Judo federation to discover, nurture just 8 talents

The Nigeria Judo Federation (NJF) said on Wednesday that it would discover just eight talented judokas at the ongoing 18th National Sports Festival in Lagos.

Olakitan DeSouza, the federation’s Technical Director, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the federation limited its capacity to just eight talented judokas due to lack of funds. “The discovered eight talented judokas, male and female, will be monitored and groomed after the festival,” DeSouza said.

The director, who did not, however, stipulate the number of gender for discovery, said that the discovered talents would be nurtured to become elite athletes.

“We want to pick just eight talented judokas because we do not have enough finance and sponsors. In recent times, sponsors do not want to be associated with the sport, so we cannot stretch ourselves beyond our limits,” he said.

DeSouza, however, added that the federation was working on a platform to ensure that the game was embraced, like other martial arts in the country.

“In 2013, we planned to introduce the sport in schools, but we realised that other martial art sports had gained more recognition, ahead of judo,” he said.

DeSouza, however, insisted that the sport was good because a judokas can easily defend him or herself in any situation. He then encouraged more women to be part of the martial game, saying that it was not meant for men alone.

Anichebe is Everton’s most disciplined player

Super Eagles player Victor Anichebe is the most disciplined player in his English Premier League side Everton FC.

The Survey recently conducted at the Merseyside, Anichebe was adjudged to be the most disciplined player having received the least caution from the Match officials.

The Survey taken at the Goodison Park Area was done as part of the review for the 2011/2012 season.

Other players who were considered alongside Anichebe includes American playmaker Landon Donovan, Louis Saha, Jermaine Beckford, amongst others but all of them have since departed the club making him the most qualified.

The 2008 Beijing Olympic silver medallist has been cautioned on only 11 ocassions in all his eight seasons with the team.

Anichebe has also been rated as the second best player in terms of goal scoring performance by his English Premier League side .

The Nigeria international came behind Nikika Jelavic at the ratings as the Croat was able to amass 11 goals to top the best performer in terms of goal scoring.

The rating which took into cognizance all the goals scored in all competitions for the 2011/2012 season.

Anichebe, it would be recalled, is just returning from a short injury lay off and is yet to add to his two goals as he last scored in his team’s 3-0 away win at Swansea in September, 2012.

It is expected that the promising player would look to make his mark at Everton at the current 2012/2013 season as his team manager David Moyes still looks to impose a lot of confidence on the huge attacker who most times comes in as the saving grace of the Merseyside team.

    Taiwo fears Eagles crash

Taye Taiwo has warned that Nigeria could bomb at the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa if they do not play as a team.

“If we can’t play as a team, work for each other, we can’t win anything in South Africa,” Taiwo said in an interview on Wednesday. “We must sacrifice for each other and then we stand a good chance of winning the competition.”

The Eagles, who have won the AFCON twice, are pitched in Group C along with defending Zambia, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia. The Dynamo Kiev defender also said he would be delighted to return to the Super Eagles in time for the AFCON. The AC Milan loanee has not been considered by Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi since a shambolic performance against Rwanda in Kigali in February.

However, there are now strong indications Keshi will hand him another chance with the Eagles and the left back said he would be delighted to take it.

“I’m ready to play for Nigeria again because it is my country and I cannot play for another country,” stated Taiwo, who has featured at three Nations Cups.

The defender equally dismissed talk that he has problems with Keshi, insisting he enjoys a cordial relationship with all the national team coaches. He maintained his club future will only be decided at the end of his loan spell in Ukraine. “Right now I’m focused on playing for Dynamo Kiev and we just have to wait and see what happens at the end of the season,” he said.

BATTLE OF BAMAKO: Eaglets get Guinean refs

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has asked the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to properly monitor Sunday’s 2013 African Under-17 Championship decisive second leg-final round qualifier against Mali in Bamako.

The continental soccer ruling body has named Guinean officials for the game with Ahmed Sekou Toure as the centre referee while the trio of Sidibe Sidiki, Toure Moustapha and Keita Yakhouba would respectively serve as the first assistant, second assistant and fourth official respectively. Ivorian Doumbia Berna would oversee the game as match commissioner.

But Muazu Suleiman, the Chairman of the NFF’s referee committee said CAF should have been circumspect in its choice of Guinean officials since Nigeria defeated the West African country in the second round of the qualifier last month.

The Golden Eaglets who have scored 19 goals in their last five qualifying matches; conceded a goal through a spurious penalty in their 4-1 away win against Niger in September.

“The NFF has already raised a concern about officials for this match to CAF and we want CAF to monitor this game properly,” said the highly respected retired referee “Maybe it was an oversight by CAF because picking a Guinean referee for this match is not totally tidy since Nigeria defeated Guinea recently.”

Suleiman, who incidentally was the leader of delegation to Niamey and Conakry, faulted the choice of Guineans officials for Sunday’s crucial game.

Suleiman, who incidentally was the leader of delegation to Eaglets’ last two away matches in Niamey and Conakry, said he was confident that Nigeria would scale the Malian hurdle despite the lopsided choice of officials.

“By the grace of Almighty Allah, we shall qualify for the Under-17 tournament in Morocco,” Suleiman further stated.”What we are praying for is fair officiating because referees are human beings and CAF should not have even picked any official that may have sympathy whatsoever for any team.”

NSC denies collecting N400m for EKO 2012

The National Sports Commission, NSC has vehemently denied the claim by the chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Sports Geoffrey Gaya that the body had collected a staggering N400 million for the staging of the National Sports Festival.

The Director-General of the NSC Dr. Patrick Ekeji said: “The claim by Honourable Gaya that we had collected N400 million for the festival is not only fictitious, but mischievous and misleading. I don’t know where he got this wrong information from. But to the best of my knowledge, the NSC has not gotten any money for the festival. I challenge Gaya to come forward with evidence of where any money was released to the NSC for the sports festival.

“We have not been given any money for the festival. It’s unfair and unfortunate for Gaya to spread such misinformation about the NSC. We do not have any money for the sports festival. So, the statement credited to him, if it is true is unfounded and without substance. I am really disappointed that the honourable member could go to town with such fallacy.”

“We were together during the opening ceremony and he did not bother to confirm anything from me before going to town. I think this is an attempt to misrepresent the NSC, but this is most unfortunate.

“The truth of the matter is that the NSC has not received any money for the festival, so nobody should drag the NSC into any controversy. We have been running the things within the limit of available resources, but we frown at people who try to present fiction as fact. I challenge him to go public with facts and not fiction,” Ekeji concluded.

Keshi to Nigerians: My Eagles will fly

Nigeria’s Head Coach, Stephen Keshi has assured Nigerians of an improved Super Eagles squad at the forthcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2013 in South Africa.

The ‘Big Boss’ as he is fondly called by fans and admirers urged football fans to ensure they cheer the team from the stands during the biennial championship slated from January 19 to February 10, 2013.

“Are you prepared for South Africa? Watch! In fact come and experience a change in the dream team…I will love to see all of you. Up Eagles!!!! Enjoy yourselves,” Keshi posted on his Facebook wall on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, egg-heads of the Glass House believe the Keshi-led Eagles’ technical crew should by now know the foreign-based players that they hopes to parade in the South Africa.

The continent’s football governing body, CAF had on November 23 fixed the midnight of January 9, 2013 as the deadline for submission of all the final squads for the 16-team tournament.

Nigeria will battle defending champions Zambia, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia in Group C of the 2013 AFCON.

England laments Moses’ loss to Nigeria

England Under 21 coach Stuart Pearce has been singled out for blame after Chelsea’s dual-nationality forward Victor Moses chose to play for Nigeria rather than England.

Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan, who oversaw Moses’s development at Selhurst Park, says the often taciturn Pearce should have done more to make the 21-year-old welcome during his time with his England side.

And managers Neil Warnock and Roberto Martinez, who had Moses in their respective teams at Palace and Wigan, have also criticised the FA for not persuading the player to pick England.

Jordan’s faith in Moses’s potential extended to the multi-millionaire football chairman having a £50,000 bet with former Arsenal forward Paul Merson that Moses would win more England caps than Merson’s tally of 21 — although that wager has been voided by the Nigeria decision.

The FA strongly defend Pearce’s interactions with Moses, saying that a lot of effort was made to keep the player in the national set-up. And they point to plenty of other young internationals opting for England when given a choice.

Roy Hodgson’s assistant Gary Neville was asked about Moses snubbing England while he was doing the Sky co-commentary of the Chelsea-Manchester City game last Sunday.

Neville shifted the blame on to the system that allows England to develop youngsters through junior sides only to lose them at senior level.

    Musa targets Russian League crown

CSKA Moscow leading scorer Ahmed Musa has said his team are focused on winning the Russia Premier League this season.

CSKA lead the table with 40 points from 17 games after a crucial 1-1 draw at champions Zenit Saint Petersburg on Monday.

Anzhi are second on 37 points with Zenit three points behind.

Ahmed Musa told MTNFootball.com that his army team have their sights fixed on winning the league and the best way to go about it is to start well which they are doing.

“We want to win the league. That is our target and we are pursuing it. We are leading table and we intend to be there till season end. We know it is a big task, but we are prepared for it,” the Nigeria forward informed MTNFootball.com

“We won’t let the results and our current position get into our head, but rather we will strive to get better game after game.”

CSKA last won the Russian league six years ago and that was their 10th such triumph.

Musa was again key to CSKA Moscow securing a draw at Zenit St.Petersburg when Dzagoev, whom he set free at goal, was brought down inside the vital area for the penalty, which was converted to give the visitors an 85th minute equaliser.

Osaze can make Keshi’s squad —Clarke

Steve Clarke expects striker Peter Odemwingie to be called up by Nigeria for the upcoming African Nations Cup if he continues his current form for West Brom.

But head coach Clarke is confident Albion have the strength in depth to cope with the loss of Odemwingie if he is called into international action in January.

Odemwingie has produced a string of fine performances to help the Baggies into third spot in the Barclays Premier League ahead of last night’s clash at Swansea.

He has had an up and down relationship with his country, but Clarke said: “If Peter continues in the current form he’s in, I’d think Nigeria would select him.

“He has been playing really well for us, he has been fantastic.

“If Nigeria want to go with their best players, I’m sure Peter would be in that squad for the African Nations Cup.

“But we have cover for Peter’s absence as well. I’ve said that all along if people get called up, we have the squad to cover him.”

Clarke is confident Albion’s players will not be carried away with their current success.

They will be bidding for a fifth successive top-flight win for the first time in 34 years at the Liberty Stadium.

Festival bubbles!: Welcome to my media.com

If you wish to fully appreciate the coming of GSM into our lives as a nation, then perhaps the best place to do that is at the ongoing 18th National Sports Festival in Lagos. With athletes, technical officials, spectators and security officials alike flaunting all manner of phones ranging from Chinese made phones and accessories, sometimes called ‘Chinco’ or ‘Palasa’ in the local parlance, to highly sophisticated smart phones, everybody is a media man and everybody is in the media. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mean that everybody is doing the pressmen’s job, far from it. But here everybody has a camera phone so everybody is recording for pleasure or posterity, if you like.

Every athlete about to compete or rehearsing for action has a friend or teammate capturing the action for him. Of course, the photos are not going to be in the phones for the fun of it, definitely Facebook will host large chunks of it for friends who are not privileged to be at the point of action to enjoy the action live!
