  • Azarenka amazed at career turn-around

    Azarenka amazed at career turn-around

Even though world number one Victoria Azarenka is this week on the brink of one of her finest achievements, she admits that she looks back with amazement at the day when she nearly gave it all away.

The 23-year-old from Belarus needs only two wins at the WTA Championships which started Tuesday to become the year-end world number one for the first time, yet she vividly remembers that not long ago her despair had decided her to quit.

“You have a moment when it just clicks and you get a better vision of where you are heading,” Azarenka said of the February day in 2010 when it required her mother and grandmother to persuade her to continue.

“It clicked when I got a real understanding of what I wanted to do and to achieve it and work around it,” added the transformed player who emerged from the emotional crisis to win her first Grand Slam title at the start of 2012, and who has been top of the rankings for most of this year.

“I’m really glad that happened to me, as it helped me to mature. It opened doors and helped me. It happened pretty much on one day.

“I shall have to look it up and check the date, so that if I come to write a book I shall know exactly which day it was that changed me,” she laughed.

Since then Azarenka has not only managed to control her off-court mood swings, her tempestuous on-court temperament, and her variably aggressive game, but has gone some way to changing herself as a person too.

“You gain a few perspectives, and change your vision of things,” she said. “It helps you improve – improve not only as a player but as a personality.

“I am as intense as I ever was, but maybe I manage it better. And now I have a great team around me, which helps me in everything. It took time to have a comfortable bubble around me.”

Azarenka can now afford to lose one of her three round robin matches and still achieve the coveted season-end top spot.

She may need that leeway as she has landed Serena Williams, once again the tour’s hottest player, in her group.

When they last met, in the final of the US Open in New York last month, Azarenka was 5-3 up in the final set before Williams somehow clawed her way back. Azarenka will try to take heart from how close she came.

“I will have to server better when serving for the match, that’s for sure,” she said of the imminent rematch with the American legend she has beaten only once in 11 tries.

“I don’t think we have ever played indoors, so it will be a new occasion. And I will also play a couple of other players too.”

One of those will be Li Na, the first Chinese player either to win a Grand Slam title or to qualify for the WTA Championships.

She and Azarenka stand at four-all in their head-to-head record, but Azarenka has won the last three, including a match at this tournament last year at the same Sinan Erdem arena.

The other is Angelique Kerber, the fast-rising German who is making her debut in this showdown tournament, and whom Azaenka has beaten in both their completed matches.

Brook: I want to retire Amir Khan

HAVING COMFORTABLY won his final world title eliminator on Saturday (October 20), welterweight Kell Brook wants an all-British clash with bitter rival Amir Khan.

Brook, 26, stopped Hector Saldivia in the third round in front of his home crowd at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield and is now the number one contender for the IBF belt.

Saturday’s victory should mean that Brook, nicknamed ‘Special K’, will fight IBF titleholder Devon Alexander early next year.

However, Brook – who has an unbeaten record of 29 wins (19 K.Os) to his name – stated that he has a score to settle with former light-welterweight world champion Khan.

He told Talksport: “It will always be unfinished business [if I don’t face Khan]. With me and him it’s personal and I’m passionate about that fight. I’m passionate about knocking Amir Khan out.

“We were on Ringside the other night and there is something about him which really gets to me. People having been talking about me and him for years and I just want to retire him.”

Brook added: “He’s distasteful with some of the things he says. I just want to take him out. I think it’s going to be a blockbuster for the fans. He only fights in America but I’d love to fight in a big stadium over here. If we can make that happen I’m sure I can take him out.”

  • Imoke charges Eaglets to conquer Guinea

Imoke charges Eaglets to conquer Guinea

Senator Liyel Imoke, the Governor of Cross River State, has charged the Golden Eaglets to go for an outright win when they meet Guinea on Sunday.

The Nigerian youngsters take a 3-0 lead to Conakry for the second leg of their African Under-17 Junior championship qualifier and the governor has enthused that his adopted team has the capability to beat Guinea yet again.

The Governor spoke through the State’s commissioner of sports, Hon. Patrick Ugbe who met the team before their final training session at the U.J Esuene Sports Stadium on Wednesday.

“Once again, I congratulate you for your wonderful performance in your last match against Guinea and you know we are happy to have you with us in Calabar but first and foremost, I bring to you greetings from His Excellency, Governor Liyel Imoke,” Ugbe said. “As you conclude your preparation for the second leg game in Conakry, we are here to bid you farewell and wish you the best of luck.”

He said he was optimistic of the chances of the Golden Eaglets judging by their last performance asking them however, never to be complacent.

“We believe that there is no way Guinea can stop you and you must not allow Guinea to stop you. For us in Calabar, we are expecting your return because we know you still have one more country to play before your qualification for the Under-17 tournament in Morocco,” he said.

“Don’t fear Guinea, just go there with determination and do the country proud as you have been doing since the beginning of your campaign.”

Ugbe further made a clarion call on the players to play for the collective good of the team.

“Lastly, don’t forget to play as a team. There are going to be eleven of you on the field but you can only succeed if you play as a team. Don’t be selfish, play as a team because that is the part to success. We wish you well as you go to Conakry,” he added.

  • Johnson keen to show control

    Johnson keen to show control

MITCHELL Johnson says his days of waywardness are behind him and he is better prepared for Test cricket should he get another chance, but he doubts that opportunity will come against South Africa.

He does not believe he is among selectors’ plans for next month’s series against the world No.1 Proteas, whom he tormented four years ago, but is confident he still has what it takes to succeed at Test level.

Johnson may get a chance to impress national selectors as early as next week playing in an Australia A side to take on the touring South Africans in Sydney, but he is no longer an automatic Test selection.

John Inverarity’s panel, however, has not shut the door on the 30-year-old, who has pocketed 190 Test wickets.

Since breaking down in Johannesburg last November, Johnson has been usurped by Ben Hilfenhaus and Peter Siddle, while gun youngsters James Pattinson, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins have also left him in their wake.

All five quicks, unlike Johnson before his injury, are capable of producing steady spells that allow captain and selector Michael Clarke to confidently set fields and build pressure on opposition batsmen.

But Johnson said although he was once mentally ”a bit all over the place” he now believes he has more control.

”Coming back into it I’ve worked on a few little things technically and mentally. I feel a lot more consistent. I think I’ve shown that in the games that I play, my consistency has improved a lot,” Johnson said in Durban where he is on duty with Indian Premier League franchise Mumbai Indians.

Johnson’s inconsistency was perhaps best displayed in 2009, when he was named player of the year by the International Cricket Council, largely on the strength of his two series against the Proteas. The honour came months after a form slump during the Ashes loss in England.

”Through ’09 when I had a good year I don’t think I really knew why I was bowling so well, now when I’m bowling well I know why it’s happening or if I’m not bowling I know why not,” said Johnson, who has sacrificed some speed for greater accuracy.

  • Kanu applauds President Jonathan

    Kanu applauds President Jonathan

Former Nigeria captain Nwankwo Kanu has praised President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GCFR) for his huge support for and keen personal interest in Monday’s one-day Presidential Retreat on Sports held at the Banquet Hall of the State House, Abuja.

The fleet-footed ace, who is also Nigeria’s Football Ambassador, said:

“I am ultimately impressed by President’s Jonathan’s personal interest in Nigeria sports. He has shown several times that he is a lover of the youth and a lover of sports,” he said.

“Anyone who is a lover of sports is a lover of the youth. And football is the King of sports. The President was very supportive of the idea of the Retreat and committed his time and energy to see to its success. This is no mean feat. I believe the whole country should appreciate His Excellency for this.”

Kanu, who captained the U-23 National Team to win the Olympic gold in Atlanta in 1996 and also won 86 caps for the Nigeria senior team, played in three FIFA World Cup finals – 1998, 2002 and 2010.

He added: “The Retreat was a very useful one. Most of the speakers contributed meaningfully and positively, to enrich a probable roadmap for the sustainable development of our sports.”

  • Hamilton expecting better weekend

Lewis Hamilton is excited at the prospect of competing in India due to the challenges drivers face at the Buddh International Circuit.

This weekend’s Indian Grand Prix will only be the second time the Formula 1 roadshow has travelled to the Buddh International Circuit, but the track has already found its way in the Hamiton’s heart with the McLaren driver likening it to Spa-Francorchamps.

“The circuit, is something of a revelation. Most modern tracks have a very similar feel; you find that the same driving style and rhythm suits them all. But the Buddh International Circuit is different: it has more in common with a great track like Spa than it does with any number of the more modern places we visit,” Hamilton said in a team preview.

“And that’s because it’s got an incredible flow – basically, from Turn Four, a wide-apex right-hander that sweeps downhill, the track is just a series of fast, rolling curves which really allow you to put the car absolutely on the limit.”

Sebastian Vettel took the race victory 12 months ago with Hamilton only seventh, but the former world champion is confident he can improve this time.

“I didn’t have a particularly tidy weekend there last year: but I feel I’ve been driving better than ever recently – even if the results haven’t quite shown it – so I’m headed to India determined for another good result.

  • Glazers won’t cash in on Man Utd

Manchester United’s owners will not sell the club for “many, many years” despite ongoing interest, according to vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

The sell-off of 10% of the Glazers’ shares in the club in the IPO sale in August raised some questions over the American family’s long-term involvement but Woodward said they had no interest in cashing in the rest of their holding.

Woodward admitted though that he could not rule out one of the six Glazer siblings selling their holding at some point in the future.

Woodward said: “There is always interest in this business. It is a phenomenal brand and club, but they are not willing sellers at all, they won’t even engage, they are long-term investors.

“It’s a very popular business that people have interest in. The answer is: ‘not for sale’. I talk to them [the Glazers] every day and the excitement they have in this club is undiminished and I don’t see them selling completely more many, many years.”

Woodward did accept however that one of the Glazers could dispose of their shares at some point.

He added: “They could – they are a family of six siblings and from time to time, seven to 10 years, who knows if one wants to sell a small piece or not.”

Woodward revealed that India and Australia are both on a shortlist of countries for United to tour in the summer.

The club are also to open an office on the east coast of the USA to try to cash in on growing interest in football in North America.

  • Dougie Freedman joins Bolton

    Dougie Freedman joins Bolton

Dougie Freedman has left Crystal Palace and become the new manager of Bolton, the London club have confirmed.

Freedman, 38, was given permission to talk to Wanderers on Monday afternoon after a U-turn from Palace, who had initially refused to allow contact hours earlier.

And Bolton have wasted little time coming to an agreement with the 38-year-old, with Palace breaking the news via an official statement.

“Crystal Palace Football Club can confirm that first-team manager Dougie Freedman has joined Bolton Wanderers,” read the statement on the club’s website.

“The board of the club would like to put on record their thanks to Dougie for all his efforts over the past couple of years and their disappointment over the events of the past few days.

“The search for a replacement starts immediately.

“The team at tonight’s game against Barnsley will be taken by assistant manager Lennie Lawrence and first-team coach Curtis Fleming.”

Freedman succeeds fellow Scot Owen Coyle at the Reebok Stadium after Coyle was sacked on October 9.

Having been unable to keep Bolton in the Barclays Premier League last term, Coyle presided over just three wins from the club’s opening 11 games in all competitions this season.

Caretaker manager Jimmy Phillips duly took charge of Saturday’s 3-2 home win over Bristol City as the Trotters showed spirit to come back from two goals down.

But the rumour mill was already in full swing over the weekend and Bolton chairman Phil Gartside made his move for Freedman on Sunday.

The former Palace striker was named Eagles manager on a permanent basis in January 2011 and led the club to a League Cup semi-final last season.

His credentials have continued to rise this term with Palace currently riding high in fourth place in the npower Championship and on an eight-match unbeaten run, which included a 1-0 win at Bolton on September 29.

Asuquo: Super 4 win ‘ll motivate Nembe City

High-flying Nembe City FC winger, Inyang Asuquo, has expressed delight with the team’s victory over Bayelsa United at the just concluded Super 4 tournament in Abuja.

The ex-Bayelsa United winger told SportingLife that their victory over state rivals and former Nigeria Premier League NPL) champions have proved that their promotion to NPL was no-fluke.

“We were one of the best clubs in the Nigeria National League (NNL) last season, and we proved to Nigerians that we truly deserve our promotion with the Super 4 win. Hopefully, this will motivate us to give more in our debut season in the NPL,” Asuquo said.

The former Unicem Rovers ace who is on the radar of most NPL clubs ahead of next season further disclosed he will remain with ‘new-boys’ for the new campaign.

“In fact, I’m still getting calls from most of the NPL clubs in the country making enquires about my availability, but I decided to stay with Nembe City because I see a future in the club, we will be the unknown team this season in the NPL,” he submitted.

Nembe City FC, it would be recalled, gained promotion to the NPL from the NNL alongside Bayelsa Utd, Nasarrawa United and El- Kanemi Warriors.

Falcons to get $3000 as win-bonuses
