Developmental programme: cleric charges government to partner church

Governments at all levels have been advised to partner with the church in addressing some of the socio-economic problems facing the nation.

The Senior Pastor, Praise Arena-Kingdom Light Christian Centre, Pastor Jummy Adetoyese Olagunju, counselled at a 21-day programme tagged becoming a better you organised by the church at Le-Real Hotel, VGC, Lagos.

He said that the effort of the government in the provision of social amenities, instilling discipline, orderliness, good hygiene and neighbourliness can be strengthened through a cordial relationship with the church that has a large chunk of people who are religious and believe their clerics’ instructions as the gospel truth.

He noted that there are biblical injunctions and instructions that encourage good hygiene, clean environment, abhor indiscipline and all forms of corrupt practices which the church can help the government in disseminating.

“If you have a pool of people who are so religious and they believe what their pastors say, then government should see them as development partners,” he said.

He said, “it is not the business of the government to decide who leads a church or any other religious bodies because they are both agents working together in improving the living standards of people as well as fostering development.”

He challenged the church to move away from mere religiosity but follow strictly God’s instructions as He is no respecter of any persons, individuals, churches or communities.

  • There is hope in Buhari’s government, says cleric

The Shepherd in Charge of Celestial Church of Christ, Alpha and Omega Parish, Superior Evangelist Michael Adeusi, has appealed to Nigerians to continue to cooperate with and support President Buhari administration as it offers greater hope in 2018.

Adeusi said this in an interview with The Nation in Lagos. He said that President Buhari’s administration offers hope and a bright future for Nigeria as he is making every effort necessary to make life bearable for the people of Nigeria.

He noted that there are no perfect systems in the world but each government through its leaders makes frantic effort to address the needs of the people at every point in time.

He opined that the giant stride recorded in tackling the Boko Haram menace and fighting corruption, a major cankerworm that has eaten deep into the fabrics of our nation, is highly commendable.

Adeusi said: “I am very excited when former chief of staff and senior military officials were questioned on how they used the funds under their watch. No government since I was born has been able to dare these set of people. I believe that this administration offers a lot of hope for us.”

Although he expressed sadness over the state of the economy, he admonished Nigerians to allow the president to finish his tenure so that he can at least fulfill some of the campaign promises.

He stated that Rome was not built in a day and thus effort to rebuild broken walls may take time, and when it’s finally built everyone will rejoice.

He encouraged Christians not to relent in their prayer to God for mercy upon Nigeria.

  • Deal decisively with herdsmen attacks, counsels Atilade

Deal decisively with herdsmen attacks, counsels Atilade

The South West Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria, Archbishop Magnus Atilade, has called on the federal government to take decisive actions against the nefarious activities of armed herdsmen across the country.

Atilade said this in his New Year message to Nigerians, and claimed that churches in Nigeria are praying and working toward ensuring peace and stability in Nigeria.

He said that the unchecked activities of the armed herdsmen in Nigeria are the greatest threat to peace and stability in Nigeria in 2018.

He lamented that under the pretence of cattle herding, some armed Fulani herdsmen have legalised killing in Nigeria through consistent maiming, destroying of farmlands, and rendering thousands homeless.

He advised that the National Assembly and the state assemblies should sit and make laws that will curb the activities of the armed herdsmen.

He stated further that we need to understand where the attacks are coming from, whether they are internal aggression or external and identify their source of funding.

  • Catholic female knights join fight against rape, enlist partnership of enugu government

The fight against rape and other forms of sexual abuse has recorded a boost and became intensified, with a strong lay apostolate elite women group of the Roman Catholic Church in Nigeria, Ladies Auxiliary Supreme Subordinate Commandery, Nigeria, Knights of St. John International (KSJI), joining in the fight and enlisting the partnership of the Enugu State government with them in the fight.

To draw home their point against rape and other forms of sexual abuse, the group, led by a former Minister of State for Education and Supervising Minister for Foreign Affairs, Prof Mrs. Viola Adaaku Onwuliri, recently took to the streets by organising awareness campaign protest march along the streets of Enugu, terminating it at the Government House Enugu where they met with the deputy governor of Enugu State, during the last Supreme Subordinate Commandery (national) convention of the KSJI in Nigeria.

Happily receiving the women group at her office, on behalf of Enugu State government, the deputy governor, Hon. Mrs. Cecilia Ezeilo, represented by the State Commissioner of Gender Affairs, Hon. Mrs. Peace Nnaji, while calling on all other organisations to join in the fight against rape and other societal ills through sensitization and advocacy, promised that Enugu State government will partner with the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of St. John International in the fight against rape and other forms of sexual abuse.

Describing the Ladies Auxiliary’s war against rape as a welcomed development, the deputy governor observed rape as “the fastest rising crime in Nigeria that has caused a lot of harm to the women folk nowadays, with the most startling and alarming being the reports of certain fathers raping their daughters, brothers their sisters and the aged against minors”.

Mrs. Ezeilo said that Enugu State was also “in the forefront of the war against all forms of sexual abuse and sexual harassment”, regretting however that some victims of rape were the cause of their plight by their conduct.

She delightedly commended the Ladies Auxiliary of the KSJI in Nigeria for being in the forefront of the fight against rape.

Addressing the deputy governor earlier, Prof Viola Onwuliri, (national) President, Ladies Auxiliary, Supreme Subordinate Commandery, Nigeria, Knights of St. John International enjoined everyone to join hands to fight raping to a standstill.

Calling on the governments to protect the vulnerable ones in the society, especially children and women, the women group observed that female job seekers have most often fallen victims of sexual abuse in the hands of men who wanted to take advantage of them by using sex as a bait to offer them jobs.

Prof Onwuliri noted that raping and other forms of sexual abuse have become so rampant and worrisome that if not checked could destroy the society, hence the resolve of their group to join the fight against rape and other forms of sexual abuse.

Expressing delight at the warm reception they received from the deputy governor, Onwuliri observed that four out of every 10 female persons in Nigeria had been sexually abused.

  • ‘Remember the poor’

The Provost, Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina, Lagos, the Anglican Church, the Very Revd. Adebola Ojofeitimi, has challenged Christians to continue to remember the poor, helpless and victims of disasters and violence in our country.

Ojofeitimi said this at the Christmas Carol of Nine Lessons organised by the Island Club, Victoria-Island, Lagos.

The carol night tagged Carol of Unity and Good tidings brought together members of the club, families, friends, clerics and featured bible teachings, music, orchestra and prophetic prayers. The choir members who were dressed in English wears led the worshipers in different Christmas songs with sound instrumentalists. Leaders of the club were also on ground to take some of the songs to the admiration of the audience.  Clerics from different denomination took the lessons.

Ojofeitimi said that Christians should spread the act of love that brought Jesus Christ to the world to save the world from sin and its impeding judgment of hell fire.

He said: “Let us remember the hungry, the poor, jobless, the oppressed, the sick, the lonely, the aged, little children, the bereaved and those who know not the Lord Jesus or those who love him not and who by sin have grieved his heart of love.”

He advised that Christians must continue to light their environment with the teaching and life of Jesus, adding that “Let us continue to remind the world that Jesus is coming back again and for those that refuse his love today will end up in damnation when he comes.”

In his words, the president of the club, Mr. Olabanjo Oladapo, said that the Christmas Carol is to remind members that Christmas does not end with eating and drinking but the lessons and life of Jesus must be evident in daily living of the believer.

  • 2018 will be year of new beginning for Nigeria – Adeboye

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has assured Nigerians to keep their hope alive in God because 2018 will be a year of new and greater beginning.

Adeboye made this known at the Let’s Go-a-fishing programme organised by the church yesterday at the Centre for Management Development (CMD) ground in Ikosi, Ketu, Lagos. The programme brought together thousands of Christian faithful.

According to him, the nation’s economy had in the outgoing year gone through some turbulent times.

Adeboye declared that 2018 will be a year of blessing, greater productivity, better results and the much anticipated change that we desire as a country.

He said that God is a God of increasing progress and betterment, saying he was very optimistic that things will get better and a new dawn of breakthrough and prosperity will emerge in Nigeria.

Adeboye, who spoke through the Pastor in Charge of Lagos Province 12 RCCG, Pastor Ola Adejubee, encouraged Nigerians to cooperate with government as it implements plans and progammes for the betterment of the people.

He said that Nigerians are ready to make the necessary sacrifice for the nation to progress but they must be convinced and clear about government programmes that are geared towards ameliorating their sufferings and woes.

He charged the downtrodden and those in pain to trust God who through Jesus Christ died to offer hope to the hopeless, joy to the sorrowful and healing and deliverance to the oppressed.

  • Fuel scarcity: ‘Attempt to arm twist the government’, cleric urges

The General Overseer of the Wordbase Assembly, Humphrey Erumaka, has described the incessant fuel scarcity usually witnessed during the yuletide in Nigeria as a means of arm twisting the government into taking certain decisions and an attempt to sabotage government effort.

Erumaka made this assertion at a recent press conference held at the church auditorium on the forthcoming annual Festival of Power and Prayer Crusade scheduled for January 7 to 21, in Lagos.

According to him, “For me, I consider the recent fuel scarcity is an act of both external and internal sabotage; even those who are going on strike now should have a better time for going on strike than during Christmas.”

He said that the government should show more concern in handling the situation, as he saw no reason why there should always be a fuel scarcity during Christmas. “I feel some of the strike at Christmas is a form of hand twisting, so that whatever we ask because of the pressure of the season must be given to us.”

Erumaka, however, thinks some of the issues that led to the current fuel scarcity could have been settled long before the yuletide to make room for a smooth celebration at Christmas.

Speaking on government’s attempt at withdrawing $1 billion from the Excess Crude Account (ECA), Erumaka opined that the government must take a holistic approach in tackling the insecurity situation in the country rather than the present approach of trying to focus on the Northeast.

“I support the view that such huge amount to fight a situation that has been declared defeated is an aberration, and Boko Haram is not only happening in the Northeast. If nothing is done to arrest the situation of the Fulani herdsmen rampaging across the country – the herdsmen have killed more people in the Southeast/Southwest than Boko Haram in the Northeast, so security generally should be addressed; not one part of the country,” Erumaka posited.

He noted that the lack of a proper and standardised costing system in Nigeria is an avenue for corruption that allows for huge amounts of money to be budgeted for capital projects with little or no corresponding impact on the people.

“We are looking at N360 billion, I mean the longest bridge in China was constructed with just a little over $1billion, while the best cancer hospital in Chicago cost about $140 million. So when you talk about $1 billion, it can change this country to a large extent. So the state of the issue of security in Nigeria has more to do with will power than spending money. It is easier to spend money than to win a war,” he concluded.

  • GKS president challenges Christian on riches

GKS president challenges Christian on riches

The president of God’s Kingdom Society, Brother Godwin Ifeacho, has challenged Christians not to trust in  riches as they are temporal and would be meaningless when Jesus Christ comes.

Ifeacho made this known recently at the one-week long Christian Feast of Tabernacles organised by the God’s Kingdom Society held at the St Urhobo Square, Salem City, Warri, Delta State.

The programme brought together thousands of Christian faithful drawn from across the country which featured bible lecture, music festival, children assembly and Christian possession. Women also presented various gifts items and farm produce which included yam, rice, fish, yam powder, groundnut oil, cows, life hens, plantain, among others, to the church. The high point was the Christians possession where members from Lagos, Oyo, Calabar, Abuja, Kano, Edo, walked from Uhobo town to Sapele to Stadium Road, to Carvegina Primary School to Warri Township Stadium, and Ochuks Academy in demonstration of their faith and allegiance to the Almighty God. They danced with so much excitement across the city in their native attires, but the physically-challenged were not left out from the celebration.

He noted that many people struggle for power because they believe it enables them to do what they want in life, to live their lives on their own terms, to influence or outrightly control the behaviours of people. “When people have power, they feel they have the prerogative to make and break the rules and violate norms, without as much penalty as powerless people.”

He cited the scriptures copiously about the actions and boasting of King Pharaoh against the children of Israel when God told him to let them go of slavery.

“Those who because of their power and wealth oppose righteousness as Pharaoh did would suffer similar fate as the Egyptians in time of old,” Ifeacho said.

In her own words, the chairperson of God’s Kingdom Society, Women Fellowship, (GKS), Mrs. Helen Bazunu, charged women to continue to spread the virtues of honesty, faith, patience and love within their immediate communities

She said that families, churches and communities are torn apart when women display attitudes that are unbecoming of a virtuous woman,  noting that the world is in search of virtuous women who will exhibit the life of faith, hope and love and make peace-building and mediation their watchword.

Bazunu took at swipe at women who attend churches but they live their lives at variance with the instructions of Jesus within their communities.

She said habits such as tale-bearing, gossiping, rebellion, disobedience and ungodly dressing and comportment are characters that destroy homes, family and church which should be avoided.

Bazunu, who lamented the increasing cases of cancer among women, stressed that women must maintain a healthy lifestyle and should avoid the use of chemical creams, eye lips, and make up that are injurious to their wellbeing.

  • Encounter with fresh oil through praise!

We understand from scriptures that fresh oil (the anointing of the Holy Ghost) is the master key to a world of exploits. Also, as long as the oil remains fresh, continuous and unstoppable breakthroughs are guaranteed. Interestingly, among the mysteries in praise is an encounter with fresh oil. This is why only praiseful believers enjoy fresh oil.

Obviously, God the Anointer is also the custodian of the anointing. For instance, we saw how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him (Acts 10:38). However, the journey to having fresh oil begins with seeking access to God’s presence and there is no other way to access His presence except through praise. As it is written: Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing (Psalm 100:1-2; 92:10, 14).

This implies that we can’t access His presence by bombarding His gates with complaints and murmurings. If we must enjoy fresh oil, we must understand the protocols of how to get across to His presence. In order words, we must follow the divine protocol of giving thanks, praise and worship which ushers us into His presence where we are anointed with fresh oil. This is what makes praise a covenant platform for encounter with fresh oil.

Why do we need fresh oil?

    • To silence the enemy and the avenger: We live in a wicked world and as such it takes the anointing to stop the wicked from harassing our lives (Psalm 74:20; 1 John 5:19; Psalm 92:10).
    • To have dominion above sickness and diseases: We understand that most of the sicknesses and diseases are direct oppressions of the devil, hence; we need fresh oil to live above all manner of sicknesses and diseases (Matthew 10:1; Acts 10:38).
    • To be exempted from all the evils of the day: Fresh oil is a mark of exemption against the evil of the day. Also, Fresh oil makes you indestructible and unmolestable (Ezekiel 9:5-6; Ephesians 1:13).
    • Access to deep revelations: Every provision in scriptures is only accessible by revelation. It is by revelation we possess our possessions in Christ. If we don’t have the spiritual understanding of the scripture, we may never live to experience the benefits therein. However, through the anointing, we see what others can’t see in scriptures, thereby putting an end to every struggle of our lives.
    • Access to divine wisdom: We understand that divine wisdom is only accessible by inspiration. As it is written: All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16). This implies that God’s word is God’s wisdom in print and it takes inspiration to experience it, but praise is the facilitator of inspiration.
    • Among the content of this fresh oil is supernatural joy: Fresh oil is the custodian of supernatural joy and unstoppable gladness. On the other hand, just like there is the spirit of joy, there is also the spirit of heaviness, which is one of the devil’s acts of spiritual wickedness to put the spirit of heaviness upon a man, so as to disqualify him access to God’s presence, where his solution lies. This is because until the oil comes, the yoke cannot be destroyed. Therefore, by that oil, I decree an end to every air of depression around anyone’s life, in Jesus name! (Isaiah 61:3; Acts 2:13; 1 Peter 1:8).

However, you don’t have access to fresh oil if y)ou are not born again. Are you born again? If you are not, this is an opportunity to do so. Simply say the following prayer: Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Today, I accept You as my Lord and personal Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now I know I am born again!”  For further reading, please get my books: *Understanding the Power of Praise and Wonders of Praise.
