MY BEAUTY REGIMEN: I like home spa treats

Millicent Arebun Onuoha is the founder and Creative Director of Millare Fashion Ltd. Her label prides itself on using ecofriendly fabrics. In this encounter with Yetunde Oladeinde, she talks about her beauty routine and the things that make her tick.

First you want to know the secret of looking good.

“More credit lies with the genes God blessed  me with and the fact that I consciously try to take care of it as best as I can by eating healthy and sticking to a basic skincare routine . I say BASIC, because I am a very lazy skincare person and can stick to a product that works for me for a lifetime”.

Also there is no adventurous skincare buying for her. “I am very hard to convince when it comes to trying on a new skincare product or routine. Until what I am using isn’t producing the needed results I don’t buy any new brand. Whenever the inevitable occurs and I have to upgrade or change my skincare products, it’s always an uphill task especially for my facial skin products so I try as much possible to postpone the stress for as long as possible”.

She therefore visits commercial spas at most thrice a year simply for the deluxe experience and as a self-care treat. “I am more into DIY home spa treats because I believe more in organic treatments than products that may or may not contain chemicals that may or may not be good for my skin and health in the long or short run. Moreover, considering the regularity of the spa treatments I indulge in, the DIY home spa is definitely more budgeting friendly for me. I mean, to get a decent facial and massage in Lagos today isn’t cheap. DIY spa treatments at home also saves me time as I can be done with my facials with a simple beauty sheet mask or fruits and oil combo paste in a matter of minutes. Still if you have the funds and time needed, visit to the Spa, to be pampered and primped by others is a treat everyone deserves as often as humanly possible. Your skin and emotions will thank you for it “.

Millicent’s go-to, for pampering her skin is moisturising and exfoliating using Karay cosmetics skin combo or The Ordinary peeling 10mins exfoliating Facials. “To prep my facial skin I use Collagen by Watsonville facial mask or Bisutang Rice Nourishing Mask. Both works wonders for my facial skin. If I am not tired by the time am done, I follow up with Vitamin C syrup by Indigo Glow cosmetics and voilà! I don’t do this every day though; this “long” process for me is biweekly if the spirit is willing because the flesh is often not”.

Diet “I don’t eat sugar even in my tea and I don’t like minerals (coke, Fanta etc) or malts. Thankfully I am not a cookie and sweets fan so it’s easy for me to avoid those as I have almost zero interest in them. I also have little or no interest in fast foods (except am ravenous) and junk food like the famous Gala, burgers, bread, hotdogs etc. I prefer home cooked or freshly cooked meals that are as near as possible to how God Intended it to be “.

She continued: “To be candid I eat a lot! I mean a lot!!  Besides I love looking good, it makes me feel great and adds extra bounce to my steps; anything that interfere with my “Joy” is given zero attention”.

Fashion to her is therefore an expression of one’s individuality, value system and culture. “There is very little that fashion can make anyone do, because an individual’s choice of fashion or attire is a reflection of their current state of mind .That been said , it is very relevant to mention that people also forget that fashion is an embodiment or catalogue of a  society’s prevailing value system, political landscape, culture and norms. In today’s global village, fashion has become a mesh of different social-cultural, religious and political ideologies which can sometimes be confusing or misleading to the budding fashionista”.

Personally, she draws the line at outfits that leaves extremely little to the imagination or leaves her precious butt cheeks at the mercy of the winds and lascivious minds. “This choice is simply an extension of my personal value system, which brings me back full circle to my earlier definition of fashion. Fashion is indeed an outlet. For those who haven’t yet discovered their personal identity or core values, fashion can become a minefield”.

Also, she does not like or indulge in full coverage makeup. “So except it is for a very serious wedding of a loved one or is receiving an award I make do with simple eye & brow pencil, my extension lashes and my signature red lipstick. That is it! No foundation, no powder no concealer or anything else. This is me at least 360 days in a year which is why I suppose I have great skin. I retain the services of makeup artist only when the situation demands. So far my best experience with makeup artists has been with @Bare2Beauty and @HouseofYinkus. My favourite beauty products are from Zaroncosmetics and Mac”.

For Millicent exercise routine consists of taking long walks on the streets or on the treadmill in her home gym in a bid to meet the daily target of 7000 steps. “On an average I meet my target 22days out of 30 in a month.

What is the secret of looking good you ask and Nnena replied: “My own secret of looking good is simple; don’t ever go to bed with make-up. Use your body scrub at least twice weekly and invest in yourself. Most women don’t see this as important. They would be wondering why others look better than them but they have refused to invest in themselves.”

She continued: “They have refused to buy quality products to look good. Also try as much as possible to drink a lot of water. Many of us still do not know the importance of water in our system.  Above all, use your skin care routine judiciously”.

Making use of the Spa she added has come with many benefits. “I visit the Spa regularly. I own one so I know its importance. The advantages of having spa treatment are many. Aside warding off toxins and opening up the skin’s pores, it helps to burn calories. It breaks down fatty deposits and many more”.

I  believe that more things can be done in Nigeria to assist and help upcoming musicicians”.

She opined that: “The difference is that in the UK there’s more resources to help upcoming artists than there is in Nigeria. Nigeria is the top country for afrobeat artists right now but if they had more resources there will be more artists coming out of Nigeria”.

She added:  “I  am here to push my music and make  the necessary connections. I didn’t allow coronavirus to stop me from executing my plans. I love Nigeria and the treatment I have been receiving. I’m feeling like a princess here and it’s definitely a country I’ll be visiting often. I’m also enjoying the food and exploring Nigeria as a whole.

  • Your virginity mustn’t be for sale!

Your virginity mustn’t be for sale!

    By Temilolu Okeowo

DEAR Mummy Temilolu, You’ve made so much impact in my life since I stumbled on your articles. I was also a virgin until I got into the university and I lost it to a liar! Mummy, please don’t stop telling us the truth about virginity! The guy that deflowered me is married now with kids, but I’m still single. He came to me after he got married saying he’s not happy in his marriage and that he wants us to have a nice time together with a lot of gifts for me but this I turned him down! Even before I saw your posts, I’ve been keeping myself. Thank you ma for telling us the truth some of our parents won’t tell us believing we are grown up enough to be giving them money they don’t even know its source. Thank you so much ma.

    Abosede

    Dear Aunty Temilolu,

I am 27 years old, an HND holder and still a virgin but my life is nothing to write home about. I have had only one boyfriend in my life and he insults me that I have no vision as he has a better life than I.

Please ma, write an article on innocent girls who had a poor upbringing and don’t know what to do with their lives. How they can get help to get well-trained to attract the right suitors.

    Funmilola Adeojo

My darling angelic Funmilola and other wonderfully-wonderful girls who have chosen to fear God rather than please their flesh and the world.

Read Also: Your virginity is not for sale, it can give you the world!

I couldn’t help but shake my head as I read your message Funmilola. How can a human-being make you feel so unworthy? You an uncommon and most priceless jewel, fantastically-blessed amongst women! How come you don’t even recognise who you are and what you carry? The fact that you can even brood over someone who doesn’t think much of you is cringe-worthy? I’m sorry but I have to ask- “who is he by the way and by the bush?” Any carnal-minded person reading would say I’m over-flogging sexual purity! Hmm…what a world! If only the average human knew the risk and ridicule they subject themselves to opening up and sharing their lives “anyhow”…but sadly, the devil, the headmaster of the world has gotten into their heads-mind and soul! May God illuminate the heart of someone reading but whether that happens or not, I won’t stop preaching this and saving as many girls as possible from peril and arming them against a satanically-patriarchal society!

Funmilola, may God forgive you for saying your life is nothing to write home about! Before biblical Mary’s conception, was she ever known? She was just a simple girl bethrothed to a carpenter! What about Esther before she became a queen? She was an orphan and the only relative she had was an uncle whom the bible recorded always sat at the gate. Yet, God found them worthy to be used by Him and transformed their lives beyond human comprehension! I bet your life isn’t as low as theirs was before their eternal fame! Now tell me, if you believe in God and He has been there for you over the years, is there anything God won’t do for you for choosing to obey Him? I repeat- may God forgive you for saying your life is nothing to write home about!

Whaaaaaat??? With all the power and glory you carry? May your ignorance and spiritual dullness not kick you out of God’s incredibly-grand design for your life! Before I write on your request, please detach yourself from that boyfriend of yours immediately and get ready for the best days of your life! I shall address your request in my next article. May God show you a sample of the rewards of obedience and let it manifest in your life before then in Jesus name!

    Let me add this-

For every favour/gift you lost because you won’t give sex- mark my words- God will give you unbelievable spiritual gifts and inexhaustible wealth!

Some ladies will be jilted this year because upon spiritual enquiry, their suitors would discover they’ve been emptied of their goodness/virtues. May such never happen to you! Stay chaste!

    By Temilolu Okeowo

Dear Madam Temilolu, I always smile anytime I read through your write-ups because I’ve been on the road of sex outside marriage before and there was actually no pleasant change in my life until I made a vow to stay chaste until my bride price is paid! I’m no longer a virgin and I’m a single mother but guess what ma? It doesn’t stop me from keeping to my decision and manifesting my God-given potentials. I can boldly say God has been so faithful to me ever since I took that decision. Thank you ma because I know and understand the mystery you are trying to make girls see. May God bless you real good! A woman is actually a spiritual house and the earlier the girls are made to realise this, the better. I hope the girls you write for will understand this before they have fatal accidents in their life’s journey which could derail their destinies. I thank God I discovered this on time and I must say life is a lot better for me.

    Dear Aunty Temilolu,

I am among the luckiest girls to have an encounter with you. Thanks so much ma for teaching millions of girls the way to a greater and promising future. Your column in the newspaper and on Facebook made me discover myself. It’s like a shining light in my path leading me to a perfect destination as I’m still a virgin at 26. God bless you ma!

    Dear Sis. Temilolu,

I’m a secondary virgin. If I had known, I wouldn’t even have gotten deflowered and I regret not being a virgin. We didn’t have a close-knit relationship with our mum. When I was a teenager, I was molested and I can’t forget the person till date. I have abstained from sexual intercourse since and I have had to decline job offers because I refuse to sleep with my potential employers. Right now, I have no job but I know God Almighty will make a way for me. Thanks for your encouraging words always. It has helped me a lot. God bless you ma!

    Dear Mummy Temilolu,

Thanks for your inspirational articles on the importance of preserving one’s virginity till marriage! However, I have a question for you! What happens to a girl who has no financial support from home because of her father’s demise and her mother can barely afford to get enough to feed and then a guy promises to help pay her school fees and provide other necessities- can a virgin-girl date him?

    Busayo

My dearest Busayo and other Nigerian girls,

I would be very correct to say Busayo is experiencing what an average Nigerian girl is experiencing today and my worry is it’s just going to get worse because of the bad economy-a major reason why intending parents MUST plan well before they bring children into the world! It would only take fierce determination and being possessed by the spirit of God not to practically “sell yourself” to even have enough food to eat and clothes to wear, least of all have a man who will be there for you always- not even at a time when females are competing for the attention of men and giving them cheap access to their bodies! But you know what? It’s the wrongest and most destructive way to go! Not only are you giving the devil the reins of your life, you will also be disrespecting the temple of the Holy Spirit- the powerhouse of God. Whose support does your entire existence on earth need to start with, if not the power of God? Or don’t you know premarital sex is defiling the temple of the Holy Spirit? This guy will sweep you off your feet, take care of you like no man’s business to start with and in fact, you’d be the one chasing him to sleep with you! Who knows if he just wants to have a taste of what no man has touched and then dump you? I don’t know how I want to teach you to delay gratification as it would take some personal conviction for you to believe me when I tell you what you want right now can be delayed for far better opportunities to come without trouble. But for a virgin-girl to get into a romantic relationship with a man because he promised to see her through school etc- you might as well be preparing yourself for a journey that may appear to be “heaven on earth” at first but land you inside “hell on earth.”
