‘It’s wrong to say gospel music is an easier genre’

Known simply as Mista Olamilekan, Temitope O. Olamilekan is a gospel artiste that is fast creating a name for himself with his brand of music, which he says is aimed at impacting life, entertaining and bringing people to the realisation of the kingdom of God. Recently offered a slot on the 2024 TOCSS Foundation International USA ‘Artist In Residence (Films and Music Category), Olamilekan shared his feeling with Gboyega Alaka.

A number of people are of the opinion that gospel music is an easier genre of music to delve into because the resources are very much available – such as the bible, the numerous Christian hymns and even old songs that can be remixed to sound anew. What would you say to this?

It is not anybody that sings gospel that ministers. There is a difference between singing for singing sake and ministering to impact and win souls. Ministering has to do with a personal encounter and relationship with God and the Holy Spirit. So it doesn’t just come easy like that. So, no, it’s not an easier genre.  there are preparations for you as a gospel singer to journey well. Else you’re just an ordinary entertainer.

You’ve been quoted as saying you enjoy using music to bless souls, for humanitarian service and for public good. How do you mean?

Well, music is medicine on its own. The kind of music I do is to bring people to the realisation of the kingdom of God and to entertain. Christianity is not boring and it is my own way of saying you can find whatever you want, even more in the fold of Christ. I love to impact people and make them realise that in gospel music there is entertainment, there is encouragement, there is bringing us back to order in case you’re backsliding. It is divinely received.

Have you always been an independent musician or you started with a group?

I started in 2005 as a church chorister; then in 2018, I joined a renowned gospel artist Bidemi Olaopa. I was with him till 2003 and we were going from churches to churches, evangelising through our music.

Let’s look at your journey so far; do you have any album yet?

I have several singles including ‘The Lord is my Shepherd’, it’s a highlife kind of music. After that I had ‘Let us pray,’ it’s a prayer in Yoruba, and that’s because I realised that most Christians are lazy when it comes to praying. Then I had ‘Spiritual Ginger,’ ‘Resurrection Praise;’ it was released last Easter to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus. I have also had several collaborations, including one with Press Play a producer and singer in Meta meta; one with Ayanfe Classic in ‘Blood of Jesus,’ and another with Olusayo Orodele in ‘Under my feet’.

You have been offered a slot on the 2024 TOCSS Foundation International USA ‘Artist In Residence (Films and Music Category), what does this mean to you?

I am indeed grateful to God for this opportunity and mostly elated about the platform. I plan to accept this offer because I am confident that I have something valuable to share on this platform and this is indeed a blessing from God to share it with the world.

The TOCSS Foundation Artist In Residence Programme is a tool for learning and development, mentoring and coaching, and community service; how might you contribute to these efforts Can you train others or mentor other talents?

With the experience gathered from my years of service, and also with the help of God, I’ll efficiently contribute positively to the efforts of the TOCSS Foundation. I have mentored few people directly and indirectly in this field. I can definitely train and mentor many more others.

You are also a part of the Temidayo O. Music Medicine Project, what is your take about using quality music to promote public health and safety?

Quality music can be a powerful tool for promoting public health and safety, especially when combined with a larger public health initiative. Music has an amazing capacity to connect with people on an emotional level. Catchy tunes and memorable lyrics can engage and help one remember public health and safety messages better than dry lectures. Aside from that, music can reach a diverse audience across cultures and languages. A well-crafted song can be translated or adapted to appeal to a variety of demographics. Upbeat and positive music can encourage a sense of community and inspire people to act. In essence, music can become a part of a cultural dialogue. A catchy song about handwashing or using a seatbelt can start conversations and normalise healthy habits.

Have you been to any other country to minister or perform?

I have been to The United Kingdom to minister with my former boss as a background vocalist during his concert in May 2023. And I can tell you it was a remarkable experience. The turn out and genuine love from everyone was quite overwhelming.

  • IWD: Stop stigmatization of widows – Aboyeji

IWD: Stop stigmatization of widows – Aboyeji

Patricia Olayinka Aboyeji is the CEO/Founder of Saint Raphael Support Foundation, a non-governmental organization (NGO). In this interview with OLAITAN GANIU, she speaks on the challenges and stigmas many widows are facing in commemoration of this year’s International Widows Day.

“We need to take into account that all the abuses, barbaric, and malicious ways of dealing with widows in the name of culture, is posing a lot of problems to the mental health of these vulnerable women,” she said.

Continuing Aboyeji said, “Majority of the women get confused and often lose concentration or focus including their memories because the stress levels are tremendously high which results in their inability to function well.”

In Nigeria alone, statistics show that there are over 4 million disadvantaged widows with over 21 million children. An average of 500 wives become widows on a daily basis.

Widows have been referred to by the United Nations as “invisible women” (UN Women, 2001) due to the absence of data on their situation. This document provides a review of the evidence on harmful cultural practices against widows and preventive measures.

“Despite the huge rise in the number of these sets of women, just a little is known or heard about them and their wellbeing simply because, historically their issues have been left unseen, and unmeasured. Their voices are unheard, and their agonies go unnoticed. This relates that they are silent victims and forgotten sufferers.

“However, the Bible is against any form of abuse or violence against the widows. the book of Exodus 22:22-24  says “You shall not mistreat any widow or fatherless child. If you do mistreat them, and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry, and my wrath will burn, and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives shall become widows and your children fatherless.”

She described a widow as a married woman who has lost her spouse or partner. They become single married women who have lost their husbands to death and automatically lose the identity of their marriage status.

“As of 2019 before the global pandemic, the world statistics show that there were about 259 million widows across the world, 116 million of them live in extreme poverty, about 86 million widows have faced various forms of physical and emotional abuse, and an average of 2 million of their children are liable to die before the age of 5.”

“Facing the reality, the Bible in the book of James declares, “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world. (James 1:27).  Let us jointly take care of the less privileged widows in our society and the nation as a whole will be greatly built.

  • FIKAYOMI AGBOLA: Showcasing Afrocentric fashion my passion

FIKAYOMI AGBOLA: Showcasing Afrocentric fashion my passion

UK-based Nigerian, Fikayomi Agbola, is passionate about fashion design and is determined to ensure that African fashion remains prominent on the global stage through her brand, Bittany. Inspired by a high school moniker and fuelled by childhood frustrations with local tailors, Bittany embodies perseverance and creativity. She shares insights with David Bolarinwa on her brand’s origins, challenges, and future vision. Excerpts:

What or who inspired the creation of Bittany and why the name?

The journey of Bittany began with frequent disappointments from tailors, especially for custom-made outfits—a common frustration for many Nigerians and non-Nigerians. This frustration became an opportunity to create something beautiful, transforming it into a hobby and then a passion for fashion design.

I started learning to sew female designs at 16 and made fashion a side hobby while focusing on my studies in Economics at the University of Ibadan. During holidays, I practised sewing with my mum’s fabrics. The name ‘Bittany’ originated from my high school moniker, which stuck and evolved into a full-fledged identity, symbolising perseverance, transformation, and the celebration of African heritage and style.

    What’s your start-up story?

Bittany’s startup story began in 2017, right after my NYSC programme. Despite starting my career in a consulting firm, my passion for fashion never waned. I managed a fashion house for a year, gaining invaluable insights while also becoming a chartered accountant. I believed that my background in accounting, economics, and fashion would eventually align perfectly.

Bittany started with me making clothes for friends and family, locally sourcing all fabrics and producing in Nigeria. One highlight was making outfits for female hosts on a TV show airing on Africa Magic. Using my mum’s old sewing machines, I crafted designs in my parents’ house, eventually turning a hobby into a business.

What was your mission from the outset and what is it now?

Initially, I wanted to make beautiful, well-fitting designs for women. Over time, I aimed to shine a spotlight on the rich tapestry of African fashion, showcasing its beauty and diversity. Bittany now designs for men and children as well.

After moving to the UK, I rebranded Bittany to bridge the gap in bringing contemporary Afrocentric fashion to the forefront. We now incorporate sustainable methods like upcycling to ensure ethical production. Bittany is about creating stunning garments and empowering people to embrace their individuality confidently.

My vision includes establishing a youth empowerment programme, and offering free sewing vocational training to young people, especially women from less privileged backgrounds, enabling them to gain financial independence and positively impact their communities.

     What makes your brand unique?

We pride ourselves on fabric fusion and creating contemporary styles that celebrate African culture. Blending traditional African aesthetics with modern design sensibilities, we offer customers captivating designs. Bittany ranges from everyday wear to occasion wear, including ready-to-wear and custom-made pieces. This variety empowers customers to curate a wardrobe reflecting their unique style, promoting a sustainable ethos and conscious consumption.

     Who is Bittany for?

Bittany primarily caters to women, empowering them to look and feel confident. However, our tagline, ‘Be unapologetically unique,’ reflects our inclusive approach. Bittany is for anyone who dares to express themselves boldly and authentically through fashion, regardless of gender or age. From custom-made designs to ready-to-wear, there’s something for everyone at Bittany.

What are your greatest achievements so far?

Bittany has achieved milestones I’m incredibly proud of. Designing outfits for female presenters on a show airing on Africa Magic was a significant highlight. I’ve also designed for notable celebrities like Temi Otedola, Don Jazzy and DJ Cuppy. In 2021, we started serving the UK market, launched our e-commerce website www.bittany.co.uk  and opened our first physical store in Lagos, Nigeria. Showcasing at Africa Fashion Week, London in 2023 was also a major accomplishment.

Can you share some success habits or tips that have helped you?

Perseverance, adaptability, and continuous learning have been crucial. Surrounding myself with a supportive network of professionals, family, and friends has been invaluable. Staying true to my values, maintaining a positive mindset, and embracing challenges as growth opportunities have propelled me forward.

What can we expect from Bittany going forward?

I aim to introduce Bittany to a global audience via our e-commerce website and collaborate with brands with a similar ethos. I look forward to partnering with retailers to stock Bittany’s designs, and potentially opening another physical store soon. Bittany’s sister company, Kayomi, is also in development, so stay tuned and join us on this journey.

What advice would you offer to someone just starting?

Embrace the idea of starting small and refining your approach as you go. Dive into resources like ‘The Lean Startup’ by Eric Ries for valuable insights. Don’t be afraid to ask for help; people are often more willing to assist than you might think. Above all, never lose sight of your vision and believe in yourself. Entrepreneurship is a journey filled with ups and downs, but staying true to your purpose and persevering through challenges is key to success.

  • How Nigerians, foreigners celebrated TB Joshua

How Nigerians, foreigners celebrated TB Joshua

The late leader of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), Temitope Joshua, touched many lives while he was alive.

Aside from his generosity, the late cleric was known for his knack for prayer, perseverance, self-discipline, and dedication to the things of God. It is almost an understatement to say that he drew people to God.

Loved by many, and even in death, they still talk about him in the present. Little wonder, during the third anniversary of his glorious departure from the earth on June 5, 2021, all-night praise and worship were held in his honour at the SCOAN headquarters, Lagos. The event attracted people from all over the world.

Speaking during the event to honour the late televangelist, his daughter Promise, said, “I’m his favorite daughter, but he loved all of us equally. Yes, indeed. At the very core, Prophet TB Joshua’s life is marked by a virtuous commitment to raising soldiers of Christ, not just locally, but also globally.”

Joshua, who would have been 61 on June 5, attracted many foreigners to the headquarters of the church in Ikotun-Egbe, a Lagos suburb.

The SCOAN host community will continue to remember the late cleric for putting the community on a world map.

Promise disclosed that her father, Joshua, superintendent of a church of all seasons, “A ministry where satanic cages and demonic bondages are broken. Even to the shock and the admiration of even the unbelievers.

“A ministry that has stood the test of time, that continues to stand the test of time, and that will continue to stand the test of time to the glory of God. Yes. But Prophet TB Joshua was not just this global Christian leader and fatherly covering to so many people all around the world.”

Preaching love, she urged the church to celebrate the values that her father stood for which was love. “Love that sees beyond hatred. That is, when you are hated, you should love. Love that sees beyond intimidation”.

A South African nationalist and former South African Football Association (SAFA) President, Dr. Kirstan Nematandam, who flew into Nigeria to partake in the solemn night ceremony, described the all-night praise and worship event as “A spiritual high watershed, and a great moment in all continents of the world to thank God for the grace of T.B. Joshua on earth in His ineffable love for mankind and His creation.

He described T.B. Joshua as a great man of God whose life was Christ-like, living the word and practicing the word. “He was the light shining in the darkness, the most humble man you could ever come across who touched the lives of millions, preaching the Word with power and with an extraordinary philanthropy across the universe,” he said.

Notwithstanding the simultaneous happening of the event in several nations, many still flew into Ikotun-Egbe SCOAN’s headquarters.

The serenation of the late cleric lit up the Ikotun-Egbe SCOAN’s headquarters with international visitors from many African countries, America, Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, filling the cathedral to the brim.

The atmosphere was ecclesiastically electrifying as people from diverse languages from all walks of life spoke glowingly of the transformational power of God in their lives through their encounters with T.B. Joshua.

A leading Pastor from Argentina who came to Ikotun Egbe for the event, Pastor Robert Acosta said: “The men of God who impacted lives and transformed generations under the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit never die. The Bible says, ‘Their works with them continue’.

“The teachings, the example, the impartation continue to live on in our hearts and our lives. Prophet T.B. Joshua, his life, example, and ministry, have been a gift from God to the whole world but in a particular way to my life, my wife and family, and to our church and congregation.

“He was our pastor, our friend, for five years until he passed on to glory, and we continue to live with the legacy he had left us. The impartation we had received from the Holy Spirit through the life of the man of God, continues to bring healing to the sick, continues to raise cripples, and perform amazing miracles and deliverances; not only should we but we want to honor God for the life of the man of God, that is why we come to Nigeria to exalt God and I believe that just as in the days of Elisha, when he had already departed, there was anointing in his bones, I believe there is still much anointing to continue resurrecting lives and ministries, not by a man that had passed on to glory, but by the Spirit of God that continues to operate.

“We have come to honour God with joyful activities for this great man of God.

“He has been for me a father in the Lord, a friend, a pastor, and has been an honour from heaven to have walked and shared time with him, his teachings, his advice, and his prayers have transformed our lives.

“Even today, in our radios, discipleships, and meetings his teachings are still alive…

God has done it through the man of God”.

Also paying glowing tributes to the late SCOAN leader, a leading Brazilian cleric, Pastor Sandro Gomes dos Santos, who was happy to be in Nigeria again said: “I am here to celebrate the birthday of Prophet T.B. Joshua, a unique man, a unique prophet, a great man of God and his legacy remains. It is ageless and cannot be forgotten. The good works he did here on earth are wonderful and cannot be forgotten.

“Prophet T.B. Joshua impacted my life not only with his ministry of miracles, signs, and wonders but with his love for the Word. When he spoke the Word it went straight into my heart and changed the way I was and the way I thought. His teaching on offence and forgiveness completely changed my heart. With him, I learned how to let go of offence and the importance of having a pure heart.

“He exemplified everything he taught; his life was a life of excellence. Prophet T.B. Joshua’s legacy is beyond time and will remain forever. He is a special man of God, there is no other like him. The opportunity to be here on this anniversary for me is a gift from God.

“I come to honour the life of Prophet T.B. Joshua and his legacy. As the Bible says: He who honours a prophet receives a prophet’s reward. This is an opportunity given by God, not man. God in His infinite grace allowed me to come and showed me that

“His anointing and power continue here in this ministry through Pastor Evelyn Joshua. There is a fresh anointing, something new and extraordinary. The wonders of God continue to work here at SCOAN. God has done great and extraordinary things through Prophet T.B. Joshua and that mantle continues to rest upon Pastor Evelyn Joshua, just as it did with Elisha. I am so grateful to be here to celebrate the life and legacy of Prophet T.B. Joshua”.

Mr. Segun Olanipekun, one of the coordinators of the church, who was full of excitement, disclosed to the vivacious crowd present at the event that the last three years had been of joyful activities and the ministry had greatly expanded. “Some of the programmes that I can remember that have taken place under Pastor Evelyn Joshua’s leadership are: The church was reopened after about two years of lockdown, we had a three-day revival on the prayer mountain,

Akure branch was reopened, frequent weekly charity work in the church,

Partners, revival, crusade, and charity meetings in South Africa, Ghana, Lusaka, Zambia, Madrid in Spain, Kenya, France, Germany, UK, USA, Canada and Nigeria.

“The tempo for these activities has been more reinforced. The church has remained in the precious arms of the Lord. It has been a wonderful three years of God’s tremendous grace for the church.

“Synagogue Church Of All Nations SCOAN today is the exemplification of the biblical word of Prophet Isaiah: the mills of God grind slowly but they grind exceedingly fine.”

  • Why we need hymns back in churches – Umoru

Why we need hymns back in churches – Umoru

A Senior Pastor in the Deeper Life Bible Church, Pastor Andrew Umoru has called for the restoration of gospel hymns in churches as they prime the soul, heart, and mind even before the message.

Umoru said this at the Sounds Hymnal Strings Concert held recently at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Chapel Annex. It was supported by the Chapel of Christ Our Light, UNILAG.

It also featured a drama presentation by Free Gift International Drama.

Umoru sought the return to the hymns because “hymns are very solemn, it goes also beyond praising God,  worshiping Him more deeply. Every doctrine of the Bible is packaged into the hymns.”

He lamented that “Satan has taken over the songs from us and is now the choirmaster in many places of worship.  So, they package songs that move people away from holiness, sound doctrine, and focus on God.

“God is not interested in commercial singing. What he wants is for us to use the hymns to prepare the souls of men for heaven and for things that are sound and profitable and to impact our world and our society.”

He posited that hymns well presented with prayer and anointing, would lead to the conversion of souls and God will be glorified.

The Convener of the programme, Mrs. Lydia Enyidiya Eke, said that the essence of this concert was to release the power of hymns. Tell the stories behind hymns and how lives have been impacted through hymns. “We have seen too many noises within the Christendom and we don’t know much about hymns anymore.

“We find that in moments of crisis, moments of loss when somebody dies, or when terrible things happen, noise does not make it. But hymns will find a place. The coolness and quietness of songs that are spiritual and are breathed by the Spirit, anointed, will touch lives,” she said.
