Lagos PFN: Bumpy roads ahead as Davids takes over as chair

The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) in Lagos is on the verge of a significant transition as the Founding Pastor of Global Impact Churches, Rev Yemi Davids, prepares to be inaugurated as the new Chairman. The mood within the Fellowship is a mix of optimism and underlying tension. The inauguration, scheduled for August 31st, will also see the induction of other key leaders, including Rev Janet Onaolapo as Vice Chairman.

However, despite the formalities, the road ahead for Rev Davids is fraught with challenges that threaten to overshadow his tenure.

    Contentious election

The election that brought Rev Davids to this pivotal position was anything but smooth. His victory followed the annulment of the February 2024 election, which initially declared Rev Toyin Kehinde as the winner. This decision, overseen by PFN’s National President, His Eminence Bishop Dr. Wale Oke, has left several stakeholders disgruntled. Many within the PFN view Davids as an outsider, a leader imposed upon them rather than chosen through a fair process. This dissatisfaction has led to the formation of a new faction within the PFN, with plans to launch an alternative platform to challenge the existing leadership in Lagos.

Internal divisions and threat of schism

The tension within the Lagos PFN is palpable. Some leaders feel alienated, believing that Davids’ emergence as Chairman was orchestrated by a select few, bypassing the Fellowship’s broader consensus. The new faction, comprising some of these discontented leaders, is expected to launch in the coming months, potentially deepening the divisions within the Fellowship.

A source from one of the Directorates in the PFN Family said that the stakeholders in the Lagos PFN are still in shock at the role played by the National President of PFN, Wale Oke in the election of the new chairman in the state. The annulment of the first election that produced Rev Toyin Kehinde, and which was supervised by the former Southwest Chairman of PFN, Archbishop Oke is still a surprise.

A source from one of the directorates in the PFN family told The Nation that one of the contestants in the last election was not aggrieved with the PFN “Let me be honest with you. His grievance is not to the PFN as a body. I believe his grievance is towards a particular father who encouraged him to pick up the form, maybe he would not have contested. But somebody encouraged him to go ahead. So, that’s it. But I feel that this godfather that we are talking about should not continue in the body of Christ.”

The source urged the newly elected leader of the fellowship to extend his hands of fellowship to the leaders of the PFN Family in Lagos, as some of the leaders will exhibit the sit-down look syndrome. A new group had been formed already and some of the leaders in the PFN are part of the board. They are waiting to launch the group in the next two to three months. Several influential voices within the PFN have expressed their hopes on Davids’ success, while also cautioning him about the complexities of his new role.

Speaking with the Presiding Bishop, City Gate International Churches, and former Chairman of PFN Bauchi State, Bishop Dr. Robertson Ugar Akwazi, he said that the PFN is a family and whatever happens now or before is a family affair, God in His Infinite mercies at this time, decided that Rev Yemi Davis becomes the Chairman of Lagos PFN.

Also, The General Superintendent of Holy Spirit Mission, (The Happy Family), Bishop Charles Ighele, said “I normally advise ministers of the gospel of the Kingdom of God to always have 1st Corinthians 10:23 on their minds. It says that “All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient. All things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.” We should stop fighting for our rights when it is capable of bringing bad publicity to the Church of Jesus Christ.”

He stated further that, “With highly experienced servants of God like Dr. Jane Onaolapo on the new executive of the Lagos State arm of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, I think that all shall be well.”

One of the primary issues Davids must address is the apathy among many members towards the Fellowship and its activities. To overcome this, he needs to devise a strategy that unites the PFN, heals internal divisions, ensures transparency in leadership, and strengthens both financial management and membership engagement.

Ighele urged the new executives to prioritize what is beneficial for the Church over personal rights and disputes, saying, “I appeal to all who feel pained and those who feel victorious to forgive and forget. Lagos plays such a vital role in the whole world as far as spiritual matters are concerned that a highly spiritual, but earthly relevant PFN is needed at times like this. I appeal to the new leadership of PFN in Lagos State to carry the grassroots pastors and all other pillars of the Church along. I think the new president is a wise man and should therefore know what to do. I want the new executive to succeed, and I pray they succeed”.

Bishop Robinson emphasized the importance of integrity and the fear of God in leadership, saying, “My advice to him therefore is to lead and carry everyone along irrespective of previous views, opinions or support.  PFN remains a family bigger than tribal sentiment. He must therefore be seen as a chairman of all and a leader of all who lead without fear or favour.

“He must work to bring everyone to a united and strong Lagos PFN, he should see his election and elevation which was conducted by one of the fathers of faith, Archbishop- Elect Dr Emmah Isong, a man of integrity and full of wisdom, National Publicity Secretary of the PFN.

He said further, “Without doubt, we know that his election is an act of God at this season. May I use this opportunity to call on our fathers,  leaders, and brothers in Lagos PFN to give him a hand of fellowship and support, to enable him to take the PFN Lagos to a higher level with fresh insight and God’s wisdom, as I advise him to work with all irrespective of their previous standing, we must understand that a victory for one is a victory for all and a fall for one is a fall for all congratulations Lagos PFN,” he said.

    Challenges ahead

Unity and inclusivity for Rev Davids, the path forward is clear yet challenging. His primary task will be to mend the fractured fellowship, addressing the grievances of those who feel marginalized. This will require a leadership style that prioritizes unity, love, and inclusivity—values that several senior church leaders have publicly urged him to uphold.

The outgoing Chairman, Rev Enyinnaya Okwuonu, had struggled to maintain the Fellowship’s influence during his tenure, which was marked by a lack of visibility and effectiveness. Now, Rev Davids must not only revitalize the PFN’s public image but also ensure that the Fellowship’s internal politics do not derail its mission.”

    Watchful eye

As Rev Davids assumes the mantle of leadership, all eyes within the PFN are on him. His ability to navigate the complex web of internal politics, address the grievances of aggrieved members, and promote a culture of unity and inclusivity will determine the success of his tenure. The stakes are high, and the future of the Lagos PFN hangs in the balance.

In the coming months, the actions of Rev Davids and his administration will be closely watched. Will he be able to settle the rifts within the fellowship and steer it towards a more unified and prosperous future? Or will the internal divisions deepen, leading to a potential schism that could alter the landscape of Pentecostalism in Lagos? Only time will tell.

Nigeria’s salvation lies in constitutional change – Cleric

The planter, Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) Boanerges Worldwide, Prophet Adegboyega Ologbonyo, has said the salvation of Nigeria lies in constitutional change.

The cleric stated the present constitution was made for few and not all Nigerians, calling for its change for the nation to witness tremendous development.

Speaking at the funeral service in Efon Alaaye, Ekiti in honour of his late mother-in-law, Mrs Mary Abere, the cleric said God has blessed Nigeria and there is no needs for more prayers of blessings for the nation again.

He said: “I have been saying it and I will not stop but continue say it. Our  present constitution can never work for us, no matter how prayerful we are , that constitution is not for all Nigerians,  it is for few people.

“I am proposing and suggesting that they allow each state and each region to be using whatever resources they get whatever resources they get from their area to develop their place and with that, I think our country will move forward, without that and with the present constitution we are going no where as a nation.

“Let us join hands together to amend and change the constitution. I can tell you that every developed nation today, have a working constitution or laws that controls everything. If there is a system on ground, that is controlling everything , including everybody, I am very sure things will workout well.

“God has blessed this country, we don’t need to pray for blessings again. Many countries our people are running to today in the name of ‘japa’ don’t have half of what we are having in Nigeria. God has blessed us already, we just need to put some systems in place to use use the blessings to our advantage”.

He added: “But I believe we  can be agent of change. If you are clamouring for change and you are  in the shoes of the President ,what can you do to salvage the situation and make things is okay?

“Within your space, try and make a positive change . I belief if all of us can join hands in trying to make a change, this country will be better for it . It is sometimes  easy to manage poverty than wealth. A lot of us shouting, if given the opportunity to lead , they will mess up the position than  those people we are talking about.

“I think it is high time for all of us to began to work on ourselves. Everybody is shouting about hardship, even those selling locust beens, vegetable were saying US dollar is on high side against naira , I don’t know how dollar is affecting such goods.  If you look at it , sometimes, owners of fuel stations will deliberately lock up their shops claiming they don’t have fuel to sell just to punish people.

“We all have a role to play in all of these scenarios. Let the change begin from each and everyone of us. And let the government begin to orientate everyone of us. People are of the view that information from the government are usually real and mostly political. That is why people are out to protest against some policies of the government.

“The people are protesting because things are hard and by the time the situation changes for better and they heave a sigh of relief they will stop the idea of staging protest.

“The fact remains that people are just struggling to  survive and Nigerians are not that hard and insensitive, the moment they are given what they wanted they will leave and allow things to run the way they should. Let the change begin from all of us and let the government continue the orientation of the people.”

He also counselled business moguls and leading entrepreneurs in Nigeria to leave politics for the politicians.

The cleric said any big business person  who really wants to do well in his or her businesses and investments shouldn’t for any reason get involved in partisan politics.

“I am of the view that some renowned business people in the country are deeply involved in politics which may not augur well for their businesses. The should use the country to do politics.

“They should steer clear of politics. If you want to benefit from government and doing politics  ungrounded, if another government not in your party gets to power,  they will frustrate you . Late Moshood Abiola  was a successful business man until he dabbled politics all he has was ruined”.

  • CAP will address building collapse— Sanwo-Olu

CAP will address building collapse— Sanwo-Olu

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has  stated how the newly introduced Certified Accredited Programme (CAP), will curb incessant building collapse in the state.

CAP is a programme designed to include professionals in the built environment to supervise and monitor building construction in the state at no extra cost to owners and developers.

This is as the government of the state has realised that it’s staff  and regulatory agencies cannot audit building construction and ensure compliance and quality in the state. Governor Sanwo-Olu said the idea is to certify professionals who will work with government to have sanity in the sector.

Sanwo-Olu said this at the second edition of the Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA, stakeholders engagement in Lagos.

The LASBCA stakeholders engagement, which focused on the critical issue of building collapse in Lagos State, had the theme, “Professionalism Across Board in the Built Environment.”

He said: “Our urban areas are experiencing rapid population growth which places tremendous pressure on our existing infrastructural facilities.

“My administration is very passionate about ending issues of Building collapse in Lagos State and this has informed the introduction of the Certified Accreditors Programme, CAP, whereby Professionals in the built sector will be involved in both the approval processes and inspection of building projects.

“One major challenge we face as a government, is citizens strict adherence to building codes which often translates to complete disregard to building regulations by home owners and developers,” he said.

He lamented the influx of fake and sub standard building materials in the market in addition to sharp practices by some players in the sector.

He canvassed the need for the right mix of materials and

the importance of professionalism and adherence to building regulations in addressing building collapse in the state.

In his remarks the General Manager, LASBCA, Mr Gbolahan Oki, emphasised the importance of collaboration to improve the built environment in Lagos State.

Oki noted the agency had successfully reduced building collapses through its efforts.

He said the Certified Accreditors Programme was introduced by the government to involve professionals in the approval and inspection processes, and to further regulate the built industry.

The General Manager stressed the agency’s commitment to upholding high standards, safety, and innovation in the built environment.

“These positive outcomes are a testament to our efforts. Nevertheless, we acknowledge that there is always room for improvement.

“The primary goal of the CAP program is to regulate the industry in partnership with the private sector by ensuring effective supervision and monitoring of all construction sites within the state. Achieving total industry integrity requires collaborative efforts which the government alone cannot accomplish.”

He underscored the fact  that professionalism is the cornerstone of success in the built environment.

According to him this encompasses not only engineers, architects, and builders but also skilled workers such as bricklayers, carpenters, and welders.

Guinness World record breaker attributes feat to Tolaram support

Dr. Fola David, the Nigerian medical doctor, and visual artist who on Sunday, July 21 successfully broke and set a new Guinness World Record for the world’s largest painting by an individual, has expressed his gratitude to Tolaram, the Singaporean business conglomerate, for supporting him all the way in his quest to make history for the country.

David was speaking at a media presentation organized in his honour by Tolaram, at the company’s corporate head office in Lagos.

He noted with delight the unprecedented support he has received from Tolaram over the years, saying that this relationship which has been instrumental to the achievement of his dream was a journey that began nine years ago.

“I want to say a very big thank you to Tolaram for their support. The journey has been long. We all have heard about the six days that led to the creation of the largest drawing in the world by an individual, but what most people don’t know is that we’ve been on this for years, and Tolaram has been supportive all through the years”, he said.

He also expressed his gratitude to Tolaram for supporting his social cause over the years through its donations to his foundation, established to provide succor to the less privileged in society.

Commenting on his recent feat, David described it as arduous, adding that his determination to achieve the record comes from his strong desire to make sure that he expresses himself as a medical doctor and as an artist.

He said it was also from his passion for humanity, and the desire to inspire people to go the extra length.

“I want you to know that everything is possible once you set your mind to it. I want to inspire people out there to push their limit; to make sure that you don’t put yourself inside a particular box and think that this is where I have to stay, but rather say, I can go further than this. I can break these boundaries, I can do this or do that,” he said.

David’s record-breaking journey, which was proudly sponsored by Tolaram, began on July 16, 2024, at the Onikan stadium in Lagos and culminated with a triumphant closing ceremony on July 21, 2024.

Surpassing the previous record of 629.98 square metres held by Ravi Soni of India on the fourth day of his attempt, David set his sights on achieving 1,000 square metres of artistry.

His determination and unwavering commitment led him to surpass the existing record on Friday, with a final achievement of setting a new record of 1,150 square metres on Sunday, July 21.

Also speaking at the media presentation, Temitope Ashiwaju, Group Corporate Communication and Events General Manager at Tolaram commended David for his achievement and noted that his bold endeavor to break the Guinness World Record resonated deeply with the company’s values, saying that it was proud to have supported him in his quest.

“Like he had mentioned, nine years ago, the idea to break that world record was conceived and as a brand, Tolaram gave him its 100% support and has been part of this journey through the years; even while the painting was being done, we were there all together”, he said.

“Dr. Fola David not only broke records but also exemplified the spirit of overcoming challenges, which aligns perfectly with our brand. For us, we believe that there’s still more to be given in terms of creativity, in terms of our unity in diversity, and how important it is for us as a nation to come together to actually realise our dreams. All you just have to do is to conceive the idea and believe in yourself and it will be done,” Ashiwaju added.
