    Navigating the geospatial frontier: Surv. Micheal Okegbola reflects on journey, research, and innovations in surveying

    Surveying and geo-informatics expert, Surv. Micheal Oketunde Okegbola has reflected on his journey, research, and innovations in the field of surveying.

    In an interview with The Nation, Surv. Okegbola, discussed how his academic path in surveying and geo-informatics has been shaped by a combination of rigorous theoretical training and hands-on experience.

    He highlighted how his Bachelor’s and postgraduate studies at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, significantly enhanced his expertise, particularly in geoinformatics and remote sensing.

    This advanced knowledge, he noted, has enabled him to delve into complex spatial data analysis and land use dynamics.

    Surv. Okegbola noted: “My educational journey in surveying and geoinformatics has been a dynamic blend of rigorous academic training and practical experience. I began with a National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) in Surveying and Geoinformatics from the Federal School of Surveying, Oyo, Nigeria, where I gained a solid foundation in the principles of surveying.

    “My Bachelor’s and postgraduate studies at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, further deepened my expertise, especially in Geoinformatics and Remote Sensing, allowing me to explore complex spatial data analysis and land use dynamics. Currently, I am pursuing a PhD in Sustainable and Resilient Infrastructure Engineering at Morgan State University, Baltimore, Maryland.

    “This diverse educational background has enabled me to contribute significantly to geospatial sciences, integrating traditional surveying techniques with modern technologies like UAVs, remote sensing, and GIS for sustainable infrastructure development.”

    Speaking on his primary research interests and their impact on the field of surveying and geoinformatics, Surv. Micheal Okegbola highlighted his focus on land and water mapping, shoreline analysis, and the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for topographic modelling and environmental monitoring.

    He stated: “My primary research interests include geodetic and surveying engineering, satellite image fusion, remote sensing, and GIS applications in infrastructure engineering. I am particularly focused on land and water mapping, shoreline mapping, and the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for topographic modelling and environmental monitoring.

    “These interests are crucial in today’s geospatial landscape as they address critical challenges such as environmental degradation, infrastructure development, and sustainable land use. By applying advanced technologies like UAVs and satellite imagery, I aim to provide precise geospatial data that inform better decision-making and policy development for sustainable urban and environmental planning.”

    Highlighting the impact of his research on sustainable transportation infrastructure, particularly in the area of big data analytics for predictive maintenance, Surv. Okegbola emphasized: “My research on big data analytics for predictive maintenance of sustainable transportation infrastructure aims to revolutionize how we manage and maintain transportation systems. By leveraging big data, machine learning, and advanced geospatial analysis, my work seeks to predict infrastructure failures before they occur, reducing downtime and maintenance costs.

    “This proactive approach not only extends the lifespan of infrastructure assets but also enhances safety and reliability, contributing significantly to sustainable urban mobility. The integration of big data analytics in transportation infrastructure is poised to support smarter cities and more resilient transportation networks, ultimately benefiting the public and the environment.”

    Discussing the integration of UAV technology into his work, Surv. Okegbola noted that UAVs are crucial for obtaining high-resolution geospatial data, which is essential for mapping, monitoring, and analysis in surveying and geoinformatics.

    He stated: “UAV technology plays a pivotal role in my work, particularly in acquiring high-resolution geospatial data for mapping, monitoring, and analysis. UAVs offer numerous benefits, including the ability to collect data quickly and accurately over large or inaccessible areas, which is invaluable in topographic modelling, shoreline mapping, and environmental monitoring.

    “The flexibility and precision of UAVs enhance the efficiency of surveying tasks, reduce operational costs, and minimize risks associated with traditional ground-based methods. By incorporating UAV technology, I can deliver more detailed and timely geospatial insights, supporting better planning and management of land and water resources.”

    Reflecting on his solid background in teaching and mentorship, Surv. Okegbola emphasized how his experience as a lecturer significantly contributed to his research and professional development, he noted: “Teaching has been an integral part of my career, enriching both my research and professional growth. As a lecturer at the Federal School of Surveying, Oyo, and other institutions, I have had the opportunity to engage with students and professionals, sharing knowledge and exploring new ideas in surveying and geoinformatics.

    “This interaction fosters a collaborative learning environment that fuels my research with fresh perspectives and innovative approaches. Additionally, mentoring students and young professionals keeps me at the forefront of emerging technologies and methodologies, ensuring that my work remains relevant and impactful in a rapidly evolving field.”

    Discussing his most notable achievements and publications that have influenced his career, Surv. Okegbola highlighted his significant accomplishment in applying UAV technology to shoreline mapping, which was published in Iconic Research and Engineering Journals.

    He said: “One of my most significant achievements is the application of UAV technology in shoreline mapping, published in Iconic Research and Engineering Journals. This work demonstrated the potential of UAVs to provide detailed and accurate shoreline data, which is critical for coastal management and environmental protection.

    “Another notable publication assessed the geometric accuracy of UAV data, contributing valuable insights into the reliability of UAVs for geospatial applications. These publications, along with others in areas like urban sprawl dynamics and cadastral information systems, have not only advanced my career but also contributed to the broader field by addressing real-world challenges with innovative geospatial solutions.”

    On what motivates him to continue his research, and his future goals in this field, he said: “My motivation comes from a passion for leveraging geospatial technology to solve pressing environmental and infrastructure challenges. The ability to use advanced tools like remote sensing, GIS, and UAVs to make a tangible impact on society drives me to push the boundaries of my research.

    “In the future, I aim to continue exploring the intersection of big data analytics and geospatial technology to develop smarter, more resilient infrastructure solutions. I am also committed to mentoring the next generation of geospatial professionals, ensuring they are equipped with the skills and knowledge to address future challenges in surveying and geoinformatics.”

    Addressing the future of geospatial sciences in relation to sustainable development, he emphasized that technologies like UAVs, satellite imagery, and big data analytics will become increasingly essential for monitoring environmental changes, optimizing infrastructure, and facilitating sustainable land use planning.

    He added: “The future of geospatial sciences is incredibly promising, particularly in the context of sustainable development. As global challenges like climate change, urbanization, and resource management intensify, the demand for precise, real-time geospatial data will continue to grow.

    “Technologies such as UAVs, satellite imagery, and big data analytics will play increasingly vital roles in monitoring environmental changes, optimizing infrastructure, and supporting sustainable land use planning. The integration of these technologies into everyday decision-making processes will be crucial in building smarter, more sustainable communities worldwide. I am excited to be at the forefront of this evolution, contributing research that helps shape a more resilient and sustainable future.”

    Zoho announces 31% growth in Nigeria, prioritizes community initiatives

    Zoho, a global technology company, on Thursday, September 19, said that it grew by 31% in 2023 in Nigeria, one of its key markets in the Africa region.

    The company which has been providing its 55+ apps in Naira to help local businesses amid the fluctuating dollar rate also announced its collaboration with Bridge International Academies to support the education of underprivileged children.

    These announcements were made on the sidelines of Zoholics Nigeria, the company’s annual user conference.

    Kehinde Ogundare, Country Head, Zoho Nigeria said: “As we continue to grow our presence in Africa, our focus is on ensuring that our expansion positively impacts the local economy, communities, and the broader business ecosystem.

    “This approach aligns with our transnational localism strategy, which emphasises being rooted in local markets while staying globally connected. To support this, we are committed to hiring local talent, strengthening our partner network, and creating products tailored to the local market.

    “Additionally, to serve the community, we are supporting the education of children and also undertaking sustainability initiatives.”

    Speaking on community and environment initiatives, he Ogundare said Zoho is partnering with Bridge International Academies to establish a meaningful Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative in Nigeria, Kenya, and Uganda.

    He said the primary objective of the partnership is to support the education of 200 children from underserved communities by sponsoring school uniforms, fees for four terms, and other essential items for students attending Bridge International Academies.

    He said the initiative aims to address the issue of financial constraints that hinder many pupils’ access to essential school supplies.

    According to him, Zoho recognises the crucial role of education in societal development and is committed to breaking down these barriers by supporting Bridge International Academies pupils with necessary supplies.

    In said he addition to all these, Zoho aims to assist Bridge International Academies in its digitalisation efforts, offering Zoho Wallet Credits to help them utilise the company’s technology.

    “Every child has the right to education, yet many children from underprivileged backgrounds face significant barriers to accessing quality learning opportunities.

    “That’s why we are committed to transforming the lives of millions of children in underserved communities by delivering life-changing education. Through strategic partnerships, we aim to bridge this gap by providing vital resources and high-quality education to the students we serve.”

    On other upskilling initiatives in Africa, Ogundare said: “Earlier this year, Zoho revealed several upskilling partnerships across Africa. As part of the Young Creators Program, Zohopartnered with She Code Africa, a non-profit organisation dedicated to empowering and upskilling African women in tech. Zoho conducted “train the trainer” sessions for SCA Academy trainers, equipping them with skills to use ZohoCreator, Zoho’s low-code app development platform. The SCA Academy trainers will then train more students associated with SCA to develop impactful applications using low-code technology, addressing real-world business challenges.

This partnership will focus on teaching students how to leverage Zoho’s cloud-based business applications, enhancing their technology skills, and preparing them for diverse career opportunities in various industries.

    “Recently, in South Africa, Zohocollaborated with BabesGotBytes to empower over 40 girls and women with digital skills through a comprehensive one-year boot camp, aimed at bridging the skills gap and increasing female representation in tech. Additionally, Zoho partnered with CodeTelligence to support a 6-month boot camp for 36 economically disadvantaged youth, providing IT training and mentorship to enhance their employability and readiness for the workforce,” he said.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, travel-related services support over 15 million jobs and contribute more than $2.3 trillion annually to U.S. economic activity when direct and indirect effects are combined. Beneath this contribution lies a procurement-intensive operational framework that determines whether mobility systems function efficiently or introduce systemic risk.

    This framework was the focus of a recent professional presentation examining how travel operations function as procurement-driven systems rather than hospitality-based services. The analysis emphasized that modern travel management relies on the same sourcing, contracting, vendor oversight, and compliance mechanisms found in manufacturing, energy, healthcare, and defense supply chains. Flights, accommodations, ground logistics, and cross-border services are sustained through coordinated procurement decisions that directly affect cost stability, service reliability, and regulatory compliance.

    The presentation drew on operational data from international travel management environments, including procurement activities involving supplier vetting, contract negotiation, pricing controls, inventory planning, and performance monitoring. Findings presented indicated that structured procurement processes in travel operations reduced service disruptions and improved cost predictability, particularly in multi-country operating contexts where regulatory and currency risks are elevated. These outcomes align with broader U.S. supply-chain reform priorities aimed at improving forecasting accuracy and minimizing exposure to vendor failure. Case analysis from procurement-led travel operations showed that when sourcing decisions are aligned with real-time operational execution, organizations experience fewer downstream disruptions. In contrast, fragmented procurement models, where purchasing is disconnected from execution, were associated with higher rates of contract nonperformance and budget overruns. These findings reflect a broader pattern observed across U.S. industries during recent supply-chain shocks, where misalignment between procurement strategy and operational reality amplified disruption during the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent geopolitical instability.

    The economic relevance of these findings extends beyond the travel sector. In the United States, industries such as aviation services, corporate travel management, hospitality infrastructure, government travel procurement, and international project logistics depend on coordinated mobility systems. A single supplier failure in these domains can delay infrastructure projects, disrupt public services, and increase operating costs across multiple sectors. Research from the Federal Reserve has shown that supplier disruptions can raise project costs by 7–15 percent and delay delivery timelines by several months, underscoring the systemic importance of procurement discipline. The presentation also examined procurement risk management as a determinant of economic resilience. Vendor concentration, weak compliance enforcement, and short-term cost optimization were identified as recurring risk factors. In contrast, procurement models emphasizing supplier diversification, compliance verification, and long-term performance evaluation demonstrated stronger continuity during periods of inflation and market volatility. These findings are consistent with U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) reports that recommend resilience-focused procurement frameworks over lowest-cost bidding models.

    From a national competitiveness perspective, the research highlighted that procurement-led operational planning supports broader economic objectives by stabilizing service delivery and protecting institutional trust. Travel systems play a critical role in enabling business investment, workforce mobility, tourism revenue, and diplomatic engagement. When procurement failures disrupt these systems, the economic impact extends far beyond individual firms, affecting trade flows, employment, and regional development. The analysis further positioned procurement-driven travel management as a strategic function rather than a transactional activity. Data presented showed that organizations applying continuous supplier monitoring and compliance auditing experienced improved cost control and reduced exposure to regulatory penalties.

    This approach aligns with evolving U.S. procurement standards that prioritize transparency, accountability, and long-term value creation, particularly in globally integrated supply chains. As globalization continues to reshape how people and services move across borders, the research underscores the importance of professionals who operate at the intersection of procurement governance and operational execution. The findings suggest that procurement-led travel systems contribute directly to economic reliability by reducing uncertainty, improving predictability, and reinforcing supply-chain integrity.

    In conclusion, the research presented reframes travel operations as a critical component of national supply-chain infrastructure rather than a peripheral service sector. By applying procurement discipline to mobility systems, organizations can reduce waste, mitigate risk, and sustain continuity during periods of economic stress. For the United States, where supply-chain resilience has become a strategic priority, procurement-driven travel leadership represents an underexamined but essential lever for maintaining economic stability and competitiveness.

    The rise of containers in software development has revolutionized the way we deploy and manage applications. It has also become popular for being lightweight and portable, and an alternative to the heavier Virtual Machines (VM) for computer virtualization. On its part, VMs provide excellent security but it deployment can be burdensome. Because, in deploying multiple VMs, a developer will have to create unique operating system (OS), libraries, dedicated resources, and application for each.

    The rigorous process causes a software to set up longer than it should, while affecting its storage size too. The aforementioned necessitated the emergence of DevOps software development practice and microservices, with container-based virtualization serving as a faster solution. Multiple containers, unlike, VMs, may a single OS kernel. It is unsurpring, therefore, that containers are, now, the standards for the deploying of microservices and applications to the cloud. It is dependable, which explains why many organisations have adopted it. Now, here is the downsides: containers do not have as much secure protection as VMs and takes a toll on vulnerability management. Improper deployment, untrusted container images, increased attack surface are part of these challenges. As a result of this, protecting access control, network segmentation, and encryption have become more critical than ever.

    Based on these challenges, implementing automated and robust security techniques into continuous integration and continuous development pipelines are crucial. Other similarly important measures to having a secure container include  image scanning, orchestration security, and runtime monitoring. While containers are a top choice, it is necessary to acknowledge its fallibility. This, I believe, will ensure that we take

    proactive measures to minimizing the vulnerabilities of container security in cloud environment. As I believe strongly that will help us to harness the benefits of containers and ensure the integrity and security of applications.

    Ezeribe Foundation partners GetBundi to train 20 Obowo youths in digital skills

    In recognition of the importance of digital skills in today’s job market, the Ezeribe Foundation has partnered with GetBundi Education Technology to equip 20 youths in Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State with digital skills. 

    The beneficiaries were onboarded on the GetBundi platform on September 16 at Golden Tulip Hotel in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

    The partnership will see the 20 selected youths receive training on Web Development, Data Analytics, and Digital Marketing on the GetBundi Education Technology platform over a period of four months. This will consist of one month of advanced digital literacy and three months of online live classes with a masterclass every month from industry experts.

    At the event in Owerri, the Founder of the Ezeribe Foundation, Prince Chima Anyanwu, represented by the secretary of the Foundation, Mrs Chinyere Ngozi, stated the importance of digital skills in enhancing employability, fostering innovation, and promoting economic development.

    Prince Anyanwu said the fully-funded programme is one of the many ways the Ezeribe Foundation is supporting education across Obowo, even as he pledged his commitment to improving the living standards of Obowo youths by helping them to acquire digital skills that are very crucial in today’s world.

    Beyond funding the programme, the Ezeribe Foundation also provided functional laptops for each of the trainees with internet modems to ensure seamless learning.

    The Founder/CEO of GetBundi, Osita Oparaugo, thanked the Ezeribe Foundation for its support to the youths.

    “We believe that Nigerian youths possess the ability and creativity to lead the African digital transformation if given the best chances to learn, which is why we developed GetBundi platform and crafted the courses to help them learn and commercialize innovation. We are sure this is a life-changing opportunity for the beneficiaries. We want more Nigerians to emulate the founders of Ezeribe Foundation and support the youths in their local communities and states. Youth empowerment should not be left for the government alone,” Oparaugo said.  

    “I had an elaborate discussion with Prince Chima Anyanwu after the Sunday event and I can confirm that the next cohort of youth empowerment by the Ezeribe Foundation will be a statewide programme and he is looking at 305 Imo youths,” he said.

    He described GetBundi as a hybrid digital skills education institution for African youths and an online STEM education platform for post primary schools delivering high-quality, engaging, and accessible education content from proficient educationalists and industry experts across the world.

    “GetBundi College of Technology is approved by the Federal Ministry of Education in Nigeria and the National Board for Technical Education as a tertiary institution,” Oparaugo said.

    “We handhold our students and facilitate their learning process all along their curriculum with monthly performance-based tests that allow students to take their theoretical understanding which is knowledge and turn it into the practical application which is skill. Our curriculum is designed to make our students job ready,” he said.

    Former Speaker, Imo State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Barrister Kennedy Ibeh, who was present, gave an undisclosed amount of money to the beneficiaries and promised to support them during the throughout the programme.

    The former Speaker thanked Prince Anyanwu for the human capital development project for Obowo youths, saying that Prince Anyanwu has demonstrated over and over that he is a lover of Obowo and Imo indigenes through various philanthropic gestures.

    The Coordinator of the Ezeribe Foundation, Dr. Ohaeri Ngozi Alphonsus, encouraged the beneficiaries to make absolute use of the opportunity to make themselves independent. He reiterated the Ezeribe Foundation’s commitment to the development of talents across Obowo LGA, adding that the December digital skill empowerment programme would be expanded to accommodate even lecturers looking to upskill themselves.

    Emotional Intelligence (EI) refers to the ability to recognise, understand, and manage our own emotions, as well as the emotions of others.

    Coined and popularised by psychologist Daniel Goleman in the 1990s, this concept has evolved into a crucial component of effective leadership and management.

    Emotional intelligence consists of four core components: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management.

    In the workplace, EI is indispensable for several reasons.

    First and foremost, it fosters a more harmonious work environment, where interpersonal relationships are nurtured, and conflicts are resolved amicably.

    Employees with high emotional intelligence are better equipped to navigate the complex social dynamics of a workplace, facilitating communication, teamwork, and collaboration.

    Furthermore, organisations led by emotionally intelligent managers experience higher employee satisfaction and retention rates, ultimately leading to increased productivity and profitability.

    A friend in the UK, let’s call her Emma, narrated an experience she had in her work place a few yeara agonto me.

    Her office had a looming deadline for a quarterly project and because she has been on the project, she was visibly stressed.

    I know Emma to be very talented but sensitive. She said she was visibly stressed as she had been working late nights, and her usually impeccable work was starting to show signs of strain.

    During a crucial team meeting, the manager, Rachel, announced a sudden change in the project’s scope, which would require significant revisions.

    Emma felt blindsided and overwhelmed. She tried to voice her concerns, but Rachel dismissed them, focusing on meeting the deadline. Emma became increasingly agitated, her voice shaking as she expressed her doubts. Rachel, perceiving Emma’s emotions as unprofessional, sternly told her to “toughen up” and get the work done.

    The meeting ended with Emma feeling belittled and demotivated. She spent the rest of the day struggling to focus, her productivity plummeting. The team’s morale also suffered, as Emma’s distress was palpable.

    As a manager, Rachel failed to recognize and acknowledge Emma’s emotional state, dismissing her concerns and invalidating her feelings.

    She didn’t consider the impact of the sudden change on the team’s workload and well-being.

    By telling Emma to “toughen up,” Rachel implied that Emma’s emotions were a weakness, rather than a natural response to a challenging situation.

    Rachel could have started the meeting by acknowledging the team’s hard work and expressing empathy for the challenges they were facing.

    She could have involved Emma and other team members in the decision-making process, allowing them to share their concerns and suggestions.

    By recognising Emma’s emotional vulnerability, Rachel could have offered support and resources to help her manage her stress, such as providing additional guidance or temporarily reassigning tasks.

    Rachel could have encouraged open discussion and created a safe space for team members to express their emotions and concerns without fear of judgment.

    By taking a more emotionally intelligent approach, Rachel could have fostered a more positive and productive team dynamic, ultimately leading to better decision-making and outcomes.

    The Airtel Africa Foundation has launched the ‘Airtel Africa Fellowship Program’ for the undergraduate students at IIT Madras Zanzibar, the first-ever foreign campus established by an IIT

    The Fellowship aims to support deserving students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) in Zanzibar. 

    Starting with an outlay of US$500,000, this program will benefit 10 undergraduate students, for their entire course duration of 4 years.

    Founded in 2024 with a vision to foster a prosperous Africa, the Airtel Africa Foundation is dedicated to advancing digital and financial inclusion across the continent along with key focus on education and environmental protection. This Fellowship is the maiden initiative undertaken to enhance educational opportunities for meritorious students, especially from disadvantaged backgrounds, enrolled at IIT M Zanzibar

    It is designed to support students from 14 African countries, which are namely Nigeria, Kenya, Malawi, Uganda, Zambia, Tanzania, Rwanda, DRC, Niger, Chad, Congo B, Gabon, Madagascar and Seychelles.

    This initiative follows a series of strategic programs by the Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, aimed at harnessing the potential of AI to drive development, innovation, and well-being in Nigeria.

    Earlier this year, the Ministry held the Artificial Intelligence Strategy Workshop in April, bringing together key stakeholders to discuss the future of AI in Nigeria.

    This was followed by the release of the National AI Intelligence Strategy in August, which outlined the country’s roadmap for integrating AI into various sectors to enhance growth and societal well-being. The AI Fund is a significant step in actualizing these plans, providing Nigerian startups with the necessary resources to innovate and scale their AI solutions.

    The AI Fund is open to Nigerian-based startups that are focused on AI-driven technology solutions with the potential for significant impact.
