STRIKER’S ROLE: Musa gets ‘green light’ at CSKA

CSKA Moscow head coach, Leonid Slutsky has backed Musa to continue in the main striker’s role in the absence of injured front men, Tomas Necid and Seydou Doumbia.

The CSKA Moscow manager wants the 20-year-old attacking winger to keep the goals coming in order to help the Armeytsy win their 11th Russian league title. But Slutsky made it clear that the former Kano Pillars’ man is not a finished product yet.

“I want to give credit to all players and Musa in particular. The player justified when used as a striker. We gave him a tough role and he proved that he can fit in any role. It is no science why he is the second best player in the (Russian) championship with respect to (his) goals and assists, if we look at the stats.

“Though he has a lot of shortcomings, he can improve for sure as he is young and energetic. I think Musa can continue to play in that role even if we buy a striker this January,” Slutsky was quoted as saying in the Russian media.

Musa has scored eight goals in 18 Russian Premier League matches and is currently in Nigeria’s camp for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

Ameobi should be scapegoat, urges Akpoborie

Ex-Nigeria star Jonathan Akpoborie has urged Nigeria to stop Shola Ameobi from playing for Newcastle if he does not feature at the AFCON.

The ex-Wolfsburg striker told MTNFootball.com that foreign clubs are fond of taking Nigeria for granted over players release and that Nigeria should fight the Ameobi’s case to the end.

“Well we need Ameobi at the Nations Cup for his ball-keeping abilities up front to keep pressure away from our defence, I believe at this time, Ameobi is crucial to Keshi’s plans, so FIFA’s rule is key. We should do all to block him from playing for Newcastle United,” demanded Akpoborie.

“He (Ameobi) should have known all this before he made himself available for Nigeria. We should go the whole way to block him from playing for them so as to send a message to other team who may want to do same next time.”

Keshi has not heard from Ameobi as the player promised and Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has maintained the experienced striker will not be at the AFCON after the club invoked a clause in his contract.

Ameobi posted an encouraging Eagles debut in November against Venezuela to complete his nationality switch from England to Nigeria.

  • Bright Dike saves Eagles

    Bright Dike saves Eagles

U.S BASED Bright Dike scored a 55th minute cracker to grant Nigeria’s Super Eagles a hard fough victory over Catalonian counterparts, thanks to away goals rule after Wednesday’s friendly ended in a 1-1 score line.

The Portland Timbers striker who was enjoying his second spell for the Stephen Keshi tutored-side after his debut in last year’s friendly against Venezuela, joined force in a two-man striking force with Dynamo Kiev’s Brown Ideye.

Interestingly, as early as the second minute, AC Milan striker, Bojan Krkic missed putting the Catalan XI in front from close range via a Joan Verdu cross.

However, a minute later, Sergio Gonzalez converted from the spot to put Catalonia 1-0 up after the centre referee, Xavier Estrada Fernandez, adjudged Fengor Ogude to have handled the ball in the box.

Bojan was put through on goal and skipped past Nigeria captain and goalkeeper, Chigozie Agbim before Azubuike Egwuekwe hooked the ball clear.

Three minutes past the half hour mark, Bojan nearly got on the end of Xavi’s chip leaving an onrushing Agbim missing the ball all together.

In spite of Nigeria’s Super Eagles stemming the wave of Catalonia attack, Barcelona right-back, Martin Montoya still had the time to ghost past Benjamin Francis before his square pass into the box is missed by everyone with ten minutes to the break.

Catalonia centre-back, Gerard Pique came close with six minutes to half time after getting on to the end of Xavi’s free kick but Agbim narrowed him down.

Nigeria carved out the last chance of the first half when SS Lazio youngster, Ogenyi Onazi attempted an audacious strike from all of 40 yards but it inched just wide over Francisco Casilla’s cross bar.

Catalonia started the business end as the first with lots of ball possession.

On 53 minutes, Martin Montoya was through on goal but Nigeria’s skipper on the night, Agbim bravely foiled his attempt on goal inside the box.

Two minutes later, out of the blues, Dike latched on to Onazi’s through pass before cutting inside of his marker to blasting past Casilla to put score at 1-1 inside the Estadi Cornella-El Prat in Espanyol.

Catalonia came close to taking the lead with 18 minutes left, as Cristian Tello’s wonderful cut back to Jonathan Soriano into the box was blasted over the post.

With nine minutes to play, the Eagles ventured forward with Emmanuel Emenike played through on goal from Kenneth Omeruo’s long ball but his shot is blocked by Getafe keeper, Jordi Codina.

In the last five minutes, Nigeria kept the shape of their defence against the tiki-taka playing Seleccio Catalana.

But with a minute to regulation time, Tello failed to score on his debut for Catalonia when he blazed over the post after he was played on face-to-face with Agbim.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles used the game against the Catalan XI as a pre-African Cup of Nations game.

GRANADAD VS VALENCIA: Ighalo to play as lone striker

Granada will play their next league games starting from this weekend’s clash against Valencia with Odion Ighalo as the only striker available for selection, says as.com.

After a disappointing half season, Italian forward Antonio Floro Flores has left the Andalusian club to sign for Genoa. Youssef El Arabi (Morocco) and Darwin Machis (Venezuela) have both been called up by their respective countries for the African Cup of Nations and the South American Under 20 qualifying tournament.

Granada are unlikely to buy new players to act as cover in the winter transfer market. Thus, former Flying Eagles skipper Odion Ighalo is the only front-man available to coach Juan Antonio Anquela.

Ighalo, who was Granada’s top scorer last season, is still searching for his first goal this campaign after 8 matches.

  • Reviving school sports will re-create athletics, says Obajimi

Reviving school sports will re-create athletics, says Obajimi

Gloria Obajimi, a board member of the Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN) on Wednesday called for the revival of school sports as a way of stimulating interest in athletics in the country.

Obajimi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on telephone that the base on which to breed those to replace the elite athletes had weakened over time.

“We do not have a foundation or programmes where younger athletes can be groomed to replace the ageing elite athletes which have led to some overbearing pressure on the elite athletes. We cannot forget the schools in the development of sports in the country, especially athletics, because many of us were discovered from the schools. This was made possible because there were many competitions available for us to participate in as students, such as inter-school competitions and inter-house sports,” she said. Obajimi added that the focus on school sports would not only assist in identifying talents at a younger age but create avenues for coaches remain abreast with new developments in the sport.

“If sports are revived in schools, it will provide opportunities for qualified coaches to be assigned or employed by such schools and in the process, facilitate the education of coaches. Another deficiency of athletics in the country is that our coaches are not adequately educated. Many of them are not up to date,” she said.

The AFN board member told NAN that because of the dearth of sports in schools, the training of athletes had been difficult at older ages at which they were being discovered.

“What some athletes could have learnt in schools if they started at the schools, are now being taught to them at late ages, thereby making training and re-training difficult,” she added.

  • Club owners blast Baribote over comment on minister

Club owners blast Baribote over comment on minister

Sequel to the comment credited to the sacked chairman of the Nigeria Premier League (NPL) board, Chief Rumson Victor Baribote, that the Sports Minister, Honourable Bolaji Abdullahi influenced his removal from the league board, the Club Owners have asked him to prove his allegation.

Spokesperson of the Club Owners, Mike Idoko, in a statement, said allegation that the minister masterminded his removal smacks of ignorance, stressing that Baribote was only looking for who to blame for his inability to perpetuate himself in office.

According to Idoko, the NPL under the leadership of Baribote eroded all gains made over the years by his predecessors.

“Baribote missed the point by saying the minister masterminded his removal. As managers of clubs we know what is good and best for us and we realised late that with the Baribote-led board, the Nigerian league is heading to the rocks. And for him to allege that the minister masterminded his removal is to say the least insulting to the honourable minister.

“The NPL under Baribote was never elected in the first place as no election took place when the court sacked Owumi. The Club Owners gave him the mandate believing he will bring relief to the comatose league. Title sponsorship became a problem and the clubs were made to bear the brunt of the lack of sponsorship,” Idoko said.

The Club Owners, according to Idoko, would never be stooge to anybody, stating that they would not hesitate to withdraw from the present Interim Management Committee when they start showing trait of underdevelopment.

“The Club Owners has never done the bidding of anybody and will never do. We were fed up with the management style of the last board. We did what was right in line with the statutes of the NPL and the power given to clubs by FIFA. If the present board starts following in the footsteps of Baribote, we will have no choice than to pull out,” Idoko, who is a member of the Interim Committee, said.

He declined comment on the purported court case instituted against him and others by Baribote, saying he would talk after the case had been settled in court.

  • Ameobi snubs Keshi’s telephone calls

    Ameobi snubs Keshi’s telephone calls

Nigeria have overlooked Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi for their 2013 Africa Cup of Nations squad after he failed to answer their telephone calls.

Ameobi was named in the preliminary squad by coach Stephen Keshi.

But it was later announced by Newcastle boss Alan Pardew that the 31-year-old would not travel to South Africa.

Nigeria’s media officer Ben Alaiya said: “Shola’s refusal to answer calls gave Keshi no other option than to allow him to concentrate on his club,.

“The coach and team secretary made several attempts to reach Shola but there was no answer. The coach waited to hear back from him but a call never came.

“A decision on the next move will be made at the appropriate time.”

Ameobi made his debut for Nigeria last November in the friendly against Venezuela and Keshi was hopeful the former England under-21 international would be part of his squad for the competition, which kicks off on 19 January.

But he has now become only the second England-based player after Danny Shittu to snub the Nations Cup in order to play for his club.

Millwall defender Shittu wrote to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and asked to be left out of the tournament.

The NFF rejected his letter and insisted he must make himself available but coach Keshi approved Shittu’s request.

The two-time champions have been drawn in Nations Cup Group C with Burkina Faso, Ethiopia and defending champions Zambia.

  • WAR: NFF to stop Ameobi from EPL games

WAR: NFF to stop Ameobi from EPL games

There are strong indications that Chieftains of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have asked eggheads of the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) to invoke its rule of deducting points from any game that Newcastle uses Super Eagles inviteee Shola Ameobi during the matches of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations holding in south africa from January 19 to February 10.

SportingLife gathered further that Newcastle’s management are poised to release Ameobi to Nigeria for the Africa Cup of Nations having realised the futility in keeping the Nigerian to play its Barclays English Premier League matches in the event that FIFA grants NFF it wishes as stated in the rules book.

SportingLife scooped from Newcastle’s portal on Wednesday night that: ” It seems a risk that Newcastle are taking, and it’s very likely the FA will not allow Shola to play for Newcastle during the time Nigeria are engaged in the AFCON in South Africa – but Newcastle may think that it’s better that Shola stays in Newcastle, even though he probably cannot play for the side.

“And then there’s a chance that Newcastle will simply accept the fact that Shola goes off to play for Nigeria, and travels maybe after tonight’s (Wednesday) game against Everton, although the 31 year-old hasn’t played for Newcastle in the last couple of games, since he scored that great winner against QPR in our last home game.”

It remains to be seen if Newcastle will trully release Ameobi to head for Faro this morning after the game against Everton.
