Community leader seeks revival of extended family practice

The National President of Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU), Alhaji Aliyu Uthman, has advocated for the revival of the old extended family practice in Nigeria.

Uthman gave the advice yesterday in Ilorin during the 13th Annual Ramadan Lecture organised by the Accountant of the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences, University of Ilorin, Mr Lukman Mukhtar.

He said the abandonment of the old extended family practice for the nuclear family system of nowadays as imbibed from the West, led to the growth in the number of untrained and unskilled people.

According to him, these people have now constituted themselves as security risks to their communities and the entire nation.

He urged the people of Ilorin and other communities to consider a return to the kind of communal life lived by their forebears who were always conscious of the interests of those who were less privileged around them, to ensure that everybody grew up together.

The IEDPU president recalled that in those days, it was difficult to identify children who were cousins.

He said men and women of those days regarded children, regardless of who gave birth to them, as theirs and they watched over them through the offer of consistent quality assistance in raising such children to maturity.

“It will be very rare for someone who was raised by a father or another family other than his own to act negatively to such a benefactor,” he said.

Uthman also advised Muslims to live their lives for others, saying that it is only those who do so that can be said to have truly lived.

Mallam Yusuf Olaolu-Ali (SAN) reminded children to always remember and celebrate their parents whether they are alive or not.

He likened the celebration of parents by children to sowing seeds of happiness, which would sooner or later blossom for those who sowed to reap.

  • Stop parading yourselves as Muslims

    Stop parading yourselves as Muslims

    By Segun Showunmi, Ibadan

Founder of Shafaudeen in Islam international, Prof. Sabit Olagoke, yesterday warned Boko Haram terrorists to stop parading themselves as Muslims, saying that the terrorist group were tarnishing Muslims image by doing contrary to the scriptures of Islam.

He stated that though the terrorists were called Muslim, but they have nothing to show for it.

Speaking as the guest speaker during the 4th Annual Ramadan lecture of Sport Writers Association of Nigeria, (SWAN), Oyo State Chapter at NUJ Press Center, Iyaganku Ibadan, Olagoke noted that Boko Haram were violating scripture as Islam stipulated, saying that no religion support killing and taking of another’s lives unjustly.

He said: “Those whose habit and character negate the teachings of Quran are never Muslim, even when they are fasting, they are only suffering for misconceptions, misunderstanding and they are never scripture compliance, they are only fighting on the interest of vengeance.

“Nigerian insecurity is artificially driven, whoever that hate knowledge is not a Muslim, those who says no to western education are never a Muslim.”

Olagoke, however, called on Journalists to always dwell on investigative journalism so as not to become unnecessary controversial, adding that journalists were a crucial part of a nation building.

He maintained that journalism represent light to the world so that people in darkness can be enlightened, urging them to always stand on the platform of integrity because the future of the country rest on them.

“You should not manufacture news, but rather dwell on facts and figures; objectivity should be your watchword, always lead by example.”

  • Indebtedness (2)

    Indebtedness (2)

    By Femi Abbas

As stated in this column yesterday, the intention of rectifying material indebtedness by proxy must be in the name of the debtor and the source of funding must be pure.

As for moral indebtedness, it may come in form of promise or reciprocation of good deed. In Islam, promise, especially a voluntary one is a debt, which must be paid. For instance, a deferred dowry in marriage is a debt that must be paid no matter how long it takes. Ditto the case of an orphan’s property under one’s custody which is promised to be returned. Both must be paid as at when due based on fear of Allah. There are many other forms of promises.

All these types of debts are between man and Allah. They need no witnesses except where evidence is required. The one which requires witnesses is contained in chapter 2:282 of the Qur’an. It is about money and other material matters. This verse (the longest in the Qur’an) deals extensively with the issue of indebtedness and emphasizes the documentation of such a debt between the creditor and the debtor in the presence of witnesses who must append their signature or thumb printing to the document. It does not matter whether the debt in question is between a husband and his wife or between a mother and her daughter. The intention is to create a peaceful co-existence, within the Muslim community, which no debt should interrupt. It is better not to make promise than to change one’s mind after making a promise without explaining to the person to whom promise is made.

Another form of debt is the boycott of sexual intercourse either by the husband or wife for an untenable reason. From the day a marriage is consummated a knot of legitimate sexual indebtedness has been tied. And except for a very cogent reason which must be understandable to both parties, no one of them should boycott intercourse deliberately. Ramadan fasting, therefore, or any religious activities in the sacred month should not be used as an excuse for refraining from intercourse without getting the consent of the other party. Whoever does that has deviated from the fulfilment of a major promise. And, that, in itself, is a major debt which must be paid. RAMADAN KARIM!

  • I‘TIKAF

    I‘TIKAF

    By Femi Abbas

The world’s greatest teacher, that ever live, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) will never cease to be a teacher of teachers even in death. It was he who first recognized communication as the greatest means of fulfilling temporal desire as well as attaining spiritual satisfaction. Thus, he recommended it to the Muslim Ummah.

One of the features of Ramadan fast is I’tikaf which simply means seclusion. It comes up during the last ten days of the sacred month.

Its purpose is to completely abstain from all sinful acts and enhance one’s spiritual standing. I’tikaf or self seclusion is adopted by any Muslim who wants to get closer to the Almighty Allah through the spiritual realm.

With I’tikaf, a Muslim can attain inner composure and equanimity while he is absorbed in eternal reality. For the eight years of fasting (624-632 CE that he spent in his latter period in Madinah, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) regularly observed I’tikaf in the last ten days of every Ramadan.

And, after him, his wives and succeeding companions adhered to that tradition as a means of purifying the heart and attaining peace of the mind.

I’tikaf is mostly done in the Mosque but it can also be done in a house especially by women if the house is clean and free of disturbance. While in I’tikaf the Mu’takif or recluse is expected to observe all the five daily prayers and other Nawafil (supererogatory genuflections). He is also to engage in the recitation of the Qur’an and the glorification of Allah. He seeks forgiveness and shows gratitude to the Creator and Protector of the universe for all the countable and uncountable good things of life with which he has been endowed.

While in I’tikaf, one is not expected to move around beyond the vicinity of the Mosque or house in which he is secluded. Foods and drinks are brought to him by his wife or relations. He goes to the toilet and takes bath as necessary. But he is not to go about in vehicles during the time of I’tikaf except by necessity.

I’tikaf is Sunnah (voluntary) and not obligatory for anybody. Only those who have the time and the means can go into it. Daily paid workers who must provide for their families and salary earners who are not on leave are advised not to go into I’tikaf. Wives and children must not suffer from lack of domestic provisions just because the family bread winner has gone into I’tikaf. And, women are not permitted to go into I’tikaf leaving their husbands and children at home. That can only happen with the permission of the husband.

But where a woman is unmarried or is old and has no responsibility of providing for the husband or children, she can go into I’tikaf.

People in I’tikaf can cook their foods and wash their dresses. All these must however have been taken along from home. A recluse is not supposed to break the I’tikaf by going to the market in search of needed provisions. A sick person is not expected to go into I’tikaf. But if a person suddenly falls sick while in I’tikaf, it is necessary for him to break the I’tikaf and go to the hospital. He may return into I’tikaf if he is well.

Also, if there is any emergency in the matrimonial home of the recluse or even in the neighbourhood, which requires an urgent attention, the recluse must break the I’tikaf and attend to such emergency promptly.

I’tikaf does not extend to the day of ‘Idul Fitr. It must be terminated as soon as Ramadan fast ends. A woman’s I’tikaf terminates automatically with the commencement of her menstruation. We pray Allah to accept our I‘tikaf as an act of ‘Ibadah Amin.

Nigerian Baptist Convention holds 108th session

    By Sunday Oguntola, Online Editor

Thousands will converge on the Baptist International Conference Centre (BICC) on Km 54 Lagos/Ibadan Expressway for the 108th session of the Nigerian Baptist Convention (NBC).

The convention, which holds from April 24-29 2021, has as its theme “Moving Forward: Finishing the race with joy.”

President of the NBC, Rev. Dr. Samson Ayokunle, told reporters in Lagos: “This convention is to call the attention of all the children of God to perseverance of faith and watchfulness in all things, especially in prayer and through the words of God. It is to encourage us to live by the Spirit and shun the deeds of the flesh.

“Christian life is a race. It has to be run with strict adherence to the rules of the Scriptures. The race does not stop until the final whistle which is the home call has come.”

According to him, the opening ceremony on Saturday April 24, will witness the dedication of the 37,000-seater new auditorium by 1:45pm.

He said the public session will hold from Monday to Wednesday by 3pm.

He assured: “We trust God to visit all many with his salvation and the rest of us at the convention with healings and breakthroughs.”

Ayokunle, who is also the National President of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), lamented the parlous state of economy and security in the nation.

He said it was clear even to the blind that things were not working with Nigeria, stating the convention would take out time to pray for divine interventions.

Ayokunle called on President Muhammadu Buhari to arrest the nation’s slide to anarchy, lamenting his inability to rein in herdsmen, most of whom are of his tribe was very worrisome.

“The best presently is not the best for the nation, which is not able to secure the nation. We shouldn’t deceive ourselves over the breakdown of law and order.

“I have gone with written papers to the President to call his kinsmen rampaging as herdsmen in the nation. He needs to do this because they are his people.

“If he cannot deal with them, it becomes difficult to punish other criminals across the nation.”

On the allegations of ties to terror groups against Minister for Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Ali Patanmi, Ayokunle, who is rounding off his second term as NBC President at the convention, challenged the Department of State Security(DSS) to come out clean on its findings.

“The DSS must have a file on him being a Minister. What did they find out? Are the allegations true? Should such a man like that occupy such a sensitive position? They need to let us know because the allegations are very weighty.”
