Tech expert canvasses quality education, awareness among youths

Tech expert and Co-Founder of Cybersecurity Education Initiative (CYSED) Moses Joshua has emphasised the critical importance of quality education and awareness among youths.

He said fostering a well-informed and educated youth population is essential in combating various societal vices and ensuring a brighter future for the nation.

He spoke at an empowerment programme on Saturday tagged “Advocates for Cybercrime Prevention” in Benin, Edo State.

He urged youths to imbibe quality knowledge and skills to scale through lives journey rather than delving into cybercrime and other related activities as a quick fix.

“I firmly believe that the solution to cybercrime among youth lies in adopting a ‘Prevent’ approach, where those ‘at-risk’ and likely to get involved are educated and informed about the dangers of cybercrime.

“It might surprise you to know that some young people can’t even distinguish between what constitutes cybercrime and what does not, while others are unaware of the severe consequences that come with engaging in certain cyber-related crimes, which often carry devastating penalties.

“Quality education and enlightenment are powerful tools in addressing the vulnerabilities that often lead youth to engage in risky behaviors, including cybercrime.

“When youths are well-educated, they are better equipped to recognise the consequences of their actions, the impact on their society and victims, evaluate the risks involved, and choose paths that lead to positive outcomes.”

He called several stakeholders in nation building to organise youth empowerment programmes focusing on skill acquisition, change in mindset and knowledge acquirement as they are key factor for change.

“Youth empowerment programs are essential in addressing the root causes of cybercrime by equipping young people with a change in mindset, knowledge, skills, and the opportunities they need to pursue legitimate and fulfilling careers.

“These structured programs should focus on building resilience, which is crucial in changing behavior and offering viable alternatives to cybercrime.

“For instance, a young woman recruited by cybercriminals for voice-over work can instead earn legitimate income by professionally voicing for video editors—an area where such programs can enhance her ability to excel.

“Mentorship programs are also integral, ensuring that young people are guided by professionals who can show them how to achieve lasting success in their chosen fields. A well-structured empowerment program can instill in youth a sense of purpose and direction, which will, in turn, reduce the appeal of cybercrime as a quick fix.”

The “Advocates for Cybercrime Prevention” organized by the Cybersecurity Education Initiative (CYSED), is a youth empowerment initiative designed to build resilience among at-risk youth in Edo State against the allure of cybercrime.

The project is funded by the UK Government, through their Serious and Organised Crime Prevent Programme, Brighter Futures, Managed by TAG International.

  • Expert x-rays dynamics in global financial economy

Expert x-rays dynamics in global financial economy

Lukman Otunuga, a Senior Financial Market Analyst at FXTM—a leading provider of financial education in forex, stocks, indices, and commodities—has provided an outlook on the global financial economy for the week.

He projected potential headwinds due to a recent four percent increase in Brent crude oil prices, which are currently hovering around $80 per barrel.

Otunuga noted that the price of Brent crude, which has been rising since the start of 2024, has become a focal point in the global economic landscape, with prices fluctuating between $82 and $82.80. These figures, he explained, are part of the International Energy Agency’s monthly outlook.

FXTM, which focuses on equipping individuals with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate financial markets, has observed a degree of stability returning to global markets.

This comes after fears of a U.S. recession sent shockwaves through the economy last week.

Otunuga said: “Still, concerns over the health of the world’s largest economy linger with investors on high alert ahead of another busy week. With the US elections just months away, this negative development adds another layer of uncertainty. Much focus will be on the US CPI print, retail sales, and consumer confidence which are likely to shape expectations around how aggressively the Fed cuts rates.

“Regarding the fourth largest economy in Africa, the main theme will be the latest CPI print. One of the key themes in Nigeria in 2024 has been runaway inflation which jumped to 34.2 percent in June – it is the highest level since 1996. However, the incoming CPI print is expected to show prices slowing in July, cooling to 33.2 percent compared to 34.2 percent in the previous month.”

Narrowing it home, Otunuga said given the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN’s) aggressive approach towards raising rates, signs of cooling price pressures will be a breath of fresh air for consumers.

He said: “It is worth noting that the Central Bank of Nigeria has raised rates by a whopping 800 basis points in 2024. Looking beyond inflation, the next key event will be GDP published later this month. After expanding three percent in Quarter One, it will be interesting to see whether growth can be maintained in Quarter Two. In the Foreign EXCHANGE space, the Naira continues to gain against the dollar on the official exchange with the spot rate at N1589 as of Monday.

“Regarding oil, it has extended its first weekly gain since early July thanks to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Rising oil prices may have a positive knock-on effect on the economy, especially when factoring in how a major chunk of revenues is acquired from oil sales.

“However, this could be cancelled out by the rising cost of fuel imports which is costing Nigeria $600 million per month.

“Still, this is set to be another big week for the global commodity due to the monthly outlook from the International Energy Agency. Talking technicals, Brent has gained over four percent since the start of 2024 with prices trading above $80 as of writing. Key levels of interest can be found at $7, $82 and $82.80.”

Meanwhile, the next FXTM’s Financial Markets Trading Seminar will be held on August 17, 2024, in Lagos.

  • Nigerian Scholar, Joseph Mayaki, Presents Groundbreaking Work on Digital Grief Narratives

Nigerian Scholar, Joseph Mayaki, Presents Groundbreaking Work on Digital Grief Narratives

    • By Matthew Alugbin

Joseph A. Mayaki, a University of Ibadan-educated scholar of literature and health humanities, presented at a US national academic conference on Computers and Writing (June 21–24, 2024). This conference was held at Texas Christian University. The Nigerian academic, now affiliated with the University of Utah, made significant waves with his exploration of digital grief narratives. His presentation, “Contextualization Cues and Positioning: An Exploration of the Digital Narratives of Grieving the Loss of Parents,” examined ways people navigate grief in the digital age, shedding light on the therapeutic potential of online platforms. The presentation was a meticulous analysis of how individuals express and manage grief over the loss of their parents on digital platforms.

Mayaki’s work is rooted in key discourse concepts such as contextualization cues and positioning. Contextualization cues refer to the verbal and non-verbal signals that help convey the context of an utterance, while positioning involves how people use narratives to place themselves and others within a social context. These concepts are pivotal in understanding how digital narratives of grief function as a source of therapeutic support. Grief is a universal experience, and in today’s digital age, many individuals turn to online platforms to share their sorrow and seek solace. Mayaki’s research highlights the instinctive need to share personal experiences and how this sharing leads to the formation of supportive online communities. By analysing ten years of historical data from grieving.com, he illustrated how digital narratives provide expressivity, visibility, validation, and relief, forming a therapeutic scriptorium for individuals in mourning.

Mayaki presented several poignant narratives to illustrate his findings. He exemplified how online platforms offer both a private space for reflection and a public platform for support, allowing individuals to gain validation and therapeutic benefits by being seen and heard in their grief. He also highlighted the deadly impact of abusive relationships and how supportive advice from the online community helped navigate grief and find strength. He noted that contextualization cues and positioning help process grief, emphasising how caring family members exonerate themselves from any perceived blame for a loved one’s death.

Joseph Mayaki’s research is a groundbreaking contribution to the fields of digital ethnography and grief studies. By exploring how digital spaces facilitate therapeutic support through storytelling, Mayaki has opened new avenues for understanding the interplay between technology and human emotion. His work underscores the potential of digital platforms to serve as vital tools for mental health support, particularly in times of personal crisis. Mayaki’s presentation at the conference was not just an academic achievement but also a testament to the power of digital communities to provide emotional support. His findings highlight the importance of creating and maintaining supportive online spaces where individuals can share their experiences and receive the empathy and validation they need to heal.

The implications of Mayaki’s research extend beyond academic discourse. His work suggests that digital platforms could be further developed and optimised to enhance their therapeutic potential. For instance, incorporating features that facilitate more personalised support and community engagement could make these platforms even more effective in helping individuals cope with grief. Moreover, Mayaki’s research could inspire the development of new digital tools and applications specifically designed for grief support. These tools could leverage artificial intelligence to provide real-time emotional assistance, connect users with professional counselling services, and foster more robust and responsive online communities.

Joseph Mayaki’s achievements are a source of pride not only for the Nigerian academic community but also for the broader field of digital and health humanities. His insightful exploration of digital grief narratives has the potential to transform how we understand and utilise digital spaces for emotional support. By bringing attention to the therapeutic benefits of online grief narratives, Mayaki has made a significant contribution to both academia and society at large. His presentation at the 2024 Computers and Writing Conference highlighted the profound impact of digital narratives on the grieving process. His research offers valuable insights into the therapeutic potential of online platforms and underscores the importance of supportive digital communities. As we continue to navigate the complexities of grief in the digital age, Mayaki’s work will undoubtedly serve as a crucial reference point for future studies and innovations in this field.
