  • Gomez: Bayern must win the Bundesliga

Mario Gomez has stressed that winning the Bundesliga title is an absolute must for Bayern Munich this term following their lack of success in the previous two campaigns.

The Bavarians have not won a major trophy since winning the domestic double in 2010, and Gomez has insisted that they have to keep up their current form in order to win silverware again this season.

“The important thing is that we continue our run through to Christmas and don’t let up,” Gomez told reporters in the wake of Bayern’s 5-0 win over Hannover.

“We’ve won nothing for two seasons, so we have to win the league. We’re on track, provided we keep it up.

“We were on track last year as well, only to veer off course. That mustn’t happen this season.”

Bayern currently sit atop of the Bundesliga table and hold a nine-point lead over second-placed Borussia Dortmund.

  • 2013 African Cup of Nations; Keshi’s Eagles 80 per cent ready

2013 African Cup of Nations; Keshi’s Eagles 80 per cent ready

Contrary to fears in some quarters about the readiness of the Super Eagles squad for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations holding in South Africa between January 19th and February 2013, the Chief Coach of the Nigerian team, Stephen Keshi has already picked 80 per cent of the players he hopes to parade in the competition.

A credible source close to the team blared, “do you think the coach doesn’t know what he is doing? He is already sure of at least 18 of the players he would parade in the Nations Cup.

“I always laugh when you people (sports journalists) talk about the readiness of the team. Keshi is a very serious person and very professional in whatever he does. He already has his team. He is only putting finishing touches to some areas in the team.

“He is only worried about the right back and central midfield of the team. He is hoping that Gabriel Reuben regains his full fitness on time before the competition, if not he may have to look the way of other players like Sani Kaita, Raheem Lawal to pair Nosa Igiebor in that area. Also, Keshi is desperately looking for lasting solution as regards the right back position. Besides this areas I think the team is ready”, the source revealed.

Keshi is expected to be back from his holidays in the United States of America on December 15th, 2012, two days before the start of the final preparations with the home based Eagles after which the team would jet out to Faro in Portugal in January 4th, 2013 for the final phase of Nigeria’s preparations for the competition.

  • 2013 AfricaN Cup of Nations South African Police to secure Eagles

2013 AfricaN Cup of Nations South African Police to secure Eagles

The South African Police Service has assured football fans of adequate security at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations tournament which takes place from Jan. 19 to Feb. 10.

“Everything is in place with regards to security; we started planning for the tournament as early as May this year,” the Deputy Minister of Police, Maggie Sotyu, told newsmen in Pretoria on Tuesday. Both national and international screening regarding the participating 16 teams has been completed. Security will be provided for all the teams, including Bafana Bafana 24/7,’’ Sotyu said.

“We will strengthen security at all ports of entry during this period, especially our borders, airports, seaports and border points. All the teams would be provided round the clock security; from the airport to their hotels, their training sessions and to match venues; to ensure maximum security for them,’’she said.

Sotyu also disclosed that a permanent detachment of police officers will be deployed to all the hotels where the participating teams will be staying. She also said that Home Affairs was ready to handle the movement of both people and goods simultaneously at the country’s various entry points.

“We also have our own police officers that we’ve trained, with regard to assisting at the ports of entry; in case we need more man power. Buses carrying players will be escorted by the police at all times; each and every movement of the buses carrying the teams will be covered by the police,” she said.

The deputy police minister also said that special courts to try criminal cases during the tournament will not be set up this time around.

“Dedicated investigators would be in place to focus on the cases that may come up during the tournament. While there would be the normal procedure of handling the cases, especially criminal cases during the tournament which would be prioritised in the courts of law,’’ Sotyu said.

On the issue of crowd control she pointed out that the police were going to put adequate measures in place to keep the crowd under control in and outside the stadiums.

Meanwhile, Lt. Gen. Elias Mawela, the Chairperson of the National Joint Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) said part of the security concept to effectively contain any form of hooliganism was also in place.

“Part of our security concept to deal with hooliganism in and around the stadiums would entail the positioning of ‘spotters’ amongst the spectators to identity the so-called hooligans. Once they have been identified, they are to remove them from the stadium and taken into police custody.

“We would ensure that we have a rapport with the intelligence community that we are working with in the region, consisting the Southern African Regional Police Chief Council Organisation (SARPCCO), and Interpol. They will also assist us to monitor the movement of people coming to our country for the tournament,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that SARPCCO is an official forum comprising of all the police chiefs in the Southern Africa region. Mawela added that known football hooligans from neighbouring countries would be apprehended before they set foot in South Africa.

“We are not going to lower our high standards, which we are known for in the hosting of landmark events,’’he said.

He stressed that alternate plans would be adopted for the security guards, who will be working at the stadiums.

“We have plan D and even plan E, for the private security guards. We have a reserve group at a national level that can be moved around the country at short notice. We have contingency funds in place to ensure the quick dispatch of personnel to the affected stadium. There will not be any problem with regards to this issue,” Mwela said.

NAN reports that the 2013 AFCON will hold from Jan.19 to Feb. 10 in five centres across South Africa, the country will be hosting the competition for the second time since 1996.

  • Milner: City lacked a cutting edge

Manchester City midfielder James Milner felt the champions were missing only the killer touch as they were forced to settle for a goalless draw at Chelsea.

City were unable to reclaim top spot in the Barclays Premier League on Sunday as they endured a frustrating time in front of goal against their title rivals at Stamford Bridge.

While some may see that as further proof City are still lacking the dynamism of last season, they remain unbeaten and Milner views it as a good sign that they are disappointed with such a result.

The 26-year-old told City TV: “Any time you come away from a ground like this, against the European champions, and end up being disappointed not to get a win is a positive thing.

“We were the better side, we had the better chances and restricted them to not too many.

“I thought we played a good game and didn’t quite get the three points.

“We have got things to work on. We need to take our chances – we had a number of corners and chances that didn’t go our way.

“When we are on top in games and have territory and chances we are not quite putting teams to bed like we should be.

“Hopefully we can improve on that during the season.

“There are positives and negatives to take out of the game.”

Milner, who made his first Premier League start since being sent off at West Brom a month ago, did not feel there was anything wrong with City’s approach to the game.

Roberto Mancini’s men now trail rivals Manchester United by a point at the summit ahead of a midweek round of fixtures which sees the champions travel to Wigan.

Milner said: “It shows mental strength because sometimes, when you have those days, it is easy to think it’s not our day and sit back and let the other team into the game and have chances themselves.

“I don’t think we did that. We were pretty solid and moved the ball around pretty well.

“The pitch wasn’t the greatest but we tried to be positive and it just didn’t happen for us at the business end.”

The game was short on entertainment with Chelsea managing just one shot on target and City five. Most of the headlines were made by the home fans’ negative reaction to the arrival of their new manager Rafael Benitez.

The visitors’ best opportunity came when Sergio Aguero headed at Petr Cech late in the first half.

Another area City shaded was the corner count, having 11 to their hosts’ six.

Milner said: “When you are on top of teams you are going to have set-pieces.

“We have got quality delivery with ‘Kolar’ (Aleksandar Kolarov) and David (Silva) and people like that.

“We need to maybe come up with a few new things and make sure we attack that ball. I’m sure the goals will come.”

  • Jose Mourinho dismisses rift talk

    Jose Mourinho dismisses rift talk

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has stressed that his relationship with the club’s officials remains unchanged despite the team’s struggles.

La Liga champions Real suffered a 1-0 defeat at Betis on Saturday and are now in third place in the league, 11 points behind table-toppers Barcelona.

Despite the problems on the pitch, Mourinho believes there are no issues off it.

“Here, I am working as I have for many years. There is no question, the relationship with the club is as usual,” the Portuguese told reporters.

“Now, I have a very, very, very good relationship, absolutely superb relationship with the president, Jose Angel Sanchez.”

Despite the claims of cordiality, Mourinho accepts he will be judged on results alone and concedes his side’s recent performances open the door for criticism.

“It is the club that matters and who can say if they are happy with what we are doing. The assessment must be done at the end,” he said.

“Maybe the club is not happy with me and thinks there is room for improvement.”

Turning his attention to Madrid’s Copa del Rey participation, Mourinho said he would be using the fixture to give fringe players more game time.

“I would like people and fans to be kind to our three young players that we will be playing. The team need to play very well, and I think we will qualify,” he said.

  • CAF National Team of the year award Super Eagles missing

CAF National Team of the year award Super Eagles missing

    • Chipolopolo lead nominations
    • Afcon debutants Cape verde make list

Super Eagles’ group opponents in the AFCON 2013 in South Africa, the Chipolopolo of Zambia, have been nominated for this year’s CAF National Team of the year award.

Not surprisingly, Stephen Keshi’s boys were not named. Other national teams that did make the list include Nations Cup finalists Cote d’ Ivoire, Central African Republic (CAR) and AFCON debutants Cape Verde who are scheduled to face host South Africa in the opener on January 19.

The nominees released by the Confederation of African football (CAF) for the award billed for December 20th in Accra Ghana, is coming just a few days after a shortlist for the African Footballer of the Year was released with Eagles trio Mikel Obi, Victor Moses and John Utaka missing.

In the Women’s National Team of the Year, recently crowned African Women’s Champions, Equatorial Guinea will slug it out with Ghana’s U-17 side that finished third in this year’s FIFA World Cup and Nigeria’s Super Falcons for the honours.

Egypt’s Mohamed Salah, Senegalese young striker, Pape Moussa Konate and Kenyan midfielder Victor Wanyama have been nominated for the Most Promising Talent.

CAF will announce the top three nominees in each category of the Year and by late December after the voting by CAF relevant Standing Committees, namely the Media, Technical and Football committees.

  • Llorente: My future is with Athletic

Llorente: My future is with Athletic

Athletic Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente has dismissed exit talks and has reiterated his desire to stay at San Mames.

The Spain international was ready to leave the club in September, and has since been linked with a move to Italian champions Juventus during the next transfer window.

However, the 27-year-old is adamant that his only concern is doing well for the Northerners.

“My only future is to continue with Athletic and give everything here,” he told reporters.

“I’m not thinking about the future and I don’t care. I focus only on playing and helping the team.”

He then commented on his lack of first-team action this season compared to last term, having found himself down the pecking order with team-mate Aduriz selected ahead of him.

However, when he gets his opportunity, Llorente insists he is ready to become a starter and get into the scoring habit again.

He added: “The fact that I haven’t played regularly this season could translate to a lack of confidence in scoring goals.

“Some might call it bad luck, or maybe the confidence would see one of the goals go in, I don’t know.

“Hopefully I can get a few goals by the end of the season, the more the merrier, and get the team as high as they can in the table.”

Athletic currently sit 14th in La Liga and face table-toppers Barcelona in their next league encounter.

  • 2013 Africa Cup of Nations Moses ‘ready to die for Nigeria’

2013 Africa Cup of Nations Moses ‘ready to die for Nigeria’

Chelsea forward Victor Moses has admitted he is already looking forward to representing Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations.

The former Wigan man will be missing from the Blues’ squad for up to six weeks during the tournament in South Africa, but is excited to represent his country in the competition for the first time.

“This will certainly be my first Africa Cup of Nations. And I want to make it a memorable one by doing my best and giving Nigeria all I’ve got,” Moses told Goal.com.

“It will be an honour for me to represent Nigeria at this stage in African football after accepting to play for the country in short a time. I want to take my club form to play at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

“I am already focusing on what will happen in South Africa because African football has it own peculiarities. You have to be strong and determined to do well against an African side and I am already tunning my mind to the tackles and strong challenges in all the matches.

“But I think I am equal to the task because I am also a strong player. No matter the way you look at the Super Eagles, we have a good team that can win the trophy under an enabling envronment.

“Stephen Keshi has been able to build the fighting spirit in us and Nigerians will see a new team during the Africa Cup of Nations.

“I want to give everything in all the matches and I know all the players that will be selected will also be ready to die for Nigeria if need be.”

  • Pardew: Tough times for Toon

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has admitted he is facing his biggest challenge since arriving at St James’ Park.

The Magpies will head into Wednesday night’s difficult trip to Stoke having lost their last three Barclays Premier League games as a result of Sunday’s tame 2-0 defeat at Southampton and with just a single victory to their name in eight league outings.

A return of six points from a possible 24 has left them languishing in 14th place in the table and seven points adrift of Everton in fifth position, where they finished at the end of the last campaign.

Asked if he is enduring his toughest spell since replacing Chris Hughton at the helm in December 2010, Pardew told the Evening Chronicle: “For sure – there’s no doubt about that. We are really having to fight.

“We have got players, let’s be honest, who aren’t playing as well as we know they can. We are struggling for a bit of confidence.”

The demands of the club’s involvement in the Europa League coupled with a crippling injury list, which has exposed their lack of transfer activity during the summer, have left the Magpies fighting to keep their heads above water.

Central defender Steven Taylor became the latest man to head for the treatment room after damaging a hamstring at the St Mary’s Stadium.

Pardew headed for the South Coast with no fewer than 11 senior players unavailable, and he admitted Taylor’s name was likely to be added to that list for the game at the Britannia Stadium.

If so, he will be without arguably his most physical central defender for one of the fixtures where his particular brand of football is ideally suited, midfielder creator Yohan Cabaye and the mercurial Hatem Ben Arfa, who damaged a hamstring in Thursday night’s 1-1 Europa League draw with Maritimo.

In the circumstances, the impending return of skipper Fabricio Coloccini from suspension could hardly be more timely.

Pardew said: “We are missing some key players, but one of them will be back on Wednesday night, thank goodness.

“It looks like Steven’s going to miss out, so it’s one thing after another.”

Newcastle’s 3-1 victory at Stoke on October 31 represented perhaps the first indication that something special was happening on Tyneside last season.

Demba Ba’s fine hat-trick against the club which had decided against signing him during the previous January secured a deserved three points and paved the way for a concerted push towards the upper reaches of the table.

This time around, they will head for the Potteries with confidence at a low ebb and facing a fourth consecutive Premier League defeat for the first time since the 2008-09 campaign, at the end of which they were relegated.

That run of fixtures, which coincided with Kevin Keegan’s departure from his second spell in charge on Tyneside, saw them lose at Arsenal and West Ham either side of a home defeat by Hull, and then go down 2-1 to Blackburn at St James’ on September 27, 2008 with interim manager Joe Kinnear watching from the stands.
