England-based coach set to boss Enyimba

Enyimba will this week announce a new coach likely to be a Nigerian based in England from a short list of three coaches, officials have said.

Former Nigeria coach Austin Eguavoen has thrown in the towel at ‘The People’s Elephant’ and his assistant Abdu Maikaba has moved to champions Kano Pillars.

MTNFootball.com has since scooped that an England-based Nigerian coach, who has played for various top Nigerian clubs, is favoured to get the job of restoring lost glory for the Aba club who for the second straight season will not feature in international football.

“Enyimba will soon name a new coach, three coaches have been short listed and I know that a top Nigerian coach who is based abroad is likely to get the job,” a top source informed MTNFootball.com

“He is the top favourite looking at the CVs. The chairman is in USA, but when he comes, the appointment will be ratified.”

  • Oxlade-Chamberlain out

    Oxlade-Chamberlain out

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will miss Arsenal’s Champions League game with Schalke 04 after picking up a hip injury during the 1-0 loss at Norwich City.

The England midfielder came off the bench in the 65th minute of the defeat at Carrow Road and appeared to get injured almost immediately.

He limped off after just nine minutes on the field to give Gunners boss Arsene Wenger another selection problem ahead of the visit of the Bundesliga club to the Emirates Stadium.

‘It was a kick on his hip. It is not long-term, but he will be out for Wednesday,’ said Wenger.

Oxlade-Chamberlain joins Theo Walcott, Kieran Gibbs, Laurent Koscielny, Abou Diaby, Tomas Rosicky, Wojciech Szczesny and Lukasz Fabianski on the Arsenal injury list.

Despite that, Wenger expects to see a major improvement in his team’s performance level when they face Schalke, after their insipid display in the defeat at Norwich.

‘We have to put that performance behind us and realise that is not good enough,’ he said, after seeing Grant Holt score the only goal of the game.

  • MONTPELLIER COACH TO UTAKA: Up your game

MONTPELLIER COACH TO UTAKA: Up your game

Nigeria international and Montpellier forward John Utaka, and his teammates have been told to double their work rate if the club is to avoid a shameful outing this season. A highly disappointed coach of the side Rene Girard gave the warning following another league defeat Saturday, the fifth in the series of loses so far recorded by the French Ligue 1 champions.

La Paillade were condemned to a fifth league defeat of the season, with the hopes of recording back-to-back titles already teetering on the brink.

Girard lamented the poor display of his team, with goalkeeper Geoffrey Jourdren benched after criticising the coach in the 3-2 defeat to Evian before the international break.

“We were ineffective in defence and in attack, we gave them goals, and it’s a real shame,” Girard was quoted as saying by Ligue1.com.

“It always comes down to the same thing: if you have to score four goals to win a game on the road, it’s always complicated. The result was in keeping with how our season has been going, and there’s not much to say.

“It’s a shame because we put in a lot of effort and we created chances but in the end it came to nothing. There are many reasons that could explain our shakiness but ultimately we didn’t take our chances when we should have.

“We need to work, work, work. There is no other solution. It’s certain that our match against Nice will be very important – and very tough. We’ll need our players to step up and not back down. We need to get going, and soon,” he said

Utaka, who recently returned from injury, saw 36 minutes of action in Saturday’s 2-1 away loss to his former club Rennes, replacing Gaëtan Charbonnier in the 54th minute. Utaka played for Rennes between 2005 and 2007, making 63 appearances and scoring 22 goals.

Montpellier play Olympiakos in the Champions League on Wednesday.

AFCON 2013 TICKET: No tips for Keshi, unless… — Lulu

Former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Sani Lulu Abdullahi has commended Super Eagles Head Coach, Stephen Keshi for qualifying his team for the next edition of the Africa Nations Cup in South Africa.

He however declined to offer tips on what the Eagles should do to excel at the competition. The ex-Glass House chief argued that although he was competent to speak or render advice on the matter, he would not do so because of national interest.

Lulu said: “You know that I have a court case pending in the court bothering on national interest; I have written an open letter to Mr. President and patiently waiting for his response, so, I don’t think I can render any advice whatsoever now, until those issues are finally cleared up.”

The former FCT Director of Sports, who spoke in Gwagwalada Abuja at the weekend where he came to watch his pet team FOSLA Academy forced to a 1-1 draw by the Gwagwalada Youth Academy, said the problem with youth football development in the country has been lack of proper documentation of the players, thereby leading to age falsification.

“What I saw while in office was that there is no control and documentation of players in various Academies in the country.

“What we have done at FOSLA Academy is collect the background information of the players through their birth cerficates, and information retrieved from their parents and their various primary schools. I believe before they finish their secondary education and get to the tertiary level, these boys would have attained the international standard.

“The greatest challenge we would have would be to have the support of the various authorities that are to manage and supervise the boys at that level.”

Lulu said he was motivated into starting the project to ensure that he gave back to society what the society gave him. “I am a citizen of Nigeria and the society has been good to me; and I have realised that. So I feel this is the time for me pay back, and that is exactly what I am doing.

“It is born of the experiences which I have acquired all over the world, and I think the best I have to do is to go back to the grassroots, which is exactly what I am doing. I have seen that it is very problematic to nurture these youths, but I want to continue to give my best to get them to world standard. I have a lot of time now to work with them and fine tune it.

“I am happy that the boys are on the right track and I am sure the future will be better. My dream is to make some of these boys not just the best in Nigeria, but the world. I think with the support of Nigerians, less privileged Nigerians will surely smile.

“As I said, I grew through the grassroots; I have seen it all because I am a product of this level, having played actively, and rendered services as a public servant. I have been so exposed to give my service as communal service, I feel that the option is to get to the grassroots. This programme started over twenty years ago,” he concluded.

The match was a curtain raiser match for the finals of the Gwagwalada League which was won by Real Marshal FC by five goals to three over Babayaro FC.

Alleged NPL fraud: Minister refers case to NFF

The Minister of Sports, Bolaji Abdullahi has referred the Nigeria Premier League (NPL)’s External Auditor’s Report’s case to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to investigate the allegation of corruption levelled against the NPL by the External Auditors.

A release signed by the Special Adviser on Media to the Minister, Julius Ogunro reads: “The attention of the Honourable Minister of Sports and Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi has been drawn to news stories in the Punch newspaper of October 18th and 19th, which dwell on the allegations of corruption against the Board of the Nigeria Premier League.

“As a result of this, the office of the Honourable Minister has been inundated with calls from journalists and sports stakeholders who seek his comments about the allegations against the NPL Board arising from the external auditor’s report.

“While the Hon Minister is embarrassed by the issues raised in the report, he wishes to state that he has referred the matter to the Nigeria Football Federation, being the primary agency responsible for football in Nigeria.

“The Honourable Minister believes the content of the external auditor’s report, without prejudice to the veracity of the allegations made, is inimical to the development of football and sports in general. While the Minister will exercise utmost restraint in interfering in these matters, he will not hesitate to discharge his full responsibilities as the foremost custodian of sports in Nigeria.

“The Honourable Minister wishes to state that the doctrine of non-interference as espoused by the global football governing body, FIFA is primarily to enhance the development of football. However, the kind of issues at stake appears to neither serve the interest of Nigerian football nor that of FIFA.

“Nevertheless, the Honourable Minister believes that all the issues at stake are still allegations until proven otherwise, while trusting that the NFF will ensure that justice is done on these issues and to all concerned”, Ogunro stated on behalf of the Minister.

I made right choice — Obagoal

Levante’s summer signing Obafemi Martins has enjoyed a good start to his career in La Liga, and the attacker has admitted that he made a mistake in moving to Rubin Kazan.

Since his transfer, the powerful forward has netted two goals in three Primera Division games, including scoring the winner against Real Sociedad on his debut.

The former Newcastle man attracted interest from a number of clubs in the last transfer window but Martins was drawn to the Costa Blanca outfit after seeing Cristiano Ronaldo out-sprinted by defender Sergio Ballesteros.

“In a match against Real Madrid, I was amazed to see Cristiano Ronaldo beaten in a sprint by an old man. I asked myself who is he, and how could he run that fast? It turned out it was Bellesteros, who I know well now and is an incredible player to still be playing,” Martins told Marca.

The Nigerian added: “I was attracted to Levante because of their ambition. I’m the first to admit that things didn’t go well for me at Rubin Kazan, but I think I have made the right choice in coming here.”

Esperance qualify for Champions League final

Esperance beat TP Mazembe 1-0 in Tunis on Saturday evening to reach this year’s African Champions League final, MTNFootball.com reports.

The four-time champions struggled in the first half away in Tunisia against Esperance, who had two great attempts before heading into the break scoreless.

The Tunisians made sure of their second successive Champions League final appearance through Mohamed Ben Masour who scored from a tight angle after turning in a Khalil Chemmam free kick.
