  • Forgery: Court orders ex-Assemblies leader to appear Jan 20

Justice K N Ogbonnaya of Abuja High Court, sitting in Kubwa has ordered the excommunicated General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God Nigeria, Rev Paul Emeka to appear on January 20, 2017 over the pending forgery case at the court

The trial Judge had in October 2016 ordered the embattled Emeka and three trustees of Assemblies of God Nigeria to appear before the court on November 30th.

At the resumed sitting, Rev Ejikeme Ejim, Assistant General Superintendent, Rev Johnson Odin (rtd) and Dr. Rev Godwin Akpan Amaowoh, General Secretary represented the church as trustees.

    But Emeka was absent.

He however sent a Former Director of Administration of the church, Rev Emeka Eze, to represent him, claiming to be down with malaria and typhoid fevers.

Angered by his absence, the judge ordered that he must appear on January 20, 2017.

The Judge told counsel to the applicant Mr. J U Ajii to ensure that his client (Rev Paul Emeka) appear before her on the said date.

Justice K.N Ogbonnaya had given an order for stay of Proceeding at the Upper Area Court.

But the Upper Area Court did not stay proceedings after the take-over of the original forgery case by the Attorney General On August, 30.

There was a mild drama as the Judge ordered Counsel to the defendant Barr Ifeanyichukwu Obasi- Nweze to produce a blogger, Promie Uzoma Okoro in court on the next adjourned date.

She claimed the blogger accused her of being bribed by Rev Paul Emeka in an article.

Ogbonnaya said: “Counsel to the defendant, on the next adjourned date make sure you produce in court Mr. Promise Uzoma Okoro.

“I’m ready to fight him over the article he wrote against my person that I was bribed by Rev Paul Emeka.”

  • ‘We need more regenerated artists’

National Secretary Officer in charge of inspecting and correcting activities of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Rivers Province 12 and 13, Pastor Seun Sogunro, is a fine arts practitioner.
He spoke with Sunday Oguntolaon his life and a scheduled exhibition to mark his 60th birthday. Excerpts:

What has changed for you at 60?

At 60, many things have changed. The energy expended on work and activities is no longer as strong as when one was 40 years old. Spiritually, one is stronger though. Many activities are now delegated- which is wisdom.

The way I view and act over issues has changed. One does not flare up like a 20-year-old. The type of food and number of times one eats has changed. Food items that are full of carbohydrates are consumed less but protein and fruits are taken more. My body can’t take breakfast anymore even if I am not fasting.

Though I still stand up to draw and paint, I sit down more. I sleep less currently, which gives me time to pray. Most times, when I set alarm clock to wake me, I ‘m already awake before it sounds. Currently, there is the realisation that one can’t spend the number of years already spent again on earth.

What does fine arts have in common with pastoring?

Fine Arts have many things in common with pastoring. Just as in teaching, students remember what they see than what they hear. Art works are used to encourage or remind the people concerning moral life style, prayerful, fellowship, evangelism, cleanliness, unity and so on.

In Exodus 31, God instructed Moses to get some set of artists that would assist in carrying out specific assignments in the beautification of God’s tabernacle and craftily working on some church items.

So, for me, being a pastor and fine arts practitioner is combined honours.

What would you remember as the lowest ebb of your life?

One occasion I remember was when some of us in Yaba Tech were asked to repeat the whole final year. Instead of graduating in 1980, I had to graduate in 1981. Initially, it was disappointing but God had to console me to go back.

We knew that we were not asked to repeat because we were poor academically but because we were good and proud. I had to keep to myself during the long vacation. I went back and took the whole session and eventually graduated and had NYSC in Command Secondary School, Ipaja Lagos.

At 60, what has life taught you?

At 60, life has taught me that it is not of him that wills but of God that shows mercy. This means that it is not by strength or power but by God’s Spirit. I have learnt that what is more important is our closeness to God; that if we remain close to God, we will have whatsoever we need at God’s timing.

I have also learnt that human beings can’t query God. He does what He wills. He is the one that protects, lifts up, provides what no man can give like keeping one alive, giving one children and so on.

As a PHD holder in Church Growth, is it true that church growth is an illusion?

There are many technicalities and principles that Christians need to know. Things that if we practice, the church will grow and things that, if we practice, the church will not grow.

People need to know that church growth is both the scientific and Holy Spirit study of the nature of the church. If church workers expand their knowledge concerning how God’s church that Jesus used His blood to purchase should be, people will not get frustrated or become failures.

If as church workers, we work on our character, our lives will not drive people away from the church but we’ll attract lives.

What difference is fine art making on your pastoring assignments and vice versa?

I am able to use artistic illustrations to make my points easily understood during my teachings and in the books I have written. The difference that my pastoring is making on my painting is passing Biblical messages and virtues through the art.

My paintings do not encourage disorderliness, idolatry or Satanic worship. What is exposed to me as a pastor can’t make me portray groups issue out death warrant on their members or see murder as good in my painting.

I can’t publicise them in the name of culture. At times of ignorance in the past, we used to publicise pornography and Satan worship but not again.

How did you come into the ministry?

After about eight years that I gave my life to Jesus Christ, when I was transformed from a sinful life style to that of the fear of God, my church leadership instructed after prayers that I should lead other seven church workers to pioneer another branch of RCCG.

Less than one year after we started, I went to have a personal prayer retreat. I was asking God to help me and empower me. After some hours into prayers, I was taken in a kind of trance. I saw myself taken by some men to the Deputy General Overseer that he should take me; that I was ready.

I was not happy when I came to myself. I quickly understood that I should work full time with the church. The Deputy General Overseer – that time – was in charge of interviews for new full timers.

After some days, I applied, was interviewed and employed in 1996. Twenty years down the line, I have not regretted my action. God has been faithful.

Why exhibition to mark your birthday?

It was around 11 months to my 60th birthday that I was thinking of what to do on the occasion- I had always organised or handled a project to mark landmarks for myself and the church I pastor.

It has always been to pass a message to the community or Christians. It has never been an occasion to wine and dine.

Apart from writing a book, which is actually a miracle to do (I never love writing but God supernaturally taught me). I was reminded to use my talent, which is drawing and painting to bless the church- to pass across information of Christian virtues and beautify the church.

The Spirit of God made me to see that Christian premises are not beautiful enough. In Exodus 31, 35, 36, 37, 38 and other parts of the bible, God told Moses that he had anointed some people specially to beautify the tabernacle, working with various medium.

When people say ‘see Paris and die’ or that Dubai is beautiful, it is the lavish use of art works to embellish both the interior of buildings, bridges and parks.

I was inspired to make some art works and donate to the church as an example before encouraging other Christian artists to do the same. It is also to pass a message on art works that are not harmful to us like in the name of culture.

Some produce idolatry artworks and promoting groups that issue death warrants to those that leave their group. There are some of the art works I feature that pass a message that pedestrian flyovers are becoming outdated.

In Milton Keynes, a city near London, pedestrians walk under while vehicles drive above, not men and women running 100 metres to cross busy roads.

  • Nothing like trinity, says Nazarene ringleader

Christian businessman, Mr. Sam Bob-Manuel, has challenged the popular trinity doctrine of the church.

The doctrine, he said, is fallacious and has no backing in the scriptures.

Bob-Manuel spoke with reporters last week in Lagos.

The self-acclaimed Nazarene sect ringleader said the notion that the Holy Spirit is the third person of the trinity is a dogma that has lasted for generations without basis.

Quoting several portions of the scripture, the business man said the bible only recognises God the father and Jesus.

The Holy Spirit, he said, has no place in the divine order contrary to popular belief.

According to him: “This Holy Spirit, who is the third person of the trinity, is only an invention of the Trinitarian Catholic Church which the other churches have adopted or ignorantly followed.”

Bob-Manuel reiterated Christian fixated on the Holy Spirit are unwittingly idol worshippers.

He added: “Some philosophers came and introduced a third person of equal rank starting seriously from Gregory Thaumaturgus in 270 A.D. and consolidated by Augustine of Hippo in 400 A.D.?

“Could we be worshipping idol if we go for the third person and so trinity? Are we safe worshipping the trinity god in our churches?

“Christ has no other witness other than his Father. He does not bring in any other whom we call the Holy Spirit as a third witness.

“The purported ”Holy Spirit” is still firmly, persistently, constantly, and irrevocably excluded by Jesus Christ.

“This spiritual fact remains sacrosanct. Only his Father, his God, who of course is a holy spirit person, bears him witness as confirmed.”

He lamented that the body of Christ has been overtaken by wolves, who “consider themselves church founders and general overseers.

“They are only interested in their personal wealth creation schemes at the expense of the masses.”

To debunk the popular ‘fallacy’ and other dogmas, Bob-Manuel announced that he will start a satellite TV station to “disseminate the truth to truth seekers” from the first quarters of 2017.

The station, Red Letters Channel, he said will involve in Christian edutainment aimed at exposing the truths to the body of Christ.

He said the station will survive because “it is God’s agenda and God does not need human help to get whatever He wants.”

  • Harvest of miracles at GOMERM’s rally

Harvest of miracles at GOMERM’s rally

The general overseer of God’s Mercy Revival Ministries (GOMERM), Dr James Akanbi, has advised Christians not to settle for anything other than whatever God has written about them.

He said the circumstances they find themselves must never be accepted as divine verdicts.

Akanbi spoke last Sunday during a well-attended rally of the church in Abesan stadium, Lagos.

According to him, whatever the enemies have said about Christians is never final but temporary.

He therefore challenged them not to be short-circuited or defined by the current negative activities around them.

Speaking on the theme of the rally, the final verdict, Akanbi said: “The devil might have said it is over for you. He might have declared it that you are finished.

‘Sickness might have said you are captured forever. Poverty might have declared you a permanent ally.

“Whatever any other person aside from God has spoken about your life is not permanent because there is a divine verdict.”

The final verdict, according to him, is only what God has declared.

“When God speaks, everything else does not matter. He doesn’t just speak; He enforces whatever He says.

“The final verdict on your life is that it is well. The final verdict is that you are healed. The final verdict is that the devil has lost out.

“That is what you should believe, not what the enemies are saying.”

His speech was intermittently interrupted by divine manifestations of deliverance and healing.

A crippled man left his crutches, eliciting wide jubilations among the crowd.

A man in his 60s testified of healing from chronic diabetes, which affected his urinary system.

“After the man of God asked us to check where we were sick, I excused myself to the toilet. For the first time in years, I passed out urine without pains,” he said to applause.

  • Engaging the Ministry of the Holy Ghost for Exploits! (3)

Previously on this column, we established that as God’s children, we are ordained to command exploits; however, without the empowerment and anointing of the Holy Spirit, we cannot manifest same. Last week, we examined the Spirit of faith as one of dimensions of the Holy Spirit that empower us for exploits. We also looked at some of the manifestations of the Spirit of faith. This week, we will continue this teaching by exploring other manifestations of the Spirit of faith, which include:

    • It supernaturally drives us in the direction of what we believe, which provokes supernatural results: Concerning Jesus, the Bible says: And immediately the Spirit driveth him into the wilderness (Mark 1:12).

We also saw in scriptures how the man who was tormented with palsy was brought to Jesus through the roof and the Bible records that Jesus saw their faith. No doubt, the Spirit of faith drives people in the direction of what they believe (Mark 2:1-12).

    • Confers peace that passes all understanding: As it is written: There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief (Hebrews 4:9-12; see also Philippians 4:7).

v                                    Another dimension of the Holy Spirit that empower us for exploits is The Spirit of knowledge or revelation: The Bible says: That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints (Ephesians 1:17-18; Isaiah 11:1-2).

‘Revelation’ simply means spiritual understanding; that is, being able to see what God is saying. Remember, God grants us our desires as far as our eyes can see; if we can see it, we have committed God to give it. The ultimate ministry of the Holy Spirit is to quicken our spiritual understanding, thereby empowering us for outstanding accomplishments. For instance, Daniel became the most outstanding among presidents because of the Spirit of understanding, which the Bible calls the Spirit of excellence, was at work in him. It is impossible to possess the Spirit of excellence and not excel naturally (Proverbs 13:15; Daniel 6:3; John 14:26; 1 Corinthians 2:9-10).

Furthermore, the Spirit of revelation stirs a revolution in a man’s life and changes people’s position supernaturally. Therefore, nothing empowers like knowledge and nothing transforms like revelation. God is so deep that only shallow men think they know enough of Him. This is why all men of exploits have spiritual insight into things that others don’t have (Isaiah 60:1, 8, 22; Daniel 11:32; Romans 11:33, 12:1-2).

How, then, does the Holy Ghost empower us to command exploits?

    • The anointing puts us in command and authority over all circumstances (Isaiah 45:1-3, 11).
    • The anointing empowers the believer to command exploits (Isaiah 45:13, 61:1-2).
    • The anointing restores the beauty of the believer (Isaiah 61:3).
    • It empowers men to accomplish unusual feats (Isaiah 61:4, 5-6).

In conclusion, we cannot experience the power of the Holy Spirit and not see His glory. However, it is important to understand that our journey to encounter power begins with the baptism of the Holy Ghost. It is the right of everyone that is saved to be baptised in the Holy Ghost, with the evidence of speaking in tongues, as it is one way to validate our salvation. Moreover, when we speak in tongues, we are speaking mysteries to God, which our enemies cannot understand. In this wicked world, we are not secure without being filled with the Holy Ghost. We must, therefore, crave for Holy Ghost baptism with evidence of speaking with new tongues because it is the key to triumphant living (Psalms 63:1-3; 1 Corinthians 14:2, 16:9).

As we position ourselves spiritually to encounter the power of the Holy Spirit this month, everything resisting our destinies will come under the dagger of the Holy Ghost in Jesus’ name! Remain ever blessed. Are you born again? If you haven’t accepted Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord, you can do so as you say this prayer: “Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the Living God. Today, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now I know I am born again!”
