  • Fergie admits Carroll surprise

Sir Alex Ferguson is expecting Andy Carroll to be a handful when Manchester United face West Ham United on Wednesday, and has given his view on the striker’s £35million move to Liverpool.

Carroll was loaned out to the Hammers earlier this season, having joined Liverpool from Newcastle in a big-money deal in January 2011.

Ferguson respects the 23-year-old for his physical qualities but admits he found it surprising that the Reds paid so much for a relatively unproven player.

“He’d played not a lot of games for Newcastle and had to deal with a £35m transfer to a club like Liverpool,” Ferguson said in the Sunday Mirror.

“He was young and it was quite a big jump for him for that kind of money. We’ve gambled on young players in the past, a couple of million, something like that.

“But when you get to that level of £35m, you need to do a bit more homework and see how he is in the second season, maybe.

“Now it’s up to the boy to improve himself. He’s a great header of the ball and very aggressive. He’ll be a handful on Wednesday.”

Ferguson has also suggested that Brendan Rodgers showed his inexperience by letting Carroll link up with West Ham on deadline day before he had signed a replacement.

“They were after Clint Dempsey, that didn’t work out, and they had done the deal for Carroll,” said the Red Devils boss. “Maybe it was something they did not expect.

“With the manager being young, maybe he expected the deal to go through and then it was not there and he had lost a player, too.”

  • Nadal to make Middle East return

Nadal to make Middle East return

Rafael Nadal will put the finishing touches on his Australian Open preparations in the Middle East as he prepares to make his long-awaited return from injury.

The world No. 4 has not played since his shock second-round defeat to Lukas Rosol at Wimbledon in June after struggling to shake off a knee injury.

Nadal will take part in the Mubadala World Tennis Championship – a six-man exhibition event at the end of December, which also features world No. 1 Novak Djokovic and US Open champion Andy Murray – before making his competitive return at the Qatar Open in January.

“Nadal is returning to competitive tennis since his knee injury at Wimbledon so everyone is looking forward to seeing what he brings,” tournament director Karim Alami told Qatari newspaper The Peninsula.

Nadal, who returned to training in Mallorca last week, will be the top seed in Doha. “I am making progress and I hope to continue to do so,” the 11-time grand slam champion said.

  • Casillas: We have taken two steps back

Casillas: We have taken two steps back

Iker Casillas has called upon his Real Madrid team-mates to demonstrate what they can do after slipping to a 1-0 loss Betis on Saturday.

Benat’s 17th-minute goal was enough to separate the two sides as los Merengues crashed to their third defeat of the Liga season..

“It was a blow and we have taken two steps back in the title race,” the 31-year-old told AS.

“[Jose] Mourinho has a temper and sometimes you have to feel more protected by your players. We need to shut up and show that we are angry on the pitch.”

Casillas did, however, claim that there were a number of factors, including the standard of the officiating, that contributed to the result, with Karim Benzema having a seemingly-fair goal ruled out for offside.

“Everything has an influence, such as fatigue, and the fact Betis were thrashed [in a recent 5-1 defeat] by Sevilla. Also, the referee did not make the right decision at times.

“We must continue, work and be more united than ever. Next we play in the Copa del Rey and then Atletico.”

  • Cricket: Pietersen reflects on record-breaking century

Cricket: Pietersen reflects on record-breaking century

Kevin Pietersen reflected on a “satisfying” century but said his 22nd Test hundred would mean a lot more if, as expected, it is part of a famous victory over India.

The most mercurial cricketer of his generation, Pietersen displayed an uncanny mastery of conditions and of world-class opponents to follow his captain Alastair Cook in equalling the all-time England record for Test tons.

There was an understatement in much of what England’s returning hero Pietersen said afterwards, which contrasted with his supreme batsmanship.

“It was a pretty difficult wicket,” he said.

“You knew that at some stage a ball had your name on it, so to have got some (runs) on that was satisfying.”

Pietersen’s performance will inevitably be set in the context of his long summer of contract wrangles, and his “reintegration” as an England cricketer only after a tortuous series of clear-the-air meetings with management and team-mates.

In an environment which prizes the team ethos above all, he was at pains today to stress that his personal glory will count for little without consequent collective success.

“It will mean a lot more if we win tomorrow,” he added.

“Getting hundreds for England, and especially Cookie going to 22 and then saying to me ’you haven’t got far to go, then you’re there as well’ … it was a special moment.

“’Chef’ was magnificent, and it’s a great feeling to be at the top of the list with him.”

England, nine-wicket losers in the first Test, can realistically again contemplate the possibility of series victory.

“We’ve come here to try and win and want to ’front up’ to the challenge,” Pietersen added.

“The captain asked that of us, especially before this second Test match, and some of the guys are really going a long way to win us this one tomorrow.”

Pietersen, who infamously claimed only three months ago that it was “not easy being me” in an apparently dysfunctional England dressing room, is telling a very different tale now.

“The dressing room is absolutely fantastic,” he said.

“We’re sticking together really well, all helping each other out – and not letting things get on top of us.

“If anybody is going through a rough time, everybody else is right behind them. It’s a very united dressing room at the moment, and it will be even more so if we manage to pull off a brilliant victory tomorrow.”

The transformation in Pietersen’s – and England’s – fortunes is hard to credit in the space of a week.

Two fretful innings at the Sardar Patel Stadium amounted to 17 and two, and looked the work of a troubled mind.

Here, he was imperious – just as in Colombo eight months ago and, even amid the disintegration of relations with his employers and colleagues, against South Africa at Headingley in August.

“I wasn’t playing well in Ahmedabad,” said Pietersen.

“I didn’t trust my defence as much as I did coming into this Test match.

“As a batter, if you don’t trust your defence as much you try too many things; you try to force the issue.

“I went and did a lot of hard work, as I always do, and luckily it paid off.”

He discounts the suggestion that he was simply trying too hard in his comeback Test after those fraught months of isolation.

“Not at all, no,” he said.

“I like to keep things simple, but I just didn’t go into that fixture with the right defence.

“I don’t think the preparation leading into the Test match tested me enough.”

Did he ever fear that his international career might be over, when vexed negotiations with England were at their lowest ebb?

An absence of doubt about that would surely not be human; on the other hand, on today’s physical evidence, Pietersen is perhaps just made of different stuff.

Either way, he insists, he does not and will not waste energy about an uncertain future.

“I never know what’s going to happen tomorrow; I don’t take myself that seriously,” he said.

“I do everything on a day-to-day basis. What will be will be.”

    Today, it was magnificent.

  • Gundogan: I should be fit to face Bayern

Gundogan: I should be fit to face Bayern

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is hopeful he will not miss the crucial clash against Bayern Munich next Saturday after picking up an injury in his side’s 2-1 win over Mainz.

The 22-year-old was substituted in the 31st minute after a collision with Nikolce Noveski but although he is likely to miss Tuesday’s clash with Dusseldorf, Gundogan is confident that he will be fit to face the league leaders next weekend.

“Noveski didn’t mean to injure me, it was an unintentional result,” Gundogan told Ruhr News. “At first I thought it would just be sore, but after getting back up and trying to run on it I realised that I would have to come off.

“We don’t know the extent of the damage yet, but I hope that it isn’t that bad. All we can do now is wait until we return to Dortmund.”

Looking ahead to BVB’s upcoming matches, Gundogan said: “Obviously, the match against Bayern Munich [next Saturday] is a highlight, a real showdown, but we must first focus on our game against Dusseldorf on Tuesday.”

Dortmund, who face Dusseldorf in their upcoming match, currently lie second in the Bundesliga table, nine points behind the Bavarians.

  • Jol: We were bullied by Stoke

Chris Hughton feels confidence is soaring at Norwich after claiming another fine result against one of the Premier League’s leading lights.

The Canaries followed up their stunning defeat of Manchester United by snatching a 1-1 draw against high-flying Everton at Goodison Park.

It needed a last-minute equaliser from Sebastien Bassong to secure the point, but Hughton felt his men were good value for a result which extends their unbeaten run in the Premier League to six matches.

Hughton said: “I think there has to be confidence. Any team that is winning games and picking up points – if you can’t gain confidence from that then you never will.

“We have got a hard-working team and have got a lot of quality in the team.

“We know we have to work and put in a real shift to be able to get our points at this level. That is what we have been doing.”

Hughton’s task since taking charge in the summer has been to build on the club’s impressive first season back in the top flight and after a shaky start, no wins in the opening seven games, things are coming right.

The team have not looked back since pulling off a shock win over Arsenal a month ago and the club’s summer signings, not least the impressive Bassong, are finding their feet.

Hughton said: “A group of players have come in that have got to feel their way into a squad.

“The squad we had here was already of good quality and they have mixed in very well. At the moment we have got a nice balance.

“We have had some blips and poor performances along the way, but overall we have been quite happy with the form.”

  • Fernandez: Ibrahimovic bailed out Ancelotti

    Fernandez: Ibrahimovic bailed out Ancelotti

Luis Fernandez believes Carlo Ancelotti’s reign at Paris Saint-Germain would be deemed a failure were it not for Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The capital club regained top spot in Ligue 1 by beating Troyes 4-0 at the Parc des Princes, helped by two goals from their Swedish striker, but Fernandez remains unimpressed by their current boss.

“When the PSG sought Ancelotti, they knew what they were getting,” he explained on his RMC show Luis Attaque.

“Leonardo knows him well because they worked together at AC Milan. So when they recruited him they knew he came with a real resume.

“We judge the coach on performances and results. And so far, we cannot always say that he has been good, very good, excellent or outstanding. The one saving Ancelotti’s neck is Zlatan.

“You cannot say that the team are playing well or are making short work of things. That is not the case.”

Fernandez went on to criticise Ancelotti for failing to find the best system in which to field his players, despite having time to settle into life in Ligue 1.

“He knows the league now. He has an impressive staff behind him. So for now, we’re a little disappointed because he cannot find the right system,” Fernandez continued.

“He only change players that are either out of shape or injured.”

  • Lampard evicts children’s 100-yr-old great-granny from £200-a-week flat

    Lampard evicts children’s 100-yr-old great-granny from £200-a-week flat

Footballer Frank Lampard has launched a legal bid to evict his children’s 100-year-old great-grandmother from her home.

The Chelsea and England midfielder has given Teresa Canete – the grandmother of his former fiancee Elen Rivas – notice that she has just days to move out of a four-bedroom flat in Barcelona that he bought for her in 2008.

A letter, written on headed paper from Spanish law firm Olivella Abogados, was delivered to Ms Canete on November 15.

It reads: ‘Dear Madam, I am sending this present letter on behalf of my client Frank Lampard to inform you that he has the intention of recovering immediately the property he owns and which you currently occupy with no formal rights.

‘For the aforementioned reasons he requires that at the end of 15 days, counting from the present day, 15 November 2012, you proceed to leave the dwelling.

‘Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you require any clarification in respect of this.’

Last night the star and Ms Rivas, the mother of his two young daughters, were at loggerheads over the matter.

The Spanish lingerie model, 37, who was part-raised by her grandmother after her own parents split up, accused Lampard of ‘disgraceful’ behaviour.

In turn, he said Ms Rivas had declined his offers to sell her the property at below market value.

Spanish property records show that the £290,000 flat, on the third floor of an eight-storey block in the city centre, was bought with a £181,000 mortgage in May 2008.

At the time, the Chelsea star was still engaged to Ms Rivas.

The couple ended their seven-year relationship later that year, and the £150,000-a-week star allowed Ms Canete to remain in her home.

Two years later Lampard, who is now engaged to TV presenter Christine Bleakley, 33, announced his intention to put the apartment – which has a rental value of £800 a month – on the market.

It has remained up for sale since then but Lampard now has a prospective buyer.

The news comes less than a week after it was disclosed that Conservative MP and former Minister Peter Luff has been using taxpayers’ money to rent a £1,600-a-month flat in West London from 34-year-old Lampard.

When approached by The Mail on Sunday last night, Ms Rivas said: ‘I can’t believe Frank has threatened to do this.

‘It is disgraceful of him, especially coming so close to Christmas.’

A friend of the model added: ‘Frank virtually earns enough in a week to pay for the cost of this flat outright. Elen feels this action is directed at her rather than being a question of money.

‘She is especially upset because Frank knows how close she is to her grandmother, to the extent that the couple’s eldest daughter, Luna, was born by elective caesarean on Teresa’s birthday – August 22 – so that they could share a birthday.’

But last night a spokesman for Lampard said: ‘Frank offered the flat to Elen at a price below market value and also offered to stand as her guarantor if she needed a mortgage to purchase it, even though she wouldn’t as she has the finances to do it herself.

Even though it’s her relative who has been living there, and that Elen is looking to buy herself a flat in Barcelona, she has declined all offers to take over the property.

‘Frank and Elen have been apart for over four years now and a buyer has been found for the property.

‘It is time Elen took responsibility for her own family.

‘Elen has been asked yet again if she wants the flat but has yet again declined.’

It is understood Ms Rivas pays her grandmother’s bills and living expenses.

The footballer is on the brink of moving back into his lavish home in Chelsea, which now boasts a £500,000 basement pool.

After breaking off her engagement to Lampard, Ms Rivas and her daughters moved into another house in West London, bought by the star.
