Yobe Stars strengthen technical crew with Bassey’s  appointment

Yobe Desert Stars FC have taken a decisive step toward improving their fortunes ahead of the second stanza of the 2026 Nigeria National League season with the unveiling of Coach Patrick Bassey as the club’s new Technical Adviser.

The appointment was confirmed by club chairman Mohammed Alkali Achama, who described Bassey’s arrival as a strategic move aimed at reinforcing the team’s technical framework and ensuring readiness for the league restart.

Bassey brings vast experience within Nigerian domestic football, having served in various coaching and leadership roles across different levels of the game. He is widely regarded as a disciplined tactician with a strong reputation for nurturing young talents.

His most recent role was with Ranchers Bees FC, where he was appointed head coach ahead of the 2025/26 NNL season amid expectations of a promotion push before his departure later in the campaign due to challenging working conditions.

Speaking after his unveiling, Bassey expressed appreciation to the club’s leadership.

“I am honoured to join Yobe Desert Stars at this important stage of the season. Our focus is to build a competitive team that reflects the club’s pride, passion, and ambition,” he said.

Yobe Desert Stars will now look to translate the new technical leadership into improved performances as they push forward in the NNL campaign.

Barau FC bolster survival push with three acquisitions

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) second stanza kicks off on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, with clubs at the lower end of the table scrambling for momentum in the race for survival.

Seventeenth-placed Barau FC will host Niger Tornadoes in Kano, while bottom-placed Kun Khalifat FC face a stern away test against Katsina United, also in Kano, as the league resumes after the mid-season break.

In a move that could significantly shape the fortunes of both sides, Kun Khalifat FC have confirmed the transfer of trio Uche Moses, Ebuka Nwokorie and Henry Ezeonye to Barau FC.

The deal represents one of the most notable mid-season transactions involving two relegation-threatened teams, with direct implications for their respective second-round ambitions.

For Barau FC, currently 17th on the NPFL table with 21 points, the acquisitions signal a clear intent to strengthen and pull away from the danger zone. The arrival of three players already accustomed to the league’s physical and tactical demands is expected to add depth, competition and renewed belief as they prepare for a crucial home fixture against Niger Tornadoes to open the second stanza.

Conversely, the departures leave Kun Khalifat FC, who sit 20th  with 18 points, facing an uphill task as they battle to revive their campaign.

  • Maresca proud of accomplishments at Chelsea

Maresca proud of accomplishments at Chelsea

Enzo Maresca bid an emotional farewell to Chelsea fans on Tuesday, saying he had accomplished all he could during an 18‑month spell that revitalised the club before his abrupt exit on New Year’s Day.

The Italian manager was the latest casualty in Chelsea’s revolving door of coaches under BlueCo ownership after one win in seven Premier League games forced the club to act.

Under his guidance, Chelsea claimed the Conference League, the Club World Cup and secured Champions League qualification last season for the first time in two years but the Italian did not see eye-to-eye with the board, leading to his exit.

“My journey with Chelsea began with the preliminary rounds of the Conference League. I leave with the inner peace of leaving a prestigious club like Chelsea where it deserves to be,” Maresca wrote on Instagram.

“I want to thank all the Chelsea fans for their support over the last 18 months. Support that was crucial to achieving Champions League qualification, winning the Conference League, and winning the Club World Cup.

“A special thank you to all the players who have accompanied me on this wonderful journey. I wish everyone who has shared every moment with me every success in this second half of the season and in the future.”

Following his departure last week, Chelsea’s under-21s head coach Calum McFarlane was placed in interim charge before Liam Rosenior was confirmed as Chelsea’s new head coach on Tuesday.

  • Palace boss Glasner dismisses links with Man United

Palace boss Glasner dismisses links with Man United

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner on Tuesday batted away questions over the managerial vacancy at Manchester United, saying cryptically he is “not allowed to bet”.

The Austrian is among the bookies’ favourites to replace Ruben Amorim, who was sacked on Monday after 14 months at Old Trafford.

Glasner, 51, has impressed since arriving at Palace in 2024, leading them to their first major trophy by winning the FA Cup last season.

The Palace boss, who is out of contract at the end of the season, said last month that talks over a potential new deal at Selhurst Park were on hold.

Speaking on the eve of his side’s home game against high-flying Aston Villa, he was evasive when asked about the United job.

“I’m not allowed to bet,” he said. “My contract has one paragraph (that says) I’m not allowed to bet. I don’t look at it.”

Glasner was asked whether it would be wise to back him to be United’s next manager.

“I also can’t give insider information because also I would be breaking my contract,” he said with a smile. “I’m Crystal Palace manager. It just makes no sense and it’s wasted time for you to ask me any more questions so I don’t talk about any other club.”

Glasner said the length of managers’ contracts had limited meaning.

“You can win trophies and six months later you aren’t the manager there anymore so I think if you see the length of a contract it doesn’t mean anything about the future,” he said.

“Even if I sign a new contract you could ask me every day, ‘What’s the future?’

“Ruben Amorim said he had 18 months left in his press conference and he’s not the manager anymore.

  • Englishman Rosenior takes over at Chelsea

Englishman Rosenior takes over at Chelsea

Liam Rosenior has been confirmed as Chelsea’s new head coach on a six-and-a-half-year deal, saying the opportunity to succeed Enzo Maresca at Stamford Bridge was too good to turn down.

The 41-year-old Strasbourg boss told a press conference earlier in the day at the Ligue 1 club that he had “verbally agreed” on the move.

Chelsea officially announced that Rosenior, who will take charge of his first match in the FA Cup at the weekend, had signed a deal until 2032.

“I am extremely humbled and honoured to be appointed head coach of Chelsea Football Club,” he said in a statement on the Premier League team’s website. “This is a club with a unique spirit and a proud history of winning trophies.

“My job is to protect that identity and create a team that reflects these values in every game we play as we continue winning trophies.”

Rosenior has just three years’ experience as a manager, with Hull City and French club Strasbourg, and has never coached in the Premier League.

But he had been widely touted as the frontrunner to succeed Maresca since the Italian left Chelsea last week.

Strasbourg are part of the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned BlueCo multi-club ownership group that also controls Chelsea.

Rosenior is Chelsea’s fourth permanent managerial appointment since BlueCo took control of the club previously owned by Roman Abramovich in 2022.

The club said the Englishman had shown “he can build teams with a clear way of playing while setting the highest standards with players on and off the pitch”.

“While there will continue to be a focus on player development, the club’s expectations and ambitions remain high,” Chelsea added.

Rosenior said he had wanted to announce the news himself in Strasbourg because of his deep feelings for the French club.

The former defender, whose father, Leroy Rosenior, was also a player and a manager, told reporters the chance to manage Chelsea was “an opportunity I cannot turn down”.

“I’m so excited about the future. I cannot lie. My whole life I’ve worked to be a coach,” he said. “To be presented with this opportunity to manage a world-class football club is something I’ve always dreamed of.

“With that is a mixed emotion of sadness of what I’m leaving behind.”

Chelsea interim manager Calum McFarlane told reporters that he would remain in charge for Wednesday’s Premier League match against Fulham.

McFarlane said he had spoken briefly to the club’s new boss.

“He’s obviously really excited about taking the role,” he said. “It’s a brief conversation, so my understanding is he’s going to be at Cobham (Chelsea’s training ground) later on today.”

Rosenior played in the Premier League and the second-tier Championship in England. His clubs included Fulham, Reading and Hull.

He had a variety of coaching roles at Derby, which included 12 matches as caretaker manager at the start of the 2022⁄23 season.

Later in 2022 Rosenior took over as manager of Championship team Hull.

He was sacked after 18 months and in July 2024 was appointed by Strasbourg, who he guided to seventh place in Ligue 1 last season.

McFarlane said Rosenior’s teams played “aggressive, front-foot football” and that his appointment would inspire English managers.

Since the formation of the Premier League in 1992, not a single English manager has won the title.

“I’m sure all young English coaches from an academy background will be in some way, regardless of who you support, rooting for Liam,” said McFarlane.

“So it is really inspirational for young academy English coaches.”

Maresca left Chelsea abruptly on New Year’s Day following a deterioration in his relationship with club bosses, just months after winning the UEFA Conference League and Club World Cup.

Chelsea are fifth in the Premier League, 17 points behind Arsenal, with just one win in their past eight league games.

    • …outburst with Lookman resolved

A top official of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has dismissed rumours that Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen would leave the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) camp in Morocco.

On Tuesday, some reports claimed that Osimhen said he was leaving the camp for Turkey. “Confirmed reports have it that Victor Osimhen said he was done with the national team. He dropped his accreditation and said he was going to Turkey.”

However, the NFF official clarified the situation after speaking with FIFA- and CAF-accredited journalist Adepoju Samuel, confirming that the matter had been resolved.

Samuel wrote on his X handle on Tuesday, “A top team official just confirmed the latest situation over yesterday’s incident.

“The official said everything has been sorted since last night, and we are all good. There was no discussion about Osimhen leaving the tournament. The issue has been resolved as a family.”

The incident occurred in the 63rd minute, when Osimhen appeared frustrated after Lookman, who had already created two chances for him, failed to capitalize on an opportunity. Footage showed Osimhen pulling away from Captain Wilfred Ndidi, pointing at Lookman, and shouting in displeasure. He could be heard saying in pidgin:

“No try am again,” meaning “do not try that again.” Osimhen later requested to be substituted and was booed by fans as Moses Simon replaced him.

The outburst sparked criticism on social media, with fans questioning Osimhen’s behaviour despite Nigeria’s dominant performance.

However, Lookman addressed the rumours on Tuesday by posting pictures on Instagram with Osimhen and Bruno Onyemaechi on the pitch after the win, captioning the images:

    “Together always.”

Both Eagles coach Eric Chelle and Captain Wilfred Ndidi have also dismissed claims of a misunderstanding between the two forwards, urging Nigerians to continue supporting the team as they prepare for their quarter-final clash against either Algeria or DR Congo.

Protest rocks Ondo stadium over appointment of acting general manager

Sporting activities at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure were disrupted on Tuesday as sports contingents protested the appointment of Mrs Evelyn Lebi as Acting General Manager of the Ondo State Sports Council.

The protesters, made up of sports union members and leaders, coaches and athletes, said the appointment could negatively affect the future of sports administration in the state.

The Nation reports that Mrs Lebi was earlier appointed by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa as a part-time member of the board of the Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA), representing the Ministry of Sports, on June 23, 2024, before her subsequent elevation to Acting General Manager of the State Sports Council.

Speaking to journalists on behalf of the protesters, the Coordinating Chairman of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE), Fisayo Bello, said the state of sports in Ondo was far from satisfactory and required a competent technocrat to revitalise the sector.

Bello argued that the Sports Council needed strong and experienced leadership to overcome its current challenges and therefore called on Governor Aiyedatiwa to reconsider the appointment of Mrs Lebi to the position.

“We need someone with passion for sports who can take us back to our glorious days, not backwards.

“She contested four years ago, we said no and we are saying no now, we want a better person, we want a technocrat that can take us back to our glorious day, not backwards,” he lamented.

Chairman of the Ondo State Professional Coaches Association, Joshua Ogunbiyi, who also spoke, said stakeholders had previously expressed reservations about Mrs Lebi’s suitability.

Mr Ogunbiyi added that the sector needed fresh energy and effective leadership to move forward.

“The stage at which we are now, sport is not moving forward. We want somebody, a vibrant and competent general manager, this time around. Somebody that will come and revive sport development.

“A person like Lebi has contested for this position for over three times. And we have made government to realise that this woman is not competent. This woman is not a good woman.

“She served here about 12, 13 years ago before she left and if we continue to say to the world all the atrocities this woman has committed, where she previously served, in fact, will not leave this place.

“And that is why we believe that if government want to bring anybody, we are not against the governor to bring whoever he feels can come here and revive sport. But as far as we are concerned, Lebi is not one of them,” he said.

Similarly, Mr Idowu Afun, General Captain of Ondo State Athletes, appealed to the state government to appoint a leader who would inspire confidence among athletes and stakeholders.

When contacted, Mrs Lebi declined comments over calls for her sack from the position.

But reacting to the protest, Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Henry Omoyofunmi, said the protest was unnecessary.

Mrs Omoyofunmi said Mrs Lebi was a qualified professional with over 15 years’ experience at the Sports Council and was currently serving as Director of Sports in the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

He explained that her appointment followed due process after the expiration of the tenure of the former general manager, adding that the Head of Service had posted her to the council in line with civil service procedures.

The commissioner expressed confidence that the appointment would strengthen, rather than hinder, sports development in the state.

Rosenior said Strasbourg first-team coach Kalifa Cisse, assistant head coach Justin Walker and head of analysis Ben Warner will join him at Chelsea.
