  • FG launches space technology initiative to generate $50bn annually

FG launches space technology initiative to generate $50bn annually

The federal government has unveiled an initiative aimed at generating $50 billion annually through the use of space technology.

The initiative, known as the Presidential Initiative on Revenue Optimization and Digitalization via Space Technology, will se the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) and the National Space Research and Development Agency (NARSDA) collaborating to ramp up revenue for the nation using space technology.

Speaking at the launch of the initiative in Abuja on Thursday, the Chairman of RMAFC, Dr. Mohammed Bello Shehu, said that the Renewed Hope Agenda of the current administration could only be realized through the implementation of efficient and innovative revenue generation strategies.

He stressed the need for stakeholders to embrace modern technology to unlock new streams of revenue that would support national economic growth and development.

“The traditional sources and methods of revenue generation are no longer in vogue and, more importantly, are not sufficient to meet the evolving needs of our great nation,” Shehu stated. “Key stakeholders must think innovatively and collaboratively to unlock new opportunities for economic growth, all in the interest of our beloved country.”

Shehu further stated the role of NARSDA in conceptualizing the initiative, pointing out that other nations have significantly boosted their revenue through space technology.

He called on relevant stakeholders to collaborate with RMAFC and NARSDA to harness the potential of space-based solutions for economic progress.

In his address, the Director General of NARSDA, Dr. Mathew Olumide Adepoju, stated that the agency had already begun leveraging advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and robotics to drive the initiative.

He revealed that a proposal had been submitted to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to integrate space science, innovation, and technology into Nigeria’s economic strategy to curb revenue leakages and create new revenue streams.

“Our initial analysis has shown that we can help the country generate up to $50 billion annually,” Adepoju said. “We are determined to achieve this together with the RMAFC Chairman, who has fully embraced this initiative. However, we cannot do it alone, which is why this stakeholder engagement with all revenue-generating agencies is imperative.”

Adepoju also addressed concerns about Nigeria’s status in global security and surveillance, stating that the country must not be described as a “blind spot” in the Gulf of Guinea.

He argued that incorporating space technology into national operations would not only enhance revenue generation but also strengthen security efforts.

“Our analytics show that many internal conflicts are linked to solid minerals and other natural resources. By mainstreaming space science and technology into our activities, we can track these resources more effectively, curb illegal activities, and improve national security,” he explained.

The NARSDA boss stated that Nigeria’s infrastructure development goals could only be achieved if all available resources were efficiently managed and equitably distributed.

He called for full cooperation from all relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to ensure the success of the Presidential Initiative on Revenue Optimization and Digitalization via Space Technology.

  • HP announces 2025 digital equity accelerator to drive global digital inclusion

HP announces 2025 digital equity accelerator to drive global digital inclusion

To bridge the global digital divide and build the future of work, HP Inc. and the HP Foundation are launching the 2025 Digital Equity Accelerator and its call for submissions.

This year, the Accelerator has evolved to focus on equipping historically disconnected youth and adults with the critical skills needed to participate and thrive in an increasingly digital economy. Selected nonprofit organizations will receive $100,000 in HP Foundation grants, HP technology ($100,000 value), and six months of programmatic support to scale digital equity solutions.

For the first time, HP is offering the Accelerator program to four countries to further expand its geographic reach. For the 2025 program, nonprofits in Greece, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Spain, including those using AI to advance impact, are invited to apply. HP will accept applications until 11:59 p.m. EST on February 12, 2025.

“At HP, we believe in harnessing technology to drive positive, lasting change, and we are dedicated to closing the digital divide for youth and adults who have been historically disconnected from digital access so they can succeed in an increasingly competitive digital economy,” said Michele Malejki, Global Head of Social Impact, HP Inc., and Director, HP Foundation.

“As we enter our fourth year of the Digital Equity Accelerator, we are inspired by the progress made so far and are excited to see the innovative, AI-powered solutions that the 2025 cohort will bring forward to address digital equity challenges.”

A $1 trillion-plus digital divide is limiting billions from achieving equal access to educational and economic opportunities. Through the Digital Equity Accelerator, HP aims to create a more equitable world through access to technology, digital literacy & AI, and quality skills content. The Accelerator helps organizations strengthen capacity and scale impact for digital equity solutions, particularly among traditionally excluded people.

Since 2022, Accelerator alumni have driven progress for many, advancing digital equity for educators, women, and disconnected youth.

HP has strategically selected countries to address specific digital equity gaps. These countries represent diverse challenges in digital equity and align with HP’s commitment to fostering global digital inclusion.

Despite Africa’s largest Information and Communications Technology (ICT) market, Nigeria only has 28 percent of its population using the internet, leaving many youth without employment or education opportunities.

While Spain ranks high in digital skills, there are still disparities, particularly among children and older generations, leaving gaps in access and job readiness for underserved communities.

Greece faces significant digital skill gaps, particularly among refugees, with only 52% of the population equipped with basic digital skills.

According to BPS data for 2023, 25.80 percent of Indonesian youth are classified as NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training), with female youth facing double the unemployment rate of their male counterparts.

This underscores the urgent need to address the digital skills gap and empower young Indonesians to thrive in the digital era.

Since 2021, HP has been on a journey to accelerate digital equity for 150 million people by 2030, having reached 45 million people through 2023.

HP’s evolving focus this year on equipping youth and adults with critical skills reflects its commitment to bridging the digital divide and supporting economic inclusion.

  • BudgIT condemns govt attacks on NGOs demanding budget transparency in Sokoto

BudgIT condemns govt attacks on NGOs demanding budget transparency in Sokoto

BudgIT, a civic-tech organisation that focuses on promoting transparency and accountability in public finance management, has condemned the Sokoto government’s attacks on non-governmental organizations that are seeking budget accountability.

It said the attacks by the state government were unwarranted and undermined the principles of transparency and accountability in governance.

BudgIT’s Research Analyst, Temitope Odeyemi, said in a statement on Friday that governments exist to serve the public, and as such, they must be held accountable to their citizens.

He added that accountability in government was not optional, but a fundamental requirement of democracy.

The Nation recalled Sokoto State Governor, Dr. Ahmad Aliyu, on 29 November 2024. presented a N526.88bn budget proposal for the 2025 fiscal year to the state House of Assembly, which was subsequently passed on 17 December 2024.

Odeyemi emphasised that holding the government accountable in public finance management is an essential principle of democracy.

He said: “Civic responsibility is vital in a democracy, enabling citizens to hold leaders accountable and ensuring that government actions reflect the people’s interests. Accusing the Sokoto State Government of fiscal opacity is not overreach; it reflects citizens’ rights to know how public resources are managed. BudgIT and like minded CSOs are vehicles of citizen hope, aspiration and collectivity and translate the yearnings of citizens to action.

“States are not private enterprises, and dismissing accountability by claiming NGOs have no constitutional mandate undermines democracy. Governments exist to serve the public, and as such,

they must be held accountable to their citizens. This accountability is not optional; it is a fundamental requirement of democracy. Transparency goes beyond satisfying state assemblies; it includes active engagement with the public. Budget documents are public documents; everyone, including the citizens and Civil Society Organizations, should have access to them.

“Criticising NGOs for exposing gaps does not address those gaps; it perpetuates them. An accountable government should not become defensive; instead, it should reflect on its performance to understand why it has fallen short of expectations and best practices.”

Odeyemi said that instead of attempting to suppress NGOs, the state government should embrace accountability and promote collaboration with civil society organisations (CSOs) to improve governance.

He said: “This partnership benefits citizens with a more responsive government and allows administrations to stand out among peers by demonstrating their commitment to good governance.

“By viewing governance challenges as opportunities for collaboration, citizens, CSOs, and the government can achieve a mutually beneficial outcome.”

  • Financial inclusion: NIMC, NIBSS, others roll out digital cards with multiple wallets

Financial inclusion: NIMC, NIBSS, others roll out digital cards with multiple wallets

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), the Nigeria Interbank Settlement Systems (NIBSS), AfriGO and other stakeholders are set to roll out digital cards with multiple wallets to drive financial inclusion and improve Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The digital cards with multiple wallets would allow Nigerians to have access to government services in all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of government, while it would also provide platforms for students to access government loans.

Already, Nigerian farmers captured under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, (FMAFS) have embraced the digital cards for government services in areas of provision of agric loans, seedlings and other inputs that would improve food production and security.

According to the Director General/Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, the biometric NIMC-enabled cards have multiple features to address the socio-economic needs of Nigerians in line with the 8 point Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

Coker-Odusote, who addressed newsmen at the headquarters of NIMC in Abuja on plans regarding the launch of the cards, was flanked by the Managing Director/CEO of NIBSS, Mr Premier Oiwoh,  the Managing Director/CEO of AfriGO, Mrs Ebehije Momoh and the Managing Director of Data Mining Company, Mr Femi Akande.

She said the stakeholders were brought together to explain the different benefits associated with the digital cards to Nigerians and the general impact it would have on the economy as President Tinubu hoped to drive his welfare programmes using digital identity verification as a major platform.

The NIMC boss said the multiple purpose cards would be available to citizens, home and abroad and legitimate residents who could use the cards for various transactions, especially payments of water and electricity bills, transportation services, and shopping, among others.

The cards, she explained, could be used off line and online to provide services for unbanked citizens in rural areas and bring on board those whose businesses required government support for survival, noting that with such opportunities, Nigerians would need no god father to access government services and support.

Coker-Odusote said the digital cards which come with various security features cannot be forged as the biometric information of owners are embedded in them, emphasising that they were made to address current needs of government to ensure that there are no ghost beneficiaries of government palliatives, loans and other benefits.

She assured that the cards would turn around the economy by improving revenue generation and the country’s GDP as states governments and the private sectors would be part and parcel of it.

Speaking on behalf of other stakeholders, the CEO of AfriGO, Mrs Ebehije Momoh said the launch of the cards would change the narratives for the country’s economy as it would ensure that the flow of money remained within the economy.

Mrs Momoh said: “The digital card is a domestic solution to drive financial inclusion and provide cost effectiveness and transparency within the systems. It would ensure data sovereignty and autonomy, and we all know that data is significant to improve our economy.

“This card will help reduce cost, especially dollar given to banks. Domestic payments are important to support welfare and social interventions services of government, so it will help drive cashless policy and ensure that our monies remain within the economy.

“We have about 26 banks already issuing the cards and it is hoped that more would come on board. Nigeria is the first country to come up with this innovation, and surely it would enhance micro-medium enterprises across the country.”

  • Tinubu will drive Nigeria to a trillion dollars economy, prosperity, says Minister

Tinubu will drive Nigeria to a trillion dollars economy, prosperity, says Minister

Nigeria under President Bola Tinubu would soon become a trillion-dollar economy despite the initial difficulties, the Minister of Communications. Innovations and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani said in Abuja on Monday.

Dr Tijani said Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) would increase substantially within the next two years with 21 percent of it coming from the Information and Communications Technology sector (ICT).

He assured that President Tinubu would drive Nigeria to prosperity within the next few months, notwithstanding the initial pain.

The Minister who spoke alongside his counterpart in the Ministry of Youth Development, Engr Ayodele Olawande submitted that the government would focus on Youth empowerment, innovations, and entrepreneurship to increase the country’s GDP.

Dr Tijani and Engr Olawande spoke at the Public Servant Training Institute, Kubwa, Abuja, during the commencement of the Training programmes for 500 Data Protection Officers (DPOs) for the National Certification for Data Protection, Nigeria and West Africa.

Tijani said the present administration is investing heavily in the ICT sector as a major driver of the national economy with specific attention to the deployment of Artificial Intelligence, (AI), digital transformation of government services, connecting the citizens with digital medical services and infrastructures, and promoting entrepreneurship and innovations.

He explained that Nigeria’s economy would soon transform to over a trillion dollar economy, not just by the sheer size of its population coupled with the preponderance of vibrant youths, but with policies envisioned under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

He urged the beneficiaries of the National Certification training programmes to take the training seriously as a unique government investment built on the foundation of trust for the pioneer beneficiaries.

The Minister of Youth Development, Engr Olawande said the present administration is recalibrating the mandate of the Ministry for far-reaching collaborations with other Ministries, Agencies, and Departments to promote inclusiveness and empowerment and create opportunities for Nigerian youths to excel in all fields of endeavours.

The National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria Data Protection Commission, NDPC, Dr Vincent Olatunji said about 3, 000 Data Protection Officers were initially penciled down for training, but due to financial constraints, the numbers were reduced because it took 2,000 dollars to train and secure Certification for each officer.

He said Certification is a global phenomenon that would open myriads of opportunities for the officers as there are millions of jobs waiting for them globally.

Dr Olatunji said: “Currently in Europe, 94 of companies lack people with requisite skill sets to drive the economy and in Nigeria, it’s about 99 percent. Human capital is key and it is estimated that within the next two years, about 170 million jobs will be available globally with specific skill sets for professionals.

“Nigeria cannot be left behind, especially in the areas of data safety and privacy. We have within the last two years trained 55, 000 Nigerians on data protection and other relevant issues in the data ecosystem. But we need to do more because we have about 500,000 registered data controllers and each of them must employ at least a certified data protection officer. “

The event was attended by the Director General of NITDA, Malam Kashifu Inuwa, the Managing Director of NigComSat, Mrs Jane Egerton-Idehen, the Managing Director of Nigeria Lottery Commission, Mr Lanre Gbajabiamila and the Commissioner of police in charge of National Cybersecurity Centre, Force Headquarters, CP, Uche Ifeanyi Henry.

  • QNET’s Decades of Growth and Success Show It’s Not a Scam

QNET’s Decades of Growth and Success Show It’s Not a Scam

From its beginnings in 1998, QNET has grown into a global lifestyle and wellness powerhouse, offering premium products through a distinctive grassroots business model that spans more than 25 countries. The company’s expansion challenges persistent misconceptions about its business practices, demonstrating a legitimate enterprise that connects consumers with high-quality wellness, luxury, and lifestyle products.

“Our business model is direct selling, meaning that we are a people-to-people business,” Trevor Kuna, chief marketing officer, explained. “We develop products, people that want to earn money from business, they promote our products to other people, so it is basically like word-of-mouth marketing.”

The direct selling industry often faces skepticism, particularly when critics conflate legitimate business practices with scams and pyramid schemes. However, QNET’s revenue structure fundamentally differs from scams, providing micro-entrepreneurship opportunities rather than traditional employment. Independent representatives operate their own businesses, selling QNET’s products and building sales teams.

The direct selling industry requires strict adherence to ethical practices and transparency, which is why QNET provides comprehensive training and support to its independent representatives, ensuring all activities align with legal and ethical standards.

    QNET Fighting Scams Through Education

QNET maintains offices and agencies in over 25 countries, supporting a growing network of independent representatives and customers. Its Global Support Centre has received numerous industry awards and operates in 12 languages across 14 international hubs. This support network ensures customers and representatives receive assistance in their preferred language, with trained specialists available across multiple time zones.

QNET’s commitment to quality products sets it apart from questionable operations. The company’s extensive product line includes the HomePure Zayn air purifier, known for its advanced technology and efficiency, and the luxury Swiss watch and jewelry line Bernhard H. Mayer, which blends traditional timepiece craftsmanship with modern aesthetics.

QNET’s corporate foundation has supported community development projects in dozens of cities worldwide. The company holds memberships and industry accreditations with international trade bodies and has garnered numerous awards for service excellence. This commitment to corporate responsibility extends to environmental initiatives, demonstrated at their recent V-Malaysia 2024 convention, where sustainable practices included eliminating single-use plastics and supporting reforestation efforts.

Understanding the importance of protecting its reputation and customers, QNET launched the Say NO! Awareness Campaign in collaboration with Transblue Limited Nigeria and local authorities. This initiative combats fraudulent schemes that exploit vulnerable individuals by misusing reputable brand names. The campaign operates across multiple countries, including Burkina Faso, Nigeria, and Senegal, focusing on three core strategies: raising awareness of scams, fostering collaboration with partners, and educating communities about deceptive practices.

    Success Stories and Real-World Impact

The legitimacy of QNET is best illustrated through the success stories. Take Anup Debnath, a 51-year-old QNET customer who recently set a Guinness World Record as the oldest person to perform continuous back handsprings, completing an impressive 20 repetitions. Debnath attributes his extraordinary achievement to a commitment to fitness supported by QNET’s wellness products.

“To accomplish something like this at my age takes intense dedication, a consistent fitness regimen, and harmony of mind, body, and spirit,” Debnath explained. He credits the Amezcua Chi Pendant 4 for maintaining his energy and focus.

“Anup’s achievement is extraordinary, and we are incredibly proud to have played a part in his journey,” stated Kuna.

While skeptics might dismiss wellness-enhancing products as questionable, QNET’s Chi Pendant 4 exemplifies the company’s commitment to evidence-based wellness technology. The pendant combines modern engineering with traditional principles in its unisex design. The octagon-shaped copper alloy incorporates the flower of life pattern and proprietary Amezcua Resonance Technology. The product aims to support overall wellness through what QNET describes as a harmonizing effect on the body’s biofield, particularly beneficial for those maintaining busy modern lifestyles. The pendant, designed to harmonize physical, emotional, and mental energies, works with other Amezcua products like the Bio Disc 3 and Bio Light 3 to support his training and recovery.

“His belief in QNET’s Amezcua products reflects our mission — helping people achieve balance and wellness in every aspect of their lives,” stated Kuna. “Anup’s story is a testament to discipline, resilience, and holistic well-being. Nigeria: Embracing Gambling Even More

When it comes to gambling, a lot of African countries look sternly on the activity. Fortunately for Nigerians who love gambling, their country’s government takes a less strict approach. Nigerian law distinguishes between games of skill, which are legal, and games of chance, which are illegal. Land-based casino gaming, sports betting, and lottery are all legal, whereas roulette, dice games, and unskilled card games fall outside of the law.

However, as the Nigerian government further relaxes its attitude towards gambling, there have been changes in regulation that could benefit players and the authorities. Below is a look at the recent amendments to gambling regulations in Nigeria, their similarity to laws in the US and Canada, how these changes might affect the market, and whether they will affect the Nigerian government’s attitude towards gambling.

Embracing gambling with new changes in regulations

The ruling of the country’s Supreme Court is one that could really set the cat among the pigeons since it could change how other areas are regulated. In November, the court ruled the country’s National Lottery Act void and that, instead of the federal government, state legislative assemblies should regulate lotteries and games of chance.

It’s a ruling some state regulators have been pushing for since 2008. Back then, the Lagos state government had asked the Supreme Court to void current legislation because the national assembly lacked the power to control or regulate lotteries. According to the state, “lotteries” are a “residual” matter.

Learning from the USA and Canada

Some might ask whether the Supreme Court has taken its ideas from events in Canada and the USA. Both countries have granted the right to regulate certain forms of gambling to states or, in Canada’s case, provinces. In the US, some states have the say on most forms of gambling, including casinos and sports betting, and in Canada, provincial governments also have a say on what goes when it comes to certain forms of gambling.

The activity has existed illegally in some shape or form for a long time in both countries, but both countries are waking up to the benefits of regulating gambling activities. Now, citizens in states have a safer place to game, rather than risk being ripped off by shady operators. Meanwhile, through the tax revenues gambling generates, the states themselves can increase the income flowing into their coffers.

Success in the USA and Canada

Legislators in Canada and the USA would likely say regulation has been successful, and why not? The stats show that’s the case. According to consumer and market data company Statista, revenue in the online casino market is set to reach $2.61 billion in 2024 in Canada, and in the US, the lottery is immensely popular. In a survey in August 2023, 37% of the respondents said they’d played the lottery, which was the top form of gambling in the US, in the last 12 months.

The shift from federal government to state government regulation of gambling has allowed players to pursue gambling with much less fear of legal repercussions. Now they can search for casinos more comfortably online and how they rank for different aspects, such as accessibility.

Nigeria could possibly follow the lead of countries where the legal gambling industry is thriving with reputable providers. Players must have a range of trustworthy payment methods, so they feel comfortable as soon as they login. For instance, Casino.org ranks the best eCheck casinos in Canada. More than 30 billion eChecks were processed in 2022 so catering for this audience is vital. Review sites that rate features like payment methods are invaluable and it’s clear there are a lack of reliable casino review sites across Nigeria, if the country wants a fully fledged gambling industry, this area must improve.

The scope and impact of the new gaming laws

The new laws close the loopholes and legal uncertainty around gambling that unscrupulous operators have been making the most of. Now, licensing will be tighter, meaning players have more protection. Casinos will have to undergo thorough vetting processes to obtain their licenses. This will increase the cost of compliance for them, unfortunately, but they’ll also benefit from a more level playing field.

The changes in regulation enable players to game in a safer environment. That’s because the new regulations place more of a focus on responsible gaming. Players have more support so they can play safely.

As well as all this, the regulations create more transparency in the market. Operators must be more open about their practices. This builds trust between the operators and any partners, and between the operators and players. The transparency will make things better for players.

A move towards an even more relaxed attitude

Nigeria’s transfer of gambling regulation to the state government level shows a commitment to protecting its people and that Nigeria is embracing gambling more. There’s an appetite for gambling in the country and authorities want to make sure gambling is as safe as possible to participate in gambling activities.

Opening itself up to gambling could also help the country address some of its economic challenges and pave the way for overseas operators to enter the market. This is a thrilling opportunity for Nigeria and for overseas operators and could help Nigeria improve its own gambling market and foster growth.

The shift towards gambling regulation at the state level instead of the federal government level is a step forward for Nigeria. It will enable the country’s gambling market to thrive. The safer they keep players, the more popular gambling could become.
