Effective use of technology by retailers

Changes in customer behaviour and technology advancement are ongoing causes of evolution in the marketing world, consequently leading to major shifts in the retail industry. Hence, retailers that understand consumer behaviour and adapt to it through the use of technology will thrive.

To achieve this, retailers must either invest in or take advantage of available technologies that lead to greater customer satisfaction and make all business processes easier to handle. Here are some ways retailers are putting technology to effective use in their businesses:

Moving Businesses Forward: Ultimately, technology is being leveraged for advancement of all forms of business. While many retailers embrace digital medium to showcase their wares, those in the informal retail market are now leveraging online shopping for inventory. With the help of the likes of Alerzo and others, retailers now order for stocks online and get them delivered at their shops. Informal retailers are now benefiting a lot from technology.

Ease and comfort: Consumers embrace online shopping for the ease and comfort it gives. However, the comfort technology offers covers for sellers. ” Since I started ordering my goods online, I’ve been able to save a lot of money on transportation. But what I enjoy the most about it is the comfort. I don’t have to go to the market. Just for me to open my app on this same phone, select what I want, make payment and the next day I get my shop filled up again,” said an informal retailer who shops for her goods via Alerzoshop app.

Best prices: one of the beauty of technology is that it eliminates many barriers and makes things easier. Likewise, retailers using technology in their businesses are able to offer customers more value at reasonable prices. For instance, an informal retailer shopping directly from manufacturers via B2B app, will get best deals on inventories and also be able to sell at best prices to customers.

Ease of Marketing: Through social media, many people in every corner of their homes have become retailers making thousands and millions of Naira. No physical shop needed. No rent paid. Just data and a smartphone to provide information about products with photographs that draw people towards the business. Those who are able to add some basic digital marketing skills, get more visibility, sales and turnover.

Technology Makes Forecasting Possible: Nigeria is full of retailers, but very few understand the power of proper forecasts for business growth. For retailers in the informal market, restocking via B2B platforms will give access to insights and data from these platforms that will help understand present customer behaviour and what the future trends will be. This enables proper and informed business decisions.

Online shopping is a huge trend that has come to stay. Hence, retailers, especially in the informal markets, with their immense importance, cannot afford to stay frozen back in time.

The project got its Approval-To-Construct in April 2018 and was on FastTrack for completion. By July 2019, the equipment fabrication had been completed with Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) and company representatives witnessing the Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) in China which lasted for over a month.

According to Johnson Akinyemi, the projects General Manager, “when completed, the project will supply daily about 60-metric-tonnes of LPG (cooking gas) to the domestic market. Professor Anthony Adegbulugbe further expressed his satisfaction in the progress that the Company has made in its efforts to ensuring the green-house effect is eliminated completely in GEIL operations.  In his words, “we will continue to strive to position our Company as one of the elite companies to deliver the energy the world deserves through a powerful combination of capital efficiency, low costs and sustainable development”.

He further explained that contrary to extant and widely accepted industry belief, Green Energy International Limited has been able to achieve these fascinating results without jeopardizing traditional and critical key financial key performance indicators that organizations use to track, measure, and analyze the financial health of organizations.

“The Company’s undisputable metrics has demonstrated that its unique underlying framework for success has delivered financial sustainability to its stakeholders that is competitive not only with our direct E&P peers, but the broader market.  In terms of sustainable development, it is safe to admit that Green Energy International Limited (GEIL) is surely ahead of the pack.  It is a Company that has have intentionally chosen the path least travelled and have emerged as an undisputed leader amongst our peers.” He concluded.

In terms of safety performance, the Company’s HSE GM, Mr. Chuks Igbokwe affirms that Green Energy International Limited has developed and implemented its own program “Life-Saving Actions and Barrier Checks” in all its area of operations.  “These Life-Saving Actions are meant to draw attention to activities that could most likely to lead to a fatality and implementing the critical, life-saving actions over which an individual has control. This approach is in line with the Company’s established and enduring core beliefs at GEIL, that safety is not the absence of incidents, but rather it is the presence of defenses.”

  • Seven ways tech can help get you on track with your resolutions

Seven ways tech can help get you on track with your resolutions

The new year is only a few weeks old, but for many, the optimism for fresh opportunities and goal setting that informed their new year’s resolutions may be starting to disappear.

If you’ve already gone off track , adopting technology can help ensure you achieve your goals.. Here are seven ways that technology can help you conquer 2022.

    1. Stay motivated, ask Assistant: One way to make sure that you stay on track with your set goals is to stay consistently motivated. Using your mobile device or phone, simply ask Google Assistant: “Hey Google, how do I stay motivated?” You will get a list of suggestions from how to regularly review your goals, how to find mentors, how to surround yourself with positive people and how to exercise among other motivational tips.

    2. Set reminders, be punctual: If you’re looking to be more punctual this year,  set reminders so you don’t lose track of time. You can easily create reminders with the help of Google Assistant. Using your mobile device or phone, simply say, “Hey Google, set a reminder”, or “Hey Google, remind me to attend a meeting at 7am.”  Google Assistant will go on to set a reminder and send you a notification when it is close to the time. This way, you can be sure that you will always be on time.

    3. Eat healthy, count calories:  Are you planning to start your healthy eating journey? You can search for healthy diet recipes for satisfying meals. You can also watch a variety of videos on YouTube to learn how to make healthy foods at home. Also, you can check the amount of calories in single ingredient foods by simply asking Google Assistant. For instance, you can say, “Ok  Google, how many calories are in bananas?” This way, you are conscious about what you eat, whether you are trying to lose weight, gain weight or simply maintain a healthy lifestyle.

    4. Keep in touch, Meet friends: The Covid-19 pandemic limited social activities like travelling, seeing friends and going out. Even with the recommendations now to ease Covid-19 travel restrictions, connecting virtually is still the adopted norm to keep in touch with friends. If you vowed to be more sociable this year, you can connect with friends and family using  Google Meet. Just set up a time to meet and share the link with your friends to join. Using Meet allows you to save time and the hassle of planning actual physical hangouts. Most of all, it is flexible as you can join meetings on the go from your mobile devices, on the Meet app or Gmail.

    5. Learn something new:  If your goal for 2022 was to increase your knowledge on a subject matter, learn new interesting things or develop a skill, YouTube videos are a treasure trove of knowledge. For instance, you can watch videos that teach you how to play an instrument, cook like a pro, learn video editing or photography. There are lots of videos on YouTube that can help you take the initiative to learn without the assistance of anyone. If you plan to accelerate your digital skills as well, for your business or career, the Google digital skills for Africa program offers free online training.

    6. Fitness goals, workout devices: Improve your workouts by connecting a fitness device to your Android phone. There are a host of devices from fitness watches, to heart rate monitors or foot pods that will pair with thousands of apps available in the Play Store, to help you reach your fitness goals. Throw in a YouTube playlist of your favourite songs, and you’re sure to get your heart rate up in no time.

    7. Explore new destinations:  Whether you are planning to travel out of the country or just to explore more local destinations this year, Google Maps helps beyond just providing navigation, getting alternative routes and real time information about traffic jams. You can also search for exciting places such as restaurants, parks, tourist attractions, cultural sites, beaches and natural areas that you would like to visit.

For resolutions to be successful, they should follow the SMART principle and be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timebound bound. Technology provides the tools for you to tackle your goals in the smartest way possible.

Nigeria to have widest 5G coverage in Africa by 2022 — Pantami

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Pantami, has assured that by 2022, Nigeria would have the largest Fifth Generation (5G) coverage in Africa.

Pantami gave the assurance at the auction of the 3.5 gigahertz (Ghz) spectrum organised by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on Monday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that two telecommunication companies are expected to emerge as winners after the auction of the 3.5 gigahertz (Ghz) spectrum

The minister noted that 5G would solve some of the security challenges in the country since the technology provides real-time services and platforms.

“We have already made a number of giant strides in the development of our digital economy and the development of 5G networks will further support our efforts.

“This will harness the social and economic benefits that come along with it.

“It will serve as a catalyst for the successful implementation of our National Digital Economy Development and Strategy (NDEPS) for a digital Nigeria,” he said.

He noted that the National Frequency Management Council (NFMC) would ensure that the required spectrum for 5G standard was made available in the most timely manner.

He said that this would enable investment, innovation and competition in the development of 5G services for the benefit of consumers and businesses.

He said that the 5G trial was critically reviewed by stakeholders with a view to understanding its health and security implications.

“The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), organs of the United Nations, have confirmed that the deployment will not cause any adverse health effects and are safe,” Pantami said.

NAN reports that the NCC had announced that three telecoms companies were qualified as approved bidders for 5G permits after meeting all requirements for participating in the licensing process.

The three qualified bidders for the 3.5 GHz spectrum are namely: MTN Nigeria, Mafab Communications Ltd and Airtel Networks Ltd, who participated in the software-based simulated auction.

They used the Ascending Clock Auction System for the mock session.

Each bidder is expected to go through a bidder room, which will begin with an opening-round where all bidders are expected to participate.

The Department of Security Service (DSS) would monitor the officials in each room and nobody will be allowed to leave the room until the process is over.

The Commission in November fixed the price for the bid at N75 billion ($197.4 million).

The telecommunications giants, however, asked for a slash on the licensing fee.

  • Business Process Outsourcing in Nigeria

    Business Process Outsourcing in Nigeria

Outsourcing as a key business strategy has been used by companies in various industries for decades. Competitive pressures have forced companies to look objectively and critically at business processes. Outsourcing came about from the American terminology meaning “outside resourcing” meaning to get resources from outside of the company. The National Outsourcing Policy and Institutional Framework of Nigeria, (2007) stated that “outsourcing occurs anytime one enterprise makes a contract with another to perform a process that is normally done internally by the first enterprise”.

Business process outsourcing (BPO) is a type of outsourcing wherein a third-party service provider is employed to carry out one or more business functions in a company. BPO is the delegation of the company’s processes which is considered as non-core to an external service provider to administer and manage it accordingly. This article will discuss Business Process Outsourcing in Nigeria and provide tips on what to look out for when considering BPO service in Nigeria.

A company’s non-core business process consists of the following: corporate governance such as legal, finance, planning, public and government relations, accounting, building services, management, human resource management activities such as recruiting, hiring, training, compensating, and dismissing personnel, technology, and process development such as maintenance, automation, design or redesign of equipment, hardware, software, procedures, and technical knowledge. Hiring software engineers in Nigeria is one of the new types of business process outsourcing in Nigeria.

Globally, the term BPO is more commonly used to describe call center solutions, but BPOs typically offer other services in addition to call center. A leading BPO provider in Nigeria driving Nigeria’s outsourcing agenda is DelonApps. The company offers unique services like offshore BPO, hiring of software engineers and data scientists, high-tech outsourcing like remote robot pilot services, telemarketing, software development outsourcing, experienced virtual assistant, software developer training to large companies, as well as HR outsourcing. According to some of their publicly available documents, they have strong aspiration to hire over 1,000 Nigerians in 2022 and they are also the #1 provider of software developer training in Nigeria.

Businesses across the globe are usually affected by the external environment as much as they are affected by the competition. Global factors that influence businesses are legal, political, social, technological, and economic. Understanding these factors is therefore important while developing a business strategy.

In any given country, top companies contribute massively towards economic development by setting objectives that are geared towards economic development. Most organizations have adopted strategies to help them maximize profits such that every company has its competitive strategy.

Many developing countries with good communication infrastructure find BPO lucrative. It creates employment opportunities for its citizens as well as generating substantial income for citizens whether skilled or semi-skilled. BPO is very competitive and companies that provide BPO services require very strict professionalism as well as adherence to set standards.

The adoption of BPO may have been driven by the need to comply with the government’s policy limiting operations mainly to IT services and other areas classified as back office, front office, and middle office (National Outsourcing Policy and Institutional Framework, 2007). Therefore, BPO in Nigeria may be a result of a singular objective aimed at eliminating some internal activities to external suppliers who could undertake them effectively and efficiently. IT is the most outsourced business activity today in Nigeria, because it is highly specialized. But companies are beginning to embrace low-skill business process outsourcing to reduce their expenses.

Factors that Influence Business Process Outsourcing

Various factors influence companies’ decisions to outsource. These factors include enabling existing staff to concentrate on core activities of the organization or specialization area, focusing on achieving key strategic objectives, lowering, or stabilizing overhead costs thereby gaining a cost advantage over the competition.

The main drivers behind Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) today need to be able to accelerate resources for other purposes, improve company focus, make capital funds available, reduce operational costs, reduce risk, and accessibility of world-class capabilities.

Many organizations around the world, are burdened with having to bear headquarters and support costs of constantly managing in-source activities. one major advantage of outsourcing is the decrease in executive time spent managing peripheral activities, therefore, freeing top management to focus more on the core of its business.

Effect of BPO on the Nigerian economy

Nigeria currently controls $285.8 million of the combined African domestic and international global business services (GBS) sub-sector estimated to be $15.1 billion and is expected to grow to $19.8 billion by 2023.

Workforce capacity through GBS, also known as Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) ranges from 1,200 in Mozambique to over 261,000 workers in South Africa. In Nigeria, BPO is said to employ 16,540 people.

Also, according to the ‘2021 Africa Global Business Services (GBS) Benchmarking and Market Report’ conducted by Knowledge Executive between February and July, the monthly cost of a contact center agent in Africa can range from $546 to as little as $175 per month.

The report claimed that the continent has an abundance of educated youths within its labor pool, with many equipped with multilingual proficiency in Arabic, English, French, Portuguese, and some German, Chinese and Italian expertise in some instances.

The report noted that Africa’s largest economy by GDP ($448 billion), Nigeria, boasts of a well-established ICT sector, and is the largest on the continent. It said that this feature serves as an excellent foundation for developing the country’s GBS/BPO industry, “which is already valued at an estimated $286.8 million, employing 16,540 workers.

Also, according to the Director-General of the National Information Technology Agency (NITDA)Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, Business Process Outsourcing is critical to driving Nigeria’s digital economy. Business Process Outsourcing is one of the emerging services we can provide digitally. As of 2019, according to Grand View Research, the global business process outsourcing market size was valued at USD 221.5 billion and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) OF 8.0% FROM 2020 TO 2027.

THE COVID-19 pandemic has forced different organizations to cut bottom-line costs, leverage technology that helps to reduce operational costs, and naturally, outsourcing with all of its inherent benefits, is a strong viable option for many organizations.

BPO services range from manufacturing products, providing back-office workforce, or can be providing customer service support for companies. As mentioned, a BPO company processes different tasks regardless of how big or small based on the need of its clients, meaning there are no limitations on what work can be outsourced to a BPO company.

Key Reasons Why BPO is Important

    1) Productivity

BPO services increase the focus of outsourcing firms to concentrate on core business activities, thus increasing production. Further, it helps higher management to spend more time on making business-related strategies rather than managing less corporate details.

    2) Best resource utilization

Top BPO companies in Nigeria empower the ideal use of a scarce resource. Outsourcing serves to increase productivity and reallocate the assets. This increases efficiency and profitability.

    3) Better human resource allocation

A financially savvy human resource department is yet another imperative component of the benefits of BPO. Organizations today, require profitable and proficient human assets that can create economies of scale. This is one of the top reasons that make BPOs attractive for organizations.

    4) Cost reduction

Cost reduction is noteworthy and welcomes by every business. BPO helps in diminishing expense along with increasing efficiency and raising funds independently.

Locating effective BPO service providers is crucial to any organization. Business process outsourcing can make or break your business depending on the quality and efficiency of the employee. The best BPO service provider is the one who gives a higher rate of return.

There are a few BPOs in Nigeria but most of them operate solely as call centers and are focused on the local market. DelonApps is a top call center service provider in Nigeria but the company is perhaps the only true BPO company in Nigeria that offer many additional innovative and quality services alongside the regular call center service. Unlike their competitors who have been focused a lot on the Nigerian market and succeeded a lot at this, the company focuses a lot on the offshore market alongside the local market. With vast expertise across different business lines including operating the #1 job portal for IT jobs in Nigeria, DelonApps is helping to create a lot of jobs in Nigeria.

Choosing the Right Business Process Outsourcing Service

Choosing the right Business Process outsourcing service for your company is as good as hiring the right talents for your company. A bad hire can either slow down work productivity or make a wreck of your business. BPO helps clients build customer loyalty and stronger relationships to improve business performance over time. They are like your best friends actively involved in ensuring the success of your business by consistently generating lead and customer loyalty. So, you don’t want to make the wrong choice.

Pricing- This is one of the first things to look out for when selecting among good outsourcing companies. Truth be told, the best outsourcing firms aren’t always the ones with the lowest pricing but you could find a few good BPO companies that have mastered the effective use of technology to reduce the cost of operation. These are usually able to provide premium services at affordable rates.

Service – This is the next thing to consider when partnering with an outsourcing company. A conscious consideration needs to be made regarding the type of service(s) the outsourcing company employs. Do they specialize in inbound or outbound service? Or are they great with both inbound and outbound? Do they offer the omnichannel service? Or is their core competency non-voice service?

For instance, when considering the right outsourcing firm to partner with, you would also want to consider if an around-the-clock service will be the best fit for your business or a few hours of service per day. The type of service being employed by the outsourcing firm is worth considering because as your firm grows, you need to be sure the outsourced company would be able to scale up alongside your company’s growing requirements.

Culture and accent- These are also very important when trying to select a BPO provider. If a European client hires an Asian BPO company whose BPO agents have a very thick local accent, the client’s customers will not be happy, and this relationship will not go well. Besides the accent, it is also better for the BPO agents to understand the certain culture of the client’s retail customers. Most are happy with their client when the Business Process agents can communicate nicely with them.

How the outsourcing company trains their staffs is also an important factor that needs to be considered before signing those papers. “Does it provide extensive training and hire experienced agents? What kinds of techniques are taught to those who will answer your customers’ questions?”

One of the ways to check is to try calling them occasionally at different times to check how long it takes them to answer a call and how trained they are in answering calls in terms of manner, tone, and choice of words. Some companies offer trial versions, and they can be tested during this trial version.

Another factor to look out for when outsourcing a business is the outsourcing firm’s technology. It is important while one is outsourcing a business solution, one should look out for AI trends. Understanding that poor technology can slow down progress in customers’ interaction, it is very important to you, as the client company is aware of the technology employed by the outsourcing company.

Upgrading one’s existing infrastructure can be quite expensive, as a result, small companies choose to outsource companies that already employ these technologies. Due to how important a customers’ experience with your product and/or company is, when outsourcing, you need to look out for what technology they use and how it conforms with your company’s specific business needs. We understand how expensive the right technologies can be, but that is one of the reasons why they are being outsourced anyway.

Make sure to look out for the security measures being used by the outsourcing company. Whether a BPO company processes its services on-site or otherwise, the client needs to discuss this ahead with the BPO provider to agree on appropriate cybersecurity architecture and strategies before the commencement of service. This has become especially critical at this time, where security and data privacy are essential requirements for top businesses.

    Outsourcing; Nigeria vs Philippines

Nigeria aims to become a global destination for Business Process Outsourcing (BPO). Recently, with a population slightly over a hundred million, Philippines dethroned India as the Business Process Outsourcing capital of the world. The Philippines BPO sector single handedly generated over 1.2 million direct jobs and 22 billion USD in revenues in 2015, making it the largest source of income in the country.

However, despite achieving such great figures, a country like Nigeria that boasts of a population of 200 million provides a larger field for the success of BPO. Not only does Nigeria boasts far higher population than the Philippines, the country also boasts of an incredible population of native English speakers. according to Wikipedia, Nigeria ranks 2nd only behind the United States in countries who speak English as their first language with about 18% or 37 million Nigerians capable of speaking English language fluently. The Philippines on the other hand, have roughly about 36 thousand citizens who speak English as their first language.

Also, as mentioned earlier, unlike the Philippines, Nigerians think first in English, and this enhances their communication. It is because right from childhood, every educational facility is groomed to train children how to speak English first rather than their native cultural language.

    Outsourcing; Nigeria vs India

The comparison between Nigeria and India is quite similar with the comparison between Nigeria and Philippines. India was the leading BPO country many years ago, but Philippines is arguably the #1 country for BPO at this time. Native English communication or better English communication is the edge Nigeria has over India.

In addition to several regional languages and dialects, India has a non-English national language – Hindi that many of them prefer speaking. So the fact that they tend to think in their local language makes many of them non-native speakers like Nigerians.

    BPOs create low-skill jobs

I cannot end this article without talking about the huge job opportunities that well-run BPOs can create in Nigeria. It is a fact that there are many unemployed Nigerians who don’t have high-tech skills and most cities in Nigeria don’t have adequate private job opportunities for their residents. The United States and Europe helped China to develop greatly by creating manufacturing plants in China to hire low-skill staff that would otherwise be more expensive in the West. Recent US feud with China and rising labor costs in China creates great potential opportunity for Nigeria and the rest of Africa.

BPOs offer job opportunities to people all around Nigeria. So if you are fresh out of school and looking for a job, please look for BPO jobs around you as a stop-gap until you find something better.
