    Justin Jin Makes Bold Claims About His Hot Media Start-Up. Do They Hold Water?

    At 12, Justin Jin had saved up just enough to purchase the 2017 Macbook Air. Then, as a YouTuber in 2020, his flurry of YouTube poop — a type of comedic video mashup — earned him millions of views. In interviews, he has described going viral on Halloween that year. A few months later, he used the $2,000 CAD (~N2,000,000) earned from his channel to purchase The Celebrity Observer brand, which he churned into a gossip empire and eventually flipped to an African media conglomerate for a profit.

    Mr. Jin’s compelling self-made background has helped him stand out among entrepreneurs when he sought connections and venture capital, and when he formally founded the digital upstart Poybo Media Group. His company’s brands have hit the top of social media’s trending charts, have raised millions from high-profile investors, and, perhaps most importantly, gains hundreds of millions of views every month. Some of their distributed songs have even dipped into Billboard charts. Mr. Jin himself is valued at an estimated $1.1 million USD (~N1,400,000,000), making him one of Canada’s youngest self-made millionaires.

    In interviews and podcasts, Mr. Jin, 17, frequently discusses Poybo’s success. Among other things, he has said the start-up hit 7.5 million followers in 2023. 

    But internal company data viewed by The Nation showed that as of early last year, only about 3 million were gained organically since 2022, from 2 million. That likely means the remaining 2.5 million followers were acquired directly through media acquisitions.

    After Mr. Jin expanded into online media in January 2021, he told writers on Forbes that the company rapidly reached billions of views. But many of those followers actually originate from significantly ‘less valuable’ demographics — places like India — according to internal data. Despite becoming a teen-led business icon of the Western world, less than half of Poybo’s roughly 10 million current followers actually originate from Canada or the United States.

    Poybo is among a class of start-ups that rose during the fast-money era of the early 2020s and in the pandemic, when young companies landed millions of dollars in funding with little more than promises. Now as the money has dried up and many start-ups grapple with a downturn, investors are pickier, customers are wary of bold claims and employees are more suspicious of founder pronouncements.

    Mr. Jin has, on paper, increased Poybo’s staff to nearly 100 people. On the ‘Masthead’ section of his website, though, only 13 are displayed. This is because the bulk of Poybo’s producers stem from India and Nigeria, one of Mr. Jin’s prolific methods to drastically bring down operating costs.

    This account of Mr. Jin was based on interviews with six current and former employees, as well as internal communications and analytics. Internal documents go up to February 2024.

    Mr. Jin grew up in Vancouver and North Vancouver. After moving to West Vancouver for high school at Mulgrave School, he started various ventures, one of which included a chic e-commerce brand called Cuatro Seasons. In essence, Cuatro Seasons was a distributor of low-quality merchandise from China, but at a 200% markup.

    Poybo Media Group had a slow start, four people with knowledge of the company said. An investor presentation viewed by The Nation showed that Poybo had a total revenue of $320,000 USD (~N420,000,000) in 2022, and later $1.4 million USD in 2023. What Mr. Jin’s undertaken with Poybo is not exactly quixotic (major media will issue productions that will be more profitable) and it is not exactly redistributive (the contributing producers are almost uniformly established social media stars). But the large acquisitions is at least a little evocative of an era before youth media turned release schedules to cycles of constant churn. From their subtle shift away from comedy, what Mr. Jin seems to be chasing instead is something permanent, something durable.

    In a statement, Mr. Ikokwu, a media analyst, said: “The best founders are the ones who have grit and are willing to test new hypotheses and adapt. I would say Justin is an embodiment of these qualities.”

    Some employees, however, had concerns that out of the dozens of accounts that Poybo’s network includes, a few did not have real followers. Based on engagement numbers, they estimate around 4-8% of Poybo’s following aren’t real people. 

    There are significant pay disparities between the countries of Mr. Jin’s producers, with Western languages commanding as much as 6 times more than those from the Global South. For example, an old job posting for native English-speaking producers pays $5.55 USD per hour, compared to a posting for an expert in Hindi that offers just $0.86 USD per hour.

    These lower-paid languages are considered “low-resource” — languages that bring in viewers from less advertiser-attracting audiences such as India leaves social media with poorer quality videos. The result is lower rates for workers in regions with a lower living wage, even if they’re providing videos of a less accessible language.

    “It’s a kind of strategy to improve performance in a variety of languages or a strategy to market themselves as having improved it,” Mr. Ikokwu said. “Actually, it’s probably a bit of both.”

    The start-up is in more of a “seed stage,” or very early in its development, Mr. Ikokwu explained.

    Can you tell us a little bit about your background and how your journey began?

    I studied English education, and during that time, I was actively involved in community work around Osun State and its environs.     How did you transition into the tech space after university?

    Once I realised product management was the direction I wanted to go, I enrolled at Utiva’s Product Management School. The program helped me understand how to build and launch digital products from user research to feature definition and execution. After completing the training, I landed my first official Product Manager role at Treegar, where I worked on digital solutions that improved access to financial tools.

    What were your next steps after Treegar?

    After Treegar, I joined Modanalytica, a SaaS company designed to help businesses analyze and optimise their data-driven decisions. Working there gave me a deeper appreciation for how data powers business growth. It also strengthened my ability to translate complex technical insights into business outcomes, which became one of my strongest skills as a product manager.

    And now you’re at PennyTree. What’s that experience been like?

    Yes, I currently work at PennyTree, a digital finance platform that helps everyday users save, spend, and grow their money smarter.     Remote work isn’t just about working from home anymore. For software engineer Ayodeji, it’s been about managing teams spread across different continents, time zones, and cultures.

    “People think remote work is just having good internet and a webcam,” he says. “But the real challenge is building trust and communication when your team is scattered everywhere.”

    His experience comes from years of working with teams where some people are in Nigeria, others in Norway, USA and the rest spread across different time zones.

    Time Zones Are Tricky

    The biggest mistake teams make? “Thinking you can schedule everything around one person’s time zone,” he explains. “When your team spans Lagos to Texas, someone’s always staying up late or waking up early for meetings.”

    His solution is simple: stop trying to get everyone in the same meeting. “We moved away from daily standups where everyone reports what they’re doing. Instead, people write quick updates, and we only meet when we actually need to make decisions together.”

    The few hours when everyone can be online become precious. “If you only have 2-3 hours of overlap, don’t waste it on status updates. Use it for the hard conversations that actually need everyone there.”

    Communication Changes Everything

    Remote teams have to communicate differently. “In an office, you hear conversations, see body language, pick up on context. Remote teams lose all of that,” he explains.

    The fix is being more direct about everything. “We have different spaces for different types of talk – quick questions go in chat, decisions get written down, and complex discussions happen in focused meetings with clear agendas.”

    But more communication isn’t always better. “Some teams think they need more meetings to compensate for being remote. Usually that just makes things worse. Better to have fewer, more focused conversations.”

    Building Trust Takes Work

    Working with people from different cultures taught him that communication styles vary widely. “Direct feedback that works in some places can sound rude in others. You need to figure out how each person likes to communicate.”

    Trust building has to be intentional. “In an office, you build trust through small daily interactions. Remote teams need to create those moments on purpose – virtual chats, starting meetings with personal check-ins, stuff like that.”

    Making Decisions Without Endless Meetings

    One skill he’s had to develop is making group decisions without bringing everyone together. “You can’t have a meeting for every decision, but you also can’t have one person making all the calls.”

    His teams document problems, propose solutions, give everyone time to review, then decide. “It takes longer than a quick meeting, but more people get heard and the decisions are usually better.”

    For urgent stuff, they decide upfront who can make what decisions without asking everyone. “That stops bottlenecks while keeping people accountable.”

    Tools Don’t Fix Everything, Embrace Documentation

    When it comes to remote work tools, he keeps it simple. “The best tool is the one everyone actually uses. We’ve done well with basic setups and struggled with expensive platforms that only half the team adopted.”

    His focus is on reducing friction. “We use shared documents for everything – meeting notes, decisions, project updates. The key is making them easy to find and keeping them current.”

    Getting New People Started

    Bringing someone new onto a remote team needs more planning. “You can’t just point them to a desk and expect them to figure it out. Remote onboarding needs structure.”

    He pairs new people with experienced team members for their first few weeks. “Not just for technical questions, but for understanding how the team actually works.”

    The first project matters a lot. “We try to give new remote team members something meaningful but well-defined. They can contribute quickly and learn the codebase without being overwhelmed.”

    What Actually Works

    After working with remote teams for years, he’s learned that success isn’t about copying office life online. “Remote teams aren’t just distributed offices. They’re a different way of working that needs new skills.”

    His advice is straightforward: “Start with how you communicate, not what tools you use. Figure out how decisions get made, how information gets shared, and how people stay connected. Everything else follows from there.”

    The main insight? “Remote work isn’t about replicating the office experience online. It’s about building new ways of working together that take advantage of what distributed teams can actually do better.”

    The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has unveiled its new website which the Director General, Chief Executive Officer and the permanent representative of Nigeria with the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), Professor Charles Anosike said is “More functional, interactive, dynamic and compares with websites of Met Offices in other parts of the world.”

     The new website which can be accessed through our nimet.gov.ng domain, he said, ” has been meticulously designed by our internal ICT staff from the ground up, with a primary focus of establishing a sustainable and scalable portal for the agency”.

    Continuing, Anosike said that the unveiling of the new NiMet website “is part of ongoing efforts by the new management of the agency to reposition the agency for improved and effective service delivery.

    “This is in addition to other initiatives which are in line with the Aviation sector roadmap of the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development “.

    Cyprian Okpalaku, Special Adviser on Information Communication Technology (ICT) to DG/CEO of NiMet,  said that with the new website; “members of the public can effortlessly request data and monitor the progress of their requests directly through the portal. Also, the weather forecast widget has been revamped to enable partner agencies or organizations to easily integrate it into their own websites”.

    Okpalaku listed other features of the website to include per section view homepage design making it easy for visitors to concentrate on one content section at a time thus enhancing user experience, improved responsiveness ensuring optimal viewing and functionality across all devices,

    secured back-office security matrix, highlighted enhanced features such as former Directors General sections, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) display, archive and documents section, NiMet Chat Box – an intelligent chat box which acts as a NiMet agent, responding to client inquiries with precision, weather alert section, activity sub-domains for agency departments, and an integrated news section.

    Okpalaku said that the new NiMet website; “serves as a cornerstone for the modern portal structure, contributing to NiMet SmartNet, a system facilitating back-office and smart office operations management across the agency and its branches nationwide”.
