  • Prosperity messages killing the gospel, says Bishop

Gospel ministers must preach the undiluted word of God to get the results of the Bible’s days, Bishop of Ogori Magongo Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion, Rt. Rev Festus Davies, has stated.

He spoke at the 60th anniversary of St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church Aguda, Lagos.

Davies lamented that prosperity has become the main feature of the gospel, saying it is a misnomer that has made the church lose respect.

According to him: “The challenges the church is facing today is that the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries stood for the undiluted word of God but the present generation of churches we have diluted the word of God to the extent that everybody is now preaching what he/she likes.

“Everybody says what suits them and not what Christ stood for. Healing and prosperity in the Bible are good but that cannot be our major emphases.

‘’Once they get the gospel right, there is healing, deliverance, and breakthrough, but Christ first.’’

He went on:  ‘’So, the gospel first and all other material things will be added to you and not the other way round. How can you talk about healing when Christ has not been preached?

‘’Where do you get the healing from? And until we go back to the old time religion before we can get ourselves right.”

He noted that the body of Christ had lost its respect simply because preachers tell politicians what they want to hear instead of charging them.

He said: “The government don’t respect the church again it is because preachers tell politicians what they want to hear and after that money is given in exchange. It is not the true gospel that Christ died for.”

He urged members of St. Bartholomew to emulate virtues of the founding fathers who had laboured tirelessly to bring the church to its current status.

The Bishop, who was also the guest speaker, reminded the church of the role St. Bartholomew played in evangelising the heathens.

While encouraging the congregation not to rest on their oars, the cleric said they should make preaching of the gospel their watchword.

He charged the youths to shun laziness and remain focused in life.

The Diocesan Bishop, Lagos Mainland, Rt. Rev. Akinpelu Johnson, called on members of the church to continue in the good works they are known for.

He said: “People know of St. Barth’s Aguda and remember that Bartholomew was one of the disciples of Jesus, who went as far as India to preach the gospel.

‘’What we know of St. Barth’s is that they preach the gospel and evangelise.’’

While praying for them, the cleric admonished them to complete the new church building before the church turns 70.

The church also used the occasion to give awards to some deserving members for their selfless services.

The awardees included the longest serving Vicar and Archdeacon of the church, Ven. Ben Nwanekwu, Papa T. N. Njoku and people’s warden, Sir Henry U. Oranusi, among others.

  • ‘Why Christians should embrace Bible’

The Ondo State Area Chairman of the Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN), Prophet Zacchaeus Adeboriota, has urged Christians to embrace the Bible. He discribed the Bible as the pointer to salvation.

He said book was significant and compulsory for Christians to read daily.

Speaking during the special thanksgiving service and award of honours in Akure, Adeboriota said Christians must devote their time, talent and money to God.

The event was organised by BSN to appreciate some personalities who have identified with the course of gospel propagation.

According to the Ondo Area Chairman, who is also the Vice Chairman Western Zone of the group, BSN is a member of the World Fellowship of National Bible Societies joined together as the United Bible Society (UBS) for consultation, mutual support and action in its task of achieving widest distribution of the Holy Scriptures.

He pointed out that the Society had translated the word of God into more than 20 Nigerian languages and distributed it at affordable prices to the people.

He added that the Christian organisation carries out the assignment in partnership and cooperation with all Christian churches and related organisations.

The cleric appreciated the understanding and contribution of the national headquarters of the society, stressing that it assisted them towards the successful hosting of its National Board meeting in Ondo State recently.

He enthused that the BSN in the state was undergoing construction of a Bible House consisting of a Bible Depot and Guest House in Akure.

Adeboriota urged the awardees to identify with them on the project and any other area of interest.

Among the honourees were Revd Richard Ajiboye; Pastor Samuel Komolafe; Revd John Ayo Oladapo, Hon. Justice Cornelius Akintayo and eight others.

  • Groom children for leadership, cleric charges parents, others

Senior Pastor of Praise Arena, Jummy Adetoyese-Olagunju, has called on parents and other stakeholders to groom and nurture children for leadership positions.

Adetoyese-Olagunju spoke at a leadership programme on Eko FM in Ikeja, Lagos.

He said parents and other stakeholders have the responsibility to internalise the right values such as respect for rule of law, community service and due consideration for the plights of others as seen in prompt payment of salary, gratuity and pension, as well as pass them on to children.

He said: “When we fail to develop the leadership from childhood, the required conscience, compassion, human feelings, fairness and integrity will either be missing or inadequate.

‘’What we will see is what is prevalent in Africa today where leadership is defined by position and not by ideal values.’’

He noted that the western world has designed leadership models from the early life of children, saying “such children are made to develop the right principles and ideal values to be the standard behaviour as they grow.’’

Adetoyese-Olagunju added: “The western world designs reward system for elementary school pupils for kindness, honesty, fairness and hard-work.

‘’The weekly star awarded to children for kindness, community service, respect and valuing others, including dignity of labour.

‘’The emphasis is on values. Values drive your behaviour and guides once decisions.”

He noted that occupying leadership positions should be to serve others, not for self-aggrandisement, adding that position without service is meaningless.

He noted that research has shown that the values a child learn before age 13 determines the bulk of his or her acts at adulthood.

  • Spreading the gospel of pilgrimage

    Spreading the gospel of pilgrimage

The Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC) has toured some parts of the country to spread the gospel of pilgrimage. Sunday Oguntola reports that the Christian community is enthusiastic about making the exercise more impactful and meaningful.

Time was 9:40pm. It had been a long, hectic day. Yet when the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC), Rev Tor Uja, emerged from the office of the Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, last Wednesday, he didn’t, in the least, look tired.

Rather, he appeared animated and fulfilled. For two days, he and his team had been practically on the roads, selling the importance of pilgrimage to stakeholders in the Christian and political communities. It was a tiring exercise but one that the team carried out with excitement and convictions.

The conviction was palpable despite the physical exertion of the tour. The first part of call was Government House, Ondo State, last Tuesday where the team met with Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, his deputy Agboola Ajayi, and some members of the Executive Council.

Uja told Akeredolu God was counting on genuine Christians in authority to uphold the faith. He recalled how efforts of King James of the United Kingdom resulted to the publication of the King James Version. By commissioning a team of scholars and supporting them to embark on the project, he recalled the church got a version of the Bible out of the 3,000 versions in existence then.

He charged Akeredolu to consider how he could promote reforms and changes, saying God was counting on him to make his Christian faith speak boldly.

Settling down to the business of the day, Uja said pilgrimage is a veritable tool to redefine the image of the country and encourage Nigerians to uphold nationalism.

He also stated pilgrimage will deepen the faith of believers and enable them to become better citizens while contributing to nation-building.

Lending his voice to the sponsorship debate, the Executive Secretary said: “Churches should begin to sponsor their leaders, members and associates so that it does not look like a government affair.

“Pilgrimage belongs to the church and Christians should consider it their responsibility to pay their way down.”

He informed the governor of plans to have specialised pilgrimage for women, traditional rulers, business executives and youths to enable the groups take up interesting interactions, discussions and prayers during the exercise.

He said subsequent pilgrimages will include skill acquisition, especially in the farming exploits of Israel despite the apparent disadvantages of the Holy Land.

Akeredolu thanked the team for the visit, assuring that the state would work with churches to encourage more Christians to perform the exercise.

The governor said pilgrimage is essential to build confidence in the authenticity of the Bible as well as improve the spiritual well-being of Christians.

The team headed immediately to the ancient town of Owo for a courtesy visit to the Olowo, Dr David Folagbade Olateru-Olagbegi (111).

The palace was full of Christian traditional rulers who came to give the Olowo moral support. They came from different parts of the South West to hear the gospel of pilgrimage. The Olowo is the chairman of Association of Christian Traditional Rulers in the South West.

Uja said traditional rulers are important to God in the expansion of the Kingdom and good governance. He praised the Olowo for administering the kingdom with striking humility and the fear of God.

He called on the Olowo to consider a youth skill acquisition centre in the town for the nurturing of the younger generation so that they can learn from his legacies and achievements as a former law lecturer.

Uja said Christian traditional rulers would soon be in Israel on a pilgrimage centred around deep prayers, dialogue and interactions. “I believe we will see the lights in this nation when we do that,” he assured.

On the importance of pilgrimage, Uja said: “Every Christian leader should go to Israel at least once in a lifetime to pray and see developmental strides in the Holy Land and replicate same back home.”

The Olowo thanked the team for the visit. He assured of his support for drives to make more Christians embrace pilgrimage.

The train headed back to Akure where Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) leaders were waiting for briefing as soon as the meeting was over.

Uja walked into the hall to a warm reception. He told the CAN leaders from wards across the state that Christians must take pilgrimage more seriously. He discouraged the idea of waiting on government for sponsorship, saying the current economic downturns have almost foreclosed that possibility.

“Pilgrimage belongs to the church; government should not take it over. It is our own to own. When we take it over, we would do things differently,” he charged.

He challenged the CAN leaders to develop programmes that would stimulate interests in pilgrimage and never allow anyone to remain the same again after the exercise. “People should not just come back with gallons of water of bottles of oil. They should come back with a passion and zeal for the things of God,” he stated.

He urged many of them to consider spending their annual leave on pilgrimage, saying that would afford them the opportunity to refresh, rethink and repackage for greater exploits in their churches.

On Wednesday, it was the turn of Ekiti State to host the enthusiastic team. It firstly met with CAN leaders where challenges facing pilgrimage in the state were discussed and tackled.

The team moved to the Government House where Governor Ayo Fayose gladly asked his deputy, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, to receive the team. Uja pointed out that the church has not seen pilgrimage as a necessity.

He said the perception that the exercise must be government- sponsored is wrong and counter-productive. Government, he explained, can encourage and stimulate the Christian community, adding “it is our responsibility as a church to champion it.”

He informed that the Commission was determined to make the exercise spiritually-lifting and geared towards stimulating nationalism as well as personal transformation.

“We want you to push the church to stimulate us to do what we should do. If you leave us on our own, our weak hands become weaker but if you push us, we wouldn’t look back,” Uja appealed.

Olusola promised that the government would identify philanthropists who can sponsor people for pilgrimage. “We have many good people in Ekiti State and we only need to make out time to find them out.

“It would be our joy to partner with individuals, churches and organisations to get more people to Israel. We are committed to doing that by the grace of God,” the deputy governor stated.

  • Why Nigerians must patronise local goods, by Akande, Okonkwo, others

Nigerians must patronise local goods to aid socio-economic growth.

This was the consensus at the 18th Mike Okonkwo Annual Lecture in Lagos.

Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) president Chief Nike Akande; chairman of Erisco Foods, Chief Eric Umeofia, and Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Church (TREM), Dr Mike Okonkwo, agreed with other stakeholders that increased patronage of local goods will take the nation out of the woods.

Okonkwo, who celebrated his 72nd birthday at the event, implored Nigerians not to lose faith in the nation but encourage local manufacturers by patronising them.

This, he said, will encourage the manufacturers to do more and get more Nigerians gainfully employed.

He acknowledged that the present administration is working hard to reposition the economy but said it is also important for Nigerians to do their part by taking advantage of the campaign for made in Nigeria goods.

Speaking on the theme of the lecture, ‘Made-in-Nigeria products: The Vehicle for Sustainable Development’, Umeofia, who was the special guest of honour, urged the current administration to implement many of his laudable policies.

He said implementation remained an albatross for the growth of local entrepreneurs.

Umeofia lamented that the difficulties in accessing Forex by local manufacturers remained a stumbling block.

He advised the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to change its approach on FX distribution as the present arrangement favours importers instead of local manufacturers.

He also called on the government to develop infrastructure if it is actually serious about its diversification agenda.

The guest lecturer, Akande, said the current administration’s efforts at developing local industry are actually yielding fruits but pointed out that there are still rooms for improvement.

The former Minister of Industry said Nigerians must also set their priorities if they want the economy to develop.

“When you buy made-in-Nigeria, you are promoting local economic growth which will attract new talents and professionals, who may, in turn, create businesses of their own, enhancing the domestic economy,” she stressed.

She cited the cement industry pioneered by Dangote Cement as well as Innoson Plc already exporting made-in Nigeria products to neighbouring countries.

According to her, there are other inclusive ways to achieve sustainable development without building the right economic foundation of patronising made-in-Nigeria goods and services.

Miss Alexander Nwigwe of Vivian Fowler Memorial College, Lagos, was the overall best student of the 14th edition of Mike Okonkwo National Essay for Secondary Schools.

She went home with N100, 000 while the school got two desktop computers.

Miss Jesuduntan Mercy of Corona Secondary School, Lagos, was second.

She got N75, 000 and a desktop computer, while Master Akingbade Gbenga of Emerald High School was third.

He won N50, 000 and a desktop for his school.

The 4th-10th position winners received a consolation cash of N20, 000 and a certificate of participation each.

  • Lagos CPFN gets new exco

Christian Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (CPFN) in Lagos State has a new chairman.

He is Pastor Stephen Obisesan (JP).

Obisesan was inaugurated recently with newly elected executives of the body at The Apostolic Church LAWNA Territory, Ketu.

Ministering at the inauguration, the national president of CPFN, Pastor Abraham Akinosun, said Christians must do more to expand the Kingdom of God in the nation.

Akinosun, who is also the President of Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), said Christianity had done so much for Nigeria in terms of educational advancement, reforms and medical interventions.

Churches, he noted, have built schools, hospitals, elderly homes and other charitable institutions in remotest parts of the nation without financial motivations.

Such acts, he said, must be sustained and expanded for the faith to remain relevant across the nation.

Akinosun, who was represented by the National Secretary of CAC, Pastor Olaniyi Yusuf, said: “We have to be more productive, abounding in the good works of faith.

“God has placed a mandate on us to do much more because there are ever increasing demands and challenges facing communities and individuals.”

He said churches must stop the practice of keeping funds in banks instead of investing in community initiatives.

Akinosun also charged men of God to avoid ostentatious living, saying “ministers should not amass wealth for themselves but focus primarily on saving souls.”

The service also witnessed appreciation of immediate executives of the body for their meritorious services as well as conferment of awards on deserving leaders of the bloc.

  • Adeboye urges govt, ASUU to sheathe sword

The General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God(RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has pleaded with the federal government and the   Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to resolve their differences in students’ interest.

He lamented that the more the strike is prolonged, the more the economy and the development of the country are threatened.

Adeboye spoke last Sunday during his 50th wedding anniversary.

At the service which held at the national headquarters of the RCCG in Lagos, Adeboye prayed for families, bachelors and spinsters.

Speaking through the Assistant General Overseer, Administration and Personnel, Pastor Johnson Odesola, he said there are urgent needs for the federal government and ASUU to reach a consensus immediately.

Education, he said, is the life wire of every successful nation, warning that not only the students but also the future of the nation are at the receiving end of the industrial action.

Adeboye said: “Higher institutions of learning are where learning takes place to bring development to any country.

“Therefore, continual strike will only continue to aggravate the chaos that would eventually lead to retrogression.”

Calling for a truce, he said: “I plead with the federal government to realise that education is the live wire of this great country and to the best of its ability accede to the demands of ASUU while ASUU too should be very considerate with its demands, knowing the present state of the country and that of the economy.”

Adeboye also said it was high time the problem of Fulani herdsmen was tackled once and for all.

He lamented the pains Fulani herdsmen have inflicted on families and wondered whether those that had brought sorrow to many homes in the country were really Fulani herdsmen.

“Fulani herdsmen that we used to know in those days were simply armed with staff, bottled water and were very friendly anywhere they went.

“The present-day Fulani herdsmen go about with AK 47 rifle, maiming and killing and Nigerians are wondering who the collaborators are that had been supplying them with such sophisticated weapons and for what reasons.”

Adeboye emphasised the importance of love in families, saying similar gesture should be applied by the leadership in the nation to every segment of the country for peace to reign everywhere.

  • Is there no balm in Gilead?

Without any doubt, health stands out as the greatest asset of life. When a man’s health is challenged, everything he has loses value. That is why the world says, ‘Health is wealth.’ In the world today, healthcare is one of the most costly services; that is why God is visiting us with free health and cure this month.  As it is written: Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them, and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth. And I will cause the captivity of Judah and the captivity of Israel to return, and will build them, as at the first (Jeremiah 33:6-7).

Let us recognise that God does not want us to be only spiritually robust; but also physically, mentally, psychologically and emotionally healthy (3 John 1:2).When we are hurt, God is hurt (Jeremiah 8:21-22); because He had already fully paid the price for our total health (Isaiah 53: 4-5). Remember, we have been bought with a price; therefore, we must glorify God in our bodies (1 Corinthians 6:20). As a matter of fact, we don’t pay for any product twice. Our bodies have been redeemed from the corruption of sickness and disease; therefore, we are now redeemed to glorify God, not the devil.

    Who is this Great Physician?

God introduced Himself as the Physician in prophecy in Jeremiah 8:19-22: But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, they that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick… (Matthew 9:12). His name is Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God.

Whatever He cannot do, cannot be, whatever He cannot handle cannot exist; He is the ultimate reference on all health issues. He is the same yesterday, today and forever.   On the Cross, Jesus carried the burden of every sickness and disease that has tormented us.  This implies that, He paid the ultimate price to credit total health into our account. We are told that He received 39 wicked Roman stripes as a result of being beaten with whips that had iron thorns attached to them. As they whipped Him and pulled it, it drew flesh from His Body and His Blood gushed out. Jesus painfully received 39 of them, for every form of classified sickness and disease that the world will ever know (1 Peter 2:24; Isaiah 53:4-5).

In the light of the above, an end came to all our sicknesses and diseases. For surely He had borne our sicknesses and carried our pains; therefore, every pain and sickness has become illegal (Isaiah 53:4-5). The end came to every torment, when Jesus rose from the dead; the deal was sealed and we are now free (1 Peter 2:24).

Every health issue was fully settled before it began to rear its ugly head. Every sickness and disease bows to His authority (Philippians 2:9-11). This is what qualified Him as ‘The Great Physician.’

    What is His Great Prescription?

One of the principal prescriptions of the Great Physician is the Anointing Oil.  We recognize that the Anointing Oil is one of the vital balms in Gilead for the total restoration of the health of God’s people. This is why Jesus gave the Anointing Oil to His disciples when He sent them forth. As it is written……he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits;… and they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them (Mark 6:7-13).

This implies that the Anointing Oil is the power of God in the mystery that establishes our protection, sound health, and deliverance from the torments of the wicked one. Remember also that the Anointing oil is a trans-generational mystery. As it is written: And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, This shall be an holy anointing oil unto me throughout your generations (Exodus 30:31).

Moreover, inside the Oil dwells the mysterious presence of the Holy Ghost. John the Baptist by the Spirit of the Lord presented the Holy Ghost as a personality with a fan and fire in His hand and on a mission to thoroughly purge His floor. That is, to preserve the organs of our bodies, gather together the chaff, and consume them with His unquenchable fire (Matthew 3:11-13; 1 Corinthians 6:19).

Interestingly, every healing recorded in Scripture answered to faith. For instance, we understand from scriptures that even though Jesus gave His disciples the Anointing Oil, The disciples in turn used it by faith and got result. Perhaps, if they didn’t use it, it wouldn’t have worked for them.

Furthermore, when the woman with the issue of blood touched the hem of Jesus’ garment in faith, virtue flowed through Him and she was made whole instantly. (Matthew 9:29; Luke 8:40-46). Also, when Martha told Jesus that Lazarus was dead for four days and already stinking, He replied: …Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? (John 11:39-40).

Thereafter, Jesus called forth Lazarus and he that was dead came out of the grave alive. That shows faith as the principal force that brought Lazarus back to life.

We must recognise that faith is not a risk; unbelief is the real risk because unbelief disconnects us from help from above.

Moreover, faith comes by hearing and understanding the Word (Romans 10:17). This is why every healing answers to supernatural insight from the Word. Nevertheless, according to scriptures, healing, health and wholeness are exclusively reserved for the redeemed. Are you born again? If you are not, this is an opportunity to do so. Simply say the following prayer: Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Today, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now I know I am born again!”  For further reading, please get my books: Keys to Divine Health, The Healing Balm, The Miracle Meal and Fulfilling Your Days. • ‘Christian youths hold key to nation building’

The President of Success Within International, Ajayi Ebenezer-Success, has advised Christian youths to confront challenges facing the nation with faith and hard work.

He said the challenges of the nation are opportunities for youths to showcase their relevance and write their names in gold.

Ebenezer-Success spoke with our correspondent shortly after the

5th conference of the organisation in Lagos.

Tagged Excellence, the Original Intention, the conference attracted youths from nooks and crannies of the nation.

It featured prayers, panel discussion, networking and prophetic declaration.

He said that Nigeria has enormous opportunities for youths that will refuse to complain but set goals and make pragmatic steps to achieve them.

He pointed out that Nigeria has become the hub for multi-national media firms such as facebook, apple, google, Microsoft and others because they identified the boundless opportunities around and harnessed them appropriately.

Ebenzer-Success said most youths complained of lack of capital but said the least resource they need to fix the nation is money.

“Money remains the least of capital needed to grow one’s ideas, project or ministry, as character, honesty, ingenuity, proper planning and trust in God are the major capitals needed that will stand the test of time.

“Money is basically the reward of an accomplishment and not the main accomplishment.”

He added that Jesus Christ did not focus on money yet He had all His needs met.

“Money is good and having money is so wonderful but avoid money having you. You are a great success story; Living for posterity and not only for prosperity is imperative.”

He added: “It is time for youths to get prepared to dominate as the mandate given to us by our Father in heaven. A time comes when you need to stop waiting for the man you want to become and start being the man you want to be.”
