‘Ladies want men for different reasons’

Dr Sid’s personal disc jockey, DJ Big N, born Nonso Temisan Ajufo, has a BSc in Psychology from UNILAG and an MBA from Coventry University UK. The turntable magician has been rocking the decks for a while. He was also the official DJ for the Miss Nigeria Pageant last year and The Miss Elite Nigeria Pageant as well as the official DJ for the MTN Corporate Elite 2013, which featured veteran artists such as Billy Ocean, Maxi Priest, Kool and the Gang, Tevin Campbell, Sisqo. The official DJ for the Nigerian Centenary Celebrations in Abuja who recently released his official ‘Mavin mixtape’ tells Adetutu Audu he is a divergent from the norm.

IT seems DJ is the in-thing now. Everybody wants to be one. What sets you apart?

For me, I am more like a doctor. It is like being a mechanic; you don’t just wake up one day to repair car. I put in a lot of hard work when people are sleeping. I wake up in the middle of the night, I am in my studio jamming. And because of the evolution in technology, you keep learning new things everyday and that has made things easier. People think DJ is just mixing two songs together. I think I go beyond that; it involves a lot of energy and calculations. You can mix two songs and people may not like it; it is going be a flop. Dj-ing is not just about mixing or cross fading songs, it goes way beyond that. Dj-ing is about calculation, transition, focus, energy, and most especially…your crowd. If you have got that on point, you probably don’t have a problem. It started when I was in London. I just decided to come back home and pursue my dream. I also love the fact that you can go to the club and get drinks without paying.

Which among your events will you rate as the best?

I was the DJ at Nigeria’s Centenary Celebrations in Abuja. I dished out the oldies. You see a lot of high profile people dancing. I played Rex Lawson, Eddy Okonta, Fatai Rolling Dollar. I was at Dangote’s 56th birthday too. I did classic Nigerian music for four hours at Dr. Sid’s wedding. If you are a DJ and you don’t surf the internet, you are not there yet. I take my job serious. I was also the official DJ for the Miss Nigeria Pageant last year and The Miss Elite Nigeria Pageant as well. The official DJ for the MTN Corporate Elite 2013, which featured veteran artists such as Billy Ocean, Maxi Priest, Kool and the Gang, Tevin Campbell, Sisqo. I was the official DJ for 2face Idibia’s traditional marriage in Akwa Ibom and also shared the stage with DJ Jimmy Jatt at his white wedding in Dubai.

Since your job involves mixing songs, how would you compare the old musicians and the new crop of musicians?

I see a revolution in Nigeria very soon where only content will sell because those without content won’t go far. In Angola now, you cannot sing a song that is not meaningful and sell. Now, all we hear is about booze and boobs.  People who are in music for the wrong reasons will not go far. The one that sings for lyrics and content will be sorted out.  DJ to me is a calling. It is bridging a gap and providing solutions to problems. I think outside the box.  If I am at a gig where about 10 people are dancing and one person is sitting down gloomy, if I can get that one person to dance, I am good. Nigeria is at a stage where there are ways out for the youths. My own is that they should go to school. Not everybody wants to be a 419 or drug peddler or armed robber.  Everybody in my family is educated; I have an MBA.  My father is liberal, as a matter of fact, he bought my first equipment for me.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

I love R&B and Reggae. I get my inspiration from meaningful songs. I got my gig with Dr. Sid’s Surulere song with a1989 song. And he was like, ‘guy, wow.’ He was surprised that I could achieve a great blend. You need to have a competitive advantage. I have a mobile karaoke I take around; once I listen and amplify it, I am good.

Despite all the sweet stories, what have been your challenges?

Stereotype. There is a stigma that people put on who doesn’t follow the norm.  I am a divergent. I don’t believe in one straight answer to issues. I explore; it could be left, right or centre or it can be circle. I am supposed to be at a vendors’ meeting and someone called me and said ‘DJ, hurry up’ and I said excuse me. By the time I arrived at the venue with my Jeep and I introduced myself as the DJ, the lady was blushing and was trying to apologise.  So you don’t look down on people. D-jing keeps your child off the street and off drugs. It is a way out from social vices. My dad once told me to be the best in whatever you do. Dress the way you want to be addressed. I no longer experience that, anyway. I position myself with big brands and big brand has conduct, they won’t talk to me anyhow.  If I have a show abroad, they pay for the flight; but in Nigeria, they oppress one to amplify themselves.

Who influenced you early in life? The good, bad and the ugly.

Well, we had some bad older cousins when we were growing up. I started drinking at 16. I did it and let it go. You don’t do them again when you are a man. My dad too was a great influence. If my dad has one naira, he is ready to spend 99k on his children. He understands the principle of dialogue. My mom as well; my family as a whole.  I come from a family where you will at one point or the other come in contact with music. My father lived in London for a long time. He is open to ideas. He just told me to make sure I finish from school, so that if all fails, I will have something to fall back on. I have a twin sister that works with an oil company. She is doing well for herself. To be honest with you, that is her life. I have chosen my own life.

You are in a business where ladies swim around you. How do you deal with them?

As I said, I had done all the bad things when I was young. It does not freak me. They are distractions because I know where I am going. Ladies want you for different reasons. Some because you are a DJ, or because they want free tickets to all the shows. It has ripple effect. Someone called me gay because I turned her down. A lot of girls come to me, some of them say they do music and along the line, I find out that they have never been to the studio.

  • Notorious arms dealers in modern history

Notorious arms dealers in modern history

THE arms industry is a truly global phenomenon. Guns, ammunition and other larger weaponry mean big business all over the world, and where there’s money to be made there will always be a corrupt or criminal element looking to capitalize on the market. The following men were or are masters at the gun game  shady figures who have traveled far and wide trafficking and distributing arms for cold hard cash while attempting to stay one step ahead of the authorities and their business rivals. What follows are the ten most notorious arms dealers in modern history.

    10. Adnan Khashoggi

Adnan Khashoggi is an extremely successful Saudi Arabian businessman. He also happens to have been a hugely prominent arms dealer. Regarded as the richest man in the world during the 1980s, the American-educated Khashoggi, now 79, began his arms trading career in the 1960s, brokering deals between US companies and the Saudi government. Amongst Khashoggi’s most famous clients were Lockheed (now Lockheed Martin), who during the early 1970s paid him $106 million in commissions. He concealed his financial dealings by setting up front companies in tax havens such as Switzerland. Caught up (along with Imelda Marcos, the widow of exiled Philippine president, Ferdinand) in the Iran-Contra affair, Khashoggi was arrested in 1988 but was acquitted two years later. He currently resides in Monaco, where his services as a facilitator are apparently still occasionally called upon  most recently in 2003, when he allegedly met with American political advisor Richard Perle right before the invasion of Iraq.

    9. Dale Stoffel

Dale Stoffel was an arms dealer who was heavily involved with the reconstruction efforts established in the wake of the Iraq War. Known for chomping a cigar and routinely having a machine-gun slung across his back  the popular image of a mercenary  Stoffel was killed while on his way to Baghdad in 2004. In 2003, his company, Wye Oak Technology, was awarded one of the first contracts from the newly established Iraqi Ministry of Defense, and in the end the value of his contracts with the nascent Iraqi government totaled over $40 million. During the year leading up to his death, the goatee-bearded Stoffel became an outspoken critic of irregularities in the Iraqis’ methods of payment for his efforts, and those of others like him, with allegations that corruption was rampant. Shortly before his death Stoffel was owed $24.7 million. His widow Barbara sued the Iraqi government for $25 million in 2009.

    8. Dr. Moosa Bin Shamsher

Dr. Moosa Bin Shamsher is a Bangladeshi business tycoon known for being a major player in international arms trading during the 1970s and 1980s (as well as for many other business ventures). Affectionately dubbed “Prince Moosa” by the South Asian press, this high-profile figure is, notwithstanding, known for dealings with other shady big name arms dealers on this list such as Adnan Khashoggi and Sarkis Soghanalian. It is also alleged that Shamsher has had Swiss bank accounts worth $7 million frozen because of “irregular” transactions. Formed in 1974, Shamsher’s business, DATCO, deals in global weaponry, including tanks, fighter planes and ballistic missiles. Almost as renowned as Shamsher’s arms dealings is his love of excess: he owns a fleet of a hundred private cars that includes Rolls-Royce models and limousines and wears diamond-encrusted shoes valued at $3 million.

    7. Samuel Cummings

Samuel Cummings was an American arms dealer and founder of the International Armament Corporation  a company that grew to all but monopolize the global market in private arms sales. Cummings died in 1998 at the age of 71 following a series of strokes but has been called (by The New York Times) the “undisputed philosopher-king of the arms trade.” Recruited as a weapons expert by the CIA in 1950, he spent the rest of the early 50s traveling Europe buying up large amounts of excess WWII weaponry. This led Cummings to start up the arms dealing business Interarmco, which would come to dominate the small arms market of 1950s and ’60s America. He also dealt with many famous international leaders, including Fidel Castro, to whom he sold a consignment of AR-10 rifles  much to the ire of General Rafael Trujillo, leader of the Dominican Republic, where Cummings was later doing business.

    6. Fares Mana’a

Said to be Yemen’s most infamous arms dealer, the official occupation of Sheikh Fares Mohammed Mana’a is Governor of Sa’dah, a city in north-western Yemen. Despite such standing, Mana’a’s more illicit activities have been noted by the United Nations Security Council, who added his name to a list of people accused of dealing arms to the Somali insurgents known as Harakat al-Shabaab Mujahedeen  a notorious group suspected of having links to Al-Qaeda. Mana’a has also been accused of spying for the late Libyan leader Colonel Gaddafi in return for millions in funds. In March 2011, Mana’a was installed as the new governor of Sa’dah following a battle between pro-government tribesmen and the Mana’a-supported Houthi rebels, to whom he is also accused of supplying arms.

    5. Sarkis Soghanalian

When Florida-based private arms dealer Sarkis Soghanalian died on October 5, 2011, an extraordinary life ended. Born in 1929, Soghanalian nicknamed the “Merchant of Death”  established himself during the Cold War, becoming the leading arms merchant during that time of political conflict. He was also infamous for being the foremost seller of weapons to Saddam Hussein during the 1980s. With the full knowledge and backing of the CIA, Soghanalian sold arms to Iraq in the midst of the Iran-Iraq War. He also sold weaponry to militia groups during the Lebanese Civil War, as well as to Ecuador and Nicaragua, and to Argentina during the Falklands War. Following the first Gulf war with Iraq, Soghanalian was jailed for six years for possession of arms and the intent to sell to Iraq. His sentence was reduced to two years, however, after he supplied the US with intelligence.

    4. Monzer al-Kassar

Syrian-born Monzer al-Kassar  also known by the glamorous title, the “Prince of Marbella”  is an international arms dealer of some notoriety. Currently incarcerated, al-Kassar began his career in trading weapons in the early 1970s when, by his own account, the Yemeni government requested that he buy arms for them from Poland. He lived in London from from around 1972 until 1984, at which point he was thrown out of the country by the British government for arms and drug trafficking. From London al-Kassar moved to Marbella, where he gained his extravagant nickname. Further allegations of arms dealing followed  including that he sold arms to and helped the hijackers of cruise ship the Achille Lauro. He also pocketed millions making sales to Croatia, Bosnia and Somalia when there was a UN arms embargo with the three countries. Al-Kassar was caught and convicted thanks to an elaborate DEA sting that began in 2006 and proceeded to his arrest in Madrid in 2007 and extradition to the US a year later.

    3. Jean-Bernard Lasnaud

When the French-born Jean-Bernard Lasnaud was arrested in 2002 in Switzerland, it ended almost three years of arrest requests from Argentinian courts and Interpol. Despite this, together with accusations from European courts on counts of arms smuggling and fraud, amazingly Lasnaud was allowed to live peacefully in South Florida for more than ten years before his past finally caught up with him. Lasnaud was in the business of selling arms from his luxurious gated community to anyone interested, with China and Somalia just two of the suspected client countries. According to his own estimates, Lasnaud’s Caribbean Group of Companies sold between $1 and $2.5 million in weapons every year. Accused of brokering thousands of tons worth of Argentinian weaponry to Croatia and Ecuador between 1992 and 1995, Lasnaud even boasted his own website to aid with his transactions. He is caught up in a complex web of corruption and scandals the true extent of which may never be known.

    2. Leonid Minin

Leonid Minin, a Ukrainian by birth, is a notorious international arms dealer. Born in 1947, he moved to Israel in the 1970s. He  was arrested by the German authorities later in the same decade for using false identification as well as under suspicion of art theft. His customers in the arms trade have allegedly included the Liberian dictator Charles Taylor as well as the Revolutionary United Front group which operated in Sierra Leone. The weapons that Minin dealt in are held to have had their origins in the Russian arms company Aviatrend, a group also involved in money laundering connected with toppled Yugoslav president Slobodan Milošević. Arrested by Italian authorities in 2000 for illegal arms dealings, Minin was sentenced to two years. Nicolas Cage’s character in the 2005 movie Lord of War is partly based on Minin, as well as Sarkis Soghanalian and our number one, Viktor Bout.

    1. Viktor Bout

Viktor Anatolyevich Bout, the most notorious arms smuggler on this list, currently faces seeing out the rest of his life behind bars. Extradited from Thailand to America in 2010 following a five-year operation by the DEA, the Russian national stands accused of illegally arming the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia in their operations against US forces. The jury found him guilty and he sentenced to 25 years in prison. Bout is reported to have made substantial amounts of money shipping goods in Africa and the Middle East in the 1990s and 2000s, and the former military translator for the Soviet Union may well have fed the flames of various African civil wars by supplying vast quantities of arms during the Nineties. He has also been dubbed a “sanctions buster” because of allegations that he violated UN arms embargoes in trading with Angola, Liberia, Sierra Leone and the Congo during the same decade. In 2001 Bout was furthermore implicated in the movement of gold and cash out of Afghanistan. The charges against him make Bout’s future prospects fairly grim indeed.

  • More on Carey-Cannon split

    More on Carey-Cannon split

IN the wake of Mariah Carey’s split from Nick Cannon, fans and friends were concerned that the iconic singer would suffer another public meltdown, such as the one that caused deep concern back in 2001. Mariah is older and wiser now, of course, and she was rumored to be holding up surprisingly well in the weeks following her separation from Cannon.

However, sources say that when Cannon visited her apartment to work out the terms of their divorce and visit the couple’s twins, she was secretly hoping for reconciliation.

Insider claims that part of the problem is that Nick indulged her diva behavior instead of occasionally putting his foot down, and Mariah doesn’t know how to hold herself together without Cannon at her beck and call.

And adjusting to single life is reportedly taking a serious toll on Mariah’s health: “She often goes into trances. She even has special assistants whose job it is to stand behind her in case she falls backwards. On top of that, she drinks wine of champagne constantly. It’s a recipe for disaster.”

Kendall Jenner: “Obsessed” With Chris Brown

Though there seems to be something going on between Kendall and Justin Bieber, KJ reportedly has her sights set on Chris Brown. And friends say she’s crossed the line between infatuation and unhealthy fixation.

Apparently, Kendall developed a thing for the rapper after Brown went clubbing with her in July.

Whatever happened that night must have made quite an impression on Kendall, as friends say she’s been hatching plans to cross paths with Breezy ever since.

Kate Middleton and Prince William to name baby number two Elizabeth

KATE Middleton and Prince William to sent excitement waves across the globe when they announced they were expecting baby number two. And despite not actually making a public appearance since revealing her pregnancy news, the rumour mill has already gone into overdrive.

So far, reports have suggested the Duchess of Cambridge will be giving birth to not one, but two babies in April 2015.

And now it looks like the 32-year-old already has the all-important baby name sorted too.

According to William Hill odds, Prince George is set to welcome a sister who will almost definitely be named Elizabeth.

Joe Crilly, a spokesman for the bookmakers said: “We have seen plenty of cash, even at this early stage of proceedings and it looks highly likely that Elizabeth is definitely on the shortlist.”

And if Kate has a boy instead, the name James seems to have topped the list.

Other suggestions include Victoria, Alexandra, Phillip and Henry.

Kate and her husband confirmed the happy baby news early September when the brunette was forced to cancel royal appearances due to suffering from Hyperemesis Gravidarum  acute morning sickness again

  • Hacked celebrities threaten $100 million lawsuit against Google

Hacked celebrities threaten $100 million lawsuit against Google

DOZENS of celebrities victimized by the still-uncaught Hollywood hacker have banded together for a potential lawsuit against Google.  Because photos of Jennifer Lawrence nude, Kate Upton nude and many others nude (such as Gabrielle Union, Meagan Good, Kim Kardashian, Jenny McCarthy, Vanessa Hudgens and Rihanna) still exist on the search engine, attorney Marty Singer has fired off a letter to the Internet behemoth.

It demands the company remove these illegally-obtained images ASAP… or pay a hefty price in court. In his letter, Singer slams Google for its “despicable, reprehensible conduct in not only failing to act expeditiously and responsibly to remove the Images, but in knowingly accommodating, facilitating and perpetuating the unlawful conduct.”

“Google is making millions and profiting from the victimization of women,” writes Singer, who on behalf of his clients, feels the company’s “blatantly unethical behavior” could result in damages in excess of $100 million.

Aside from taking down the hacked pictures, Singer wants the search engine giant to penalize sites that have posted the pictures.

“If your wives, daughters or relatives were the victims of such blatant violations of basic human rights, surely you would take appropriate action,” he says. “But because the victims are celebrities with valuable publicity rights, you do nothing  nothing but collect millions of dollars in advertising revenue from your co-conspirator advertising partners as you seek to capitalize on the scandal rather than quash it.

  • Porsha Williams stripped of Housewife Status

Porsha Williams stripped of Housewife Status

BRAVO may have just blindsided Porsha Williams by reducing her to “friend” status on The Real Housewives of Atlanta Season 7. As it turns out, Porsha’s demotion became public knowledge after The Real Housewives of Atlanta season 7 trailer was release this week.

She was going to be a series regular, but got knocked down a peg after filming had begun, after producers once again got fed up with her antics.

Even her monumental fight with Kenya Moore wasn’t enough to get Porsha fired, but her actions once the new season began filming were her undoing.

Bravo tried to get Williams and Moore to talk things out, but Porsha nearly fought Kenya again … and went after new cast member Claudia Jordan.

Apparently Jordan has some kind of connection to Williams’ ex-husband Kordell Stewart, and that doesn’t sit well with Porsha.
