The only qualification for any player to get selected should be readiness to put up 100 per cent of his very best, meaning absolute merit. They should be players who are ready to make good and big names for themselves and their country. The players themselves should seize the opportunity of being selected to write their names in the good books of our nation. So, they have to be committed, determined and patriotic enough to give their best. The players at the competition should see their call up as an opportunity to further project themselves to the outside world,” he said.

Ladipo warned Nigeria not to be deceived because every country in Africa was a potential winner of AFCON because there were no minnows in football any longer. “Every country in Africa wants to qualify for the Nations Cup, do well and win,” he noted.

The president-general then called on the Nigeria Football Federation to encourage the team with generous allowances and bonuses which should be paid as and when due.

    ‘Sunshine to rule Africa’

Akin Akinbobola, the Special Adviser on Sports to the Ondo State Governor, has said that the Ondo Football Agency is bent on making Sunshine Stars FC of Akure a dominant continental side.

Akinbobola told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Thursday on telephone that all hands are on deck to achieve the task. He added that the Olusegun Mimiko-led administration would ensure that the dominance stemmed from the Nigeria Premier League (NPL).

“We were nowhere in the NPL before now, as a matter of fact we were almost going on relegation at one stage; but our sports-loving governor has been our bedrock. Sunshine Stars will rule the continent through our carefully laid out plans this coming season. Everyone will have to agree with me that the onerous task can only be achieved through hard work, which we are ready to do,’’ he said.

Akinbobola told NAN that the club’s fans should be ready for a new-look team by the time the league season eventually kicks-off.

“Sunshine Stars are rebranding for good and any club that underrates us will do so at their own peril.’’

NAN reports that Sunshine Stars finished the 2011/2012 season in the fifth position, with 52 points from the 30 matches it played.

    Dike dedicates goal to God

Goal scorer Bright Dike has dedicated his first goal for Nigeria against the Catalonians on Wednesday night in Barcelona, Spain to the Almighty God.

“I dedicate the goal to God who made it possible for me to score after I got a great pass from Onazi. The goal gave me an amazing feeling,” said the forward, who made his Eagles debut in November against Venezuela.

“I feel great to score the all-important goal but it is not only me that scored the goal, it was a collective effort and I thank my teammates.”

The MLS star continued: “Onazi was running so fast with the ball and I was within reach, he decided to give me a good pass and I was too happy to finish it up, that is what we call team work and the coach has been telling us to always play with ourselves and it showed in this game”, the bulky striker declared. He further said he would be too delighted to be part of the final 23 players that will be selected for the Nations Cup in South Africa and promised to do his best at the championship for the Eagles.

He also declared that the 1-1 draw with the star-studded Catalonia on Wednesday will lift the Super Eagles leading to the AFCON.

Portland Timbers of USA star Dike scored the equaliser for Nigeria in the 55th minute to ensure Nigeria took something out of this friendly after they slumped 5-0 to the same team five years ago.

“This game should build confidence and belief in the team. It was a tough match, they possess the ball very well. We made some mistakes but that is what all of these game are for to correct those mistakes,” a thrilled Dike told MTNFootball.com.

    Fenerbahce deny wooing Emenike

Emmanuel Emenike’s agent, Erdem Konyar, has denied reports at home and abroad that his client is on the brink of a transfer to Fenerbahce in the January window.

It had earlier been reported that Spartak Moscow were willing to do business with the Turkish club if they could meet the 15 million euros valuation of the Nigeria internationalist.

”We do not know of such a desire on the part of the Turkish club. I have a good relationship with the leadership of Fenerbahce. I was told by the club that they did not approach Spartak Moscow.

”Emenike have had some problems with the former head coach of Spartak Moscow Unai Emery. But now the coach is Karpin, and all the problems disappeared. I doubt that the transfer is possible in the current situation,” Konyar was quoted as saying by the online edition of Soviet Sport.

Emmanuel Emenike signed a four – year contract with Fenerbahce in the summer of 2011 for a fee of around 9 million euros. Without playing an official game for the club, he was sold to Spartak Moscow.

Ike Uche blows hot for Barca

Villarreal striker, Ikechukwu Uche stressed that his side cannot afford to drop any more points and this weekend’s match against Barcelona B is now a must win.

Speaking to reporters following the first practice back from Christmas break, Uche insisted that it was necessary to put together a string of good results and keep fighting for promotion.

“Now I’m only thinking of Saturday’s game and helping the team so we can get off to a strong start. We need to start strong and get the good results early. We need to improve, we need better results and the work we are doing is reflected in the team’s results. We hope that in the new year, things change for the better. We know we cannot fail, we know that time is crucial and we must fight for every game.”

The Nigerian international then admitted that the team’s lack of scoring is one of the team’s biggest problems.

“It’s true that we are missing out on goals, but that’s not the only problem. We must improve and we must do it as a team, it’s something of which the team is very conscious.”

    Newcastle insist on embattled Osaze

It is new year of missed fortunes for embattled Super Eagles and West Brom forward Peter Osaze Odemwingie. The 31 year old who recently arrested the headlines following his no twitter rant over decision of Coach Stephen Keshi to drop him from Eagles list to the nations Cup which gets underway in South Africa january 19, has become a must have for English premiership side Newcastle.

The Toons are on the verge of losing impressive goal machine and Senegalese international Demba Ba and coach Alan Pardew believes Osaze is the best replacement for the Ba as the sides aims to improve its standings in the premiership this season.

Talks were being intensified Tuesday with the coach ready to part with £3million (about N774million ) for Osaze who joined West Brom in August 2010 after three fruitful years romance with Russian side Locomotive Moscow.

Speed of the 31 year old husband of Sarah Fallon is said to be the main attraction for Pardew who is still struggling Nigeria football Federation over the release or otherwise for Shola Ameobi for the Nations Cup.

Pardew is equally said to be looking ahead to post AFCON Osaze/ Ameobi partnership. Osaze has 18 months left of the Abion contract and has signified interest in leaving the side.

The former Bendel Insurance ace almost moved to the cash-rich Qatari League last summer but the Baggies were unable to strike a deal.

Albion chiefs are keen to do business now rather than see his value plummet as he nears the end of his contract.

  • AFN assures fairness in selection of athletes

AFN assures fairness in selection of athletes

The Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN) on Wednesday said it has put in place measures to guard against age-cheats at the forthcoming Africa Athletics Youth Championships in Warri in March. Commodore Omatseye Nesiama (NN), Technical Director of the federation, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the championships, which is for ages 16 and 17, would hold between March 28 and March 31.

“I can assure that participating athletes at the championships will win through fair means because we are not hosting purposely to win, but to show example. We will ensure that winning is not a do-or-die affair. There are talks already that we must win at all costs, but I am saying it is not compulsory to win. We are not hosting to win,’’ he said.

According to him, athletes’ real age at the competition will be ascertained through their birth certificates and school records. He added that screening of athletes to ascertain their actual ages would also be conducted through documentation from their parents or guardians.

“We must be able to host well without cheating. We are not going to take any athlete that has been in any athletic club for more than a year. We are going to be serious with our screening because we need to nurture young athletes,” Nesiama said.

The AFN Technical Director said that the federation does not need over-aged athletes who would not be able to cope with youth programmes, as they progressed.

“In fact, we are not going to allow athletes who are already running for clubs to feature because the competition is mainly to discover new and young talents. We have different programmes for different categories and if we get it wrong now, we will continue to miss our set objectives and we will be deceiving ourselves.

“If we present a team that is truly the reflection of the ages required and we do not win, I have no problem about that. “I will be happy because we would have assembled the right age of athletes that will be groomed properly for future competitions,” he added.

  • 2013 Africa Cup of Nations Cup: The best strikers for Keshi’s formation

2013 Africa Cup of Nations Cup: The best strikers for Keshi’s formation

With a glut of strikers at his disposal, Nigeria’s coach, Stephen Keshi must decide who will best suit his plans for a successful outing at the 2013 Afcon

The names of the strikers that Nigeria’s Super Eagles could use at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations Cup easily roll off the tongue. From Emmanuel Emenike, Brown Ideye, Shola Ameobi (?), to Ikechukwu Uche; and not forgetting Bright Dike and Kalu Uche – the team is awash with some quality strikers. We also have Ahmed Musa, who has been playing as a top striker for CSKA Moscow this season.

But unfortunately, not all these names will be in South Africa in January so Coach Stephen Keshi has to decide who amongst the lot best suits his style and formation and not forgetting who will deliver the goals. The ideal situation will be that the chosen one goes on to score in every game that the Super Eagles will play in South Africa – from the three group stage matches till the final. That means he must score at least six (6) goals in South Africa.

    So, who is this person?

First we have to take a look at the qualities that each striker will bring to the team.

Every coach in the world has looked at the template of the best national side in the last six years and want their team to play almost like that – it is like a fashion fad, it will be the norm until Spain loses its mojo – in football I mean!.

So agreed that Keshi will stick to the 4-3-3 that he favoured during qualification, it would mean that the Super Eagles do not need a stagnant centre forward but a very nimble and mobile player that will always play on the shoulder of the opponent’s last defender-then the task of choosing the lead striker will have been made easier.

THE STRENGTHS OF THE PROBABLE STRIKERS

Ikechukwu Uche: The most nimble and technically gifted of all the strikers in the team and the most experienced amongst the lot. He has all the qualities to play the false number nine role. He can dribble, shoot with both feet and if he is starved of the ball in the last third can join the fray in midfield. He has been very potent for the Super Eagles-whether he starts or comes off the bench.

Emmanuel Emenike: Emenike possesses the strength to hold on to ball with his weighty frame and he is quite nimble though he does not like moving out of the box too much as most of his goals come at the end of moves by his team mates using the matches in the Champions League and Super Eagles matches as a guide.

Brown Ideye: Ideye has been in good goal scoring form this season because of his movement from outside the box and good combination play with his team’s play maker. He is good with his head and can shoot really well with both feet. Though he sometimes tries to do too much when playing for Nigeria, he is young and still improving his all round game.

Bright Dike: An upstart that can only be assessed with the minutes he played against Venezuela last month. He is a powerfully built player with speed and aggression who reminds one of Daniel Amokachi, which means he will not score a lot of goals.

Shola Ameobi: We are still not sure if he will be available for the Nations Cup but he is strong and big and has nimble foot work for such a big man. He has a lot of experience playing in the English Premier League though he is a neophyte with the national team as he played for the first time last month against Venezuela. He is a good one to have on the bench and can join the fray when things are not going to plan to disrupt the balance of the central defenders of the opponents.

Kalu Uche: Just left for Turkey from Enyimba but technically a good striker, who can hold up the ball and loves to run the channels behind the defensive formation of the opponents. He has been scoring regularly in the second division in Turkey but if chosen could play a big part in the Super Eagles.

Ahmed Musa: The CSKA Moscow player is included in this list because he has been playing as a striker for his team in the Russia Premier League and has scored a lot of goals in the process. He is fast and can cause a lot of havoc running off the ball but still lacks the instincts of a world class striker.

So after listing all the strengths of these strikers, I would say that Emenike leads the queue with his poacher’s instincts as he showed so brilliantly against Liberia, though the team from Liberia cannot be classified as world class opponents.

Also, Ideye and Ik Uche present ideal foils for the rampaging two that will be behind the main striker but I would also love to see Musa play the role because almost all the teams in the Nations Cup will be prepared for Emenike, Ideye and Ikechukwu Uche and Ahmed’s presence in the central striking will definitely put the cat amongst the pigeons.

We will be thrilled to get your responses on whom the Super Eagles ideal striker should be.
