Kumuyi and unlimited joy in Ijesaland

The land of Ilesha, which had in the past played host to great revival crusades in the 1930s by Ayo Babalola, and others, which spread across the nation and beyond, was agog again, when one of Africa’s foremost evangelist and General Superintendent of the Deeper Life Bible Church Worldwide, Pastor William Folorunsho Kumuyi, an Ijesa man himself, visited with great signs and wonders.

Ijesaland which has produced great men of God in our generation, such as Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, the late Prophet Timothy Obadare, Bishop Mike Bamidele, and Prophet S.K. Abiara, among others could be said to be fortunate again,   when the Osun State Total Liberation crusades of the Deeper Life Bible Church, in collaboration with Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN ) and Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) rekindled the fire of revival in Ijesaland.

The crusade train which got to Ilesha on Saturday, November 21, was received by the Region Overseer of Deeper Life Bible Church in Ilesha, Pastor Gabriel Olorunninbe Esho with thousands of people who thronged out to welcome the son of the soil.

Immediately Pastor Kumuyi’s convoy entered the town, he drove straight to the palace to pay homage to the Owa Obokun Adimula of Ijesaland, HRM Oba Gabriel Aromolaran, who also enjoyed the same government scholarship with Pastor Kumuyi at University of Ibadan in those days.

The first night of the crusade, held at the Deeper Life Camp Ground Klm 2, Ijebu-jesa Road, Ilesha witnessed powerful praise worship session, revival prayers and songs ministrations from CAN and Osun State Deeper Life mass choir.

When Pastor Biola Adeniran, the Osun State Overseer of Deeper Life Bible Church, Pastor Kumuyi to the participants, they went wild with joy and jubilation, because many of them were just seeing the man of God face to face since le lasted visited about forty about years ago.

Pastor Kumuyi greeted the people in Ijesa dialect to their admiration. In his message “Glorious Freedom through Jesus the emancipator.” He said, “Jesus has come to set you free, heaven will record your freedom and we are going to rejoice over your freedom.”

Mr. Wale Akinrinde, who was on the crusade ground just to fulfill his curiosity of seeing the man of God, got the surprise of his life, when he discovered that he had been healed of pains from dislocation of the waist bone, among others.

On the second day of the crusade Pastor Kumuyi held a Sunday morning service at the Deeper Life Camp Ground, venue of the crusade, where he talked about “Our true identity in God’s sight.”

The Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, who was a special guest at the crusade expressed his joy for being privileged to attend the crusade of Pastor Kumuyi. He testified that when Pastor Kumuyi came last year to Osogbo, he gave a prayer request that God should give him the wisdom to do the work of twenty years in four years. And that his request still remains that God should give him the wisdom to do the work in three years that remains for him to serve the people of Osun.

Dignitaries present at the crusade included Olori Nike Aromolaran;  Chief Olusegun Badejoko, Oba Adetona Akintokun; Prof. Yemi Kayode Adedeji, Mr. Muyiwa Owotumi and twelve others representing Egbe Atunluse of Ijesaland and a host of others.

  • Olagunju tasks church leaders on discipleship

The Senior Pastor of Kingdom Life Christian Centre, Pastor Jummy Olagunju, has called on church leaders to focus on discipleship and develop believers as solution provider within their community.

Olagunju made this known in an interview with The Nation at the monthly Praise Arena Night oganised by the Kingdom Life Christian Ministry held recently at NICON in Lagos.

According to him, God is looking for pastors that will motivate and inspire the involvement of believers to the service of God and provide solutions to world problems.

He said ”our society lies in darkness as confusion, poverty, corruption, injustices and insecurity become more visible. They daily seek for the light which the church that is focused on Jesus can give within their communities and sphere of influence”.

He noted that Christians of all ages have risen up to bring about good education, health care facilities, good roads, portable water and all forms of economic empowerment programmes in modern civilisation.

The tele evangelist opined that the church cannot remain indifferent to the needs and aspiration of the world around them because of the growing needs for us to shine as light and sow the good seeds of love, care, understanding, and hospitality.

Olagunju, said he believes that the church should bring smiles to the world around them as “our message of the kingdom will expand and spread round the world if we bring smiles to the downtrodden, neglected, and the vulnerable people around us.”

He also lamented the wise spate of prosperity message being promoted by some church leaders as against the message that would prepare men for heaven.

He said, “it is increasingly worrisome that many unbelievers come to church and they think Christianity is only about prosperity and abundance. Meanwhile, it is only faith in Jesus Christ that guarantees eternal life.”

He noted that there must be an immediate doctrinal shift in the church. The preaching of money gospel must cease and the Nigerian church must return to the message of the cross, the message of the good news of the kingdom of God; the message of repentance from sin leading to eternal life.

Olagunju posited that the Nigerian church has not been raising disciples. “Rather, it has focused on raising millionaires. We are all witnesses of the unfortunate results of that distraction. There must be a deliberate doctrinal shift in the church. Mammon must be dethroned in the church while Christ must be enthroned in His rightful position as the Lord of all,” declared Olagunju.

  • Atilade support Buhari stance on Biafra protestants

The South West Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria, Arch Bishop Magnus Atlade, has thrown his weight behind the stance of President Muhammadu Buhari against protests by Biafra groups.

Atolde said this in an interview with The Nation recently at the Intercessory Prayers of Faith for Peace and change for Development and Progress in Nigeria organised by the Christian Association of Nigeria, South West in collaboration with Christian NGOs.

The programe tagged:  Talitha Cumi, Arise, Walk and Pray for Nigeria brought together hundreds of Christian faithful drawn from across various denominations and nongovernmental organizations.  It featured a three-day prayer and fasting, prayer walk from Yaba to the National Stadium, and thanksgiving.

According to him, Nigeria has existed for over 100 years and we have lived together as one in spite of our tribal, language and religious differences. No groups can destroy the unity and understanding we share together as a nation.

He opined that the Biafran agitators are selfish individuals who are not true representatives of the Ibo nation and should not be allowed to fester like other terrorists groups in the country.

He noted that the Boko Haram group festered and its resultant effect  to the nation has been very disastrous: over 1.8million have been displaced and about – thousands killed because they were not contained on time.

He asserted that  the demonstrators are not the majority of the Ibo and cannot decide for millions of Ibos spread across the country.

Although, he urged the federal government to work on the Confab report and commit it to a referendum and Nigerians can vote on it and those who want to go can go.

He cited the recent referendum carried out by Scotland to leave the United Kingdom where majority of the people in Scotland voted to remain with the United Kingdom and that buried the clamour in some quarters that they want to live.

Atilade stressed that it is not in the interest of an individual or groups of individuals to decide for the generality of the country.

He also lamented the continuous rage of Boko Haram in parts of the country, who according to him requires government decisive action.

On Boko Haram continous reign of terror, he said that President Buhari should drive members of the group in their various cells and areas where they are so that Nigeria can experience peace.

  • ‘I always wanted to be a preacher’

‘I always wanted to be a preacher’

The Presiding Pastor of the Divine Grace Church of God, United Kingdom the United Kingdom, Rev. Felicia Okoya, spoke with Yetunde Olaseinde on her upbringing, passion and ministry. Excerpts:

How did the call come for you?

I was raised as a young girl in a convent and the Rev. Sister kept singing to me then that Felicia, beauty and brain usually don’t get married.

So, I always had it at the back of my mind and I had the desire to live my life for Christ. So when the opportunity came, I heard people talking to me, prophecy here and there.

The first time I went to Orlando, Benny Hinn called me out of the whole congregation. There were over a million people there. He called me and said the gifts of God upon my life were just too much.

Archbishop Idahosa also called me out and said, ‘God said all the businesses you have been doing, going to China, America you will also do business for God by preaching the gospel.’

Do you have any area of specialisation?

Yes I like teaching the word of God. Everything is in the bible. If you are sick, the answer is there. If you are poor, the answer is there. If you are weak, the answer is there.

Let the weak say I’m strong, let the poor say I’m rich. Every answer is there and I like standing on the word and speaking on the word.

How did you start caring for orphans and the widows?

As a young person, I saw my father feeding the poor in my town in Anambra state. I grew up having that passion to feed the poor. When the opportunity came, I saw so many poor people around me and I had money.

I started giving widows money to do their businesses, teach them skills and I still do till now. I had a mega workshop with them recently in Nigeria.

We run workshops for women. It’s about capacity building, empowering them so we usually do workshop and the last one we had 400 widows in my village Ozoto 9 miles from Onitsha in Anambra State.

I fed them and I gave them gifts. The most important thing is to give them something that they will use to start businesses. It doesn’t matter how small, it will grow big tomorrow.

You spoke about your father passionately, what did he mean to you?

My father was the love of my life. He is the only man I have ever loved. My mother had me and died but my father raised me single handedly.

He was a civil servant, so growing up with a man like that who refused to marry because of me was a great source of inspiration. He always believed in me. He always told people that I am the best.

So, I grew up seeing myself as the best. He was somebody that pointed that out in me. Up till now, I still believe that I am still the best.

    How about your husband?

He has gone to be with the Lord. He is my second love. I was seventeen when I met him. I had admission in Harvard and I was to do medicine. So I came to one office to tell my uncle and I met this charming young man.

He did not talk to me. I was going up and he was going down. I was heading to my uncle’s office and he walked in there; he was a lawyer.

He said excuse me sir I want to marry her and I found it strange because I never had a boyfriend and a stranger coming to say he wanted to marry me. So, that is the story.

    Did you enjoy the marriage?

Yes, he was much older than me. I just left secondary school; he was already working as a lawyer. He nurtured me and honestly, he sowed into my life.

What did you like about your husband?

I don’t think I like his career. I liked his personality. I don’t say lawyers are bad but they don’t say the truth all the time.

They change things around. I read Law myself. He made me read Law at Burkinshire University in the United Kingdom.

I refused to practise because it’s against my personality because I can’t lie and I can’t tell my client to lie. When he married me, he was working in a bank as a company secretary. That was comfortable for me.

He had a good job, benefits, drivers; I was living in Ikoyi at that tender age and going on holidays also. He wasn’t going to courts. He was dealing with customers who borrowed money from the bank for their businesses.

Are your children also in the legal profession?

My first daughter is a pastor; she’s an economist. She’s a lovely girl and married. I have a son that is also a lawyer, a lovely child. He stays in UK.

I have another child, Ngozika, she read English Literature and Mass Communication and I have a banker too.

    What is your favourite scripture?

My favourite scripture is I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me. I can never fail because my father told me I could never fail. Even as a young girl, I wasn’t good in Mathematics.

I came home and he asked what my position was. I would say third. My father would tell me not to mind the teacher; he doesn’t know how to mark the paper that is why you came third. So, I grew up like that. I love myself so much.

Who are the people you admire?

In Nigeria, I don’t know if I should say it. I like Goodluck Jonathan. I admire him from afar and he’s a cool guy. I don’t like men who are aggressive. Though he didn’t go well, he meant well.

I admire Obama. From nothing, he became something. That is encouraging. For people abroad, you don’t have to be raised by your father before you become something.

He had a nominal father. I admire him a lot. He has done well, not excellently well now but he has done well.

What advice do you have for younger women?

They should be focused and not allow any man to intimidate them because we live in a man’s world. I will also say to them not to do what you don’t want to do because of circumstances. Believe in God and He will direct your path.

I discovered that many try to please men, it’s unnecessary. Please yourself and you have to love yourself first before loving anyone and that makes you a real and strong woman.

    What gives you inspiration?

I like reading biographers. I want to know people more, what they do, what made them who they are. That encourages my lifestyle also.

Let’s talk about some happy moments in life?

To be honest, the day I had my first baby was a happy moment and the day I was ordained a priest also because it’s something I have always admired because I schooled in a convent school. I always wanted to get closer to God.

So to be God servant was like a wedding to me. I was too young when I got married. I was 17 years when I wedded. I was too young to appreciate it but wedding with Christ was an excitement because I had my eyes wide opened.

  • Unlocking the supernatural!

We recognize from scriptures that every redeemed child of God is ordained a sign and a wonder to his world; but it takes the understanding of who we are to be empowered to become what we have been redeemed to be. This is because destiny is essentially a product of identity. Therefore, to actualize our glorious destiny, we must be able to answer the following questions: Who am I? Where am I from? and What am I worth? Interestingly, we can also discover God’s plan and purpose for us from His Word. This is because God’s Word is not just a book, but a spiritual mirror that reveals our actual worth in redemption (Isaiah 14:24). However, it takes accessing our true picture from the mirror of the Word to operate in the realm of signs and wonders (James 1:22-25).

What are our true pictures in redemption?

    • We are redeemed as spirit beings in human flesh: Remember, when Adam’s spirit was alive, he was a supernatural being. After the fall of Adam, his spirit man died. However, when a man is born again, his spirit is re-born and he becomes a new creature. We must understand that the supernatural is domicile in the spirit realm; but, until we are born again, we cannot manifest in that realm (John 3:5-6).
    • We are redeemed as spiritual lions to prevail where others travail: Jesus is the Lion of the tribe of Judah and He said: As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world (John 17:18; See also Revelations 5:5). This means, we share the same DNA with Christ and as such, we possess the same Lion nature in Him. We need to recognize our picture as spiritual lions who have been redeemed to live above fear (Proverbs 30:29-30; Philippians 1:28; 2 Timothy 1:7). However, the freshness of the lion is in the freshness of the food it eats. Moreover, hunger is the greatest threat to the destiny of the lion. Thus, it takes fresh revelation from God’s Word to keep the lion in us alive (Psalms 34:10).

In addition, we understand from scriptures that the Word of God is likened to water that reflects our true identity in Christ as we study God’s Word. A story was told by Kenneth E. Hagin of a lion cub that was captured and made to grow among sheep. It lost its “lionic” identity by virtue of its environment until the day it saw its reflection on the surface of the water. That day, it regained its identity and confidence. As a result, when other sheep fled at the appearance of a lion, it didn’t. This illustration helps us to understand that when we look into (study) God’s Word and believe what it says, He confers us with dominion over every torment of the wicked (Ephesians 5:26; Proverbs 27:19).

    • We are redeemed as spiritual eagles to soar where others struggle: According to scriptures, God is our Eagle Father, so we are His eagle children. Therefore, we are spiritual eagles, redeemed to soar where others sweat; remember, like begets like (Deuteronomy 32:9-13). No arrow can target an eagle successfully because it flies beyond where it can be reached. Likewise, no force of the wicked can truncate our glorious destiny in Christ (Ephesians 1:20-21).
    • We have been redeemed to operate in the realm of unlimited possibilities: We are spirit beings redeemed to live above human limitations. Jesus said: Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father (John 14:12; See also Philippians 4:13). We need an understanding of our redemptive rights in Christ; otherwise, we will become cheap preys to the devil. Remember, before the fall of Adam, his spirit man was alive and he flowed naturally in the supernatural. The Bible records that he named all the animals and they bowed to his authority. Hence, our spirit man is the platform for operating in the supernatural. It has to be kept alive, agile, active and buoyant for us to flow in the supernatural. Interestingly, we build capacity into our spirit man largely by the revelation of the Word. Just like we cannot live a healthy life without good nutrition, similarly, we cannot maintain a healthy spirit without the Word of God. The Word is our spiritual nutrition that builds our spirit man to flow in the supernatural (Genesis 1:26-28; Jeremiah 15:16: Acts 20:32).

However, to flow in the supernatural, you must first accept Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord. Are you born again? If you are yet to be, please say this prayer and you shall be born again: “Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me of my sins. Cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the Living God. Today, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now I know I am born again!”

  • Be patient, Okonkwo charges

    Be patient, Okonkwo charges

The Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), Dr Mike Okonkwo, has appealed to Nigerians to give the current administration more time to revive the nation.

He noted the socio-economic difficulties Nigerians have had to live with but said they would soon smile with the ongoing restructuring policies of the current administration.

Okonkwo spoke last Sunday after the opening ceremony of the annual Kingdom Life World Conference (KLWC) of the church at its Lagos Anthony headquarters with the theme “Rest.”

The Buhari-led administration, he pointed out, had made significant progress in power supply and security.

He however stated that much is left to be done, stating these will be sorted out with more support and cooperation from Nigerians.

He blamed the current fuel scarcity on panic buying and the activities of profiteers, saying “Nigerians must learn not to make money from every challenge people face.”

Okonkwo told reporters that the spate of terror attacks worldwide has confirmed that “true and real rest lies only in Jesus Christ.”

He said terror will continue unabated but said only those who depend on God will scale through.

Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo, who opened the conference, told participants to rely on God for advancement.

  • Don’t compromise, Cleric tells Buhari

The founder of Gospel Forwarders to All Nation Mission Lagos, Reverend Samuel Okediran, has encouraged President Muhammadu Buhari not to relent on his determination to rid the nation of corruption.

He challenged the President to remain focused on cleansing the nation to take Nigeria to the Promised Land.

The cleric spoke at the 22nd anniversary of the church last Sunday.

Buhari, according to him, was chosen by God, warning him not to allow politicians shift his focus from redemption to survival.

He predicted that 2016 will be a year of progress and success for the nation if the President remains on course.

Okediran said: “The country is blessed with a god- fearing President. What happened in the last election was a clear indication that God has intervened in this country by choosing Buhari for us.

“God has chosen Buhari to fix this country economically and what we need is to give him support through our prayers and advice.

“During the Buhari administration, the country will witness tremendous change in all sectors but the President should be careful about some decisions he will take in the nearest future.

“He should not listen to selfish politicians instead he should seek the knowledge of God to direct him so that Nigeria will be a better place to live.

“What God told me about President Buhari was that he should not compromise his stance and always stand by truth.”

He advised the newly appointed ministers to shun corruption and other vices that can bring the government into disrepute.

He said the era of spending the government fund ravishingly is over and counseled them to be prudent for execution of all approved projects.

  • Hitgallut: The revelation of the end

Hitgallut: The revelation of the end

We are,” Karen Armstrong writes in her book, The Great Transformation, “meaning-seeking creatures and, unlike other animals, fall very easily into despair if we cannot find significance and value in our lives.”

The bible says, seek and you shall find. Fair enough. If you do not seek you cannot find, and you wallow in soul-destroying ignorance. Life is wrapped in layers of mysteries. We are all searching for that ineffable thing that would help us unwrap the mysteries of life. It is a titanic challenge.

The question we deal with is a simple but complex one: where do we search for the true meaning of our lives? Several avenue offer tantalizing possibilities: science, religion, politics and technology. Each in its own way gives us some answers to the mysteries of life. Arguably, what we make of these answers gives meaning to our lives.

Religion occupies a unique place in our search for meaning. We have good reasons to conclude, even if tentatively, that the search for meaning gave us religion and then drove us into the arms of religion in all its varied forms monotheism, polytheism and animism.

Ever since the first couple, Adam and Eve, lost their enviably privileged position in the Garden of Eden, man has never felt right with God. He wants to know how he stands in his relationship with his creator. He wants an assurance that through his proper behavior, such as fully obeying His commandments, he can earn the right to be called a true child of God. Here, he hacks at the granite rock with a kitchen knife.

There is something unique too about the search for meaning to religion it is not just about today; it is, more importantly, about tomorrow. That tomorrow is about critical questions such as these: Is there life after death? Is there paradise where those who, through grace or good works, can live in eternal bliss? Is there hell where those who fell out of favour with God would spend eternity in hellfire? Will the world end one day? Is there a judgment day for the living and the dead? Will Jesus Christ return to gather his beloved sheep to himself?

Christianity and other big religions build their relevance on what tomorrow has in store for the faithful. Doctrinal arguments and postulations do expand the frontiers of our search for meaning. Shedding light on the mysteries of today and tomorrow or what is called the End times is a tough task. Part of the problem is that many partially informed writers offer a liberal reading and embellished interpretation of Revelation, the last book in the New Testament to make a case for the End times.

The End times is the subject of Pastor Jide Makinde’s very readable book, HITGALLUT, The revelation of the end. I have read quite a good number of books on the End times and dismissed most of them as nothing better than half-baked views on a matter well beyond the ken of those authors.

I find this book refreshingly different for a good number of reasons. It was well researched and very well written. It is a serious book for serious-minded Christians, particularly those of them who are engaged in arguments or studies relating to the End times.

The author demonstrates a rare insight into the Old Testament and the New Testament and copiously quotes the two sections of the Bible to support his argument on the Second coming of Jesus Christ. His deft handling of the various prophecies and his erudite scholarship place the book far and above what I have read so far on the End times and the Second coming of Jesus Christ.

I am pleased to recommend it to all those who believe, as I do, that all religious communities must seek to be thoroughly informed of their doctrine. It brings sanity to such communities.

    Obembe tasks Fashola on roads

The presiding Bishop of Elshaddai Bible Church and former Chairman of the Lagos chapter of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Bishop Olanrewaju Obembe has urged the Minister of Works, Power and Housing, Raji Fashola, to take on the challenge of ensuring that major  roads in the country are not nightmares for motorists.

In a statement on Friday, Obembe described the Fashola’s new assignment as a round peg in a round hole noting that his wealth of experience in Lagos state will be brought to bear in the sectors that he has been put charge.

He urged the former governor to do what “Napoleon could not do” by constructing “five revolutionary commercial roads in Nigeria” before he leaves office.

The roads according to him include Lagos Badagry- Sokoto road; Ibeju-Lekki-Port Harcourt Coastal Road and Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Also included in his list are Ilesha Akure-Owo Dual Carriageway and Ilorin-Jebba Mokwa Road.

While expressing confidence that Fashola will not disappoint Nigerians as minister in charge of roads, housing and power, Obembe said: “We know you are a performer.

“God has given you sanctified intellect to solve problems of electricity in Nigeria and to also help with the housing sector. We shall continue to pray for you and trust that you will not let Nigeria down.”

  • Be shepherd to all, Okoh tasks new Bishop

Be shepherd to all, Okoh tasks new Bishop

The Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Most Revd Nicholas Okoh, has urged the newly consecrated Bishop of the Diocese of Igbomina West Venerable Timothy Adebayo to be shepherd of all.

He spoke at the service of consecration for the new bishop at the Cathedral Church of Christ Marina, Lagos last week.

Okoh stated that the church is in need of devoted leaders conscious of the mandate given to them by God to be Shepherds of the flock of Christ under their care.

Turning to the new bishop, the Primate said:”Be a shepherd and not a wolf to the flock.”

The consecration was performed by the Primate and other Anglican Bishops in solemn sentences blended with melodic musical renditions by the Cathedral choir.

The new bishop was administered with Oaths of consecration and canonical obedience to the Primate, Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion.

The Bishop of Kwara,  The Rt. Rev. Olusegun Adeyemi, in his sermon, called on all Christians to live up to their calling.

Adeyemi noted the erosion of moral values in the world especially among Christians.

“Today, there seems to be no difference between the church and the world even though the Bible said that we are in the world but are not of the world.

“There seems to be no difference in the actions of the church and the world with acts of dishonesty, fornication prevalent among other vices,” he stressed.

Adebayo thanked the leadership of the church for his election and consecration.

He promised to be a leader with shining example.
