Akpeyi signed a new deal last week that will keep him at the Owerri-based side for the 2012/2013 league season.

The Super Eagles shot-stopper said the recruitment of new players by the management will put every player on his toes.

“I took the bold decision last week to stick with Heartland for the new season and I’ve endorsed the new terms. I’m satisfied with the terms and have agreed to work with what is on ground.

“It poses a new challenge not only to me but other players, too, who have endorsed the contract papers.

“There are new recruits who will definitely make everybody to stand up. Expectations are high on my side, I want to keep working very hard to live up to the billing.

“I know Heartland will have a good season with the quality of players in their fold. I fervently pray we click at the same time so as to churn out good results,” he said.

Akpeyi said he is not worried by the presence of former Enugu Rangers’ goalkeeper, Ebele Obi at the Naze Millionaires’ camp.

“We’ll have healthy competition which will bring out the best in us and in the long run profit the team. It’s a welcome development, the more the merrier,” he said.

Heartland former number one, Chijioke Ejiogu, popularly known as Arugo Monkey has headed to Garden City side, Sharks.

Nigerians will cherish Eko 2012 — Team Lagos Captain

Team Lagos Captain, Babatunde Mohammed, said on Sunday that the 18th National Sports Festival (NSF) holding in Lagos, would be cherished by Nigerians for many years to come.

“The world should expect the best from Team Lagos because we are ready and prepared. We have been in camp since May. This is our own Olympics and it should be celebrated as such,” he said.

Mohammed told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that Team Lagos was the first contingent to arrive at the Games Village. The captain, whose team arrived the Moremi Hall of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) at about 5.45 p.m. on Saturday, said Team Lagos would not disappoint Gov. Babatunde Fashola and the people of Lagos.

He commended the state government for nurturing its athletes from the grassroots. The captain pledged that the Team was poised to surpass its performance at the “Garden City Games” in Port Harcourt in 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Team Lagos athletes to the Games were conveyed in LAGBUS buses in batches, with the last set of athletes arriving at about 7.00 p.m. Mohammed, a para-table tennis player, urged his teammates in the various sports to be dedicated by putting in their very best in their events.

“My teammates should go into the competition and put in their very best to ensure that they do the state proud. They should adhere strictly to the tenets of sportsmanship,” he said.

NAN reports that beddings were still being brought in at 7:15 p.m., while the repainting of Mariere Hall was still ongoing.

  • Babadidi set to return from injury

Babadidi set to return from injury

Gombe United striker, Mustapha Babadidi will return to action when the new season gets underway after completing his recovery from a horrific shin injury.

The 17-year-old striker has not played since suffering a gash to his shin against Enugu Rangers at the Pantami Stadium on March 21.

However, he has resumed training for the past two months and has moved into contention for a place in Maurice Cooreman’s squad.

“I am now fully fit and it has been going well in training,” he told supersport.com. It hasn’t been easy being on the sidelines for so long, but I thank God it is over now and I’m really looking forward to playing again next season.” Babadidi had taken the league by storm, banging in ten goals in 15 matches as the Scorpions enjoyed a spell at the top of the premier league.

They equally suffered a dip in form in his absence, but he believes they could reproduce the explosive start of last season and even sustain it this time.

“I think we can do well because we still have the nucleus of last season’s squad in place and we are determined to make up for the disappointment of last season after showing so much promise,” he said.

  • Ideye nets 12th goal

    Ideye nets 12th goal

As the countdown to the 2013 AFCON in South Africa heats up, one star that looks set to win one of Coach Stephen Keshi’s attacking shirts is Brown Ideye. The former Ocean Boys ace scored his 12th goal of the season by netting a brace in the Kyiv Derby game against Arsenal in the Ukraine Premier Liga.

The Nigerian, who put behind him Dynamo Kyiv’s Wednesday night’s unimpressive UEFA Champions League home loss to PSG, gave the Ukrianian giants a two-goal lead with a 44th minute strike after Khacheridi had put them in front in the 40th minute following an assist from Miguel Veloso.

An 88th strike from Husyev saw Dynamo compounding the woes of Arsenal Kyiv who are now placed 8th on the 16-team league format.

Ideye then made the night a sweet one for himself when he scored his second in extra time after combining with Dudu to make it 4-0 for his team.

Similarly, less than 48hours since Kalu Uche fired his 7th goal of the season for Kasimpasa in Turkish Super Lig, former Super Eagles striker, Micheal Eneramo showed why he should be considered for the 23-man party to South Africa when he scored Sivasspor’s third in the 4-2 victory over Kayserispor on Sunday.

LAWMA begins 24-hr service on Games venues

The Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the 18th National Sports Festival says the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) will begin 24 hours service at the Games venues from Sunday.

Dr. Kweku Tandoh, the LOC Secretary-General, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos that refuse collection would be done at the Games Villages and sports venues.

Tandoh said that “Operation keep Lagos Clean’’ was still in full force, adding that the state would maintain a cleaner environment throughout the festival.

He said that apart from LAWMA other cleaning outfits had also been engaged to assist.

“The operation keep Lagos clean is still in force. LAWMA will begin 24 hours service a day to the opening ceremony to clear dirt.

“Some other cleaning outfits will also assist LAWMA to ensure the work is done well,’’ Tandoh said.

He refuted a claim that the Teslim Balogun Stadium was full of filth, saying that the little refuse visible was from the contractors renovating the edifice for the opening ceremony.

The LOC scribe said that they had not received any information on the arrival of any state contingent for the Games, noting that it was worrisome.

He also said state officials who were supposed to have arrived for meetings before the Games starts had not come.

“The Games Villages opened on Saturday but as I am talking to you, there is no information on whether any state has arrived.

“But I am very sure that the bulk of them will arrive on Sunday,’’ he said.

Tandoh assured that the LOC was getting things ready for the opening ceremony on Nov. 27 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.

  • IKE SHORUNMU’S BOMBSHELL: Enyeama, Ejide not sure of shirt

IKE SHORUNMU’S BOMBSHELL: Enyeama, Ejide not sure of shirt

Super Eagles’ Assistant Coach, Ike Shorunmu has revealed to SportingLife that he has made up his mind to invite another goalkeeper, whose identity he did not disclose, to join the other two home based goalkeepers, namely Chigozie Agbim and Daniel Akpeyi.

The former Eagles’ first choice in goal lamented that the possibility of the Nigerian Premier League not commencing on time before the December 17th, 2012 camping for the home based Eagles will definitely affect the fitness level and conditioning of the players.

“I doubt if the Nigeria Premier League would kick off before we commence camping for the home boys here in Nigeria in December 17th, which means we have to take these boys again on conditioning and most importantly on fitness level which takes time to reach 100 per cent level. But I am sure the boss will find a away around it. This won’t affect our resolve to do well in South Africa although it could hinder preparations”, Shorunmu disclosed.

“The work load will be too much on Agbim and Akpeyi so we are considering inviting another goalkeeper to compliment the already invited ones in camp. From the trio, we should get what we want and there will be fierce competition to pick the best”, the former Shooting Stars Football Club goaltender summed up.

Shorunmu also stated his wish that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) would extend the January 9th, 2013 deadline given for the submission of the final team list of the Super Eagles and others and most importantly in the interest of Nigeria’s preparations for the competition.

According to him, the deadline will affect the plans of the Chief Coach Stephen Keshi as the team plans to start the first phase of final preparations from December 17th in Nigeria, while the second phase will kick off in Faro, Portugal in January 4th, 2013.

“Honestly speaking, if I have my way I would have wished for a date farther than the January 9th, 2013 deadline. But I am sure my boss (Stephen Keshi) will take care of that since the deadline affects all the participating 16 teams from Africa. The Chief Coach will definitely find a way round the situation in other not to affect our initial plans for the team”, Shorunmu told SportingLife.

  • Team Rivers target 160 gold medals

Team Rivers target 160 gold medals

Defending champions of the National Sports Festival, Team Rivers have been charged to further raise the bar in terms of the most gold medals won in the history of the Games.

Team Rivers set a record at the 17th National Sports Festival hosted by Rivers State with a total haul of 135 gold medals.

However, the chairman of Team Rivers Participation Committee at the 18th National Sports Festival, tagged Eko 2012, Tele Ikuru has charged the state’s contingent to win a minimum of 160 gold medals and further cement her place in the history of the games.

Ikuru, who is also the Deputy Governor of Rivers, gave the charge while addressing the athletes that will represent the state at their University of Port Harcourt camp on the eve of their departure for Lagos.

He said his optimism of targeting a record 160 gold medals is hinged on how the state has prepared well for the Games and the quality of talents available in the team.

According to him, preparations for Eko 2012 started as soon as the last one ended, pointing out that some of the best coaches were employed to train the athletes, in addition to the provision of equipment and strategic camping.

He charged Team Rivers to be prepared “mentally, physically and spiritually” to grab the medals available at the Games, while stressing that to further motivate them, their salaries have been paid till December.

The Deputy Governor reiterated his earlier promise to adequately reward deserving athletes who perform excellently, adding that the state has the “best reward for good performance in the history of the country and will continue to maintain it.

“Go to Lagos and conquer. Conquer and win with a convincing gap. Bring in the gold and get a deluge. Everything that you will need to succeed in Lagos has been provided. Make yourself and Rivers State proud.

“Team Rivers is going to Eko 2012 to win. We are participating to win in Lagos. We have no reason not to conquer,” he stressed.

Also speaking, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Professor Joseph Ajienka, urged Team Rivers not to be complacent with the victory of the 17th edition but to show more zeal as the defending champions and come back with more laurels.

  • Ajilore gets three-minute action

    Ajilore gets three-minute action

Nigerian midfielder Femi Ajilore made a brief appearance for Groningen in their 1-1 draw with Waalwijk in an Eredivisie Round match.

Ajilore, who is believed to be on his way out of the Dutch club, was introduced into the game in the 93rd minute in a tactical move which was to wind down the clock by the visitors.

Ajilore’s team had silenced the home team with a goal by Kwakman in the 43rd minute but Van Peppen’s 78th minute goal for Waalwijk ensured a tense closing period.

Groningen boss was able to wind down the clock by introducing the former Nigeria U20 and U 23 player to the game to reduce the barrage of pressure from the hosts who desperately searched for the winning goal.

Ajilore last played for Nigeria during the reign of Samson Siasia who had Ajilore on his silver medal-winning teams to the FIFA U 20 World Cup in 2005 as well as the final of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

  • Art celebration in freedom park

All aspects of the art were brought alive at the Freedom Park, Lagos, as the 14th Lagos Book and Art Festival (LABAF) was celebrated last weekend.  Edozie Udeze, who attended the shows, reports

Although this year’s Lagos Book and Art Festival (LABAF) has come and gone, the memories will linger on for sometime to come. In its 14th edition, the book festival was established by the Committee for Relevant Art (CORA) in 1999 to ensure that books are made part and parcel of the society. In a society where reading is no longer considered a serious issue, the founders of CORA took it upon themselves to revive the interest of the public in reading and writing.

Coming in a festival form, makes it more interesting for people. This way, a lot of programmes are fused into it to hold the attention of the people. This was why the festival featured a coterie of art events and shows. Ranging from stage theatre to musical performances, the appearances of Nollywood stars to and art exhibitions, the shows pinpointed one fact, that art can be made alive if it is properly packaged for the people.

The Crown Troupe of Africa led by Segun Adefila did not disappoint the audience. With their endless display of stage dramas and stories of life, the Freedom Park arena of the shows was kept alive. For the Crown Troupe artistes, stage is where the fun is. In demonstrating different stages of life on stage, they were able to remind the people that life is a stage where people come to play their part and leave. “It is all about life itself,” Adefila, the founder of the group said.

There were many children in the arena. This year’s theme was concentrated on the kids, who, it was learnt, needed to be exposed to art forms early in life. Their own aspect of the show was termed the Green Festival, with concerted attention being focused on ‘artful’ ways of resolving conflicts – conflicts in homes, in schools and the communities.

This was why the likes of Ali Baba, foremost Nigerian comedian was on hand to teach them how to actualise those dreams of being professional artistes. Also on hand to do her bit was Sola Alamutu who has been a specialist in kids’ literature. “Children need to be taught these things on time,” Alamutu said.

The esplanade wore new and colourful looks. Book stands were filled by people who not only shopped for books but also encountered new and old authors. One of the new authors was Tina Okpara, whose book, My Life Has a Price, spoke volumes about the atrocities people mete out to their wards.

Okpara’s book is a personal memoir on how she was abused by her surrogate parents. At age 5, she had to leave her biological parents to live with her other parents. It was a hellish sojourn from Nigeria to Paris, France. At the end, she became more traumatised than she could ever imagine.

In fact, as Okpara was reading her book, tears began to stream down her face. “It was terrible,” she finally found her voice to say it out. “People my parents trusted to give me the best in life, turned out to be so brutish and merciless,” she squirmed.

Other writers that took time out to share their experiences included Eghosa Imasuen, Akachi Adimora – Ezeigbo, Toni Kan and others. E.C. Osondu’s award-winning book, Voice of America and Bombay by Yewande Omotosho took centre stage in terms of discussion and style of writing. As a matter of fact, the literary session of the festival made it more alive because writers devoted a lot of time discussing the present Nigerian situation. They also harped on the relationship between music and literature.

More importantly, performance poetry occupied the central thinking of the audience. Gradually, that aspect of the art is beginning to appeal to the people. As “the biggest cultural festival on the continent,” like Jahman Anikulapo, chairman of CORA, described it, “it is one of most arduous responsibility for us to rebuild the nation. The nation should be made a pleasant place where things thrive for the good of the citizenry. The art occupies a pivotal place in ensuring a cohesive and comprehensive society.”

This was why visual art was inculcated into the event, using it to reflect on and depict all kinds of textile designs. Children were taken round the exhibitions to see what it takes to create such colourful arts. In the workshops that followed, the children were taught how to make art forms a part of their everyday living.

Some of the visual artists that featured were Sam Ovraiti, Nkechi Nwosu-Igbo, Tola Wewe, Uche James-Iroha and many more. Among the musicians and entertainers were Yinka Davies, Koffi, Princess, Yaw and others.

In the end, the beauty and artistic setting of the Freedom Park put everybody in the mood to savour the freedom there. “But things can only get better if we have more audience attendance and participation,” so said Toyin Akinosho, secretary-general of CORA.

  • 2012/13 SEASON Efugh targets double with Heartland

2012/13 SEASON Efugh targets double with Heartland

SKIPPER Chinedu Efugh has set a target of winning a league and CAF Confederation Cup double with Heartland in the coming year.

Efugh told MTNFootball.com he wishes to lift the Nigeria Premier League championship and the CAF Confederation Cup after he led ‘The Naze Millionaires’ to back-to-back success in the Nigeria Federation Cup in the last two years.

“We will compete for three trophies, the league, the Confederation Cup and the Federation Cup. My target is to win the double, the league and the Confederation Cup. That would be our priorities after we won Federation Cup back to back,” he declared. Heartland crashed out in the qualifying rounds of this year’s Confederation Cup to AC Leopard of Congo, who are in the final of the club competition.

In the coming season, Efugh will reunite with childhood friend and goalkeeper Ebele Obi, who he played alongside at Rangers. “It is good to be together again and we hope to do our best to lift the club,” said the experienced central defender.
