Kick It Out: Osaze backs anti-racism campaign

Nigeria’s West Brom star Osaze Odemwingie has vowed to support the Kick It Out campaign against racism despite the doubts of some high-profile stars.

The striker’s comments came as he opened a national exhibition called the Out of Africa Campaign, which debuted at The Public gallery Wednesday night.

Ex-Baggie ace, Jason Roberts and Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand caused controversy by deciding not to wear T-shirts supporting the campaign, saying it has not done enough to tackle racism in football.

Their decisions came after England U21s 1-0 victory against Serbia earlier this month was marred by abuse and violence, including some allegedly directed at England full back Danny Rose, which sparked his eventual sending off.

Odemwingie, West Brom’s top scorer for the past two seasons, however, said he will wear a T-shirt during the away clash against Newcastle United on Sunday.

The Nigerian forward endured racist chants at his former club Lokomotiv Moscow.

He said: “The campaign is doing a good job and this is my way to show my support. I have had my own bad experiences but I’m thankful I don’t feel like a victim everyday.

“Sometimes it hurts me to see bad things happening, but I still want to show my support.”

He would not be drawn on his own opinion of the scenes which dominated the headlines after England’s U21s fixture.

The exhibition pays homage to African stars who have graced the English game, beginning with Ghanaian star Arthur Wharton who plied his trade with Preston North End over 100 years ago and is widely regarded as the first black professional footballer.

The exhibition also has pictures and profiles dedicated to more modern icons including South African Leeds United captain Lucas Radebe, and the stars of today in Emmanuel Adebayor of Togo and Tottenham Hotspur.

Black Country favourites also features DR Congo and Albion star Youssouf Mulumbu, Cameroon and Wolves man George Elokobi who is currently on loan at Bristol City.

    Weng reunites with Plateau Utd

Experienced campaigner, Edward Weng, has returned to the city of Jos where his career started at Mighty Jets to play for rivals, Plateau United.

It’s the second time Weng will play for United in his career.

Weng spent two seasons at El-Kanemi Warriors and helped the team return to the Premier League as well as a place in the last eight in the 2012 Federation Cup.

“I left El-Kanemi as a free agent after helping the team return to the top flight. My decision to play in Jos again is to be close to my family.

“Last season, I almost joined another Jos team, Giwa FC, but decided to remain at El-Kanemi. It’s exciting to play in Jos again,” Weng said to supersport.com.

Weng, who can play as a left-full back and left winger expressed confidence that United will bounce back to reclaim its top flight status.

“I played against Plateau United in the Federation Cup and know the quality of the team. We have the quality to secure a top flight place,” he told supersport.com.

Weng had continental experience at Niger Tornadoes and Kwara United respectively. The winger has also played for Akwa United.

Back in 2000, his pull-out was directed into Rangers’ net by Akin Ademofe to give Tornadoes the former Coca-Cola FA Cup (now Federation Cup) courtesy of an own goal.

AFCON 2013: Odibe calls for team work

Nigeria’s Arsenal Kyiv Central defence ace, Micheal Odibe is confident the Super Eagles will excel at South Africa 2013 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The big defender who is on loan to Dnipropetrovsk from Arsenal Kyiv in the Ukrainian topflight told SportingLife from his base that the Stephen Keshi side will be a delight to watch if Nigeria’s best players are put on parade at Africa’s football fiesta.

“I’m really happy that Nigeria will be among the countries that will be in South Africa after we missed the last edition. It’s a thing of joy for all Nigerians but Keshi should be given a free hand to select players who he feels can make the country proud and should be based on merit and current form and not by God-fatherism,” he warned.

On Nigeria’s chances of qualification from their group C which also have the Stallions of Burkina Faso, Ethiopia and the reigning AFCON champions, Zambia’s Chipolopolo, Odibe said: “Nigeria is a great country and is well known in football, every other African country will be looking at Nigeria in South Africa, but I’m very optimistic that Nigeria will qualify from the group.

Odibe called for the NFF and football administrators to give the Big Boss and the team all the support needed to excel.

“Nigeria has always been a football loving nation, all that needs to be done now is for the NFF to ensure that the players and officials are called to camp on time. We must also give them moral support. If this is done, I expect Nigerians to smile again in 2013.

Lagos-born Odibe, it would be recalled was invited for the Super Eagles friendly against Sierra Leone in February 2011.

  • Reina sets sights on comeback

    Reina sets sights on comeback

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina is full of faith in understudy Brad Jones – but hopes to be back to replace him in the near future.

Reina suffered a minor hamstring injury while on international duty with Spain last week and was not risked against Reading.

Jones impressed in the 1-0 win at Anfield, with two top-class saves denying the Royals an equaliser, but Reina hopes to replace the Australian in goal in Sunday’s Merseyside derby against Everton.

Reina told Liverpool’s official website: “I’m getting better, little by little. It wasn’t worth taking any risks because you risk it getting worse. I’ll be patient and get really good.

“Brad was excellent. He was composed, he was really good in the air, when he was called on he was fast off his line, and he played well with his feet. He had a complete game.

“He’s a good fighter and a good ‘keeper for Liverpool, not just an understudy. He’s another ‘keeper for the club and he’ll do his best to play as many games as possible.”

  • Carroll ‘didn’t get fair chance’

    Carroll ‘didn’t get fair chance’

Andy Carroll believes he wasn’t given a “fair chance” to succeed at Liverpool.

The big striker scored just six Premier League goals for the Reds after joining them from Newcastle in January 2011, and was sent out on loan to West Ham after Brendan Rodgers arrived in the summer.

And he believes that he was not given the opportunity to do his best at Anfield.

“I haven’t really had a fair chance at Liverpool,” Carroll told ESPN. “I was really told that I should move on to keep playing regular football, and obviously then Sam (Allardyce) wanted me here and told me I would be playing regular games.

“So, for me it was a no-brainer coming here and to play.

“Obviously, I didn’t really get a chance there. A new manager came in and I wasn’t part of his plans.

“For me to play football, that was my chance to do that. That is why I am here at Upton Park.

“I think I could fit into every system. I believe in what I can do. Obviously he [Rodgers] has his beliefs and he didn’t think that.

“But for me, obviously, it was better to move on instead of waiting for my chance – which he told me might not come.

“Coming here, I have got a great chance to start games and score goals, which I haven’t really had many of last season.

“I don’t think I have got a point to prove, that is the wrong way to put it. I know what I can do and the ability I have got. I know what I am capable of.

  • UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Ambrose gutted by Barca loss

UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Ambrose gutted by Barca loss

Efe Ambrose has said Celtic were disappointed not to at least get a draw at Barcelona on Tuesday in a UEFA Champions League game.

The visiting Scottish giants took a surprise lead before Barcelona drew level just before half time and then snatched the winner through Jordi Alba deep in stoppage time.

Ambrose, who stood his ground against the Lionel Messi-led Barcelona attack, told MTNFootball.com that his team deserved at least a draw, but maintained the loss will not put them down as they were not disgraced.

“It was a good game that we gave a good account of ourselves. I thank God for that. It was painful that we lost the game and the manner we lost was cruel, but we proved we are no pushovers,” he said.

“The entire team did well and gave our best. We did well to curtail their attackers. I know you want me to talk about Messi, we all did well in the back four to see that he didn’t score. It was not just about me but the defence and the whole team.”

Celtic have a chance to record a famous result when both teams clash again in the reverse fixture on November 7 at Celtic Park.

Barcelona lead the group on nine points, while Celtic remain in second place on four points. Spartak Moscow are third with three points and Benfica are bottom of Group G with a point after three matches.

  • Efe Yarhere tip Rangers to shine

Efe Yarhere tip Rangers to shine

Enugu Rangers midfielder Efe Yarhere believes the Coal-City outfit will fly the country’s flag high in the 2012/13 CAF Champoins League and the Nigeria Premier League (NPL).

The former Warri Wolves midfielder told SportingLife that the Flying Antelopes are eager to excel in Africa’s Premier Club competition.

“We are prepared for the new challenge ahead of next season, the team spirit is high and every player in camp already knows that we will be playing in the continent this season,” he said.

Speaking further, Efe admitted that he is fully committed to the Okey Emordi tutored-side, even as he was quick to add that Rangers will be the team to beat in both the NPL and the CAF Champions League.

“We already know that NPL teams want to defeat Rangers, because it is a club with lots of historical facts and figures in Nigeria.

“However, we are not under pressure to perform because we will treat every game as it comes,” Yahare added.

Enugu Rangers and Kano Pillars will be representing the country in the CAF Champions League in the 2012/13 season. Meanwhile, players of Enugu Rangers are already back in camp ahead of the forthcoming NPL season and will soon heading to Nanka in Anambra state for their pre-season.

2013 African Cup of Nations: Eagles draw Chipolopolo

The ceremony which is a fair draw for the Stephen Keshi side also saw the 16 qualified teams drawn into four groups of four teams.

Group A sees hosts South Africa go up against Angola, Morocco and Cape Verde, a potentially tough run for Bafana Bafana

Ghana’s Black Stars are the top seeds in Group B, and have been drawn alongside Mali, Niger and DR Congo.

While Cote d’Ivoire’s Elephants are in Group D with Tunisia, Algeria and Togo, a possible Group of Death.

  • Can ‘Big Boss’ Keshi deliver AFCON trophy?

Can ‘Big Boss’ Keshi deliver AFCON trophy?

‘Big Boss’ Stephen Keshi has qualified Nigeria to the 2013 AFCON and the next poser is if he could now win the top prize in South Africa, writes Samm Audu.

The Super Eagles have won the Nations Cup twice with the last being 18 years ago when incidentally Keshi was captain of the team.

His contract clearly stipulates a semi-final target at South Africa 2013, but recent noises by top officials including the country’s sports minister suggest they want Nigeria to go all the way and win a third Nations Cup trophy.

After the catastrophic outing by Nigeria at the London Olympics, the country’s top officials are desperate for heroes to show off so as to keep their plum jobs.

As a coach, this will be Keshi’s fifth AFCON having assisted both Jo Bonfrere and Shuaibu Amodu in 2000 and 2002.

On both occasions, Nigeria reached the last four, while he crashed out in the first round with Togo and Mali at the 2006 and 2010 tournaments, respectively.

For many, Nigeria remain one of the biggest underachievers in African football despite the huge promise they have shown for many years.

German coach Berti Vogts guided the Eagles to the 2008 Nations Cup and after their laboured flight was cut short by the host country Ghana in the quarterfinal, he lost his job.

Against most odds, Nigeria placed third at Angola 2010 and coach Amodu was then shown the exit door as the 2010 World Cup fever caught up with everyone in the country.

Preparation for the forthcoming AFCON will be crucial to how far Keshi could go in South Africa.

The Eagles will play a friendly on November 14 in Miami against Venezuela, a decent South American side, while a two-week training stint in Europe for the players in the domestic league is also on the cards.

Depending on where the team will be based for the first round of the tournament, Nigeria also plan to set up a training site in Zimbabwe or Mozambique, going by the proposal before the NFF.

The NFF have done well to prepare the various national teams adequately for major competitions and so the build-up to the 19th Nations Cup is not expected to be any different.

The AFCON will afford Keshi at least two weeks to work with his best players. This is something of a luxury when the longest time he has had with his players from Europe has been a week to a major qualifier.

And the team will be better for it if they then reach at least the last four in South Africa as they would have stayed together as a team for an additional three weeks.

This can only stand the Eagles in good stead for their 2014 World Cup qualifier at home against a re-energised Harambee Stars of Kenya.

Keshi must be clear on how he wants to go about his toughest coaching test yet.

Will he go with committed but not very experienced players from the NPL or will he give another chance for the Europe-based stars to prove they are ready to put their body on the line for Nigeria as they did against Liberia?

Despite the flattering 6-1 home win over Liberia recently, the Eagles still remain very much a work in progress.

The defence, especially at right back and in the centre, is vulnerable, while Keshi’s Eagles are still in dire need of a creative central midfielder in the mould of the great Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha.

Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi is not this player. He has already been tried out in this role with very little success.

Nosa Igiebor is too attack-minded to assert himself in midfield, but the versatile Fengor Ogude and Raheem Lawal may well be the missing link.

Lawal has finally sorted out his club problems, while Ogude is fit again and could shine in the role to dictate the game from midfield if given the confidence to do so.

Another cause for concern is that the Eagles are still not playing as a team and have relied mainly on individual brilliance to get by. This is an age-long problem.

The time these players have played for each other, Nigeria won the 1994 Nations, qualified for the 1994 World Cup and clinched an historic Olympic Gold in 1996.

This is a coaching problem and if Keshi can fix it in South Africa, Nigeria’s long-suffering fans could well have yet another reason to maintain that the team would have won this same competition in 1996 but for a senseless boycott.
