  • Why I’ve stuck with my 35-year old car

Why I’ve stuck with my 35-year old car

69 year-old hotel proprietor and philanthropist Pa Julius Adinlewa reveals his love for his 35-year old Peugeot 505 car, his philosophy of money and plans for his 70th birthday. He spoke with Taiwo Abiodun.

All eyes were on 69 year-old Pa Julius Adinlewa, as he entered his car and zoomed off. He looked quite a very popular man, as he attracted praises from all around. More of the gazes however seemed to focus on his old 505 Station wagon car, with registration number AY505KTU, which many claimed, has served him for 35 years. Sighting the excited multitude, Adinlewa became quite excited himself, honking, smiling and waving. A few of the crowd sneered at him for feeling hip in such an old car, which they called ‘old school,’ but others showered praises on him for his great maintenance culture.

Responding to questions by this reporter hours later, Adinlewa however said “As for me, I feel fulfilled when people gather to watch me drive my old and renewed car.”

    Features

Of course, a good part of the features have changed, Adinlewa admitted; “Many usually take it for a Jeep when I’m approaching because of its bumper, while many get confused when they see the headlights, thinking it is one latest car; but when they get closer and see that it is indeed a 505 station-wagon, they usually go wild with admiration and hail me for keeping it in good shape and maintaining it. I have changed the features, but not the structure. I put a new bumper, remolded the headlights and make it look fantastic.

“Of course some other people would look at it and shout, “So this kind motor still dey?” Adinlewa said.

    “I don’t waste money”

Adinlewa who is the current President of Ondo State Association of Hoteliers is the proprietor of White Palace Hotel located in Oba-Ile, Akure said “I feel fulfilled and flattered when people talk about my car. Anytime I take a drive out, they always make it an issue and topic of discussion.

“Some rumour carriers even say that I don’t have money to buy another, which is ridiculous. But those who know me very well know that it is out of interest and curiousity,” he continued. “It is not that I don’t have the money to buy cars, but I prefer old fashioned cars to all these ones. Our people like expensive lifestyle and latest fashion, but I count all that as waste. I am not a car freak. While some who cannot afford to maintain an ordinary car will go and buy a Jeep of 10 to 15 million naira; thinking it puts them in a certain class or gives them a status symbol, the truth is that it does not. That is why all these foreign countries are using Nigeria as a dumping ground. They believe there is a market for their products here.”

    My love for old cars

Reiterating his love for old vehicles, Adinlewa said “Sometime ago, somebody asked me to come and buy a  brand new car for a lesser price; but I asked him whether he has an old Rolls Royce Car, and I didn’t get any response. So since then, I have not seen him again. I am not a politician but look at what the newly elected Ekiti governor, Ayodele Fayose rode to the stadium when he went for his swearing in as the new governor. Does it mean Governor Ayodele Fayose cannot afford a Jeep? He can afford it, and that is the humility, simplicity and maintenance culture we are talking about.”

Continuing, he said I believe in using my money judiciously; to assist the needy but not to be flaunting it. I don’t believe in amassing wealth without touching human lives. Many are there spending money on frivolities, women and buying exotic cars, but how many hours am I going to spend in the car? It is only the professional drivers who spend six hours or more in a vehicle. I believe in helping people and assisting the needy, not keeping a fleet of cars. I am not a car freak person! He concluded.

    Genesis of his car

“I have been riding my Peugeot car for the past 35 years.  I bought it for 3,000 naira from a car dealer in Ondo State. When I bought it, my friends asked me to come and ‘wash’ it for them, and I ‘washed’ it with 250 naira, for we bought drinks, food and entertained visitors and well wishers. Not long after that, Ondo  state was created in 1976.”

Before then, Adinlewa revealed that he was using a Mercedes Benz, which was the reigning car in terms of fashion, newness and expensiveness. It was only the rich who could afford it. I followed it with a Peugeot because it was meant for high class people. But today instead of buying a car for two or three million naira, I decided to refurbish this car for 250,000 and it is admired everywhere.”

On what he does for a living, he Adinlewa said “I am an hotelier. I own the White Palace Hotel here in Akure, I like old vehicles and rather than waste resources, so I would just change some of the features of my old car like the rear light, the bumper and the pattern of the car. In fact you could even be confused at first about the brand.”

He also revealed that he once bought a Volkswagen Beetle that was manufactured in 1958 and used it until he could no longer get its spare parts. “I bought the Beetle from a foreigner in those days but after many years I couldn’t find its spare parts again. These old vehicles are very, very strong and durable. There was a time I once changed my old Golf Car; I went to buy a Volvo bumper for it. My thought is that one does not need to be wasteful and we should cultivate that principle of maintenance culture.

    Moments of Embarrassment

Often times, Adinlewa said he has had to deal with embarrassment from people who boldly accuse him of being stingy. Some also see him as the man who wears white always; but he claims that it is his choice. “When I drove my car to Lagos about two years ago, come and see how I was bombarded with questions. I became the cynosure of everybody, as if I was performing a play in the theatre. They bombarded me with questions and I tried as much as I could to respond. I remember a white man coming to me and shaking my hands, praising me for my ability to keep such a vehicle alive. He even gave me $250.”

Continuing, Adinlewa said “Whenever people challenge me, I simply tell them that I have the money to buy another car, but that I am not interested in wasting money. The question I ask is ‘why waste money when many people are out there seeking assistance? I know how many people I employed in my hotel; I know how many I am paying their school fees and hospitals.  Also the 505 Peugeot car in question does not consume fuel, so I cannot be blackmailed into spending money on rubbish. Besides, I like to be a reference point.” He concluded.

    Free thinker

As this interview wound down, Adinlewa, popularly known as Baba White and well respected as a philanthropist, revealed another curious side of him. “I don’t believe in going to church for going sake .I am a Free Thinker. My mission in this planet Earth is to render my service to humanity. If I die today, they can bury me in a small space but not in a mausoleum. The car driven with joy and happiness will not be remembered. I once read a short story that when one dies and goes to heaven the angel will not ask how many houses or cars one had but how many lives you touched.”

His plan for his Next Birthday

Adinlewa said he would be clocking 70 this year and that he looks forward to buying a 70-year. “I am planning to purchase a vehicle that is 70 or over 70years old to mark my birthday this year. All Nigerian journalists are welcomed.”

  • I’m a very natural person Mistura Asunramu Alao

I’m a very natural person Mistura Asunramu Alao

Nollywood actress, Mistura Asunramu Alao, has become a household name for her ability to interpret her roles well in movies. The multi-talented actress, who is currently holidaying in the U.S, shares with Adetutu Audu what it takes to be a successful actress and how she has been able to stay off scandal.

What have you been up to?

I have been doing well. Moving from one location to the other as usual. I stay at home with my family whenever I am not at location or don’t have event to attend.

Do you still have plans to act again, since you have relocated abroad with your hubby?

Relocated? No, I have not relocated. I am here on holiday and to attend to another issue which is not for public consumption. I am still very much in acting and can never think of leaving acting.

You seem to place much priority on your marriage than your acting career. Is it your hubby that is taking you away from your dream?

No, on the contrary, my husband has been encouraging me in my acting career. He never for a second discouraged me from acting. He does take me to locations whenever he is less busy and comes to check me if the location is not too far from where he is. Family is different from career; they are getting the treatment they deserve separately and one is not affecting the other.

Among several roles you have played, which one was most challenging?

I enjoyed every part I played in movies because they have different messages and challenges that come with them, but let me say Akiti and Fali Olomi. Akiti was the first movie that I would be involved in incantation; Fali Olomi was the first movie that I would be comical from the beginning till the end, and both were well accepted in the market.

How long do you intend to stay in acting?

Forever. It is something I love doing and derive pleasure in it.

Very busy schedules are often the reason for most separations in the industry.

Do you think your husband loves you enough to stay with you if you find yourself in any such situation?

He is a caring father and loving husband, he understands the nature of my job perfectly. I have gotten lots of busy schedules since we married and he has been there for me, he never complained. In fact, he contributed immensely to my personal productions.

Not many actresses will marry a journalist. For you, what was the attraction?

I didn’t marry him because of his job, but because of his person. He is loving, caring, understanding. You will never have a dull moment being with my husband. I am glad to have him.

What does it take to be a successful actress?

One must be patient because you can’t be successful in a day no matter the profession you are in. Be focused, believe in yourself, learn from others and never stay away from God. With that, the sky will be your starting point.

Don’t you think belonging to a particular association or caucus would have helped you get to the group of A-list actors today?

I am an actress; I relate and work with every group in the industry. Every actor and actress is my friend. God makes stars and not human beings or group you belong to. I thank God, anywhere my name is mentioned as regard acting, it rings a bell. Alhamdulilahi.

You seem to flow more with Yoruba movies. Do you have challenges crossing over?

I started with English movies; I acted in Love and Pride. I am in Daddy’s girls, a soap opera. I am also in a movie titled The Unsaid, and so on. I have been contacted for some English movies yet to be shot. If I am called for any, I will go.

As a fast-rising actress, how have you managed to stay off scandals?

I don’t go beyond my boundary and never aspire for what I can’t get. I leave my life as a natural person.

How do you manage advances from the opposite sex?

I have been handling it the way any mature lady would. It is a free world and everyone has a right to make amorous moves when expressing their feeling. I always try to be friendly about it. I do appreciate those who show interest in me because I believe they must have liked me before proposing an affair. I try to tell them I appreciate and understand the feelings, but I am married to the love of my life.

    Describe your style

I am a free person, who interacts with anyone no matter your status. I don’t leave a life of a star, I am just natural.

Has your career enhanced your style?

Not really, I can say my style enhanced my career.

What is the most expensive fashion item you own?

I don’t want to disclose that. But I love shoes and bags, as well as nice perfumes; they must not necessarily tear my pocket.

  • ‘Jonathan will be PDP’s last president’

‘Jonathan will be PDP’s last president’

The Founder/Spiritual Head of Inri Evangelical Church Lagos, Primate Elijah Ayodele, spoke with Adetutu Audu, on the forthcoming elections, among sundry issues. Excerpts:

What should Nigerians be looking forward to in 2015?

2015 is a year that Nigerians are expecting so many things. Many people have been saying that Nigeria will breakup but I can tell you that Nigeria will not breakup in 2015.

Nigeria will still remain a as, country in 2015 but we  need a lot of prayers against bloodbath. We need prayers for God to protect the country especially in the political scene because so many unexpected things will happen.

    Politically, what do you foresee?

Nigerian politics still needs a lot of prayers. We need to be prayerful to avert many politicians getting involved in accidents.

The election will not breakup Nigeria. There will be partial peace in some places while there will be no peace in some places. I don’t see Nigeria remaining a single nation in the  next 30 years. Jonathan will be the last PDP’s  president.

I see a new government coming up in this country. If Jonathan eventually wins in 2015, PDP will not have it in 2019. The party will break.

I don’t see APC capturing Abia State. If APGA works hard it will capture Abia, albeit I see rigging in the state. Rivers is another state we need to pray hard about so that there will be no stealing of ballot papers and there will be no killing. APC will want to retain the state and PDP too will not want to give up. These are the things we need to pray about for God to take total control. APC and PDP will share the northern part of the country.

Buhari should not be overwhelmed because the PDP will go with their foot soldiers to make sure that they get some. If the APC is not careful, PDP will take part of the south west from them. Let us pray that APC will not lose any of its BOT members and also in PDP.

A top APC leader, Obasanjo and Edwin Clark are playing their last politics. Some of them would be disappointed. We should pray so that there would not be crisis in the judiciary in Lagos, Rivers, Kano and Kaduna in particular.

There is going to be a change in our constitution as well. They will try to implement some of the things in the constitution and in the process there would be arguments. There would be a lot of discussion on our constitution after the elections.

Insecurity has been a serious challenge.  Would this abate in 2015?

Jonathan must handle the issue of security very well because terrorism has come to stay in the country. Even if another government comes in today, it will not be able to fight Boko

Haram.  Boko Haram will be targeting markets, motor parks and will abduct more children. We have Al Qaeda, ISIS teaming up with Boko Haram in the country right away.

We would need a lot of prayers to manage it. It is going to take the government a longer time to defeat Boko Haram. We also need to be very careful because I see explosions in many places, bomb blasts. Even in the South West here, we need to be very careful.

We also need to pray against tanker explosion. We are going to have ocean surge and also sea pirates with the federal government calling for assistance on this. Kidnapping will be on the increase and another wave of criminality will evolve. The police will try their best but there will be changes in our security network, namely the army, the Navy the Customs, the Immigration and the Prisons.

We should pray that there should not be a jail break. Journalists must be watchful. The NUJ in particular must be watchful because politics will tear the body apart. Some banks will face crisis. Let us pray against the death of any journalist in the year. Let us pray that we don’t lose any emir and prominent Oba in the southwest.

A traditional ruler will be dethroned in the east. We should also pray that the country does not run into debt. We must pray hard against ship capsize.

There are fears that the fall in oil price may spell doom for the country in 2015. What is your take on this?

I have not seen anything fantastic happening to our economy. Very soon, it will affect the rich too. I foresee a lot of problems in the CBN. There would re-organisation, re-shuffling and formation of policies that may not work for some commercial banks.

CBN will get it wrong in some areas and some banks will lay off some of their staff. Some communication companies will also lay off some of their staff. The prices of food stuff will go up. The prices of fish will go up.

I see shares doing fine in the early parts of the year. I have not seen anything fantastic happening to unemployment. The prices of petroleum will go up. Let us pray against pipeline explosion and breakdown. There is going to be a lot of crisis in the NNPC and there would be new refinery. Some of the oil we are having will dry up.

In the next 15 years, our oil may not be as rich as it has always been. Some states will break down economically in 2018 and 2019 because of debt. We need to pray hard so that 20 of all the states that we have do not break down economically. Our foreign reserve will experience crisis. I have not really seen anything cheering about it.

What other issues should the people look up to in the year?

Let us pray very well that no calamity happens in the aviation sector because it is possible that we are going to witness air crash. Nigeria Air Force will lose their plane through crash.

Let us pray as well so that we do not see death in the army. I want to beg the president to pardon these 54 soldiers that have been sentenced to death. There is so much blood that is crying and the land is not at peace. If the President allows them to be killed, it will affect the progress of this country.

He can dismiss them or punish them in another form instead of killing them.  Boko Haram will want to attack the barracks and let us pray against any police headquarters being engulfed by fire.

  • Life as a blind man is pathetic

Life as a blind man is pathetic

Visually impaired Dr. Ebohor Micheal Ndidi is the School Counsellor at Mayflower International College in Sagamu, Ogun State. He is an Applied Psychologist, who, despite his situation, is very outgoing, receptive, charming and welcoming. Interestingly, his declaration that “I am a very easy going person and I try to make new friends everyday,” tallies with the aforementioned qualities.

He, however, declared that “grappling with the outside world most times is a different ball game, as people do not seem to understand that visually impaired people are human beings, who have their senses, brain and sensual organs intact and could live normally. Taking time out to speak with this reporter, Ndidi shared his hopes, challenges and how he has defied the odds to make a success in his chosen career.

Like Essienkan, Ebohor  was not born blind. He became blind in 1997 when hoodlums came to burgle his house and he didn’t have money to give them. “I was a student of the College of Education, Oyo State at the time and I told them that I did not have any money, but rather than let me be, they beat me up and cut out my two eyes.”

Subsequently, he went through rehabilitation with the Oyo Central Hospital for two years.

“After my rehabilitation, I went back to Oyo College of Education to finish my course and later proceeded to do my BSC and MSC and Doctorate Degree at the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) Ogun State.”

    Life as a blind man

“Life as a blind man is very pathetic,” he reflects. “I am ordinarily an outgoing person. I love to make friends and create a lot of fun around me, but life as a blind man has been full of ups and downs; successes and challenges resulting from my disability.”

He recalls how, when he went back to school in 1997 to continue his National Certificate of Education programme, his best friend stole his recorder, which he used in taking notes in the class. He said that action affected his grade in school that year, adding that “people cheat us, lie and take advantage of our disability.”

He also reveals that getting a job as a doctor in applied psychology has been a tall dream. “I once applied for a job online and was invited for the interview; but on getting to the panel, they told me openly that I could not be employed in their company because I am visually impaired.”

According to him, one other challenge he has faced is that people’s attitude tend to suggest that his PHD was awarded to him out of sympathy. But he said this is not true. “I had a wonderful supervisor who ensured that I go through the books, did my field work, presented and defended my thesis to earn my doctorate degree.”

In his opinion,  Ebohor  thinks that “our society is such that people think that the visually impaired should be pitied and should live on aid and peanuts for the rest of their lives. But I think this should not be the case. Visually impaired persons may have lost their sight, but they have their brains, minds, sensual organs and other senses intact, and can contribute meaningfully to the society.”

  • Five strange things people do on trains

Five strange things people do on trains

Fresh from a train ride, Olabisi Kehinde recounts some of the weird and out-of-the-world activities that some passengers engage in on board.

A quick train ride from Lagos-Ijoko will surely shock any passenger who is new to the route. Lots of weird activities, ranging from smoking, drinking, gambling to, wait for it, browsing.

Recently this reporter rode on the train from Apapa (Lagos) to Ijoko (Ogun state) to avoid the road traffic that had become intolerable going into the New Year.

The first shock this reporter received was that a good number of the passengers seemed to board the train for the simple fact that it gives them an opportunity to several other drinking friends and engage in endless drinking spree all through the journey.

    Best place to drink

Interestingly, a couple boarded the train at Yaba station. You could tell that they were lovebirds and not a few heads turned as they negotiated their ways to empty seats in a corner, even as they chatted endlessly. Not long after, the man excused himself and up. But after waiting endlessly for a while, the wife stood up to look for her husband. But along the line, she met his friend, who told her that her husband was on top of the moving train drinking. Asked why he had to go all the way to the top of the train to drink, her man told her that it is the best place to drink, because he feels the breeze and see things around him.

    Best place to browse

After a while, this reporter also observed that some guys were migrating to the top of the moving train to browse. Perplexed, she approached one of them, Ebube to ask why.

“That is the best place to browse” he replied. He said it is always a great feeling and preferable to browse at the top of the train, because the network is always good and really nice. It does not matter to them how dangerous this great adventure is and that they could lose their lives in the process. In fact, investigation revealed that many lives have been lost in the course of this reckless action, and it is a wonder that others have not learnt any lessons. Somehow, they always believe that are safe.

Reserving seats for those still at home

Another funny but annoying habit is the fact that some people purchase multiple tickets mainly to reserve seats for their friends and families, most of whom might still be in bed (in case of early morning rides) or yet to get to the station or waiting for the train at the next stations.

In the process, legitimate passengers who are qualified to sit are made to stand, frustrated, while new entrants stroll in to claim the seats reserved for them.  This has also resulted in crises. One passenger recalled how one evening, a man kept a ticket on the seat to reserve it for a passenger yet to get on board and a group of guys who felt enough was enough flung the tickets aside and took their seats. An argument ensued, which eventually led to a fracas.

    Corrupting the checkers

This reporter also discovered that some criminally-minded passengers have formed the bait of tipping the train checkers, thereby corrupting them in the process. A passenger actually chipped in that most of the checkers always end up collecting the tip, as it is either they collect or such passengers ride free.

“They prefer to tip the checkers with N100, rather than buy the ticket of N230, thereby shortchanging the railway corporation.” One passenger chipped in.

    Dangerous hangers

This might be a familiar sight to a lot of people, but it is nevertheless dangerous and an eyesore. Passengers have been known to fall off, while a particular story was told of how one of the men who was hanging, was snatched by a thick branch in the middle of nowhere, as the train sped off and flung to the body of the heavy steel machine.

Needless to say, neither the train nor the other passengers stopped to take another look.

  • Remember heaven, cleric charges Christians

The Special Adviser, Administration and Personnel to the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Johnson Odesola, has charged Christians to live with the consciousness that Jesus could come anytime.

He pointed out that many Christians have been distracted by earthly concerns and might be caught unawares should the saviour return.

Odesola spoke at the public presentation of Living on Empty by the Media and Publicity Director of the National Youth Office of RCCG, Pastor Femi Enigbokan, in Lagos.

“Most times, we major in minor and forget that the major thing that makes heaven glad is our walk with God, which is personal and has great reward when Jesus Christ comes,” he said.

Odesola applauded Enigbokan, who he referred to as his son, and said the book is a timely intervention for the church to remember that the coming of the Lord is at hand.

The author, Enigbokan, said that the Christian race is a marathon with several pitfalls carefully premeditated by the enemy to put out the fire among believers. Living on Empty shed light on these snags and how to successfully overcome them in our quest to make heaven while fulfilling purpose on earth.

He said Living on empty is a mix of deep teaching, sharing real life issues, practical insights and sundry matters.

“In the book, I tried to do an expose on some of the major factors that subtly lead to spiritual burnout in the lives of believers’ activities, rate of inflow to outflow, not being deeply rooted in Him, wrong association, disengagement due to length of stay and the problem and pleasures of life and how we can with the help of the Holy Spirit overcome them,” he stated.

BRACKET: Nigerian music industry is more of fame than fortune

Obumneme Ali, a.k.a. Smash, and Nwachukwu Ozioko, a.k.a. Vast, popularly known as Bracket, rocked the entertainment scene with their hit Yori Yori, and also became a household name across Africa. Vast, one half of the popular singing duo, was diagnosed with lymphoma – a type of cancer of the blood. The duo opened up to Adetutu Audu how they survived the most troubled part of their career, their foundation and plans for 2015.

THIS is a new year. What are your plans for the year?

The last time we met, we discussed about the Bracket Cancer Foundation. One of us had cancer and by God’s grace he survived it. What we passed through, we don’t want other people to go through it. We are trying as much to get sponsorship to at least help people to survive. Even if the person dies, at least we helped. We have seen a lot of people losing their lives due to lack of fund. Their people watch them die due to lack of help.

That is why we did that song alive. It is like thanking God for surviving. We featured Diamond and Tiwa Savage. It has already hit the airwaves.

    Who wrote the song?

We were in America when the inspiration came. Vast brought the idea of the chorus. We were in the studio with Flavour then; we rubbed ideas together and eventually came up with it. We wanted to work with Davido but he was not available. We later met Diamond in South Africa.

But it seems you did not do more in 2014?

I think the misconception is that when people say after Yori Yori, they have not heard from us, I laughed. This is because we have a big competition in the industry and people pay more attention now to upcoming acts that just blew up. That is why you don’t really know that others are working. Last year, we had a song, International baby, though it may not be big.

While my partner was in the hospital, we shot a video, Temperature, with Clarence Peters. We also did Nana and Mama Africa.  If I play the songs, I am sure they will be familiar to you. Aside Lagos, we are bigger in Africa. When we go outside Nigeria people appreciate us because they listen to album. In Nigeria, we don’t like to listen to album. We can perform 20 songs on stage and people will be screaming.

I remember when we had a show in Enugu, our manager gave Jimmy Jatt about 14 songs that we wanted to perform. He was surprised because he said even the big acts cannot do more than five songs. By the time we were through, Jimmy said he became our number one fan again because he knew all the songs but did not know we sang them.  It is not like that we are not doing enough, the Nigerian music industry is more of fame than fortune. But I will tell you I would rather get the fortune than the fame.  Everywhere in the east they play our songs, but we don’t feel it here in Lagos. Any artiste that can last six years in the Nigeria music industry has tried. The biggest thing is that we are international artistes and not Nigerian artistes. Our first concert was in Sierra Leone and later other East African countries and the francophone countries, which is our biggest base now.

The most challenging period of your career was when Vast was down with cancer. How would you describe that period?

That was in 2013. When it started, we had series of concerts outside Nigeria. We were going and they were paying. The last one was in Burkina Faso where we were to perform for the first lady. They had already paid but he was really feeling down. In all these, we were waiting for the result of the tests he had undergone.  Someone now advised that instead of waiting, we should go to London and start afresh. The guy in Burkina Faso had to come to the hospital to confirm. The most challenging is returning the money. And when people sent us invitations for events and the money involved and we could not even reply, despite that we were spending money and could not work to get more.

It was a setback. I had to get up from the hospital bed to shoot the temperature video with Clarence Peters in London.

Did you ever think that you were going to die?

That was at the initial stage when the news broke and the doctor said ‘I hope you survive.’   But I prayed and told God I needed love. People showed me love and I was encouraged. I thought I would lose all the blood in my body but thank God I survived it. After a week, I started having complications; I had to return to the hospital to have blood transfusion after which I felt better. We spent a lot of money. At a point, I was hopeless and was only praying to God for His mercies. After the second chemotherapy, I started exercising because the doctor advised me to do regular exercise. However, it was after the third chemotherapy that the pictures I took while in the hospital leaked. By then, I was already bouncing back to life because I passed through the valley of the shadow of death. After the fourth chemotherapy, we shot a video, Temperature, in London.  I was only going to the hospital, then to the gymnasium and back to the house. After the seventh chemo, I was told to do a lumber punch – they would have to inject my spine. It was done after the fifth chemo and it was very painful. I thought I would be paralysed. I was told the lumber punch was necessary to prevent the disease from getting to the brain. At that point, our account was almost in the red.

    Are you fully well now?

The whole cancer thing has been cured. I only need to see the doctor for the next five years. I have done that for over a year now. The essence is that I go through a scan and if they see any tumour growing, they fight it. But if they don’t see after five years, that means it is gone.

The doctor warned you against having sex then. Why?

The essence is that by mistake if I impregnated a lady, the child may be deformed. The white people know what they are doing. Before the commencement of the treatment, they took some sperm and save in case the treatment later affected me, I can still bear children. But thank God nothing of such happened.

What have you learnt from your experience?

I learnt that life is very precious. No matter what you do and wherever you are, don’t look down on anybody because you don’t know who will help you tomorrow. Another thing is that you don’t have to be scared of death. You have to face the challenge. Live a normal life. If you are scared of death, you will die. At a point, when I got very scared, the sickness came in full force, but when I started picking courage, it subsided and I recovered.

While all this was going on, did Smash not think of pursuing a solo career?

It never occurred to me. The only thing that was in my mind was how I was going to face his mum if anything bad happened. The family was aware that he was sick but they didn’t know how bad it was. They don’t even know it was cancer.  We were the only one encouraging ourselves; nobody called to give us any money.

Cancer treatment is capital intensive. How much are you looking at for your foundation?

We are planning a big concert from our state, Enugu, and the train will later move to Lagos. Whatever we raised, that is how we are going to start up.  I went to a hospital recently and I met a man with both nose and ear swollen. On enquiry, the nurse said when the man had cancer of the nose, when he came initially, he only needed N150,000 and because of lack of fund, he returned home. By the time he was ready with the money, the tumour had spread to the ear.

Do we see you guys break up in the nearest future?

After all that we went through, we don’t foresee a break-up. The situation has proved that we are born to be together, though we started as three. Ali Baba once described us as coke and fanta.

What are we expecting from you in 2015?

We want to do a remix of our song Nana, launch our foundation and if possible drop our album by April.
