  • CAC to celebrate Akinosun’s retirement

    CAC to celebrate Akinosun’s retirement

    By Gboyega Alaka

The Christ Apostolic Church, Nigeria and Overseas, yesterday celebrated its retired president, Pastor Abraham Olukunle Akinosun.

In a statement signed by the church’s Director of Publicity, Pastor Ademisoye Alawode, the Chairman of the Retirement and Send-off Committee, Pastor Benson Akanmu said the committee left nothing to chance in the celebration of the president who led the church between 2011 and December 31, 2020.

During his tenure, Akinosun was able to push through a lot of reforms in the administration of the Church and the physical developments both at the Ikeji Arakeji Prayer Camp and at the General Secretariat of the Church in Ibadan.

Some of Pastor Akinosun’s lieutenants have also been paying glowing tributes to the man.

Pastor S. O. Oladele, who took over the mantle of leadership, commended Akinosun for his humility and team spirit. He said he never had cause to differ from whatever decision taken: “There was no occasion for disagreement. We made joint decisions. So, I can’t opt out of any decision taken”.

According to the General Secretary of the Church, Pastor E. E. Mapur, Akinosun did his best in improving the church far better than he met it in terms of reformation of the administrative set up and human capital development; as his tenure saw to massive retraining of ministers in the field, through Enhanced Leadership and Administrative Training.

The programme, run with the cooperation of the Joseph Ayo Babalola University (JABU), and which started from the most senior ministers of the Church has percolated down to the rank and file of the ministerial cadre of Christ Apostolic Church, Nigeria and Overseas and graduated close to 6000 ministers.

Also speaking, the Finance Director, Pastor Johnson F. Omitinde described Pastor Akinosun as a consensus builder. “He would allow everybody to contribute to debate on issues before decisions would be taken; once taken, the decision became binding on everybody”.

Pastor Akinosun’s tenure was also credited with the rapid development of the camp at Ikeji Arakeji where residential structures have sprung up within the last five years thus reducing the tension prayer tourists and participants at Church programmes used to be exposed to anytime they had programmes in Ikeji Arakeji.

In a recent chat with the Media Team of the Church, Pastor A. O. Akinosun said he was “filled with joy in his heart” that he has “been able to do the little he could to put the Church on the development track.” However, being a team player, he said whatever he was able to achieve during his leadership of the Church, the glory belongs more to his lieutenants than to himself.

  • ‘Most Pentecostal churches have their roots in Aladura Church’

‘Most Pentecostal churches have their roots in Aladura Church’

Aladura Patriarch & Primate of The Church of The Lord, The Most Rev Dr. Rufus Ositelu, speaks with Adeola Ogunlade on issues of interest to the church and nation. Excerpts:

The Church of the Lord Aladura seems to be conservative and media-shy. Is this a deliberate policy?

The Church of the Lord (TCL) worldwide was founded on May 17th, 1925 but officially inaugurated on July 27th, 1930. It is one of the foremost African Indigenous Churches, a member of the World Council of Churches (WCC), All African Conference of Churches (AACC), Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN) and of course Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

TCL is neither conservative nor media-shy. As a matter of fact we have a deliberate policy of partnering with the Media in our divine mandate to evangelise, reach out to the faithful and also advise the government on issues affecting the Polity when the need arises.

Aladura Churches have a huge image crisis with many associating them with diabolical practices. Are you worried about it and what are you doing to change the tide?

I am not worried about it because I know it is a matter of time before they come crashing like a pack of cards as some of them have done and are doing even as we speak. Anything that is not of God can never stand the test of time. You can see that the Church of the Lord is not involved in any of these alleged atrocities, even though we belong to the body of White Garment Churches. As a matter of fact, this was the major reason why God directed me to bring White Garment Churches together under one umbrella (United Aladura Churches) for the purpose of discipline and propriety.

Many don’t seem to remember the Aladura movement is responsible for Pentecostalism in Nigeria. How can the old glory be restored?

Many do not actually know the Churches behind the Great Revival of 1930. They include: Faith Tabernacle, Ibadan; The Church of The Lord, Ogere and Precious Stone Church, Ijebu-Ode.

The Faith Tabernacle later metamorphosed into different organisations, which are The Apostolic Church (TAC) and Christ Apostolic Church (CAC). To the glory of God only The Church of the Lord Worldwide that has remained as a single entity from then till now.

Unknown to many, most of the foremost Pentecostal Churches had their roots in the Aladura Churches. I enjoin the Aladura fold to remain focused, steadfast on the path of righteousness, continue to lead by Christ like leadership by examples and with time the old glory will surely be restored.

Banditry, kidnapping and criminal activities have taken over all parts of Nigeria. How can the government tackle worsening insecurity in the land?

The primary function of any government is the protection of lives and property of its citizens. Peace is cardinal for development. There can be no meaningful and sustainable development in an atmosphere devoid of peace. The pathetic state of the nation’s security remains a serious source of concern and must not be allowed to continue. The way forward is first of all a review of the country’s security architecture. A major panacea for the myriad of challenges confronting the nation is restructuring- political restructuring: parliamentary system with a ceremonial president to showcase the various cultures in the country rotational.

Five or six regional governments with regional and neighborhood policing, economic restructuring: fiscal federalism, where the regions manage their resources and only pay taxes to the Federal Government. In a nutshell we should go back to the Constitution of the First Republic and update it. It is the antidote for ensuring good governance, fairness, equity, justice, religious tolerance, and peaceful coexistence in the country.

The present presidential system is too expensive and leaves little or no room for adequate development. Under true federalism, the regional governments will be able to develop their regions at their own pace and thus generate healthy competition, where the regions will not have to go to Abuja to collect allocations.

With 2023 around the corner, are you disturbed governance seems to have taken the backseat for politicking?

Nigeria is battling with the need for a purposeful and dynamic leadership. Unfortunately the political leaders are engaged in politicking rather than ensuring good governance. The country needs leadership by example.

What would people find in the Church of the Lord Aladura that may be difficult to find elsewhere?

Our tenets and the adherence to our tenets. Our spirituality is unique. Our practices and observances cannot be found totally in any other church. It may also interest you to know that TCL not only has ordained women bishops but also ordained women archbishops. This is a major unique achievement of The Church of the Lord and we give God all the glory.

Is prayer enough to save Nigeria? If not, what else do we need to do to fix the country?

I believe strongly in the efficacy of prayer. Prayer is the master key. Jesus Himself prayed and commanded us to pray so as not to fall into temptation. Luke 21:40. However prayer alone cannot solve Nigeria’s problems. Leadership needs to be equitable and also yield to the demands of the people. You cannot be doing wrong things and expect good results. You can only reap what you sow.

We are reaping the fruits of the performance of our political leaders in the past years. Going forward the government needs to be more aggressive, proactive in its fight against corruption. Corruption in Nigeria has become endemic. It is a hydra headed monster that has eaten deep into the socio-economic and political fabric of the society

It cuts across the whole country at all levels, the federal and state governments, agencies and parastatals of government etc. I believe the EFCC and  the ICPC should be strengthened and empowered in order for them to fight corruption more effectively. More stringent measures and policies should be put in place. Perpetrators no matter how highly placed should be brought to book and prosecuted.

You are an expert in data processing and management, do you still find time to utilise your expertise in view of your spiritual responsibilities?

The world is now Information Technology driven and has become a global village. The Church cannot be an exception. My knowledge of IT has contributed tremendously to the administration and growth of the Church. It has been a great source of knowledge and impetus for the unprecedented achievements in the life of The Church of the Lord over the last twenty years. To God alone be the glory!

Nigerians deserve current predicaments – Oke

    By Oluwatomisin Amokeoja

National President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Bishop Wale Oke, has said that Nigeria is going through turbulent times because of multiple sins.

The founder of The Sword of The Spirit Ministries International spoke at a fundraising dinner of N200 million for renovation and development of the PFN Lagos State Secretariat at the weekend.

He highlighted idolatry, corruption and adultery as some of the reasons for the turmoil in the country.

“We deserve what we are going through but God of mercy will deliver us.

“I want to assure you that it shall be well with Nigeria,” Oke said.

Proffering solutions to the quagmire, he recommended: “humbling ourselves before God, fasting, prayer and registering to vote.”

He announced there would be a gathering of about 25,000 pastors at the National Stadium to seek the face of God at a yet to be disclosed date.

“The future generations will ask us where we were if we don’t fight now,” the renowned evangelist stressed

He added there will be a youth rally from 4pm to 7 pm at an undisclosed date in one of the campuses to get students involved in spiritual exercise aimed at salvaging the situation of the country.

Expressing optimism, he said: “We are trusting God that mercy will speak for Nigeria.”

He extolled virtues of the founder and General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor William Folorunsho Kumuyi, and asked the gathering to honour him with a standing ovation in absentia.

According to the Lagos PFN chairman, Apostle Eyinnaya Okwuonu, Kumuyi, who recently clocked 80, had in 2019 donated N200 million for acquisition of three apartments on the Bode Thomas axis of Lagos as Secretariat.

Oke mandated that pledge forms to realise the needed N200 million for renovation be distributed to the gathering.

Encouraging the Fellowship, General Overseer of Christ Royal Family International Church, Bishop Tom Samson, urged leaders and congregations to ensure the renovation project is executed in record time through timely donations.

Samson said: “This building must be built. We built our churches in three to four months.

“We cannot pretend to be beggars. If you are still begging, you lack the covenant

“People use finance to insult the church, not again. We don’t need any politicians. We can do this by ourselves.”

  • We are committed to end time revival-Foursquare

We are committed to end time revival-Foursquare

    By Adeola Ogunlade

The National Secretary of The Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria, Pastor Yomi Oyinloye, has restated the commitment of the church toward extending the frontiers of the gospel in cities and unreached communities across the country.

Oyinloye said this at the inauguration of Okota District and the installation of Rev Tope Oni as District Overseer.

The event was held at the church premises in Okota, Lagos.

According to him, “the church is in a decade of soaring and with the grace of God; we believe that Nigeria as a country has been chosen by God to bring about the end time revival; Foursquare is poised to be an integral part of this mandate given to Nigeria.”

He noted that the church of God is matching forward and the gate of hell cannot prevail against it. “We have a divine mandate to reach the world for Christ and we are determined to fulfill this mandate no matter the opposition.”

He pointed out that during the rebuilding of the wall of Jerusalem, there were oppositions to Nehemiah and when the temple was being rebuilt, there were oppositions to Ezra, adding that there will be Sanbalat and Tobiah  and Gehson, but God gave his servants victory.

Oyinloye reassured Nigerians that there would be an end to every problem confronting the nation.

He said “Nigerians should be hopeful and be more prayerful because ‘this is the time for us to know God.  Those who don’t know God should run to God, so that He can come and deliver them.”

He cited the Bible saying that the eyes of the Lord run to and fro in the face of the earth, looking for those who are perfect toward him that he may make himself strong on their behalf.

“This is not time to seek powerless power or give yourself to despair or do the wrong things but repent and run to the almighty God and by God’s grace, God will remember every one and turn our adversity to prosperity,” he said.

He charged ministers of the gospel to continue to open themselves to the Holy Spirit that has given them the opportunity to serve so that whatever God has for them in mission and resources, they would be able to access it.

In his words, the newly appointed District Overseers, Pastor Tope Oni said that the appointment came unexpectedly and as a great surprise, stressing that as obedience servants of God, who are completely crucified to the flesh and to the world, “we have no choice than to obey him in absolute surrender.”

He explained that “this is an extremely onerous and demanding job, and God uses us to lead and drive the all-round growth of God’s church in Okota District and as God directs us to meet the multidimensional, spiritual, emotion, material and physical needs of the brethren, and as he works through us to prepare his people for eternity.”

He said the church would build a District and churches that are strong, healthy, vibrant, with brethren living  according to the standards of God’s  of  word and walking in the fruit of the spirit, in holiness, love and unity and with the consciousness of heaven.

  • God’ll help Nigeria, Prophet Shittu assures

God’ll help Nigeria, Prophet Shittu assures

Popular and renowned prayer intercessor and General Overseer, Restoration Prophetic Grace Evangelistic Ministry (RPGEM), Prophet Samuel Shittu, has stated prophetically that Nigerians should hold their peace, pointing out that no situation is beyond God, just as he also assured that, God will rise to help Nigeria out of her socio-economic and political problems.

This was stated in a statement issued to The Nation yesterday ahead of the church monthly interdenominational 3-day prayer, fasting, vigils, praises holding on Thursday, June 24 till Saturday June 26, at Idi-Omo, Osengere, Egbeda, along Ife-Ibadan Expressway, Ibadan, Oyo State.

Shittu advised Nigerians in particular Christians to continue to lift the nation’s leadership up to God in prayers, while emphasizing that the prevailing insecurity and leadership crises in the nation would soon be resolved by an act of God.

He noted that prayers would be offered for the nation, states, individual homes, communities and the generalities, noting that God still answers prayers.

Shittu further stressed that it is true that the state of the nation is worrisome, “but my advice to all Nigerians is that we should all continue to pray for our leaders, that, God will give them the wisdom to do things right and take Nigeria out of its present security and economic challenges.”

He added that by the absolute faith in Christ Jesus, those that attend the prayer summit will receive salvation from sins, solution to sicknesses, security for the season, showers of supernatural and lots more, adding that, God will break yokes, lift burdens, prosper destinies and enlivens the spirit, soul and body of those that attend the programme.

  • Okotie: A troubadour and Myrmidon of Christ @ 62

Okotie: A troubadour and Myrmidon of Christ @ 62

    By Ladi Ayodeji

“Age is a cleansing apparatus. It provides a catharsis for the dregs of youth and infantile immaturity. As the days accumulate and the years take on a vertical tandem, the soul is released from mundane desires and propensities that are rooted in carnal thoughts, and imaginations.

It is written, “Teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. “Simply put, a numerical accountability of time fosters wisdom in the innermost recesses of our being.

Consequently, I have come to redefine my philosophical centre of gravity and embrace a transcendent equanimity. I am a better man. I am a wiser man. I am a better servant of the Lord Jesus”. – Extracted from Okotie’s birthday allocution two years ago.

I know Okotie has been Pastor of the Household of God Church for the past 34 years. His innovative presentation of the New Testament Church structure, and profound teaching have set his ministry on a pedestal from most local churches in Nigeria.

In 2003, Okotie ran for President in the philosophical political concept called, “Messianicism”. He posited that the concept of sacrificial leadership would augur well for the prosperity and unity of Nigeria.

This concept was developed and became the foundation of what he called “Aboriginal Democracy”. This informed his “letters pacifical” which he wrote to the APC and PDP IN 2019 urging them to adopt him as a consensus remedial facilitator.

The issues he raised in his letters have become the basis for the seeming fragmentation of Nigeria today. At 62, (Wednesday, June 16) we salute an icon who has demonstrated prodigious capacity in music, religion and politics. His convictions have laid necessity on him to defend and confirm God’s word with concerted bravado. Truly, he is a “troubadour and myrmidon of Christ”

  • ‘Why Nigerian youths need mind shift’

‘Why Nigerian youths need mind shift’

As the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Youth Province 3, holds its annual conference, ‘Mind Shift 2021’, at the RCCG National Youth Centre, Redemption Camp, the pioneer pastor in charge of RCCG Youth Province 3, covering the youth churches in Ogun and Ondo States, Abioye Olaoluwa, speaks with Adeola Ogunlade on the Mind shift conference, and how youths can fulfill God’s mandate for their lives.

Mindshift’ focuses on the youth: the question now is; do the Nigerian youths really need a mind shift?

The Nigerian youths and everyone require a mind shift. But the reach of the programme has gone beyond those strata. We had a full virtual programme last year and people registered all the way from the U.S., UK, Island, South Africa, and a number of European nations because everyone needs a mind shift. Everyone needs a mind shift; and what that signifies is that ‘your mind is you’ and whatever goes on in your mind determines who the person is.

Let me give you an example: if you take a glass of water and you fill it to the half; if you ask somebody what can they see? Somebody will tell you that what you have is a half empty glass of water. If you ask another person; he will say half full glass of water. The two of them are correct but their mindset is different, and the bible says in Philemon 1:14; “that without your mind will I do nothing”. So, our mind is very crucial. The same scripture says: ‘to him who is able to do exceeding, abundantly above what you can ever ask or imagine according to the power that is working inside of me.’ So, if God wants to do something and our mind cannot handle it; then it becomes a problem. A Nigerian youth environment might look the way it is, but we need to start the correction from the mind. When somebody has a mind of abundance – if you take the person to a place where there is scarcity; he creates abundance there. But, when somebody has a scarcity mentality, if you bring the person to a place of abundance, he will create scarcity. That is why you see that people steal public funds because they might be rich in their pocket but in their mind; they are poor.

With that is mind set; to what extent should the youth focus on this shift considering the socio-economic situation of the country?

Like I said, it has happened in other nations before and when we have socio-economic challenges as a country; the young people should focus on the shift – that should be the paramount thing. If you ever ask some young people; you will hear people say things like national cake – when I get there; I will eat my own. Those people are eating our money, when I get there I will eat my own. So, it tells you that such people are going through poverty of the mind thinking that public things, public funds are supposed to be consumed. So, to actually correct the socio-economic situation; we need to get the minds of the young people to have a shift. At a point in this country, we  had a governor who was in his 40s; a senator who was in his 40s and a speaker of the House of Representatives who was in his 40s. But, has it actually changed anything? So, the mind is very key and like they say, a fish is better bent when it has not become hardened. So, it is better to work on the mind for now.

You have a roll call of seasoned ministers for the programme; what influenced your choice?

When you look at the programme ‘Mindshift’, our aim is to get to all the areas where humans are actually defined. To touch them in the area of their spiritual needs; to touch the area of leadership, so that we build them to enlarge their capacity. To touch the areas of nation building and economy. To touch the areas of relationship in order to help them in expressing themselves. So, since we want to reach out to all these salient areas of life; that is something that always guides our choice of speakers. And like we have always had over the years; this year also we have an array of people. But more importantly we also focus on people that are excelling and they are people who are also saved: who are also godly. So that nobody will come and teach something that is not godly because it is the blessings of the Lord that make us rich and will not add sorrow to it.

This year’s theme is ‘Exponential’. Can you tell us more about the theme?

We are led to choose the theme exponential this year because last year our theme was ‘Buy the Future’. But, we are going exponential this year because exponential is  a raise of power. If you say two exponential three; you are saying two in three raised to the degree of three. It is the belief that whatever good that we are doing; we want everyone to take it to an exceptional level, and that is what you call excellence. So that is where the word exponential came from. In our mindset, in our creativity, in our community and our places, we want people to take it to greater heights and that is where the word exponential comes from. People should come and be impacted so that what is given unto you: you will not just maintain it, but you will begin to multiply it in an exponential manner.

In 2020, Nigerian youth in their numbers spoke their mind to power via the #ENDSARS protest. Would you say the government has responded positively to their cry?

The answer is capitally no. And, this is the first challenge concerning that protest. I don’t think the government actually listened. Because what you did not listen to, there is no way you can understand it. They didn’t listen and here lies the plight of the young people. So, trying to answer it or to provide what those youths are asking for will be difficult because when you want to do a strategic planning, there is something called the statement of the problem. If you don’t understand the statement of the problem very well, there is no way you can proffer a good solution to the problem. I think the leadership of the nation did not get the statement of the problem and that is why you will see that at a point when the police began to harass people they will be telling them – ‘you were the people who say they should proscribe us nah’; but they didn’t know those people were actually fighting for them. I think the government didn’t get the statement of the problem and I just pray that they get it right because almost a year after it still seems as if the statement of the problem is not really gotten well.

Finally, what is your message to the youths of the province and others that would be attending this programme?

For those who will be attending this programme , I will implore them not to come alone and they should bring others because when we pull all our energies together we will be able to make a great effect.

In our local parlance, the elders say that when a snake walks in isolation it becomes less of a danger to anybody. People will easily kill a snake that is just wandering; but imagine you see about five, ten snakes at the same time, the person will be left with no choice than to run. They will run away because they have put their effort together. So, they need to come with an open mind because when they come to that conference, they will first unlearn, before they will now relearn. More importantly they should go out there and put to work all the things that they will learn. And for the youths at large, I would want them to still have a strong faith that things will still turn around better. But not only the faith, they should get busy; increase their capacity, then look at non- violent means of getting everything that they need to get. But they should put themselves under an oath that whenever they have the opportunity to stand for others, they will not go the way of the people they have complained about because if we keep doing the same thing, the same way, expecting a different result – that is the definition of insanity.

Popular Rivers Pastor, Akinola, is dead

    By Mike Odiegwu, Port Harcourt

A popular pastor and General Superintendent of Redemption Ministries, Worldwide, Rev. Stephen Akinola, is dead.

Though the cause of his death could not be ascertained, it was gathered that Akinola recently went through a kidney transplant.

A former Chairman of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) and former chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Rivers State, Apostle Eugene Ogu, confirmed Akinola’s demise.

Ogu, who is the founder and General Overseer of Abundant Life Ministries, Worldwide with headquarters in Port Harcourt, described his death as sad.

He said: “Yes, it is a very sad day for the christian community. We are talking of Prophet T.B Joshua then the next thing Akinola.

In a bid to promote the quality of life of Nigerians, a non-profit organisation, Beulah World Initiative has appealed to Nigerians to avail themselves of assisting one another.

The Visional of Beulah Initiative, Mrs. Chichi Ononiwu gave this appeal at the organization’s Monthly Community and Medical Outreach held at Makoko Community, Lagos.

The programme featured free medical checkup, dispensing of drugs, donation of reading glasses, spiritual support and food items to the needy and widows in the community.

According to her, people go through a lot just to access medical care. “I have seen people suffer unnecessarily, and some people die when they don’t have to die because they couldn’t get proper health care and we want to be involved in interventions that will save lives by what we are doing.”

Ononiwu said that free medical outreach was part of our commitment toward restoring value for human life in our society, adding that most advanced countries  make sacrifices for their country to advance.

She appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to support a worthy cause by giving out the little they have, stressing that “you don’t have to be a billionaire before you can help people who are in need.”

In response to the kind gesture, a middle aged man, Pa, Akintunde Paul, said it was his first time he was benefitting from such a community outreach.

“I have eye problems. I have been given free eye glass and eye drop. If you are doing God’s work, God will bless you and the mercy you have shown us, God will show it to you,” he said.

  • How Christians, Muslims can guarantee peace in Nigeria – Martins

How Christians, Muslims can guarantee peace in Nigeria – Martins

Over the week, the Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Alfred Adewale Martins clocked 62. At the ceremony organized by the Directorate of Social Communications Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos in collaboration with Order of Knights of St Mulumba, Lagos, Archdiocese, Adewale bared his mind on life at 62, state of the nation and other sundry issues. He spoke with Adeola Ogunlade

    How was life growing up?

Growing up, there were not too many television, radio and off course no social media. We had the chance to bond with our parents as we listened to stories from our elders and we learnt the intricacies of our local languages. One the other hand, social media is valuable now to today’s children, only we need to continue to ensure that we allow those children to imbibe the right values, direct, and motivate them to use social media in a positive way. When I was growing up, teachers were so much of respected. When your teacher was coming to your house, you would rather behave yourself because our teachers were both respected by the children and their parents. They were doing their work without being harassed. Teachers faced their jobs and they gave all the commitment needed.

     Are you fulfilled?

I thank God for this. I believe one has to continue to strive and make efforts to do better than what you did in the past. It will be difficult to say I have reached a point where I can now sit down and cross my legs. Though, I have no regrets. I don’t have anything that l can say that God has not done for me. If that is fulfillment, is okay but I will continue to strive for the best.

Insecurity has become the bane of our education system in Nigeria, what is your take and possible solution?

Children today are afraid to go to school, especially in the north. The problem of insecurity has affected so many areas of people’s lives. Education is one of them. These children are being deprived of their right to education because the government has not taken care of the insecurity in our nation. If this continues without a remedy, you can imagine what this has done to a sizable number of our children. The problem of insecurity is largely affecting the children of the poor. There is a social problem we are creating for not addressing this issue. Government should take the issue of insecurity more seriously. One of the Presidential aides recently said that the government will roll out its strategy plans to tackle insecurity, we are waiting.

Do you think dialogue is the answer to some of the problems of insecurity or the implementation confab report?

I believe that the fruit of that confab was not made public in the real sense of it; there was no formal adoption of that report. However, we know a lot of the content of the report and many people actually do think that the confab has the entire elements that are necessary to overcome the problem of today. It is important in my understanding that the fruits of the confab need to be evaluated and seen again in the light of the present situation in Nigeria. I would suggest that it is reviewed to meet the demands of today.

     Is Nigeria’s unity really negotiable?

I believe strongly that the unity of Nigeria is desirable and no matter our differences, we are better together. For Nigeria’s unity to be strengthened, some of the issues that call for Nigeria’s negotiation should be addressed frontally. People will continue to question the unity of the country if the reasons for their agitation are not addressed. It is the responsibility of our leaders to listen to the concerns of Nigerians who feel strongly that the unity of Nigeria is negotiable.

If there are questions about whatever was put together at some point in time to realize a particular purpose, there is the need to do the needful and look at the whole matter once again. So, to this extent, the unity of Nigeria is desirable because we are better together in my understanding.

Should the 1999 Constitution be reviewed or be rejected out rightly?

I do not have details of the content of the Constitution as lawyers do. However, a lot of people have identified so many loopholes in this constitution and so many have their doubts whether the current review of the Constitution will satisfy the wishes and yearnings of Nigerians.

Today, there is a call for restructuring of Nigeria. Do we have a National Assembly that is willing to ensure that that is included in the Constitution? There are issues regarding state police. Do we have a National Assembly that will objectively look at the matter?  So, there are so many issues that bother the average Nigeria and the most important of all is the willingness of the National Assembly to do what Nigerians are yearning for. We must continue to express our reservations on this matter. I recall that one of the campaign promises of the ruling party was to restructure Nigeria. Today, it is sad that it is a different story, a complete reversal of what they told Nigerians. That is why people are concern whether we need to do a review of the 1999 constitution

The resources available to the government are small; do you support government massive borrowing?

Government is doing a lot of borrowing and the National Assembly is working with the executive to borrow more.  Economists said borrowing is necessary but if it is used to provide infrastructure which can be measured, seen and there for generations to come. It is necessary that the government do more cleaning up of its own expenses. Even if we need to borrow, it will not be in range that we are currently borrowing. Borrowing is necessary for any economy but the problem in Nigeria is that we have an over blotted government structure and corruption within the system is mindboggling and that makes these borrowings not encouraging to many Nigerians.

Our government is rather expensive. The Senate and House of Representatives are gulping so much money and the executive itself is gulping so much with all the different kinds of agencies and offices that are duplicated across the line.

How can the church assist the state in ensuring the stability of the nation?

What is the church? It is the moral authority that uses words of God to interface with its faithful. The word of God is the basis for our interaction. The church will continue to conscientise the faithful of our nation on the values necessary for common good. I think that if the common good is uppermost in the hearts of the people, most of the problems we are faced with will not be there. All the wastage and corruption will not be there and the welfare of the people will be uppermost in the hearts of men. The church will ensure that their faithful adhere to values that will aid common good. Our problem will be much less if the people adhere to the teaching of the word of God being taught in their churches.

CAN President recently admonish its members to defend themselves when attacked?

In principle, anyone attacked has the right to defend him or herself. Every human being has the right to defend themselves if is under attack. However, the practice of that needs to be examined before it is put to use. I hope that as people defend themselves, they must ensure they are not the aggressors. We can defend ourselves with any means available. This is the general moral principle.

Is there a spiritual dimension to the problem of Nigeria?

I guess when there is chaos or disharmony; devil cannot be far away from there. With this, we can say the God we worship is so powerful if we are ready to play our part. We live by faith and live by the principles God demands. The devil will not have the power to create chaos in Nigeria if Muslims and Christians are sticking to the teachings of their faith. They are to be blamed for our woes
