    Clerics pay tribute to Mbang

•He was my prayer warrior, says Prelate of Methodist church

As the world commiserate with the family of the former President of the Christian Association Of Nigeria, (CAN), the late Prelate, Methodist Church, Nigeria, His Eminence, Dr. Sunday Mbang, who died at 86 years on the 13th of May at his home in Eket in Uyo, Adeola Ogunlade spoke to some clerics who eulogied the life and times of the prelate .

The Prelate of Methodist Church, Nigeria, His Eminence, Dr. Oliver Ali Aba, said he was grateful to God for the life well spent with the late prelate, Dr. Sunday Mbang who he regarded as a father and hero.

He described the late prelate as a voice for the voiceless. “He was someone God gave to us as a gift both to the church and Nigeria. He was a man who lived a selfless life. He has left a serious legacy in the sand of times. He will not be forgotten in a fiat.”

Aba revealed that the late Mbang united the church when the church had a crisis some years back, adding that he was the head of the church for 22 years. “He was a chaplain to Professor Bolaji Idowu. He was able to take us to the promised land of peace and unity. Even until his death, he was a faithful leader,” he said.

Aba further said that the late Prelate Mbang would not sleep until he attended to the needs of the church.

The late Methodist Church prelate, aside from being the president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), was also the co-founder of The Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC). “He was the President of the World Methodist Council for five years.”

Describing the relationship he had with Mbang, he said: “Our relationship was that of father and son. He was on my prayer chain team. He believed so much in me and that was why he championed the course of my becoming the Prelate of the church last August.

“We prayed and searched the scriptures together. He was concerned about me leading the Methodist Church of Nigeria alright. After my emergence as the Prelate, I brought bishops to his house for a retreat; it was indeed a memorable moment for me in ministry.

“He was a man of God that believed so much in his maker. He spoke the truth at all times and in all situations”, he said.

Aba posited that the late Prelate was not a sycophant but an upright man, straightforward, simple, and not materialistic.

He also described Mbang as fearless and truthful to the core. “All he was looking for was for the church to grow from strength to strength. I am privileged to coordinate his burial ceremony,” Aba said.

He was uncommon, fearless servant of God-Archbishop Joseph Ojo

Also speaking, the Presiding Bishop of Calvary Kingdom Church International, Archbishop Joseph Imariabe Ojo described  Mbang as an upright, and forthright man of God who lived a good legacy for the church and the nation, adding that the late prelate was an uncommon servant of God who did not only serve God but served his country.

Ojo stated that as a pastor at the Church of God Mission in Mafoluko, Lagos State, “I always visit him in Yaba, Lagos, and his contributions toward the stability of the Christian Association of Nigeria can never be forgotten. He has made a mark in the sound of times.

“One lesson we have learned as servants of God is that we have to serve God with all our hearts because we will one day go back to the one who has called us into ministry and give an account of our stewardship while on earth,” he said.

    An exemplary religious leader–Achudume

The set man at the Victory Life Bible Church International, Apostle Lawrence Achudume, described  Mbang as an exemplary religious leader whose legacies of commitment to peaceful coexistence, religious harmony, and oneness will continue to be a point of reference.

He made this known recently while extolling the virtues of the late highly revered prelate.

According to him, Mbang who was also a former President of CAN was an embodiment of simplicity, rendered selfless service to humanity, and was tolerant to all, especially during the military era when he had several confrontations with the government at that time.

Achudume observed that the late Mbang’s kind is rare, noting that he was a detribalised Nigerian who put the military regimes of late General Sanni Abacha and General Abdulsalami Abubakar on their toes until the civilian administration was ushered in.

“No two people like Dr.  Sunday Mbang, he was a  true Nigerian, he was not ethnically biased, a fighter for justice.

The VLBC set man who had the privilege to be with the late spiritual leader a few days before he answered the home call said that Dr. Mbang bared his mind on many issues bordering on governance in the country and waited for the general elections to be over before taking a bow from this world. “The man told me a lot about Nigeria, he waited for the election to be over before departing, he prayed to witness the election and he did, he died in peace”.

Support president-elect with your prayers, Alo charges Nigerians

The Planter of Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Grace of Mercy Prayer Mountain, Adamimogo Worldwide, Prophet Sam Olu Alo has appealed to Nigerians to look beyond religion, tribe, or primordial sentiments and support the President-elect with their prayers so that he can succeed.

Alo gave this appeal at the just concluded Exodus (Ayajo Majemu) of CAC, Grace of Mercy Prayer Mountain, held over the weekend at the Adamimogo Jesus City, Lekki-Expressway, Lagos.

Tagged: ‘No More Limitation,’ brought together over 6,000 Christian faithful from Nigeria, Europe, the United States of America, and Canada which feature prayers, prophetic ministration, and dedication of the newly built Adamimogo Jesus City Altar.

According to him, the emergence of the President-elect is divinely ordained by God as the scriptures have said that no man ever receives anything from any man except it is given by God. “When God allows the president-elect to assume power, he should know that Nigerians repose a lot of confidence in him and he must work assiduously to make the country great again.”

God, he claimed, told him that the incoming administration would be the last hope for Nigeria.

He prayed for the president-elect to succeed, urging Nigerians irrespective of their religion, tribe, and language to rise up and support the president-elect with their prayers so that he can succeed.

Alo added: “70% of the newly elected officials will swear an oath either with the Bible or the Qur’an. This means that it is incumbent on them to do what is right that will bring peace and prosperity to the country.”

He noted that Nigerians are more politically conscious and well-positioned to make their choices on who they want in power across board, adding that the upset that happened in the last elections are pointers to whoever will come to power to do the right things because they will one day give account.

He also referred to the altar as the most powerful place and a place for encounters in the scriptures. There are two kinds of altars. “Altars are places where souls are lifted and are also a place to pull people down. This altar is to lift souls and also to pull down the altars of Satan and wickedness.”

Also speaking at the event, founder of Wonderland Christ Assembly, Lagos, Prophet Akinola James Fasawe lauded the humility and passion for souls that exemplify the life of Prophet Sam Olu Alo, which according to him is commendable

He urged the President-elect to embrace fresh ideas of the youths and bring everyone to the table, adding that “you can rule Nigeria and succeed with the spirit of unity and laying good legacy for generations to come.”

Ogunseye decried the state of today’s church, saying it had lost its potency and respect in the eyes of the world. He said the major assignment of winning souls had suffered tremendously.

“Most Christians are no longer followers of the teachings of the Master Teacher as expected from us as disciples,” he added.

He stressed the need to return to the practice of the old church where communal living of total and committed love for one another was in place. This, he said, would make God restore the church.

The Clergyman stated that despite many fearful prophecies before the 2023 elections, God showed Himself worthy. He, however, said all will be well with the swearing-in ceremony on May 29.

  • Foursquare GO tasks churches on youth mentorship, discipleship

Foursquare GO tasks churches on youth mentorship, discipleship

The General Overseer of the Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria, Pastor Sam Aboyeji has charged churches to create an enabling environment for the youths to express their God-given talents as well as expose them to discipleship and mentorship needed for leadership responsibilities.

Aboyeji said this at the church’s second annual interdenominational edition of the marriage, ministry, and marketplace event, tagged: ‘SWITCH 2.0.SWITCH 2.0,’ was held at the headquarters in Alagomeji, Yaba, Lagos.

    Themed: ‘Revive, Renew and Recalibrate.’

He said that without true and healthy leadership, the future of any nation, organization, or generation is threatened. “There are no spiritually inclined organisations that can succeed without spiritually healthy leaders. Everything, it rises and falls on leadership.”

He noted that in the missions and evangelistic efforts, reaching the next generation has to be intentional.

He admonished the participants not to be like Eli who assumed that his children would get it and unfortunately, they became the sons of Belial. Neither must they assume like Samuel, who was told by the nation of Israel to his face that his children were not following after him and therefore couldn’t be priests.

He noted that within the church system,” we are blessed with a large population of resourceful, vibrant, and talented youthful population: and it is the vision and focus of the leadership of the church to ensure that we create the enabling environment for this energetic segment of our demography to express their God-given talents as well as expose them to discipleship and mentorship programmes in preparation for taking on leadership responsibilities, both now and in the future.”

Aboyeji cited David in the scripture who declared his intention to pass on his relationship with God to the next generation when he said in Psalm 71: 17-18 ” O God, you have taught me from my youth: and to this day, I declare your wondrous works.  Now also when I am old and grey-headed, O God do not forsake me, Until declare your strength to this generation, your power to everyone who is to come.

“Our administration will continue to create avenues for mentoring the Nextgen-helping them to develop their gifts, allowing them to become partners in ministry and recognize that they are among the church’s most important assets,” he said

Citing former US President Franklin Roosevelt, who once said  “We cannot always build the future for our youths, but we can build our youths for the future.”

The General Overseer challenged church leaders to set good examples and provide transparent leadership for the church.

“The sins of unhealthiness witnessed in the body of Christ today are disheartening and concerning. We experience incompetence and character summersault on many sacred pulpits which portends a thorough disservice to God’s work on earth.

“The domino effect of this situation is that the errors ascribed to these ministers negatively impact all ministers and the Christian congregation, while an exemplary one exalts the kingdom of God,” he said.

In his sermon, a seasoned marriage and relationship coach and wife of the Bishop of Agape Christian Ministries Inc, Akure, Rev, Mrs Funke Felix-Adejumo challenged couples to prayerful fight for the stability of their homes and never contemplate divorce as the last result of any matter.

Adejumo said that there was a siege from the kingdom of darkness against Christian homes and the need for couples to stay together and fight against any evasion from the enemy is key.

She noted that a stable and godly-centered home would produce godly and responsible children that will be useful to God and relevant and impactful for society.

She mentioned three different types of couples which are permissive couples, absentee couples, and participatory couples, noting that participatory couples help to build a stable home.

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Eti Osa Local Government, Aremo Olusegun Oyindasola has emerged as the General Baba Ijo Orimolade Worldwide

He, therefore, called on Nigerians to use their God-given endowments to touch and make an impact on the lives of people around them.

Oyindasola,  made the call at the New Cherubim and Seraphim Church, Ijo Orimolade Headquarters, Oko Afo Area of Lagos during the church’s 2023 Shiloh anniversary where he was decorated as the General Baba Ijo Orimolade worldwide.

He said his life was about service and giving back to society.

Oyindasola said “Life is about sacrifice, life is about service, it is not how many houses you built or how many cars but how many lives you touch. I love my community, I love Lagos State and my country that is why I accepted to be the Baba Ijo of this church and of course, it is like a challenge that I needed to do more.

“I am very happy because I am from a royal house; we are both Christian and Muslim because they said all the religions belong to the palace so that is why I accepted it.”

However speaking on Tinubu’s emergence, he said this was the first time Nigeria would be having a politician as President.

“This is the only time we are having a politician as President. If you look at Obasanjo, he is not a politician. It is just Yar’Adua that is a politician; he did not stay there for long. Jonathan took over and Buhari is not a politician. This is the first time we will be having a politician as the President of Nigeria.

“A former Senator, a former Governor, a NADECO leader that fought for democracy so he knows everything. He is going to perform because he knows the game. Tinubu will give us 24 hours of light within the four years and when there is light there will be development.”

Clergyman to Tinubu: avoid religious, ethnic sentiments

The Archbishop of Lagos Province of the African Church, Ifako Diocese, Lagos State, The Most Rev’d Julius Oludotun Ogunseye, has urged President-Elect Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to give room for religious/ ethnic sentiments. He also advised him to be wary of advisers or people who are bent on dividing the nation via tribal or religious lines.

He spoke at a press conference on Friday to commemorate the commencement of the 4th Biennial Provincial Congress at the African Church Cathedral in Ifako, Lagos.

Ogunseye said:” Ensure you do not encourage tribal, religious, and political sentiments in your government. Be careful of people who whip religious sentiments as advisers or people who are bent on dividing us via tribal or religious lines. God made us who we are; a nation of many religious, cultural, and tribal affiliations,  that makes us more beautiful.”

The Clergyman noted that Nigerians deserved a good living, adding that all sectors of the nation should be rejuvenated.

He said the theme of the congress: ‘Let God arise and restore his church,’ was apt and timely as the church needed to be repositioned toward fulfilling its mandate.

  • Why some Nigerian youths are not thriving – Okonkwo

Why some Nigerian youths are not thriving – Okonkwo

Addressing the surge in the population of youth in Nigeria and the role of the church, the Dean of Catholic Church, Yaba, Lagos, Rev Father Micheal Okonkwo spoke to Adeola Ogunlade about the launching of  Young Entrepreneurs Actualization Hub (YEAH) which target 1, 000 youths, and other sundry issues.

Why your interest in youth empowerment?

I have been into youth empowerment for a very long time. Every year during my special days, I reach out to the community, vulnerable and empower people around me. In different areas where I have worked in Lagos, I look out for ways to reach out to young people in different diverse areas; in music, food processing and packaging, and various forms of empowerment in terms of maybe buying grinding machines. This is basically more or less like a passion to me.

I see a lot of youths who come to me for contacts and jobs and I try to get jobs for them but it was difficult, I later thought of entrepreneurship instead of promising jobs for them that will not come. The idea of entrepreneurs came as a result of youths trying to get jobs. Some of them have been home for four to five years in search of jobs.

To what extent have you affected their lives?

I have been able to empower a lot of youths. I love music and I have taken some of them through music class and most of them have gone up to do music professionally. I am currently doing a programme around food processing and packaging and over 100 youths have benefited from that intervention in the last one or two year.  We have empowered them and set up a plant.

Nigerian unemployment is huge and the government has come up with one form of intervention or the other, but the impact has not been felt?

Yes, it is sad that the government has carried out a lot of intervention but the unemployment figure is still huge. The youthful age is the best age to do something meaningful for themselves. It is also the time that they can put a lot of energy and guts into profitable ventures.  How do you provide an opportunity for them to get into entrepreneurship that endears me to do this? Some of the time is basically more like a passion for me. I decided to invest more in empowering the youths. What YEAH tends to actualize is to involve young people to travel through the journey of entrepreneurship and see what they can do with themselves rather than waiting for white-collar jobs.

They need to use the skills, knowledge, energy, and ideas that they have to make a marketable venture. When a youth is idle, he may be lured into doing negative things. Young people are very talented and skillful and all they need is that guidance and support to actualise their dreams in life and that is what we are committed to doing.

We want them to come together and provide a form of a network where they learn and connect with each other and are empowered in areas of knowledge, skills, contact, and access to funding. We will leverage our partners, who have seen what we have done over the years. There are a lot of people who want to partner with credible foundations who believe that if the youths are engaged, the better for society. We want to reduce unemployment through unemployment.

How will you balance your priesthood service with humanitarian gestures such as this, is your intervention open to people beyond Catholic church members?

I’m busy but I will surely make sure to embark on this project vigorously. As they say, you create time for what you love. I love youths and to see how we can empower them a little bit more. In the next five years, I want YEAH to have empowered 1, 000 youths who will become success stories. We want testimonies of youths who will come back and say that they started from nothing but today are employing workers. Money is not everything in business, you need legal backing, proper accounting, and good human relationships, among others, and we are ready to journey with them until they can be on their own. We are ready to empower between 1, 000 to 2, 000 youths depending on the fund available. For now, we are starting with the faith-based community, I mean the Christian community around us as there is my constituency. In the years to come, we are planning to expand and will make it available to everyone irrespective of their faith or social inclinations. Unemployment does not know religion or tribe, it affects everyone.

What do you think young people should do from where they are to where God wants them to be?

Young people must believe that their idea is possible. A lot of them have disillusioned and they believe that they can’t make it.  They have the wrong mental understanding of what they want to do. They also have the wrong model or mentors.  They think making it is through short-cut. The first mental reorientation is key. Many of them want the easy way out.  We must be able to help youths access the right information. Though new digital technologies have opened us to much information, many youths do not access the right information.  Everyone is unique and they need to know that there is gold inside of them but when they keep looking at other people’s goals or dreams, they will not go far in life. We need to help them redirect their dreams. Also, it is important to tell them that success does not come easy and travel with them through that journey.  Once they have passion and the right mindset, they often surpass expectations. I have learned that in my journey with youths.

Advice to the President-elect as regard youth empowerment

One beautiful thing about Nigeria is that we have huge human and financial resources. We also have beautiful ideas and lofty programmes that are top notch but the political will and sincerity of purpose in carrying them through with these programmes is the challenge.

The new administration should bring something fresh. Many youths have become disillusioned as successive governments have made promises that they have not fulfilled. You can attest to it that when our youths travel out they excel, so that tells you that it is not about Nigeria but the enabling environment for them to excel is the issue. Nigerians are innovative and energetic. Government must provide the needed environment and they will see young people fly high.

  • Grace made me emerge Bishop of Lagos West —Odedeji

Grace made me emerge Bishop of Lagos West —Odedeji

The Diocesan Bishop of Lagos West, the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Rt. Revd. James Olusola Odedeji, has stated his emergence as the Bishop of the Diocese ten years ago is a product of grace because he never lobbied for the exalted position.

Odedeji, who is also the Supervising Bishop for Lagos Diocese, spoke on the sideline of the one year remembrance service for the Rt. Dr. Peter Adelewa Adebiyi, the former Bishop of the Diocese at the Archbishop Vining memorial Church Cathedral, Ikeja, Lagos.

He said: “Every bishop should be approachable and friendly. After all, there is nothing we have that we have not received from God.

“So, I see myself daily as a product of grace. Because if age were part of the criteria, I will not be sitting here today. But one thing I know is that God has a way of lifting people.”

The outspoken cleric, who was consecrated as Bishop on February 24, 2013 and subsequently enthroned as The Lord Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos West (Anglican Communion) on April 28, 2013, said what gives him more joy is when other people are happy.

“This week is my 10th year anniversary as the Diocesan Bishop, and when I look at the journey so far, I give God all the Glory. Although the journey has not been easy, God has always been with me all the way.

“This is evidence in the many positive steps the Diocese has taken, and it is not limited to my diocese alone, in fact we have touched many lives, and are still reaching out to other dioceses, even across Nigeria.

“Apart from the many projects we have undertaken to enlarge the coast of Lagos West Diocese, we have also empowered over 500 people, paying school fees of many indigent but brilliant youths, also ensuring that we take youths off the streets through the many skill acquisition initiatives.

“I’m happier today. Whenever I go to churches, I see some of these youths that we have empowered and are doing well in their various chosen fields. We thank God for their lives, and intend to do more through various partnerships with Foundations and other well-meaning Nigerians.

“We have also bought an expanse of land. Fully paid for. We call it Clergy City. We encourage all our priests to key into the initiative by buying plots, I also bought, and we’re galvanizing resources around us to actually make it affordable to all our clergymen.

Speaking on late RT. Rev’d Peter Adelewa Adebiyi, Odedeji described him as a good Christian, teacher and spiritual leader who lived a worthy life committed to the service for God and humanity.

“Baba Adebiyi was totally committed to the service of God till he breathed his last at the ripe age of 79. We thank God because this is a celebration of life. He lived in God’s service, an evidence of the grace of God, he imparted many people and helped many to find purpose and meaning.

Dr. Odedeji explained that those who accepted His Son, Jesus Christ, here on earth should not fear death because they have a hope of eternity with God, just as he said the late Bishop Adebiyi gave his life and lived for God, which he said had given him a hope of a hereafter.

Bishop Odedeji also advised the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to see himself as father of the nation by reaching out to every part of the country and also make peace with his opponents in the last presidential election.

“The election has come and gone, and it is time for reconciliation. He has been declared the winner, the next stage is to bring everybody together because there is a huge task ahead, and he can’t do it alone,” he added.
