  • The Divisive Growth of The Sports Betting Industry In Nigeria

The Divisive Growth of The Sports Betting Industry In Nigeria

Sports betting has enjoyed a steady and prolific rise in Nigeria over the last decade, and it still continues to grow unabated in the country. With a large youthful population, incredible level of passion for sports especially, football plus other factors, the sports betting industry has all that is required to keep growing. Many sports betting platforms in Nigeria are offering a get free deposit bonus to attract new users and increase participation in online betting.

The readiness of the Nigerian population to key into sports betting is not a surprise. A football mad country with access to internet, mobile phone technology and a chance to beat the biting economic hardship have made it easy for Nigerians to key into it, providing a large customer base for betting companies.

Recognizing the immense potential inherent in the Nigerian market many years ago, a few betting companies took the plunge and many more followed over the years. Today, there is a long list of Betting sites in Nigeria and more are still projected to join the fray.

However, the tremendous growth the industry is enjoying has come under some scrutiny. The successes of the industry have set tongues wagging about the inherent danger of the entire industry if it continues to grow unchecked.

Recently, the controversial nature of the industry got the attention of the National Assembly where the future, stricter regulations were discussed.

A Federal Lawmaker, Honourable Kelechi Nwogu sponsored a bill which was widely misunderstood as a bill seeking to put an end to sports betting in Nigeria by hardline supporters of the igaming industry in the country. And as expected, given the outcry that followed the introduction of the bill on the floor of the House of Representatives, it was quashed to the relief of those in support of the industry.

However, the quashing of the bill has not ended the discussion around the hugely controversial industry with arguments for and against.

The proponents of Sports betting have anchored their support of the industry on the economic benefits accruable to the country.  The industry is one of the highest employers of labour in the country. The gambling industry is one that relies on technology, advertising and other sectors and it provides plenty employment opportunities.

More so, the industry is one of the major revenue sources for the government at both state and federal levels. The  government get licensing fee and taxes from the betting companies

With the increased need for funds to put infrastructure in place, attain a stable economy and increase government spending capacity, revenue from the sport betting industry has come in handy.

Besides job and economic reasons, other reasons have been put forward to support the continued operation of sports betting companies in Nigeria.

The Entertainment associated with placing bets on sports is exciting. The thrill of calling games and backing one’s self to win an actual bet increases the entertainment value of sports betting.

Betting enthusiasts themselves see sports betting as a potential route out of economic quagmire and there have been many stories of bettors who have made a fortune from placing bets.

The proponents have also argued that sports betting is not a game of chance compared to other forms of gambling. With adequate research and the knowledge of sports players stand a better chance of winning their bets.

Despite the lofty advantages of sports betting, a section of the country are vehemently against the sports betting industry, with various reasons cited.

The biggest negative impact of betting is addiction to sports betting. Like any other form of gambling, people who engage in sports betting have a high risk of addiction.

People tend to bet more than necessary or more than they can afford and this leads to the path of addiction. Accessibility to sports betting via mobile phone connected to the internet can also contribute to the problem of addiction. The side effects of betting addiction which include depression, anxiety and others are well documented.

Another downside of sports betting is the financial impact on people. With sports betting there is always the danger of players going beyond their means to place a bet in the hope that their next bet will win. Problem gambling could be a precursor to debt and financial recklessness. There have also been arguments that it can lead to family problems.

There is also the aspect of the well being of the society at large. With a majority of the country’s population classified as youth, there are fears in several quarters that it may snowball into a scourge that impacts the society negatively.

Currently, the country is grappling with underage gambling as a result of the pervasive nature of sports betting. Betting companies have mobile apps accessible by an internet enabled device and some are investing heavily in retail betting which makes it even easier for minors to place bets in betting shops.

To achieve a virile and yet regulated market, the National Lottery Regulatory Commission must intensify efforts to see that all the parties involved play by the dictates of the law governing sports betting in Nigeria.

Irrespective of the divide one is in, there is a need to come together and fashion the best blueprint going on sports betting in Nigeria going forward.

There has to be an encompassing approach to evaluate the merit and the demerits of sports betting. Issues like underage gambling, problem gambling, companies flouting regulations are all addressed.

If these issues are adequately addressed, Nigeria will have a healthy betting industry where the benefits outweigh the disadvantages.

  • CSO lauds Tinubu, Ministers, NCC’s strides in one year

CSO lauds Tinubu, Ministers, NCC’s strides in one year

The Good Governance Advocates (GGA) has commended President Bola Tinubu for working tirelessly to drive the nation’s digital economy, fostering innovation, and bridging the digital divide.

The group also applauded the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani and Dr Aminu Maida for keying into the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda by developing a vibrant digital ecosystem, empowering entrepreneurs, and creating jobs for our teeming youth.

The group also acknowledged the achievements of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) under the visionary leadership of Maida in regulating and developing the Nigerian telecommunications industry.

The GGA made this known on Thursday at a briefing to assess President Bola Tinubu’s first anniversary.

Convener Comrade Mahmoud Abubakar, said the Ministry has witnessed unprecedented growth and transformation, showing an unwavering commitment to harnessing the power of technology to drive economic growth and development.

According to Abubakar, Maida has shown unwavering dedication to creating an enabling environment for innovation, competition, and growth which has contributed to the country’s economic growth and social progress.

“The Good Governance Advocates agree with the position of the Honourable Minister that digital literacy means something other than that you have become a technical talent. However, it gives you the foundation to choose that you also want to participate in the digital economy,” Abubakar said.

“This is brilliant because digital literacy skills help individuals understand the importance of securing their online information and the potential cyber-attack risks. It also enables individuals to use tools to secure their digital assets.

“We must also admit that social media is integral to our lives today. Digital literacy skills are essential for using it safely and responsibly as they enable individuals to identify potential risks associated with social media, such as cyberbullying, identity theft, and phishing attacks. It also helps individuals to understand the importance of protecting their personal information on social media platforms.

“Notably, the federal government projects that 90% of Nigerians should be digitally literate by 2030. The steps taken in this direction are commendable and in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

“The Nigerian Communications Commission’s activities also come in handy in re-positioning the telecoms sector for optimal productivity. The Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr Aminu Maida, has also displayed a grasp of the issues in the industry and his policy initiative and drive have been commendable.

“The Good Governance Advocates recognizes the efforts of the NCC in promoting indigenous content in the telecommunications sector.  This is in line with the provisions of the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003, which empowers the NCC to encourage local and foreign investments in the Nigerian communications industry, introduce innovative services and practices as well as promote the participation of Nigerians in the ownership, control and management of communications companies and development of communications manufacturing and supply sectors.

“Also worthy of mention are the efforts to position Nigeria as a significant player in the global technology landscape by establishing the Nigerian Digital Technology Exchange Programme Hub (Nigeria Startup House) in San Francisco, United States of America.

“Notably, the Nigerian Startup House will play a critical role in promoting Nigeria’s economic interest, attracting Foreign Direct Investment and improving the visibility and positioning of Nigeria’s Startup Ecosystem to attract funding and expertise from global markets and organizations.

“The San Francisco Bay Area is recognized globally as a significant source of startup ecosystem funding, with a combined GDP value of over $929 billion. It is home to over 200 of the largest companies in the world by revenue.

“The Good Governance Advocates also recognizes the gigantic step taken with establishing a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to facilitate the delivery of 90,000km of fibre-optic cable, complementing Nigeria’s existing connectivity infrastructure to deliver a more robust national backbone for universal access to the internet.

“The efforts to build Nigeria’s technical talent backbone are instructive. The 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme aims to power our digital economy and position Nigeria as a net talent exporter. It will generate a pipeline of technical talent in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of creating 2 million digital jobs by 2025.

“May we state that this is indeed the game changer in our quest for developing talents as the strategic focus of the 3MTT is on Software Development, UI/UX Design, Data Analysis & Visualization, Quality Assurance, Product Management, Data Science, Animation, AI / Machine Learning, Cybersecurity, Game Development, and Cloud Computing. “

  • Nigerian youths empowered with free tech boot camps to combat cybercrime

Nigerian youths empowered with free tech boot camps to combat cybercrime

Over 120 tech enthusiasts have been enrolled in a free 4-week Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) programme organised by tech enthusiast, Olumayowa Akinkuehinmi.

This initiative aims to remove financial barriers to high-quality tech training, empowering individuals to advance their careers and fostering the growth of skilled professionals in the rapidly evolving fields of networking and cybersecurity.

The virtual session launched on Sunday, saw a massive turnout of Nigerian youths eager to learn and combat cybercrimes and related vices both in Nigeria and globally.

Olumayowa, one of the guest speakers at the recently concluded 2024 Africa CyberFest Conference in Lagos, discussed Nigeria’s representation on the global stage and the impact of cybercrime on the country’s image.

He said: “At Africa CyberFest, my session highlighted the dynamic representation of The African youth on the global stage. Besides Nigeria, I have had the privilege of visiting several West African countries. In each new place, I make it a point to engage with local communities, particularly fresh graduates. These interactions often lead to enriching conversations where I explore their perspectives and aspirations.

“A recurring theme in these discussions is the significant challenges they face, primarily due to a lack of support and resources. This realisation has driven me to prioritise mentoring and supporting emerging talents who have limited access to essential training and opportunities. By providing the necessary resources and guidance, I aim to help them enhance their skills and become better versions of themselves. This commitment not only fosters individual growth but also contributes to the broader development of our tech communities across the region. I started a Tech community in Cameroon called ‘CyberCombi’ and it’s focused on learning CyberSecurity. Most community members are University students and Fresh graduates and the idea is to give them access to mentors and learning while getting them job-ready. There are plans also to plant more communities across Africa.”

However, Olumayowa believes that merely identifying the problem is not enough to solve it.

He emphasises the need for drastic measures to tackle cybercrime issues in Nigeria.

This conviction led him to take the initiative to educate Nigerians, raise awareness, and foster a cyber-secure environment through his free certified programmes.

“As a dedicated Nigerian tech enthusiast, I believe addressing the cybercrime problem in Nigeria requires a multifaceted approach, including education and skill development. My journey began last year with initiatives to support individuals eager to learn new skills, particularly in the tech space.

“The first major effort was a CCNA Gold Bootcamp, which I co-sponsored with my friend Chukwudi Theodore. We funded over 60 participants, each costing around $100, and were fortunate to receive additional support. Building on this success, we initiated a free DevOps Bootcamp, which attracted over 300 interested individuals. Although only a fraction continued the program, it highlighted the demand for such training.

To further support self-paced learning, we distribute free Udemy vouchers from time to time. My commitment to Tech education led me to become an instructor with Cisco Networking Academy, where I could provide even more structured support. I also launched a free Linux learning campaign courtesy of Cisco Network Academy and NDG, which has seen about 9 batches this year alone, with each batch receiving applications from 700 to 900 individuals. Approximately 8,000 applicants have engaged with the Linux program so far, with varying degrees of completion.

Read Also: NGO warns against drug abuse, cybercrimes among students

Following my participation in Africa Cyberfest, I recognized a strong desire for learning and took additional steps to support cybersecurity education. Partnering with two instructors, we started offering free cybersecurity classes. A registration link posted on my Twitter timeline garnered over 700 applicants within an hour, and these classes have since commenced.

Furthermore, Chukwudi Theodore and I launched a “CCNA in 4 Weeks” campaign, which saw 120 applicants sign up within just three minutes.

These initiatives, including the cyber security and CCNA classes, have seen enthusiastic participation from people across the globe, spanning multiple time zones. The primary goal of these free classes is to equip participants with the skills they need to be job-ready and to foster a community of knowledgeable and responsible tech professionals who can contribute positively to the fight against cybercrime.

Through these efforts, I aim to create a robust support system for aspiring tech professionals, providing them with the necessary training and resources to excel and make meaningful contributions to the tech industry and the broader fight against cybercrime in Nigeria.”

Olumayowa urged youths to engage in skill acquisition, and quality learning and desist from cybercrime because the consequences are greater than the pleasure therein.

“My advice to young boys and girls contemplating cybercrime as a path to wealth is simple: learn a skill today. Crime, in any form, does not pay and carries severe consequences. Despite efforts to remain anonymous, there will always be a digital footprint that can lead to legal repercussions and damage your future.

Instead, you’ll need to invest your time in acquiring a valuable skill. Dedicating six months to learning something new can yield significant, legitimate rewards. This doesn’t have to be limited to tech—there are countless skills out there that can provide a fulfilling and prosperous career.

Every get-rich-quick scheme comes with long-term negative consequences. By focusing on skill development and hard work, you can achieve sustainable success and contribute positively to society. Embrace the opportunity to build a solid foundation for your future through honest and diligent efforts.”

In his closing remarks, he urged the Nigerian government to create a quality atmosphere for skill acquisition, and financial Support in terms of loans, grants, and other incentives, because research has shown that idleness and unemployment increase the rate of crime in any state or country.

“To effectively curb cybercrime, the government should implement a multifaceted approach focusing on skill acquisition and economic opportunities like Springing up Skill Acquisition Centres and Technical Schools and by doing this, the government should invest in reviving and expanding skill acquisition centres and technical schools across the country. These institutions should offer a wide range of programs that equip individuals with practical, marketable skills.

“Also, the government can encourage Skill Development with Financial Support by providing individuals with access to start-up loans to support their entrepreneurial endeavours. A dedicated government sector should manage these funds, ensuring they are disbursed and utilized properly for their intended purposes. This oversight will help maintain accountability and effectiveness.

“There also needs to be a need to promote Internships and Knowledge Transfer where individuals who acquire new skills and start businesses are encouraged to offer internship opportunities. This hands-on experience will allow others to learn on the job, facilitating the distribution of knowledge and skills. As these interns gain proficiency, they too should have access to government funding, continuing the cycle of skill development and business creation.

“Giving Tax Incentives for New Businesses by offering tax holidays to new businesses for a specified number of years. This incentive will make entrepreneurship more attractive and help fledgling businesses stabilize and grow.

“Embedding Skill Development into Education by mandating schools incorporate extracurricular activities focused on skill development. Engaging students in practical learning will keep their minds occupied and provide a sense of direction, even before they graduate”, he said.

Olumayowa Akinkuehinmi is a passionate technology enthusiast. Began his career in the field of network engineering, where he gained extensive experience in managing and optimizing network systems. Over time, my interests and Enthusiasm have evolved, and I am now deeply focused on Cloud Computing and DevOps.

He has learnt to explore innovative solutions and drive efficiency in IT operations. Beyond my professional endeavours, he is dedicated to supporting and contributing to various tech communities, where he shares his knowledge and fosters growth among peers and aspiring technologists.

  • Social media regulation in Nigeria a necessity

Social media regulation in Nigeria a necessity

    By Shuaib S. Agaka

Social media is where voices intersect, ideas flourish, and identities are forged in the digital age. Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter (X), Instagram, TikTok, among others, have seamlessly integrated into the daily lives of Nigerians, shaping societal conversations, setting trends, and influencing collective perceptions.

Despite these advantages, it is worrisome that social media has become the easiest and flexible space where malicious contents are disseminated by users from their comfort zones without restrictions. This is due to poor regulation of its activities by the operators, government authorities and stakeholders. If it continues, it poses a potential risk to the national security of a country.

In 2022, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) issued a Code of Practice, a set of guidelines to regulate the activities of digital platforms in Nigeria. Amidst the array of motivations propelling social media engagement, the allure of fame and recognition shines prominently. Individuals across diverse backgrounds are drawn to these platforms as avenues to showcase talents, share ideas, and gain visibility on a scale previously unimaginable. The promise of attaining widespread recognition, building personal brands, and influencing opinions has transformed social media into a potent catalyst for self-expression and societal impact.

The system of success on social media platforms, such as follower counts, engagement rates and virality, serve as indicators of one’s digital influence and reach. These metrics often translate into opportunities such as brand endorsements, collaborations, and career advancements in creative fields like music, fashion, art, and entertainment. The promise of turning digital popularity into tangible rewards fuels the relentless quest for social media fame among aspiring influencers and content creators.

However, beneath the surface of this digital fame lie nuanced challenges and troubling trends that have garnered increasing attention. A notable phenomenon that has gained traction in recent years is the proliferation of sensationalized, controversial, and at times, harmful content created in pursuit of instant popularity.

This trend raises critical questions about the ethical boundaries of content creation, the societal impacts of sensationalism, and the psychological toll on both creators and consumers of such content. The quest for virality success tied to likes, shares, and followers has reshaped content creation strategies, often blurring the lines between authenticity, entertainment, and exploitation.

In a pursuit of fame, some Nigerians on social media create controversial/harmful content. This trend cuts across various content genres – entertainment, lifestyle, news commentary and social activism. The allure of immediate visibility in a crowded digital landscape have led certain individuals and groups to resort to sensationalism or provocative narratives at the expense of ethical considerations or societal impacts.

One prevalent category of controversial content involves stunts, challenges, or pranks designed to capture the audience’s attention through shock or outrage. Instances, where individuals engage in dangerous activities, risky behaviors, or offensive acts for online acclaim, have garnered significant notoriety.

Moreover, the realm of political and social commentary has seen a surge in polarizing content, where individuals or groups deliberately propagate inflammatory rhetoric, misinformation, or hate speech to garner support or incite reactions. The anonymity and relative lack of accountability in online spaces sometimes embolden users to cross ethical boundaries, leading to harmful consequences such as spreading false information, fueling social tensions, or inciting violence.

This shift in content dynamics extends beyond individual aspirations, influencing broader societal perceptions, cultural norms, and digital interactions. The consequences of sensationalized content consumption ripple through online communities, shaping offline behaviors and attitudes. As Nigerians navigate this digital landscape, it becomes imperative to engage in nuanced discussions about responsible digital citizenship, platform accountability, and ethical content creation practices.

An illustrative example involves a popular social media personality, the cloak-and-dagger informant on Instagram, who has gained notoriety for his alleged omniscience, involving activities such as stalking, sniffing, and spilling the secrets of individuals on his Instagram page. These behaviors violate privacy rights, as the informant exposes private details without consent. Despite being hailed as a hero by some, the reality paints a different picture, revealing actions contrary to noble intentions.

Also, a popular social media personality who gained notoriety for staging elaborate and potentially harmful pranks on the streets. In spite of obvious risks of endangering victims’ safety, public safety, and more concerning, promoting irresponsible behavior, the individual’s online following and engagement surged, reflecting a troubling dynamic where controversy often translates to visibility and influence.

Creators think outside the box, leverage humor, and satire to captivate audiences. However, this creative freedom must be tempered by a consciousness of harm, misinformation, stereotypes, incitement or violence that sensationalized content can perpetuate. Ethical considerations in content creation extend beyond legal frameworks to encompass moral principles, societal values, and the duty of care toward audiences.

Creators wield significant influence over their followers, shaping opinions, perceptions, and behaviors through their content. This influence comes with a responsibility to uphold truthfulness, integrity, and respect for diverse perspectives. Regulatory bodies and policymakers need to be more active in considering measures to address issues such as misinformation, hate speech, cyberbullying, and harmful content dissemination.

There is a need to enhance existing laws and frameworks. This includes amendments to cybercrime laws, data protection regulations, and media laws to encompass online platforms and digital content creators. Additionally, there should be discussions about the need for specialized agencies or units dedicated to monitoring and regulating online content. They would work with law enforcement bodies and technology companies to identify and tackle harmful content swiftly.

Ultimately, achieving a responsible digital ecosystem requires collective efforts and a commitment to ethical standards, human rights, and societal values. By navigating these challenges, Nigeria can harness the transformative potential of social media while mitigating its implications, fostering a digital environment that empowers and enlightens citizens. Therefore, the time is ripe for the social media and other contents to be regulated in order to operate in line with standard procedures.
