MIKEL OBI CONFESSES I WOULD ‘VE BEEN A D.J

SUPER EAGLES midfielder, John Obi Mikel, has opened up on why he decided to launch a music label.

Speaking with journalists at a public function recently, the ex-Lyn-Oslo ace revealed his love from the drums and guiltter .

He said: “Apart from football, music is another thing I had passion for while I was growing up in Jos. I have so much emotional attachment to music. It lifts my soul and makes me happy. The arrival of MMM Records (Matured Money Minds) has gone a long way to show the deep love I have for music.”

Mikel, who claimed the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea last term further noted that if not for the round-leather game, he would have opted for the entertainment industry.

“I want to contribute my little quota to the growth of the music industry in Nigeria. I’m a good song writer and singer. If I wasn’t a footballer, I would have done well as a singer or a disc jockey (DJ)” he added.

    Mata unconcerned by Spain snub

Juan Mata insists he will not let his recent omission from the Spain squad get to him after he came back to haunt Andre Villas-Boas by starring in Chelsea’s 4-2 demolition of Tottenham.

While much of the focus this season has been on new arrivals Oscar and Eden Hazard, it is Mata who has grabbed the headlines of late thanks to a series of stunning displays – the latest of which came at White Hart Lane on Saturday.

With Tottenham 2-1 up, the Spaniard swung the game in Chelsea’s favour by scoring twice in just over two minutes before playing in Daniel Sturridge to seal the Blues’ win in injury-time.

Mata’s brace, which could have easily been converted in to a first Barclays Premier League hat-trick, came two weeks after the midfielder was left out of Spain’s squad to face Belarus and France.

While Vicente Del Bosque has an embarrassment of riches to choose from in midfield, anyone who has seen Mata in action recently must be wondering how on earth the 24-year-old could be overlooked for his national side.

The player himself, however, just wants to concentrate on the task in hand at Chelsea.

“I don’t know (whether anyone was watching from Spain). I just try to improve with every Chelsea game I play,” he said.

“I just wanted to do my best for my team and in this moment I am feeling really well.

“I had another chance for a goal but Fernando (Torres) was in a better position than me to score.

“But the most important thing for me was victory. Before the game we wanted to stay top of the league and we are still there.”

Mata’s performance helped Chelsea strengthen their grip on the Barclays Premier League ahead of next weekend’s meeting with arch rivals Manchester United.

Roberto Di Matteo’s men are four points ahead of the Red Devils and are playing the most attractive football in the country – something which Villas-Boas tried and failed to do during his reign at Stamford Bridge last term.

Yet there are worries that Chelsea’s attacking style can leave them exposed at the back – as was the case on Saturday when William Gallas and Jermain Defoe were allowed to put Spurs 2-1 up after Gary Cahill’s bullet volley opener.

With John Terry banned for the next three domestic games, Chelsea are more vulnerable, but Di Matteo insists he will not change his approach, regardless of the opposition.

  • Adkins shoulders defensive blame

    Adkins shoulders defensive blame

Southampton manager Nigel Adkins has shouldered the blame for the newly-promoted side’s record-breaking poor defence.

Saints ended a seven-year exile from the top flight after automatic promotion from the Championship, but have so far endured a torrid start to life back in the big time.

Saturday’s 4-1 defeat at the hands of fellow new boys West Ham means the south coast side have just four points to show from eight Premier League matches, letting in 24 goals in the process.

No side has ever conceded as many goals at this stage of a Premier League season and Adkins knows things need to change quickly.

“We’ve obviously conceded some poor goals again,” the Southampton manager said.

“We’ll remain positive in what we do. We’ll work hard on the training ground.

“In the first half the players did very well and let’s remember, we defend as a team.

“Let’s not highlight any individuals. It is my responsibility and if anyone wants to point the finger, point it me.

“At the end of the day, we defend as a team and we attack as a team and that is the important thing.”

Southampton’s team selections this season have at times raised a few eyebrows and Saturday’s decision to start with top scorer Rickie Lambert on the bench confused many.

“I thought Jay Rodriguez did very well in the first half,” Adkins said in defence of the team selection.

“We’ve got Jay Rodriguez, Emmanuel Mayuka, Rickie Lambert – we’ve got several players at the football club.

“Me as manager, it is my responsibility to pick from the group of players I have to select from.

“Everyone will have a different opinion, everyone will pick a different team.

“Whether I start Rickie Lambert, whether I bring Rickie Lambert on, whatever team is selected, there will always be a decision made about it.

“Ultimately, it is my decision as the manager to pick the team and the buck stops with me.”

While the pressure mounts on Adkins and his side, things for Saturday’s opponents West Ham look far rosier.

  • Watson admits she was spurred on to win Japan Open

Watson admits she was spurred on to win Japan Open

Heather Watson admits that being overlooked by Andy Murray in favour of Laura Robson at the Olympics this summer helped her become the first British woman to win a WTA Tour title for 24 years.

Watson’s friendly disposition masks a ruthless streak. And while her friendship with Robson has survived the frustration of not playing in the mixed doubles at the Olympics, in spite of having a higher doubles ranking, Watson used the experience to harden her.

‘I wanted to play, it was the Olympics,’ said Watson, whose triumph last weekend in the WTA tournament in Osaka, Japan, delivered British tennis another success story five weeks after Murray won the US Open championship.

‘I think anyone in that position would have wanted that opportunity. But it was Andy’s decision and he and Laura ended up winning a silver medal, and that was brilliant for the country.

‘I was disappointed but it has made me stronger as a person, it’s made me push harder.’

In Murray’s defence, he was placed in an invidious position at the Olympics at Wimbledon.

Both women had a case to be co-opted by Murray; but his choice was coloured by the fact he had enjoyed a winning partnership with Robson in an Australian exhibition tournament.

At 20, Watson has risen this week to No 50 in the world, two places above Robson, who is two years younger.

Watson said: ‘Off the court we are good friends but when it comes to the crunch, we are competitive. We are not going to be friends when we’re playing. This is our job. At tournaments Laura will be with her team and I’ll be with mine.’

Last month Robson missed her own chance to win a WTA title, when she was narrowly defeated by Su-Wei Hsieh in a final in Guangzhou, China.

‘Knowing Laura got to a WTA final and didn’t win, as soon as I got to that final I wanted to win so badly,’ said Watson, who is having some rare time with parents Michelle and Ian at home in Guernsey.

‘I always look to see how Laura is doing and she has been stronger since the Olympics, too. If she does well, I want to do better. It’s very good that we push each other along.’

  • Apam fancies Eagles return soon

    Apam fancies Eagles return soon

RENNES defender Onyekachi Apam has restated his wish to return to the Super Eagles soon after a two-year absence.

Apam, who was out of action for more than a year and a half due to injury, has since become a regular fixture for his French Ligue 1 side and he believes he will soon be handed another chance with Nigeria national team.

“I wish to play for the Eagles again, I can’t decide on when that would be, but I am ready,” he said in an interview monitored on Monday.

“Coach Amokachi has always been in touch with me to know how I am doing here.

“And I am happy that we have now booked our place at the next Nations Cup, even though I didn’t expect such a big win against Liberia but the team did well.” Apam was in full-game action against Motpellier at the weekend. Rennes beat the French champions 2-1.

He featured for Nigeria at both the 2008 and 2010 Africa Cup of Nations, but a nagging knee injury knocked him out of the country’s final squad to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The former Enugu Rangers central defender has also been capped at U-20 and Olympic levels.

  • EAGLES PLAN BIG FEAT FOR SOUTH AFRICA

EAGLES PLAN BIG FEAT FOR SOUTH AFRICA

THE NIGERIA Football Federation (NFF) will ‘leave no stone unturned’ in its bid to see Nigeria crowned champions at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

Nigeria missed out on the 2012 edition of the competition in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea but will made a return to the 3013 edition in South Africa following an 8-3 aggregate success against Liberia’s Lone Star in the final round of qualifying.

The NFF through its technical committee chairman, Chris Green said the manner in which the Super Eagles qualified for the 2013 AFCON should be a pointer as regards the side’s intent at the tournament which begins on January 13.

“For all the teams that have qualified, the feelings (after qualifying for the finals) is like winning the tournament. That’s how competitive football in the continent is right now and we are pleased Nigeria qualified in grand style. Now that we have qualified, we will leave no stone unturned in our bid to win the title,” Green told supersport.com.

The football chief then took the time to outline the plans and programmes for the Federation for the Super Eagles to keep the team in top shape for the 2013 AFCON.

“We have had our plans right from the earliest stages of the qualification matches. The programmes we have will culminate at the end of the tournament in South Africa.

“Like we did with our age grade teams in the male and female cadres, we have always advocated and prosecuted long-term camping and this will be no different. This is to ensure that they get the required exposure and give the coaches ample time to see that the team blends effectively,” he said.

The first phase of camping will commence with home- based players while foreign pros will join the squad later on. The team will camp in Zimbabwe.

“The first phase of camping will last for three weeks. For the first one week, twenty one locally-based players will be expected in camp. It will be intense and the players will assess the players.

“There will be a lot of friendly matches played during the period. The first will be played in Miami, USA against the Venezuela. Like I said we have always had a programme for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa and we will stick to it assiduously,” he said.

Nigeria have won the AFCON twice, first in 1980 as hosts and then in 1994 when the competition was held in Tunisia.

  • Ronaldinho helped me a lot

    Ronaldinho helped me a lot

Atlético Minerio star Bernard has praised the role Ronaldinho has played in his development this year and revealed that it is a ‘joy’ to play with the former Barcelona legend.

Bernard, 20, has been one of the breakthrough stars of this year’s Brasileirão and looks destined for a big future in the game. However, in an interview with Lancenet on Sunday, the playmaker spoke of his admiration for his teammate.

He said: “He has helped me a lot, talked to me and asked to me to have joy in time to play football.

He has great handling of the ball, speed and better touch. Whether in practice or in the game, I try to observe everything he does. Ronaldinho has been instrumental in my growth.”

The youngster also gave an insight into his life off this pitch and showed that he has his feet firmly on the ground.

He said: “I learned from a child to be humble and have a level head. My father lived on the farm and struggled to grow in life. I follow this example and try to be focused on football rather than to earn as much money as possible. I was always on my own, quietly. I have sensational girlfriend and a family, so I prefer to stay home and enjoy it all.”

  • RVP hails Rooney partnership

    RVP hails Rooney partnership

Robin van Persie’s partnership with Wayne Rooney at Manchester United is turning into the perfect combination.

A combination of Van Persie’s lack of pre-season training and Rooney’s gashed thigh meant the pair did not start in the same team together until the Champions League trip to Cluj.

Even then Rooney was in a deep-lying midfield role, as he was at Newcastle six days later.

Something must have been going right though because United won both games, and they maintained that sequence at Old Trafford on Saturday when Rooney was pushed further forward against Stoke.

Even better as far as Sir Alex Ferguson is concerned, Rooney and Van Persie both found the net.

That the pair were also responsible for three of the four assists just proves what potential there is from United’s new strike force.

“We are definitely getting more of an understanding,” Van Persie said.

“We like to play together and work well together.

“It is only the second or third time we have played in this formation but offensively and defensively, we help each other out.”

The ability of both players to operate as the spearhead of United’s attack, or drop deep, or push out wide, provides a conundrum it will be difficult for any defence to solve.

Danny Welbeck is also capable of making a significant contribution and with Javier Hernandez, Nani, Shinji Kagawa and Ashley Young also offering a threat, it is little wonder Ferguson currently views attack as the best form of defence.

“We do look exciting going forward,” added the Dutchman.

“We can score all sorts of goals from many different angles.

“That is a good sign and should be a real weapon for us as the season goes on.”

If that is true, then concerns about the defensive side of United’s game are also valid.

The return of Chris Smalling clearly cannot come quickly enough to take some pressure off Jonny Evans and Rio Ferdinand, whose status at United is open to question following Saturday’s refusal to wear a t-shirt highlighting Kick It Out’s anti-racism campaign.

It had been anticipated Smalling would be available to face Stoke, only for Ferguson to reveal on Friday the former Fulham man still was not quite right after recovering from a broken metatarsal.

However, with Tuesday’s tricky Champions League encounter with Braga being followed by two games at Chelsea, one against Arsenal before the European return with the progressive Portuguese outfit, Smalling’s presence is required as United look for some solidity.

Rooney’s own goal, the prelude to him reaching 200 club goals in the right net, meant United have now fallen behind in seven of their 11 matches so far this season.

It is a run that has already cost them valuable points against Everton and Tottenham this term, and if it continues over the next fortnight, could have a significant impact on this season’s trophy quest.

“It has happened too often,” said Van Persie.

“We have to work on it because we can only do better.”

Kagawa, Tom Cleverley and Ryan Giggs are among those who are pencilled in to face Braga, while a change in goal is also anticipated given Ferguson’s recent policy of rotating David de Gea and Anders Lindegaard.

    Dzeko unhappy with super-sub tag

Edin Dzeko does not want to be known as Manchester City’s super-sub – and first team coach David Platt insists the striker will get his fair share of starts for the Barclays Premier League champions.

Edin Dzeko does not want to be known as Manchester City’s super-sub – and first team coach David Platt insists the striker will get his fair share of starts for the Barclays Premier League champions.

Dzeko is City’s leading scorer with six goals this season but four of those goals have come from the bench including two in Saturdday’s 2-1 win at West Brom.

The Bosnia international was introduced with 11 minutes remaining and within 60 seconds had equalised before converting an injury-time pass from Sergio Aguero for the winner.

Platt confirmed Dzeko’s match-changing contribution had put him in contention to start Wednesday’s Champions League encounter with Ajax.

Dzeko, who also scored the winner at Fulham as a substitute, said: “The manager (Roberto Mancini) is there to pick the team and I’m there when the team needs me.

“But I was never a super-sub even before I came to Manchester City.

“I always used to play from the beginning (for Wolfsburg) and I scored a lot of goals – not as a sub.

“In the last few games the situation has been like this and I’m just happy to be scoring goals.

“But I will never be a super-sub, I want to play.”

Platt said: “Edin won’t have that tag (super-sub) either because he will get his starts like every other player will get their starts.

“We’ve got 24 players, four of them are on the treatment table, so we had a squad of 20 to pick from.

“Edin came on and got his two goals and has put himself firmly in the manager’s thoughts for Wednesday night (against Ajax).

“But we will pick a team on what we think is right for Ajax and the one after that.”

Platt was pleased with the reaction of Dzeko to not starting the game.

He said: “Edin has been in superb form, not just goalscoring wise, and towards the end of last season he was coming off the bench and doing well.

“But when he has started he has done very well, as well. He is a top, top player.

“People should be disappointed when they are not in the team but the reaction you want when they come on is that they fight for their team and they have all done well.”

City defender Joleon Lescott continued his boycott of Kick It Out at The Hawthorns by not wearing the T-shirt although his club’s official day in support of the campaign takes place at home to Swansea next weekend.

  • Presidential sport retreat: NFF is corrupt – Gov . Amaechi

Presidential sport retreat: NFF is corrupt – Gov . Amaechi

THE Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has been labelled as the most corrupt institution in the country.

This was the verdict of Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, who also called for the immediately dissolution of the board.

The dissolution, the governor argued, was the key to Nigeria regaining its lost glory in football.

NFF is currently being led by Alhaji Aminu Maigari.

He spoke at the Presidential Sports Retreat with the theme: “Harnessing the Potential of Nigeria’s Sports Sector: From Playground to Podium.”

Speaking on the topic, “State government and sports development” Ameachi said it was the high level of corruption in the football house that discouraged most governors from funding sports in the country.

Ameachi who was articulating the position of the governors said the enormous corruption in the board prompted the then members of the Presidential Task Force in which he chaired, to recommend the dissolution of NFF and damn the consequence of the Federation of International Football Association banning the country for two years.

He said: “We recommended that to stop FIFA from banning we should withdraw from international competition for two years. Let us come back home and start afresh. We will perform better later. Today what you have is an NFF that is corrupt.”

He said what was sustainable was for the country to revive primary school sports and for the country to train qualified coaches if it wants to see result.

Ameachi revealed that the presidential task force also recommended a total overhaul of the coaching crew in football. “We said that clearly the present coaching crew do not have what it takes to coach. We said they should be sent abroad for training while we hire a foreign coach to handle our team for a while just like Westerhof did.”

Amaechi also listed bad implementation of policies as part of the country’s problem.

“Part of the problem is the implementation. Mr. President you must insist on implementation else we will gather gain in 2015 to discuss sports,” he said.

The governor further said he knew that State governors are capable of funding sporting activities if there was transparency.

He said it was not right that public fund should be mismanaged as currently being done by some sports administrators.

“Those who administer public institutions should do so judiciously and transparently,” he posited.
