  • Our success stories with ex-drug addicts, by CADAM

The Director General of Christ Against Drug Abuse Ministry (CADAM) Dr. Dokun Adedeji has attributed the huge successes recorded with ex-drug addicts to the influence of the word and strategic rehabilitation.

He said increased exposure of inmates in the facility located at Araga in Epe, Lagos to the word of God as well as well-conceived rehabilitation structured into two phases has been giving the ex-drug addicts a new lease of life.

Adedeji spoke last week with reporters during a tour of the large expanse of the facility run by the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).

He pointed out over 1,000 ex-addicts have been fully rehabilitated and taken off the drug chain by the organisation since its establishment.

Founded in 1991, the Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), CADAM began a residential rehabilitation programme for ex-addicts with attention on treatment and care.

On why the organisation has done so well, he said: “Our programme is split into two phases. The first phase is the phase of treatment and the second phase is rehabilitation and what we try to do is when people come here, we expose them to strict secular and spiritual supports.

“They have classes they do things by themselves. They even used to cook their meals by themselves until Mummy GO visited here in 2016.

“So she saw what we were using for rehabilitation centre it wasn’t like this before it was just two blocks it was then she decide that she was going to help us.

“She began to bump in money here got and architects to design so here we are by the grace and courtesy of mummy and God we are here.”

He thanked the General Overseer of RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, for providing the large expanse of land for the facility, which used to be in Gboka, Epe.

The support of the church’s highest leadership, he stated, is critical to the successes recorded in the facility, which houses over 400 inmates.

Adedeji also pointed out CADAM has the full complement of dedicated professionals, academics, social workers, psychologists, clinical psychologists, chaplains and care-givers as well as volunteers passionate about seeing transformed ex-addicts.

Aside from heavy spiritual support, the inmates also enjoy quality talk programmes and seminars from facilitators on why they should shun drug addiction.

The facilitators, he added, also engage the inmates in vocational courses for self-sufficiency after graduation.

Many of those who passed through CADAM, he disclosed have become doctors, nurses, lawyers, pilots with some of them becoming volunteers in the centre.

One of them, Mr. Babatunde Palemo, shared how he became a facilitator after 30 years as an addict.

“I was into drugs two-third of my life and for 27 years I took cocaine, marijuana, madrax, acidi and some other drugs.

“I also took pills and if I should add all together it should be about 30 years before grace found me.

“It has been exciting because I am using my mess to pass a message, challenging so many young ones to rise above the challenge. If God could save me, he will save them too.”

He stated drug users need help and support because trying to fight is not helpful.

He said many of them are only sick and not criminals, arguing it will be an injustice punishing a sick person.

A clinical psychologist, Folorunsho Stephen, said many of the beneficiaries are taken through assessment before, during and after treatment.

“Clinical psychologists conduct assessment to actually know how involved is the person in drugs and what kinds of psychological problems they suffer from like shame, depression, anxiety, rejection etc.

“We have group therapy and individual sessions. The group therapy combines while the individual session focuses on your particular need so that we can able to channels those energies and help to solve your own need in your own way looking at your own strength and your own weaknesses,” he stressed.

  • Polls: Nigeria needs mercy, says Adeboye

The General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, (RCCG) Pastor Enoch Adeboye has appealed to Christians to pray for God’s mercy before, during and after the general elections.

Adeboye said this at the February edition of the Special Prayer and Thanksgiving service for parents, guardians, single mothers, mature youths and their families at RCCG, Throne of Grace Parish, National Headquarters, Ebute-Metta, Lagos.

He said that Christians should pray before, during and especially after the election for God’s load of mercy for hitch -free elections.

Adeboye said: “It’s an obligation and a commandment from God that we should vote.

“We are already praying as a church for mercy, we are in the mood of fasting till the end of the election.

He stressed Nigerians should not entertain any fear “because the country is in the hand of God and we have been praying for mercy and God must show us His mercy.

“People should be bold because many a times, the fear of what does not exist only comes to peoples’ mind.”

Adeboye, who spoke through the Assistant General Overseer, (RCCG) Personnel and Administration Pastor Johnson Odesola, charged candidates to educate their supporters that it is only in the atmosphere of peace that we can move forward or govern the people.

“There is no cause for fear because God has promised to give us peace but the people that are seeking political offices should preach peace instead of violence.

“Political office is not do- or- die, democracy is government of the people, for the people and by the people,” he said.

Adeboye noted that if a political office seeker fails this time, he can come back and win if he succeeds in convincing voters.

  • Unveiling the blessedness of prayer and fasting!

Welcome to another exciting week! I hope you were blessed by the last teaching. Today, we shall focus on: Unveiling the Blessedness of Prayer and Fasting!

From scriptures, we understand that prayer and fasting is an asset of inestimable value in fulfilling God’s agenda for our lives. As such, it is a non-negotiable requirement, ordained by God for us to experience specific benefits in our lives, as contained in scriptures. As it is written: Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy rearward (Isaiah 58:6-8). As we all know, every of God’s agenda is a spiritual open door which usually attracts oppositions from hell and this is why we are called to engage in prayer and fasting in dealing with such spiritual strongholds. No wonder Jesus said: Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting (Matthew 17:21; see also 1 Corinthians 16:9; 1Timothy 1:18). The above scripture helps us to know that some resistances will continue to get stronger without prayer and fasting. In order words, the siege sitting over any aspect of our lives may never move except by engaging the force of faith coupled with prayer and fasting. Remember, there is no other higher kind recognised in the Bible, other than prayer and fasting. We must, therefore, beware of selling our glorious destiny to the belly like Esau, who for a morsel of bread sold his birthright (Genesis 25:29-34).

What, then, are some of the Blessedness of Prayer and Fasting?

    • Fasting Spiritually Expedites Answers to Prayers: The Bible says: Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am… (Isaiah 58:9). Fasting facilitates speedy answers to our prayers. This is why the devil wants to keep us from praying while fasting, so as to rob us of the treasures that await us in it. However, we must get smarter than the devil by engaging with all our heart and might.
    • Prayer and Fasting Enhances Access to Divine Guidance: It is written: The Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not (Isaiah 58:11; see also Psalm 23:1). Everyone who is guided by the Lord is guided into realms of unending abundance (Isaiah 48:21; Ezra 8:21-23).
    • It Empowers us for Dominion: It is impossible to operate in the realm of power without prayer and fasting as a lifestyle. Everyone who has ever operated in the realm of power subscribed to the demands of prayer and fasting. Even Christ had no identity until He returned from a forty-day prayer and fasting expedition. David, in desperate need for power, said: O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is; to see thy power and thy glory… (Psalm 63:2-3; see also Isaiah 58:6; Luke 4:14-37). This means we cannot experience God’s power without a thirsty soul and a longing flesh.
    • Access to Outbreak of Revelations: It is the light we encounter that sets the pace for the glory we enjoy. The Bible says: Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee (Isaiah 60:1). Therefore, fasting period is not just a praying time, but a searching time. It is the time to identify materials that will help us in any area of challenge in our lives. There are things we would never get except we are looking for them in the time of prayer and fasting (2 Corinthians 4:4).
    • Access to our High Places: In concluding the benefits of fasting from Isaiah 58:6, God said: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it. That means fasting paves the way forward for us. Nehemiah fasted and received favour. He was a man without identity but succeeded in rebuilding the broken walls of Jerusalem in 52 days after he had prayed and fasted. This is a proof that fasting paves the way to our high places.
    • It Facilitates Fulfillment of Prophecy: As it is written: This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare (1 Timothy 1:18). Every prophecy must be enforced before it can be realised and one way to enforce its fulfilment is through the weapon of prayer and fasting. Moreover, every prophecy is like an open door and the Bible says: For a great door and effectual is opened unto me, and there are many adversaries (1 Corinthians 16:9). Therefore, we engage in prayer and fasting to resist every adversary that may hinder the fulfilment of prophecy in our lives (1 Kings 18:42-44).

In summary, if all these blessings accrue to us in fasting, then, it is wisdom to maximally engage in it, so we can begin to flow in the realm of glory the remaining days of our lives. This is because whatever is delivered to us this season is defined as exceeding and eternal weight of glory. Thus, you must be born again. Are you born again? If you are not, this is an opportunity to do so. Simply say the following prayer: Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Today, I accept You as my Lord and personal Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now I know I am born again!” For further reading, please get my books: Winning Prayer, Satan Get Lost, and Born to Win. • Pray for us, Femi Adesina tells Christians

The Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, has solicited prayers for believers in positions of authority to glorify God while discharging their duties.

He spoke at a special “Breakfast meeting with Adesina” organised by the Christian Press Association of Nigeria in Lagos last week.

The event tagged The Christian in Government: Issues and perspectives attracted Christians in the media.

Also in attendance were Chairman Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) Lagos Branch Bishop Sola Ore; General Overseer Faith Revival Apostolic Church, Apostle Taiwo Adenuga and President Journalists for Christ(JFC) Lekan Otufodunrin, among others.

Adesina pointed out though every governmental position portends temptations, Christians are expected to shine as light and be good role models.

He urged believers to lift up their counterparts in government to God for grace to overcome besetting temptations.

He lamented many Christians criticise believers in corridors of power but offer little or no prayer for them to remain strong in the Lord and end their journey well.

According to him: “I’m very happy when I go my church and they assure they are praying for me and that I will end well.

“This prayer gives me a lot of courage and confidence that God is with me and I will end well.”

Adesina who said his position as Special Assistant to The President does not warrant him hoodwinking Nigerians assured he has never lied on the job.

He emphasised he has never lied to Nigerians and he would not lie by virtue of his faith as a Christian, knowing that all liars will go to hell.

He also called on Christians to participate in politics, adding they would be expected to be Christ ambassadors and live above board.

He dispelled the notion Nigeria will be Islamised, assuring the nation will maintain its status quo as a secular state.

Adesina assured Nigerians that Buhari has given his words on release of Leah Sharibu, who is being held captive by Boko Haram sect for refusal to deny her Christian faith.

He reiterated the President would never renege on his promises.

“President Buhari has given his word that Leah Sharibu would be released and he would do everything he could to bring her out.  He would do it,” he stressed.

Apostle Adenuga, whose church hosted the gathering, charged church leaders to continue to preach the truth and lay off every form of compromise within the body of Christ.

“Every minister of the gospel should make frantic effort to remain forthright and committed to the task of evangelism and discipleship that will prepare men fit for heaven.

“I still live in a rented apartment. My ultimate goal is to be the most righteous, truthful and faithful pastor in the world.

“I want to invade Europe and the world with the gospel of Jesus, not just by my prayer but because of my transparent lifestyle,” he declared.

CPAN’s President Bola Adewara said the meeting was not for political discussion but to encourage Christians to participate in politics with a view to shining as light in a country enmeshed in corruption.

  • Abiara warns against election manipulation

The former General Evangelist of the Christ Apostolic Church, Pastor Samuel Abiara, has warned anyone planning to manipulate the 2019 general election to desist from such plans as the anger of God is looming on such individuals or group of people.

Abiara said this while speaking with journalists at the New Year Thanksgiving Service of Christ Apostolic Church, Agbala Itura, Ile-po, Agege, Lagos, adding that INEC should do its best to ensure free and fair elections.

He said that God is more interested in the affairs of Nigeria than any individual or political aspirant; therefore, all voters, political aspirants and their supporters should behave in civilised manner, before, during and after the elections.

“I need to also warn here, that God will not spare anybody that wants to disturb the peaceful conduct of the forth coming election, the wrath of God is looming on such individuals or group or people,” he said.

The prophet stressed that those who want to manipulate the 2019 general election should desist because God will deal with them.

He assured Nigerians that the election will be peaceful and God will choose for us the next crop of leaders that will paddle the affairs of the country in the next four years.

“The future of our dear country is colourful and great. So, Nigerians must put their minds at rest. Let us continue to pray for Nigeria and our leaders. God will never abandon our country. God is at work. God will hear whenever we pray unto him,” he said.

Abiara continued: “It is very crucial that the federal government provides adequate securities for all INEC staff, voters and observers.”

He charged Nigeria citizens all over the country to go out en mass and exercise their right by voting for the candidates of their choice.

Abiara also commended the federal government for the approval of the new national minimum wage of N30,000 or N27, 000 by President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Council of States.

“It is indeed a right step in the right direction. I also commend NLC and their leadership for the peaceful approach to get their request granted,” Abaira said.

  • St. John celebrates at 35, aims for higher heights

Members and well-wishers of St. John Anglican Church Satellite town Lagos were in joyous moods last Sunday during commencement of its 35th anniversary.

The church unveiled a logo to mark the occasion with different groups and fellowships gladly stepping forward for the momentous event.

The one-week activities marking the anniversary end today with grand finale at the church’s premises.

The guest preacher, Rev Daniel Iyare, appreciated members for their contributions to development of the church in the last 35 years.

He however said there was no time to rest on their oars, as they were still many mountains to climb.

Iyare challenged them to devote themselves deeper to fellowship to God and projects of the church for the next years to be more fruitful.

According to him: “We have done well but we cannot rest at all. There is no time to rest but to refire for more exploits.

“We have more lands to conquer, more souls to win, more landmarks to accomplish for God. As we dedicate ourselves more to Him, He will help us to move higher.”

The Vicar/Archdeacon, Venerable James Adejuwon, applauded the church for coming so far in the last 35 years.

He stated the church had so much to be grateful in terms of protection, advancement, divine faithfulness and blessings.

Adejuwon pointed out the church started out as just a parish but became an archdeacon headquarters with about 11 parishes about 10 years ago.

He expressed gratitude to Bishop of Lagos West Diocese, Rt Rev James Odedeji for his immeasurable supports in all forms for the church.

He stated grotto will be unveiled in honour of the founding canon, Rev Gabriel Olarenwaju, who served from 1984-1996.

Adejuwon revealed the church is working on a multi-purpose building with Sunday school hall, conference hall, youth chapel and guest apartments.

He further hinted locked-up shops will also be commissioned to mark the anniversary.

  • Christian lawyers to Buhari: CJN’s suspension wrong

President Muhammadu Buhari’s suspension of Justice Walter Onnoghen as Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) did not follow due process, Christian lawyers have declared.

They said the action was a flagrant rape of the nation’s constitution and carried out in bad faith.

In a statement under the aegies of The Christian Lawyers Fellowship of Nigeria (CLASFON), the body said only reversal of the suspension would serve the course of justice.

CLASFON’s National President, Arome M. Okwori, in the statement said: “CLASFON is of the considered view by the President decision, the executive arm of government under the supervision of the President has precipitated a needless constitutional crisis having regard to the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 and the principles of separation of powers and checks and balances entrenched in the said Constitution”.

The body suggested the President should have disciplined the suspended CJN instead of suspending him completely.

“The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria1999 does not make express provision for the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria but this does not foreclose the exercise of disciplinary measures including suspension of the said judicial officer pending resolution of grave moral or criminal allegations against the holder of the important constitutional office.

“The point we are making is that taking the radical step of suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria without recourse to the National Judicial Council (NJC) is a naked usurpation of the functions of that constitutional organ and a brazen violation of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which the President has sworn to protect and defend.

“The Constitution, subject to its provisions on removal of certain judicial officers, has vested the NJC with power to exercise disciplinary control over all judicial officers,” the Christian lawyers explained.

  • 2019: Only godly candidates can make a difference – Bishop Akinola

The Presiding Bishop of Rhema Christian Church & Towers Sango Ota, Ogun State Bishop Taiwo Akinola has called on Nigerians to vote for only godly characters in the forthcoming general elections.

Such candidates, he said, must have track record of competence, justice, fairness, trustworthiness and sense of accountability.

He spoke during the grand finale of the church’s annual Bethel prayer and fasting programme last Sunday.

He urged member not to sell their votes but endeavor to opt for men with credibility.

Speaking with reporters during the service, Akinola said voters must ponder very well on their individual decisions as to who and who should lead them for another period of four years.

He said: “I hereby appeal to all Nigerians who are qualified to do so to endeavor to fully participate in these forthcoming elections. The time for indifference is past.

“Ignorance is tantamount to suicide, hence we should bring ourselves to a level of critical consciousness of people and occurrences that are related to the elections.”

Akinola pleaded with Nigerians to take the forthcoming elections with all seriousness to make the right choices.

He argued the impacts of today’s choices can be far- reaching on for the oncoming generation.

According to him: “We don’t really have to be swayed by any sugar-coated mouth of any party apologetic but should stand firm to uphold what is true, right and fair to all.

“We all should remember that leopards don’t change their spots, just like the Ethiopian cannot change his skin.

“Even when bleaching agents are applied, the dark pigmentations of their native colours will still remain here and there.”

The cleric also noted party politics as currently practiced in Nigeria must no longer be strictly by primaries because party membership is actually too fluid with defections across board.

According to him: “I have keenly observed that party politics nowadays seems to blind the eyes of many card-carrying members of the respective political parties, and also deaden their consciences.

“Therefore, it is our opinion that people of goodwill should lay it to their hearts to vote for the candidate of their choices based on individual merits, irrespective of political leanings.

“We should not allow ourselves to be intimidated or manipulated by forces that are evil, wicked or greedy, as are notorious in party politics in Nigeria today.

“Rather, based on our clear and right consciences, we should vote for men/women of godly characters, competence and track records of justice, fairness, trustworthiness, sensitivity to the plight of the citizens, sense of accountability and an innate propensity for keeping promises.”

The Bishop also warned against vote-selling because “those who sell their votes should know they are not only mortgaging their consciences but also selling their future and the future of their children.

“In fact, they are also selling their moral rights to demand accountability from the political class whenever they derail and disappoint the electorates as they often do.

  • Lutheran Church to build mega convention ground in Adamawa

The Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria (LCCN) has started the process of building a mega convention ground in its home state, Adamawa.
The church which has its headquarters in Numan, in Numan Local Government Area (LGA), is to put up the convention ground structures in neighbouring Demsa, headquarters of Demsa LGA, where the church currently holds its annual convention on open grounds.
The LCCN President, Archbishop Musa Filibus, who announced plans for the new convention ground on Wednesday while delivering his welcome speech on the opening day of the 2019 Convention, said the church’s Convention Ground Committee had visited Lagos and Abuja to study how other church denominations developed the convention grounds there, to help in developing the concept of the LCCN Convention Ground.
Every year, about 600,000 worshippers attend the LCCN general convention at an open field some 44 kilometres from Yola, along the Numan-Yola highway.
The LCCN has over two million members worshipping in about 2,400 local church congregations located mostly in Adamawa, Taraba and Plateau states as well as Abuja.
Archbishop Musa Filibus who shed further light on the planned convention ground while fielding questions from newsmen after delivering his speech, said, “We’ve been meeting here for some years. Our effort is to bring it to a standard when we can use it all year round, not only this time of the year.
“Also, for the past years, the number of participants (at the annual convention) has been growing and it brought us to the decision to have a more permanent ground. We also realise that other denominations will like to use this ground. We are going to have a very beautiful edifice here that will accommodate us.”
