Ogoni degradation, a cause for concern –MOSOP President

President, Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), Legborsi Saro Pyagbara speaks with Gboyega Alaka on the state of pollution and degradation of Ogoni-land and its trans-generational impact, government and Shell’s inaction on implementing the United Nation’s Environment Programmes’  (UNEP) report three years after.

THREE years after the UNEP Report, it doesn’t seem like the government or Shell is doing anything to implement it. How true is this from your privileged point of view as MOSOP President?

There is nothing like grading the truth. The truth is that nothing significant has happened in terms of implementation of the recommendations of the United Nations Environment Programme report. We’ve not seen the government mustering the political will and courage to make that bold effort to a level that will assure us of the protection or restoration of the degraded Ogoni environment.

Looking through the report, a few of the recommendations are such that a serious government would just have swung into immediate action to implement…

Well, that is the bottom line. The water crisis which is a component of the entire environmental crisis we are having is one. And this is quite important because we all agree that water is life. And if water is life and we all agree that water has been negatively impacted, then it means that life itself has been negatively impacted. And with the report and all that is stated in it that the water in Ogoni has been so polluted to a level that the concentration of benzene found in Ogoni water is up to 900 times more than the World Health Organisation’s accepted standard for consumption; and that alone points a very serious picture of the situation. Beyond that, the same report states that hydro-carbon was found in water in 49 locations, which again means that the water in Ogoni is threatened. And if the water in Ogoni is threatened, it means that the life of the average Ogoni person has been threatened.

There is also the part about subjecting every Ogoni citizen to a health test.

The report recommended that there should be health check across the Ogoni land. That has not been done. And it is supposed to check the health status of the people, who have had a direct relationship with the exploration or impact of the oil exploration that had gone on for long in the location. Those things have not been done. And nothing aimed at it has been put in place. And that is why we’re saying that what the government is doing amount to environmental terrorism. Because when you destroy a people’s environmental resources, thereby stopping them from getting the environmental benefits and environmental services derivable from such environment in terms of resources, then you are committing environmental terrorism. When Ken Saro Wiwa said in 1990, that what is being done in Ogoni is far worse than warfare, people didn’t understand. Because he used to say that in this ecological war against the Ogoni people, bones are not broken, blood is not spilled, so people are not seeing it happening. But when you drink poisoned water  take for instance, a pregnant woman drinks from a water that is poisoned with benzene; and the pregnant woman passes on that same water poisoned with abnormal chemical component to the unborn child in her womb, and eventually that child is born carrying that chemical component in his system; so we have a transfer of pollutant across generations. So the situation in Ogoni is a situation that is killing people installmentally. It is even worse than Boko Haram, because Boko Haram can come in here and shoot two, three or four people and destroy life and we all make a lot of noise and condemn it; but how about this one that is killing people insidiously. People are falling sick every day, and we are seeing strange diseases and medical situations every day, and yet the government is not concerned.

The Ogoni women while sharing their experiences talked about the fact that it is now hard to see women put to bed naturally, except through Caesarian Section; and the fact that Ogoni women, who naturally used to be known for their ravishing beauty are no longer beautiful. That seems to confirm your words about insidious and cross-generational pollution.

It’s a cross-generational thing. Why? We are a people that are in love with nature and live in harmony with land. For the Ogoni man, land is not just land, land is the abode of the spirits; land is the abode of our ancestors and land is where they derive their livelihood. So it is the land that they till and harvest from; therefore they worship the land and we have a ceremony that is connected with the worshipping of the land. So the land is tied to the Ogoni spirituality. And when you destroy the land, you have destroyed the people.

At the moment, the reality is such that fishing is no longer possible; and farming is near comatose, to the extent that you harvest a tuber of yam, and half of it is soaked in crude oil. What then is the source of the people’s livelihood at the moment? How do the people manage to survive?

That is what we are saying. As I said at a forum earlier, if it is where we have a serious government, this report alone would have forced this government to declare a state of emergency in Ogoni; emergency of water. It’s just like when the Fikushima nuclear disaster happened; the Japanese government had to move the people entirely from that zone, because of that crisis. Now you have a crisis that is happening to your own people and you’re not doing anything to deal with the food insecurity that is happening; you’re not dealing with the livelihood insecurity that has happened, because people’s sources of livelihood and survival has been destroyed the moment you destroy their farming system and destroy their fishing system. So you have inadvertently driven people away from their land; because the land has been so destroyed. And that is why today we have a situation of where people are described as environmental refugees because people are leaving Ogoni communities, not by choice but because they are forced to migrate out of their communities because you have destroyed their land and they have no choice but move into the urban areas, where they don’t even have any means of survival. So if you go to Port Harcourt today, who are those living in the suburbs? Who are those living in the waterfronts and water sides? Take the statistics and you’d find out that majority of those living in the waterfront and in the poor accommodation areas are the Ogoni people. And you now push them into all sorts of criminality without any means of survival. It is to me a big war. Today, the average Ogoni man can no longer go to the farm or go to the rivers to fish. Yet they don’t have the skill required to fit into those sorts of jobs that’ll guarantee good living.

Does the government engage in any kind of funding or skill acquisition to empower the people through other means?

We are not seeing that, although that is what they’ll keep saying. The Ogoni people launched a protest over 20 years ago, but we’re not seeing any definite programme targeted towards the people to address the issues that have been raised. What you can see is the government saying they are doing things across board, which is not the same thing as addressing the questions of those who have been marginalised, whose lands and waters have been destroyed; who have made enormous sacrifice during the struggle. We lost more than 2000 persons during the struggle; we lost a whole generation of leaders; and you are not doing anything specifically to compensate the people for all these losses?

At the moment, a Niger-Deltan in the person of President Goodluck Jonathan occupies the highest seat in government; how well has he attended to the problems of the region that he met on ground?

In my assessment the truth is that so much was expected from President Jonathan in terms of dealing with the issue of Ken Saro Wiwa and the struggle of the Ogoni people, because whether he likes it or not, his becoming president of Nigeria today is a fallout of the agitation against the oppression of the minorities in the country as spearheaded by the Ogoni people in the 1990s; that agitation for the protection of the environment, agitation that the corporate power and abuse should stop. He is a politician from this region and we are expecting that he would expand the frontiers of the discussion. Unfortunately we are not seeing any of that. He is not doing anything to show that he even appreciates the fact that Ken Saro Wiwa’s life was sacrificed for all of us in the Niger-Delta. We’ve not seen him demonstrate any serious intention and there have been instances. Jonathan became Acting President in 2010; that same year he hosted the 50th Anniversary of Nigeria’s independence and honoured 50 Nigerians, yet he did not deem it fit to honour Ken Saro Wiwa. We consider this a slight on not just the Ogoni people but the entire Niger-Delta. And nobody can say that Ken Saro Wiwa has not affected the shape of discourse in Nigeria. Before Ken Saro Wiwa, who was talking of environmental issues? Nobody. Who took the issue of minority people to the level that people, right up to the international community, started looking at it? Ken Saro Wiwa. By 1990-2000, the UN Working Group on Minorities commissioned a study on Nigeria on minority issues, courtesy of the fact that people like Ken Saro Wiwa were making it an issue. Now in 2014, President Jonathan again honoured 100 outstanding Nigerians, to commemorate the country’s centenary of amalgamation, and yet he did not include Ken Saro Wiwa. If he did not do it in 2010, 2014 provided another opportunity for him to correct that mistake; yet nothing happened. So what else can he tell us?

Perhaps the argument might be that Saro Wiwa was dead and gone, or that you guys didn’t clamour for him?

But some of those whom he honoured were also dead. And if we are talking about the people not clamouring, nobody clamoured for those personalities that he selected. It was purely on presidential discretion.

So what is the way forward? What is the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People doing to ensure that the implementation of the UNEP Report, which has become a reference point, does not just continue to gather dust?

As you know, interestingly, Nigeria as a nation state has acceded to several international environmental conventions. Nigeria has ratified the convention of biological diversity. She has also done the same thing with optional protocol. As a country, we have ratified all the major human rights instruments, which of course obligate Nigeria to do ABC.  The Nigerian government’s role is to protect the citizens against all abuses, whether environmental or human rights abuse. We are rights holders and we are making claims that our rights are protected under international human rights law; our environment is protected under international environmental laws; so it is now an obligation for you to respect all these agreements you have entered into, for you to be accepted in the comity of nations. Now, we as a people are not going to give up, because this report came as a result of the struggle of the people. We continue to raise our voices and shout until the right thing is done. We will continue clamouring until the recommendations in the report are implemented, and not just implemented, but in a way that meets international standards.

  • Prayer is the foundation of Aladura churches (2)

    The classic prayer

Lord’s Prayer is not a child’s prayer or mere family prayer; it is specifically and definitely stated to be the disciples’ prayer and only on the lips of a disciple has the prayer its full meaning. The Lord’s Prayer can only be prayed when those who pray it know what they are saying and they cannot know that until they have entered into discipleship.

The first 3 petitions have to do with God and the glory of God. The second 3 petitions have to do with our needs and our necessities. God is first given his supreme place and then only can we turn to ourselves and our needs and desires. The second part deals with our needs and desires. First asks for bread, which is necessary for the maintenance of life and thereby brings the need of the present to the throne of God. Second asks for forgiveness and thereby brings the past into the presence of God. Third asks for help in temptation and thereby commits all the future before the footstool of God.

In these three petitions we are taught to lay the present, past and future before the footstool of God. When we ask for bread to sustain our earthly lives, that request immediately directs our thoughts to God the father, the creator and sustainer of all life. When we ask for forgiveness, that request immediately directs our thoughts to God the son, Jesus Christ our savior and redeemer. When we ask for help for the future temptation, that request immediately directs our thoughts to God the Holy Spirit, the comforter, the strengthener the illuminator, the guide, the Guardian of our way.

In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus teaches us to bring the whole of life to the whole of God and to bring the whole of God to the whole of Life.

    Our Father in Heaven:

    Our Father:

The great value of the word Father is that it settles all relationships of this Life. 1. It settles our relationship to the unseen world. 2. It settles our relationship to the seen world. 3. It settles our relationship to one another.

    4. It settles our relationship to ourselves. 5. It settles our relationship to God.

    In Heaven:

But God is not only our Father; he is our Father who is in heaven. They conserve two great truths. 1. They remind us of the holiness of God. 2. They remind us of the power of God.

    The Hallowing of the name:

Let your name be held holy: ‘ Hallowed be your name’ hagios means Different or Separate. A person who is hagios is separate from other persons. Let God’s name be treated differently from all other names; let God’s name be given a position which is absolutely unique. In Hebrew, the name means the nature, the character, and the personality of the person in so far as it is known or revealed to us.

It really means that at such a time some will put their trust in human and material aids and defences, but the psalmist will remember the nature and the character of God; he will remember what God is like, and that memory will give him confidence.

Taking the two words together, when we pray ‘Hallowed be thy name’ it means ‘enable us to give to you the unique place which your nature and character deserve and demand.

    The Prayer for Reverence:

Reverence is the word for “ Giving to God the unique place which his name and character demand. There are four essentials in all true reverence of God. 1. We must believe that God exists. 2. We must know the kind of God he is; holiness, justice and love. 3. There must be a constant awareness of God.  4. We must show obedience and submission to God.

    God’s kingdom and God’s Will.

Let your Kingdom come. Let your will be done, as in heaven, so also on earth. (Matt. 6:10.)  Kingdom of God is central to the message of Jesus.

Mark 1:14: ‘he came into Galilee preaching the good news of the kingdom of God.  Luke 4:43; Mark 1:38: ‘ I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other cities also; for I was sent for this purpose’

Jesus spoke of the kingdom in three different ways: 1. He spoke of the kingdom as existing in the Past. Luke 13:28, Matt 8:11, He said that Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets were in the kingdom. 2. He spoke of the kingdom as Present. (Luke 17:21); ‘The kingdom of God’, he said, ‘is among you’. 3. He spoke of the kingdom of God as Future. For he taught the disciples to pray for the coming of the kingdom in this own prayer.

How can the kingdom of God be Past, Present, and Future all at one time? The Hebrew style of PARALLELISM, Hebrew language tends to say everything twice. Psalms is full of this.

God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble(Psalm 46:1).

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pasture; He leads me beside still waters (Psalm 23:1-2).

Compare this: Your kingdom come, Your will be done in earth as it is in Heaven.

Perfect definition of the kingdom of God;  “ The kingdom of God is a society upon earth where God’s will is as perfectly done as it is in heaven” To be in the kingdom is to obey the will of God. The kingdom is the most personal thing in the world. The kingdom demands the submission of my will, my heart, and my life. Hear the Chinese Christian Prayer “ Lord, revive your church, beginning with me” To pray for the kingdom of heaven is to pray that we may submit our wills entirely to the will of God.

    “Your will be done”

This represents the most important words in the world. The frame of mind and the tone of voice in which these words are spoken will make a world of difference. 1. Some people say it in a tone of defeated resignation. Some people may accept the will of God for no other reason than that they have realised that they cannot do anything else. 2. Some people say it in a tone of bitter resentment. Some may feel that God is their enemy, and yet an enemy so strong that they cannot resist. They may therefore accept God’s

Will, but they may accept it with bitter resentment and Moulding anger.

    3. Some people may say it in perfect love and Trust. They may say it gladly and willingly, no matter what that will may be. It is easy for Christians to say it like this because they can be very sure of two things about God;

    (A) They can be sure of the wisdom of God. God is the expert in life, and his

Guidance can never lead anyone astray. (B). He can be sure of the love of God. Paul said, “ He who did not withhold his own Son, but gave him up for all of us, will he not with him also give us everything else. (Romans 8:32) No one can look at the cross and doubt the love of God; and when we are sure of the love of God, it is easy to say: ‘your will be done’.

  • Walking in financial dominion!

I welcome you to the month of September. Whatever you missed in the past months, you will, this September, collect them in many folds! This is why the teaching this month is unique – Walking In Financial Dominion!

Every child of God is ordained to walk, among other high places, in financial dominion.

This heritage is established but on the following platforms:

    • Salvation: The Bible says that Christ was slain to receive for us power, riches, wisdom, strength, honour, glory and blessing (Revelation 5:12).
    • Connectivity to the Abrahamic covenant: God swore blessings to Abraham, in response to his Sacrifice on mount Moraiah(Gen. 22:18). Also, every child of God is a seed of Abraham. Therefore, everyone that is ‘born again’ is ordained to walk in financial dominion (Galatians 3:29).
    • Access to the blessing of the law: Prominent among the blessings of the law is financial dominion. As it is written: …and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow. And the LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath… (Deut. 28:12-13). But the Bible asserts that Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law to become partakers of the blessings of Abraham(Gal. 3:13-14).This is what entitles every child of God to enjoy the blessings of the law, among which is financial fortune.
    • As a member of the end-time church: The end-time church is ordained for financial dominion(Isaiah 2:2-3). In addition, according to Haggai, God will be unleashing financial fortune upon the end-time church (Haggai 2:8-9).

    THE LOVE PLATFORM

Giving is the gateway to a world of financial dominion. Luke 6:38 says: Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again. In response to our giving, the Bible says: And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work: (2 Corinthians 9:8).

However, we discover that love is what empowers us to give continuously, tirelessly and sacrificially. For example, the Bible says: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life(John 3:16).Nothing empowers giving like love. On the other hand, it is the giving grace that empowers us to command financial dominion. As it is written: But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish His covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day(Deut. 8:18).

From here, we understand that while love empowers our giving life, it is our giving that empowers us for wealth which ultimately translates to financial dominion. However, not just love, but the love of God burning in our hearts. Remember, it is the love of God that overflows through us to the world around (1 Corinthians 2:9; 1 John 3:14-18). We observe that every testimony of financial fortune is rooted in the sacrificial giving of men.

But How do we get on this platform?

First, we must recognize that Love is by choice and not by force.People choose who to love and what to love. Secondly, our love for God can be empowered by the Holy Ghost (Romans 5:5). Again, we also observe that there is the Spirit of love. Paul the Apostle said: For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but (Spirit) of power, and (Spirit) of love, and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).

This revalidates the empowerment dimension of love. From the above, we understand that it is the Spirit of love that empowers us to love God above all else, including ourselves (Mark 12:30-31).

Friend, the power and grace to access the wonders in the Word of God, are the preserve of those who are children of God. Are you a child of God? You become a child of God, by confessing your sins and accepting Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. You can be God’s child now, if you haven’t been, by saying this prayer: “Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Today, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You, for saving me! Now, I know I am born again!”

I will continue with this teaching next week. Exceeding Grace and the Unspeakable Gifts of God are your portion this month!

  • ‘Why my 30-year-old marriage is fresh’

‘Why my 30-year-old marriage is fresh’

Renowned marriage counsellor and preacher, Rev.(Mrs.) Funke Felix-Adejumo, spoke with Sunday Oguntola on her 30th wedding anniversary and sundry issues. Excerpts:

You hold women’s conference with many reporting a new level of submission they embrace after the meeting. What exactly do you do to them?

There is nothing I could have done to them; that must be absolutely God and His grace. As a woman, I believe I am raised to validate womanhood; to let the women know that they are not slaves and should not be subjugated. But at the same time, they must honour their husbands, the authorities that God has placed over their lives.

So, it is that balance that I teach. A woman can live up to the point that her husband respects her naturally. He does not see you as a liability but as a blessing. It is not every woman that a man can beat. When a man knows who you are and what you have contributed to his life, he won’t go there. And when you give him the respect that his leadership deserves, he becomes your friend literally.

To what extent do you think a woman should be submissive?

A woman should be submissive in the context of the Bible, which says to honour and respect your husband. But don’t let him make you feel small. Don’t let him abuse you physically, psychologically, financially and emotionally. And when your life is endangered, get out. You may not divorce but go out and seek for help.

It is someone that is alive that can talk about marriage. Many women have been sacrificed on the altar of marriage and it doesn’t start once. There are always signals. If a man disrespects you and slaps you while you are dating, why go into marriage with him? You can remain single for life and be safe.

A woman submits to the extent to what the Bible says. You honour your husband but you must know when the man is violating your human rights, your Bible rights. You don’t submit in the name of love until you are dead. You don’t go out to work, make money and give it to man who beats you up and sleeps around with prostitutes.

That is not submission; that is stupidity. That is foolishness and I don’t believe in that. If you are married to an ungodly man and you are dressed for service on Sunday. If he stops to ask where you are going to, I believe you don’t start picking quarrels with him. You don’t say, ‘I’m going to church and there is nothing you can do about it.’

You can’t say and do that because you are a wife. The first thing to do is to remove your hat and gear, then sit with him. Then you can say, ‘My dear, today is Sunday. I’d like to go to church please.’ He will come down because you have disarmed him. But when your life is in danger, submission at that time becomes stupidity.

But what kind of help is available these days? Should they involve the law, government or family?

To me, divorce is the last option. The Bible does not even support divorce. I don’t believe in it but there are situations where you don’t have a choice. I know because I have counselled people. No marriage breaks overnight. Every marriage goes through at least seven stages before it breaks.

Once you have noticed your marriage is becoming abusive, one you speak with him. If he doesn’t listen, get someone that is close to him. If he doesn’t listen, involve the family. If he doesn’t listen, involve the church and pastor. If he doesn’t listen, involve the traditional ruler of your town. If he doesn’t listen, involve the police.

At that point, you have tried. Some men are abusive because their wives have not stood up. They think they can just take it. If he keeps slapping you every day and you don’t talk, the eyes will soon get blind.

What have you done to make your home work?

We met 32 years ago. Next Monday (tomorrow), our marriage will be 30 years. My husband is incredibly rare. I’m telling you the truth because no liar will get to heaven. I’m well travelled but I have not met men like my husband. When we met, he told me that we must be transparently honest. That there is nothing we should not be able to tell each other. Two, that no matter what happens, we would not divorce.

Three, he said that I must not die under his shadow. That he wanted to help me to fulfil my potential that even though I’m his helper, he has chosen not to be an African husband. That no matter what I wanted to become, he would help. When he said that to me, I decided I’d do him good all his days.

One day, I said to God in the place of prayers that if he fails, God should hold me responsible. So, everything that has the signature of Felix Adejumo, he knows that all he needs to say is that I should take off. I’m so off that he would need to draw me back sometimes. God told us when we married that ‘I am in the midst of thee.’ So, even when we have misunderstandings, we are conscious that God is between us.

We are the best of friends and we are always together. We don’t even have friends outside ourselves. And in 30 years, nobody has ever settled anything. We disagree as a couple sometimes because some two years ago, our children said they wanted our kind of marriage that we don’t fight. My husband had to educate them that we also disagree on many things.

How do you juggle work with ministry, considering that you are always travelling?

Yes, we travel a lot but it just started about ten years ago. I had to wait to consolidate our marriage before I started travelling. Our kids have grown up too. When they were young, we didn’t travel. We agreed to stay at home. We have this policy in our home: God first, marriage second and God’s work third. That is the order and our children understand it.

Our children are grown up now and we are freed up a bit. My husband travels a lot too but people don’t know because he is quiet. He just sneaks in and out. He is in France, South Africa and everywhere. I go for women conferences and you know women’s meetings are always louder.

I have a very understanding husband. After the Lord Jesus, my husband is the wind under my wings. He cheers me up. We don’t spend quantity time together but we spend quality time. When I realised that the Lord has given me an itinerary ministry, we take advantage of every opportunity. We hide a lot. We go to the market together even now.

How have you kept your marriage fresh in all these years?

There was a time we were in South Africa together in one bush. Where we were you couldn’t get to except they sent you to us. So, our marriage is fresh because we service it every time. It’s been 30, in fact 32 exciting years. My husband proposed to me August 31 and I agreed September 8, 1982. We got married September 8, 1984.

One thing that has helped us is that we communicate a lot. If my husband is not in the country, we can speak 50 times a day. You won’t believe it. I’d call and say, ‘Hello darling, I’m going to the bathroom’, ‘Hello darling, what colour should I buy?’ When we are not together, we are together. He knows where I am. He knows what I’m doing and when the wind is blowing.

I know what he is doing and all that. In 30 years of our marriage, if I want to collate the number of days we didn’t pray together, it is less than one week.

    How do you achieve that?

It is always on the phones, especially when we are not together. We have our quiet time together. We lie down on the floor. We pray together every day, no matter what happens. Even when we have misunderstanding, we still pray together. I may not say Amen very well but we still pray.

Sometimes when we wake up, we can talk for two hours before we pray, especially when we have anything to resolve. My husband will say to me ‘God is not a task master. Let’s resolve this first.’ If I leave you now and you ask him some questions, he’d give you the same answers.

We are very appreciative of God and each other. We don’t take each other for granted.

If you were to change anything in you, what would that be?

I would change, though it is not possible. He is too busy. One day I said to him, ‘Darling, if the devil can repent, you would have taken him to God.’ There is nobody he gives up on. He would say let’s try again. But, me, I am different. My husband is patient a lot. I can help, but I move on quickly.

I don’t like disloyal and ungrateful people. Once I see those signals, I am off, but my husband will be like ‘He can change now, let’s try again.’ My husband taught me how to walk with God. Just looking at his Christian life inspires me.

What would be your advice to couples contemplating divorce?

Please, there is no perfect marriage anywhere. Do your best to save that home. When you divorce, it is your children that suffer most because you remove the cover of life over them and the rain of life beats them.

If you leave this spouse, do you know what the next one will be? In 30 years of marriage, I can tell you that a good marriage is expensive. So be ready to pay the price and you will be glad tomorrow. There is no marriage that is so bad that God cannot change it. Let’s go for counselling, let’s pray and let’s change.

  • Editing Nigerian editors

THE NATION ON SUNDAY of August 24 sustained the culture of wrongdoing: “It is commendable that Professor Jega has come out boldly, not only to condemn the development but assure (assure the nation) that the commission would not accept them for future elections.”

“Can we begin to have confidence on (in) INEC?”

“Some of these areas include producing enough food to feed our teaming (teeming) population.”

“Rather, the money, including the N200 million per state released for special purposes, was diverted to other uses.”  We certainly do not need the last three words in the extract, having been taken care of by ‘diversion’.

“Unless the detonating mechanism of extremist religious chauvinism is diffused….” Get it right: defused (not diffused).

“They have decided to sheath their machetes and seek vengeance no more.” Noun: sheath; verb: sheathe.

THISDAY of August 28 requires reformation of four lines: “The sources of revenue in a city like Lagos is very important.” Still on errors of attraction (more below): The sources… are.

“…business downturn resulting to (in) drive-wandering.”

“…the rapaciousness of project contractors increase (increases) the country’s debt burden.”

“Senior civil servants’ union berate junior counterparts” Inside business: union berates.

THE GUARDIAN of August 28 questioned linguistic rules on two occasions: “It’s the poet feared most, knowing fully (full) well that one of the….”

“The agitated crowd, who had been whipped to hysteria, demanded for his head.…” To avoid mayhem, delete ‘for’ from the extract.

“…and which provides a noble and humanistic framework for relations between the state and citizens in (on) our continent.”

“But in the welter of these realignment of forces…” Re-thinking development: this realignment of forces.

VANGUARD of August 28 circulated three goofs: “The fear along the room and corridor (corridors) of power of a sovereign national conference.…”

“It is not in doubt that most of the commuters in the luxurious (luxury) buses that ply.…”

“…Aba traders constitute a large proportion of the passengers on commercial aircrafts (aircraft) that fly….”

“Major reorganization of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), which may lead to mass retirement and sack of its men and officers, now looms.” Get it right: a major reorganization or major reorganizations, as context demands.

“One of the most outrageous abuses occurred.…” Spelling in the lurch: occur, occurrence, occurred.

“I do not buy the argument that the advent of electronic mails and network computers have rendered postal services absolute.” Not yet time for structural proximity: the advent of electronic mails and network computers has (not have).

“In doing this, however, he must be faithful to the mandate of the ECOWAS Heads of Government under whose platform he operates.” Agenda: on (not under) whose platform he operates

“As Nigerian editors converge in (on) Katsina for their 10th Annual Meeting.…”

“A government white paper on the demonstration….” Sheer abuse of words! ‘White paper’ is a report issued by Government to give information. Let’s respect words. After all, reporting is all about telegraphic brevity.

“UNN students union honour vice chancellor” What is happening? Sub-editors of these days show traces of illiteracy! This way: UNN students’ union honours VC

“The fact that some people eat food that does nothing for their physical well-being put them in the class of the poor.” The fact…puts.

“The richer nations who (sic) have more than enough should in this moment of great need and expectation by the poor masses (the masses are basically poor) be their brothers’ keepers.” Standard sociolinguistics: ‘brother’s keeper’—whether one or more.

“Any further discourse on it, some might say, amounts to nothing but over-flogging a dad horse.”  You flog, not over-flog, a dead horse, talking idiomatically.

“Like few (a few in this context) years ago, a life cow was allegedly buried….” ‘Life cow’ in place of ‘live cow’ portrays sub-literacy.

“Opponents of private universities claim that they will aggravate the unemployment problem in the country.” ‘Unemployment’ is certainly a problem—so why compound it by adding another ‘problem’?

“Denmark has just played an historic role in….” ‘An historic role’ is the type of expression Ndaeyo Uko calls Elizabethan English! Current syntactic trend: ‘a historic…’

“One of the enduring concerns at the workshop concerned the role and orientation of the military with regards to our democratic aspirations.” Received English: ‘as regards’ or ‘with regard to’.

“…the two ethnic rivals are now creating the impression that they are about to re-open (no hyphen) their old wounds and embark on another round of strive (strife).”

“They have in most cases remained willing collaborators in the de-politicization of the political system by acquiescing to virtually all the issues….” Get it right: acquiesce in (not to).

“And the neglect of such costs lead to political and economic imbalance that create disequilibria in the larger society.” The two verbs in this sentence (‘lead’ and ‘create’) demand singular usage to agree with ‘neglect’ and ‘imbalance.’

“The criteria for the choice of candidates was based on partisan political loyalties and ethnic considerations.” The plural of ‘criterion’ is ‘criteria’.

“NSE parleys foreign stock exchange”  ‘Parley’ takes ‘with’, if it must be used in this sense at all.

By the way, is it not amazing that some Nigerian sub-editors do not know what they ‘N’ in ‘NUJ’ represents? It is Nigeria (not Nigerian) Union of Journalists. One keeps coming across the unpardonable error in reputable newspapers and magazines.

  • How Christians can rebuild Nigeria, by NCGF

How Christians can rebuild Nigeria, by NCGF

President of the National Christian Graduate Fellowship (NCGF), Dr Samuel Itina, has challenged Christians to begin to reflect the changes they desire to see in the nation.

He stated that Nigeria will change when Christians mirror the changes they believe to take place in every sector.

Itina spoke last week at the 39th conference of the NCGF in Onitsha, Anambra State with the theme “let us rise and build”.

Addressing members of the fellowship mostly from the academic community, he lamented the precarious state of the nation.

He charged members to build “our Christian lives, fellowship, church and nation.”

On terror attacks, Itina said: “The Boko-Haram insurgents appear to be getting bolder and stronger every day.

“They pick at will any target where they destroy lives and properties. And they have advanced to the nation’s capital and are threatening to spread to other parts of the country.”

According to him, the attacks by Fulani herdsmen also call for attention.

He condemned endemic corruption as well as kidnapping, hired assassination and armed robbery, stating they threaten the existence of the nation.

Professor Vincent Anigbogu, a Professor of Analytical Chemistry for over three decades in the United States of America, said that Nigeria cannot afford to have leaders that work so hard to build and not preserve it.

Speaking on The Church and nation building, the Director of Institute for National Transformation said Nigeria needs leaders with foresight.

Anigbogu called on Christians to get involved in nation-building, warning that “If you leave God to do what you are supposed to do, you are irresponsible.”

He added that prayers won’t change principles or bring about constitutional review where necessary to foster development or change.

He advocated for adoption of biblical principles for national transformation.

Anigbogu said conscious efforts must be made to develop human capacity to produce the kind of leaders desirable for the kind of change the nation wants.

He said: “Christian leaders and followers alike must desist from running after government officials and politicians for the purpose of self gratification.”

He added: “Desist from making money your God. Christians must ensure that they discourage corruption and not fan the embers of corruption.”

  • Shun materialism, Christians urged

The word of God should be the cornerstone of the faith of believers as against miracles and materialism, the general overseer of the Grace Prevailing Assembly, Ojodu Lagos, Dr Godwin Nwachukwu, has stated.

He spoke at the grand finale of the annual Integrity Conference of the church with the theme repositioning for revival.

Nwachukwu described the state of the Christian faith today as pathetic.

Quoting copiously from 11Thessalonians 2:1-3 and 1Timothy 4, he said people no more seek God but miracles and quick-fix riches.

According to him: “What is available today is the gimmick of the devil; materialism is the bottom line. There is power tussle everywhere.

“Everyone seeks fame, power and influence, forgetting Jesus .No wonder there are iniquities everywhere and love is waxing cold. In fact, what we are seeing now is a danger sign and signs of the last days.”

The cleric proffered love as antidote to infighting and the pulling of fellow Christians down.

“What we should pray for is the capacity to withstand challenges and be kind. Let us find a common front and promise to be better. There is capacity and power in the blood of Jesus to do what we have in mind to do,” he said.

His wife, Mrs. Gloria Nwachukwu, spoke on why marriage is failing.

She said the institution is under attack because most times, it is planted in unfriendly environments.

According to her: “Marriage involves friendship love, hard work, understanding, sacrifice and denials .It is not just for anybody.

“Individuals involved must be physically, mentally, psychologically and emotionally ready. When this is done, they will be able to meet up with any challenge.”

  • Strange ‘Prophet of God’

    Strange ‘Prophet of God’

For the past 13 years this prophet has neither taken his bath nor had sexual intercourse with his wife. He said he is obeying God. Taiwo Abiodun reports.

Scattered in his room were books .Some of the books were placed on chairs, others on the table while some were lying on the floor. They were different Christian books. Among the books was a big Bible placed on his table. On the walls of the room were Christian posters for crusades and those of some religious leaders he admired. Welcome to Prophet Wale Olagunju’s abode at Sasa, Ibadan where the prophet who claimed he had not taken his bath for the past 13 years stays. He is the presiding pastor of Divine Seed of God Chapel Ministries, Ibadan.

Though Olagunju claimed he had not taken his bath since 2001 but his hair was neatly cut while his teeth were also clean. And contrary to expectation, he did not emit any foul odor. However, his toenails were shockingly unkempt and had turned brown and an eyesore. They were long and were like animal’s claws that looked frightening.

He said: “I have stopped having my bath since 13 years ago. I cut my fingernails and my hair but water must not touch my body. And I don’t smell. All are according to God’s instruction.”

This is the weird world of this 55 – year old University of Ilorin graduate.

    Background

According to Olagunju, he hails from Igbara Oke, Ondo State. He said: “My father was a retired Army officer. My parents are now late. I attended Anthony Primary School, Ede ; Government Secondary School ,Okitipupa but I completed my secondary school at St Peter’s Anglican School , Olode. I studied English at the University of Ilorin and I was among the second set. After my university education I proceeded to the Seminary Life International College of Theology.”

    His Calling

Olagunju said he was called by God. He recounted how he was called: “I received my calling in 1981/82.Then I had a lot of problems as my father had seven wives. And from that perspective, I had strong household problems.Witches were pursuing me and were troubling me, causing me to be running from one place to another seeking false solution.”

Asked whether he saw the witches physically or it was a mere figment of his own imagination, the Man of God affirmed: “No, no, it wasn’t an imagination .Yes, I saw the witches, and they were pursuing me .They would come and press me down. They were in form of human beings as they looked like mad persons and with grey hair. They wanted to kill me and I was looking for solution.”

He continued: “That was the reality on the ground and in this course I met one Prophet Bello whom somebody took me to. I told him to pray for me and he prayed for me and said I would go into ministry. He said I would be a prophet but I told him that was not my problem but that some forces wanted to kill me. But he said I should keep on seeking for His holiness, and to ask God to give me power to conquer these people. He said I should continue fasting as long as I could and I should start preaching and praying, He also said I should pray for power to carry out His job .The man of God I met added that my journey was like taking off from Lagos to Maiduguri, and that I should go slowly, and should not board any vehicle, okada, or train. He said that is my ministry.

“He added that I should stop taking my bath. That was the revelation he gave me at the Akike Mountain, Ona Ara Local Government, Ibadan. For one year I was going to the mountain on Monday and would come back on Saturday morning. Again one day, God told me that He wanted to make use of me and asked me to separate myself. He asked me not to take soft drinks, alcohol, and to stop having sexual intercourse with my wife. And above all, I should stop taking my bath until He instructed me to start again. When I received this message I became troubled for I did not see anybody but was just hearing the voice. I then began to meditate over this. I asked God to reveal Himself to me. I meditated over this and the Lord ministered to me again. Later, I just saw a man in white clothe and with white hair. I was just hearing another voice like a rushing water again saying I must not do all these.”

    Hard decision

Ölagunju said: “I was confused and full of different thoughts. I was unsure of the veracity of the messages.”

Olagunju said he went to tell the prophet on Akike Mountain that he was hearing two voices ,and he asked which one he has to obey.

He recounted further: “That was in the year 2000, but it was not until 2001 when I shared it with a friend, Reverend Ariyo. He said that was the voice of God and that I should obey .When I got home I told my wife. She agreed and asked me to do what God told me. I am always on the prayer mountain praying and seeking God’s face .Since January when I have been on the mountain, I slept at home once. That was January 1.

How he was convinced of the prophesy

Asked how he discerned God’s voice from that of the Devil, he responded: “There are two voices. Let me cite this example of that Garden of Eden: Two voices came to Adam. One said he should not eat the fruit and another said he should eat the forbidden fruit. Any voice that says don’t commit sin is the voice of God; any that says don’t obey it is the voice of the Devil. Any voice that says commit sin and God will not be angry is from the Devil. So I chose that of God and had obeyed it till now. I know the voice of the Devil and of God clearly.”

    I am paying the price

Reminded that it is unhygienic not to bath, the man of God denied and said with confidence, “If God wants to make use of somebody, a price must be attached to that. He would instruct him what to do. Look at Isaiah. In Isaiah chapter 20, God told him to walk nakedly. Look at Samson before he was born, there was a prophesy that he should not touch things that were unclean, not to shave his head or drink alcohol just because God wanted to make use of him. But unfortunately, he undermined it. Somebody who is determined to follow Christ must be ready to pay the price, he must be prepared.”

Asked whether his not taking his bath could not make him sick, he replied: “I’m even fatter than you now. Those who know me very well know that I believe in fasting and prayer and in the work of God. On the issue of the doctor saying you should bath, there is a difference between earthly doctor and heavenly doctor. Some years back, a woman came to tell me she had HIV and the child was also carrying HIV. She conducted the test, and it was true, but where the doctor ends their own work is where God’s own starts.

“There is this head of Department of Computer Science at the University Of Ibadan. She married in 1973. For about 30 years, no issue. She went to many places and hospitals and several places. She now came to Christ and not me. And I now told her if she can pray .As God Almighty lives, she conceived and gave birth to a bouncing baby boy called Gilgal. I don’t believe in advertising myself. I believe in miracle. God said signs and wonders shall follow those who believe in Him.”

The Man of God said he does not sweat so he does not have towel to mop his body .When questioned about his nails, he said: “My toenails were longer than this but they got cut off many times. However, I cut my fingernails to be clean. The Lord did not say I should not cut my fingernails.”

He, however, denied the insinuation that he is seeking for fame. He said: ” We have many occult pastors in Nigeria who deceive people .I know where I am going when I die. I am not looking for fame. We have many who called themselves pastors in Nigeria but who are not. “

    Watching television

Olagunju said he does not watch television. In his words: “I don’t watch television.” I don’t listen to radio; there is lots of mess on television. Do you want me to watch television and be seeing those girls that dance naked? Do you want to pollute me? Personally speaking I don’t watch television. But if I want to listen to radio, it is when Pastor Kumuyi is preaching. I am not saying people should not watch television, I am not saying television and radio are not good,.

    Sex life

He boasted, beating his chest, that he had stopped having sex with his wife since he had been instructed so. He said: “That is exactly what I am saying. I had stopped having sex with my wife. I know it is difficult to believe. I am not responsible to any man. They don’t believe me. My wife does not sleep here, she sleeps in her own room .For those who said they doubt me I am not responsible to them. I am not bothered since they were not there when God spoke to me.”

    Temptation

“Was he ever tempted?” The Nation asked him. He said: “On several occasions, but I thank God,temptation will surely come but the grace of God is sufficient for us .But I don’t normally go out to avoid temptation. I thank God.”

Asked about his wife, he said: “My wife is also a pastor now studying music to enhance our music ministry. She is coping; she is a human being.”

Some friends of the prophet, who came to see him when The Nation was with him, described him as a God-sent prophet. Evangelist Sanni Bakare said: “I have been with him for so many years. When The Lord calls somebody, he will attach something to it. He (Olagunju) goes to the mountain to pray always and all what he said are true.

  • Me and my strange powers -Jimoh Aliu

Me and my strange powers -Jimoh Aliu

As a television personality, Chief Jimoh Aliu, 78, better known as “Aworo”, often playing the role of a ‘Chief Priest’, is to many, an inspiration in the 1970s and 1990s. After years on the airwaves, he was honoured with a National Merit Award of Member of the Federal Republic (MFR) in December 2005. The seasoned artiste, producer, location designer, director, and make-up artist and singer, despite his list of career accolades, expressed his angst over the crisis-ridden Association of Nigeria Theatre Practitioners (ANTP). He also speaks with Taiwo Abiodun on his travails and joy among others.

HIS skin-cut hair style caught a fanciful attention. But the man himself wore an angry ambiance. Chief Jimoh Aliu, one of Nigeria’s veteran actors, widely known to have attended the elementary school for just six months and born in mystifying circumstances, has lost the glee of youthfulness. Also, the tribal marks that used to be his personal ‘trademarks’, are  now barely visible.  His  bushy hair  is now  clean shaven. Age, the unavoidable phase of life, has taken its toll. The ‘Living Legend’ is also rarely seen on the Nigerian theatre space in recent years.

In his discussion with The Nation reporter, he said it was needful for him to mellow down. He said, “after many years on the stage and having played many roles few of which are Olowo Aiye, Arelu, Chief Priest,  Brave Warrior and others, it is now time to lie low and watch others grow. And it is in this reflective mode I begin to see many things that makes my heart to bleed”.

The one-time charming, strong and energetic Aworo who  still exhibited a little bit of his witty and unrivalled cultural artistic talent said he is very angry to see some of the efforts they worked for in his own time in the industry been trampled upon by the feud within the ANTP.

Trailing the origin of the group, he said “There are some stories many don’t know about ANTP. I am not saying that I founded the ANTP. No. But it was formed by the team of the late Olimole, Hubert Ogunde., Akin Ogungbe, Ayinla Olumegbon, Oyin Adejobi, Kola Ogunmola, Duro Ladipo. Those are the ones we could call the founding fathers of Nigerian theatre industry with today is called Nollywwod.

“Back then, I was with my brother, the late Kola Ogunmola in Osogbo. Initially, there was no ANTP. We all as artistes, used to meet at a recording studio in the then Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) premises. We  used to do mostly stage plays. Then, we would cut leaves and acted as if we were in the bush. I remember the late Duro Ladipo of blessed memory when he went to London to perform. He was not allowed to play by Kuti Association  because he didn’t join their group. But when they asked him to pay before he could do anything, he did. On his return to Nigeria,  he called the others and told them of the association he saw in London and persuaded them that it was necessary for artistes in Nigeria to have their own. They agreed with him and named the group “Eight Leaders” by which time Baba Sala had been included. They then made a requisite that for anyone to join the group, he or she must pay a certain fee. It was some years later that Chief Adebayo Faleti improved on it to become the ANTP.

“At that time, we used to hold meetings at Mbari Mbayo in Abadan or in the late Hubert Ogunde’s house in Lagos or even the late Ade Love’s home in Ibadan. These were fathers our set of artistes used to see like gods. I remember we used to happily eat their leftovers. I believe that is why many of us grow to respectable old ages because we honoured and esteemed our older generation. We did not mess them as today’s generation of younger people treat their old citizens. I can recall the story of those who messed up the late Professor Adedeji of the department of Theatre Arts, University of Ibadan (UI), in 1976. The old man had called me and said there would be theatre workshop at UI, and that he wanted me to arrange for the artists to come.

“Then, there was some grants given to Nigeria to look for talented artistes. So, as part of the programme, there was need for members of the Palmwine Drinkers play. And after their play was staged at a hall in Ibadan near the Cocoa House, the play became popular and was accepted by all. But this got into their heads and the old man who brought them onto the scene was no longer revered. It pained the old man till he died.”

Jimoh Aliu, who still chants incantations, panegyrics and words laced with proverbs, said he still possess the energy that could make him talk and rehearse for hours without being tired. He said these are traits in him that he attributes to God’s glory in his life.

Still on his displeasure at what had become of the ANTP, he said “as time went on the late Duro  Ladipo was invited to come and play Sango. He was called by the late Ulli Beire when Kola Ogunmola gave an excuse that he was too busy at that time. Duro Ladipo took the part and that brought him fame. By then, Lere Paimo, aka ‘Eda Onile Ola’ was a Grade 2 Teacher using a Vespa brand vehicle then. And there was need for him to leave Oyin Adejobi. So, he went to join Duro Ladipo. However, by then also,  Obinrin Asiko, known as ‘ Iya Peju’, was under Oyin Adejobi.

“So, Professor Adedeji  then  advised us  to establish our own organisation so that government can be assisting us with grants. I then went to Akin Ogungbe to convince him of our need to establish an association, but he declined. I had the same encounter with Baba Sala who said his stand was based on not wanting to be accused of splitting ‘Eight Leaders’ group. I consulted Duro Ladipo and he asked me to put it in writing and give Pa Ogunde  who then treated me like his son. At that time, Pa Ogunde called me whenever he was travelling.

“That was why you would notice that I have not been seen as much as I used to in the Yoruba theatre scene in recent times due to many reasons. For someone like me that had acted and produced many plays such as Aworo, Yonponyonrin, Arelu, and suddenly stopped. You should know that some problems in the theatre world would inform my stepping aside. The issues are just too much and I cannot continue. You can imagine internal wrangling and animosities and a situation where an artiste would be advised not to act or participate in plays for his colleague. There are situation when some older members don’t want the younger ones to grow. No, I cannot be a party to such a system. Many people also accused and abused me for the support I gave to Comrade Victor Ashaolu, the outgoing President of ANTP after four years in office. I was maligned, cursed and called terrible names. And when I sit back to reflect, I knew this was not how our founding fathers started it. So, I am afraid of being questioned by our noble ancestors peradventure I met  them in heaven and they asked how I left the theatre world.

“However, I am back with my plays. I am now producing a film with NTA. Already, I have 28 episodes. I have just finished only 13 episodes. And yes, I want the progress of the Yoruba theatre, but  not in a situation where one man wants to impose himself on others and does not want to leave after the expiration of his term. This is not acceptable.

“So, I feel that ANTP is not growing because bluntly, Comrade Ashaolu, has been its stumbling block. His term as president expires on September 22nd and I urge him to honourably take his exit. He should obey the constitution of one term which lapses in a few days’ time. I have been vilified by many people for supporting him but unfortunately he does not respect anybody. He should not go ahead with his Kangaroo election in Ilesha claiming he was re-elected as the ANTP president for another term. This is not acceptable and I do not support it. “Therefore, I am founding a new Theatre Association of Practitioners (TAP), that will be known to Nigerians much later. I have decided to leave the ANTP to form another one. Ashaolu has become a troop-less general as he has no followers. Those behind him are unknown and unpopular artistes. All he wants is to be controlling. At my age, I can’t be tossed around like a toddler. So, he has nothing to offer any more.

“And we all know that the solution to the crisis is for Ashaolu to make a u-turn and rescind all that he had done including the Kangaroo election and his team of new regime. He should not succeed himself and remember that I had been called names because I was supporting him. What everyone now wants is a new regime since most of the artistes don’t want to be associated with him. Majority are saying that his term had expired and he should give room to another person to move the association forward”.

“I have tried my best for Ashaolu in terms of money, kindness and influence from the Yoruba monarchs to spiritual leaders from both Christians and Muslims. And I thank all them all. I have suffered for him. I know how many times my car engine knocked while defending the troubled president just for ANTP to stand”.

Chief Aliu also spoke on why theatre practitioners are not well-off as expected. He said that while many seen them on the TV screens are being rich, the reality is that “in real life, they are suffering”.

This, he attributed this to the sins they commit. He said, “Our sins as theatre artistes, are too much and that is why we are suffering. How many of our films do we sell?  Most of the artistes are too sinful. You would recall that not long ago, some artistes incurred the wrath of powerful juju on Alaba Market and on those pirating their works. Yet, the pirates didn’t die and nothing happened to them. So, we need to check ourselves because we don’t sell at all. I believe we need prayers and be corrected where we are at fault. And I can swear that I don’t commit any adulterous acts with any of the female actresses. I have never had girlfriends or concubines among them. Nobody can accuse me of such”.

The man in his seventies also spared the time to talk on his life and peculiar things about him. Starting from his hair and beard which he described as being powerful spiritually, he said he decided to cut both because “if I am angry and I put a strand into my mouth, whatever I say will come to pass. I discovered that it was too powerful. So when I went to Mecca I told God that  I have to remove it. And I did”.

On his former wife, Chief Aliu, whose eyes turned blood shot and rolling in its sockets as if in trance, said “Yes, I was the former husband of popular actress, Orisabunmi. We parted after many years of relationship on a good note. We still see and greet each other and we are not quarrelling at all. If I have plays I would still call her to locations. We met recently and exchanged greetings. We did not quarrel at all as rumours had it”.

Asked if he would reflect on his regrets in life. The old man looked-up-and-down and nodded intermittently as if wounded. When he broke the silence, he said “yes, I have regrets in life. I lost three children in three days because I did not offer some rituals or sacrifices for them because of one of the plays I was acting then. It was later I realised that there were certain verses I was adding to an incantation that should not be included. It is like using the sixth and seventh Books of Moses. A person will just go mad if he doesn’t do what he should do according to the rites. Another regret is that of my stolen film ‘Agba Aarin’ which was about to be released when it was stolen. I was devastated but I thank the then Ogun State Governor Olurin who encouraged me to repeat the film and I did. Dr Yemi Farounbi also assisted me a lot.

“Also, all my cars got damaged beyond repairs. I then began to ride on Okada. Those were my real trying periods of life. I will never forget all those travails. And now atop that, some people want to destroy our ANTP, that would just top my regrets”, he shouted.

On a brighter note, he said that he has happy moments because he is grateful to God for his life. “I never thought I could be known and excel in life. I never went to school yet I speak English very well. The the Federal Government of Nigerian and governors honoured me with  an MFR. I am a visiting Professor at the University of Jos (UNIJOS). I am the Ekiti State Cultural Ambassador and a high chief in my town, Okemesi-Ekiti. I have received many awards  from local to international, yet I spent only six months in elementary school and never went beyond that.

“Let anybody who could prove me wrong come out and say it. My father, a traditional healer, had to stop me from schooling further because I was sick and vomiting blood. So, I learnt the art of writing and others by travelling and became a walking encyclopaedia of arts and culture. When I got the MFR award I didn’t know its value  until I started sitting with the affluent like governors and eminent personalities as Dangote. I have been assisted by priests, prophets and  kings. I never thought I would build a house in my own town or in Lagos because my parents were poor. My father was over 130 years old and agile at the time he died. So, I thank God for all my achievements”.

With all that, Chief Aliu still has dreams. He wants to view the movie ‘See Paris and Die’ before his demise. He said “One unforgettable experience of my life is when I got lost in Italy. I had ÂŁ20 while in Italy and wanted to go to Paris. But I missed my way and some security officers challenged  me. I told them I was going to see my daughter but had missed the way. They stared at me and later brought some sniffer  dogs probably to check me. Rather, the dogs stopped  panting and were looking dull and inactive by my side. The security men became  confused and asked who I was. I told them I came from Nigeria and that I am an herbalist cum actor. They were afraid and asked me to go. I later joked with them that I had vowed to go to Paris as the slogan is that ‘See Paris and die’; that I wanted to see Paris and see if I would die. But they got a big surprise when their dogs became still around me.

“Another one is when I got to the point of entry in London and was asked to fill a form. I asked the officer to fill it for me that I cannot write in English. But he queried and said since I could speak English very well, I should be able to write. And after series of arguments, one of them filled the form for me and I signed and left. It surprises me too that I am fluent in speaking Englsih but lack the ability to write”.

On the current Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) that has become a global epidemic, Chief Aliu, he is also  a trado-medical practitioner and has what it takes to cure those inffected.

He said “Ebola has been around  for long. Yoruba calls it  Sonpona. So, the disease is not strange and it can be cured. In Mecca, there is  Musemuse spiritual water that pilgrims scoop and take to their respective countries. And whoever drinks it  will be well. The Western world is being deceitful to say that Africa doesn’t have potent traditional medicines that can cure illness. I can cure the dreaded Ebola if the Federal Government invites me. This disease ravaging humanity is  what we call small pox, Sonpona. In the past, we easily treated those affected in the bush. It also presents as measles in children while they are isolated or quarantined till date. I am ready to offer suggestions to assist if the FG calls me. There is cure for Ebola,” he said firmly.

He also attested to the efficacy of trado-medical medicines. He said “In my father’s time, there was nothing like  surgical operation. Today, little children are dying in the hospitals when herbs could have treated them. A long time ago, I climbed a bee hill and had advised some students to hold on to me or touch me to avoid being stung. Some yielded and others did not. Later, those that held had their hands on were not stung  by the bees!. Also on another day, a scorpion stung me. I tied the spot with a piece of cloth, made some incantations. Later, I went to the hospital and asked a nurse to give  me an injection needle. I injected myself on the punctured spot where dark poisoned blood oozed from. The hospital officials were astonished. Till date, if  someone  is afflicted with Magun, (don’t climb), I have the antidote. But if you are praying  for such a person and calling on Jesus, it will not work because God does not support adultery. So, there is need to go trado medical to show that African powers are still there and very potent”.

Lastly, he spoke on his secret of looking young. He said “At 78, I can only thank God for this. In rehearsals, I still spend hours dancing while others are already tired. And as a retired soldier having worked under the late Benjamin Adekunle and former President Olusegun  Obasanjo, whom I still hail as ‘Aare Owu’, you can imagine the kind of energy-building training I must have been given. In all, I thank God”, he said.
