    TechSis 2023: GetBundi offers free coding courses for 500 African women

    GetBundi Education Foundation, the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm of GetBundi Education Technology Limited, has committed to the online training of 500 African women in Coding from June 1 to August 31, 2023.

    The Coding courses, which will be at no cost to the participants, come amidst a huge gap in digital skills in Africa, particularly among women, especially at a time when digital skills and tools have become increasingly essential to access services such as health, education, social protection, and financial services.

    Tagged ‘TechSis 2023’, a reversal of the male-dominated industry known as ‘Tech Bros’, the initiative aims to bridge the digital skill gender inequality in Africa.

    Mrs Juliet Ijei, course coordinator, GetBundi Education Technology and GetBundi Education Foundation, said free registration for the Coding courses will start on April 24 and end on May 23, 2023 or after the first 500 women must have registered.

    Speaking on the rationale behind TechSis, Ijei said it was in an effort to give women and girls a better deal in the tech industry dominated by men and also prepare them to assume their rightful place at the heights of the new economy.

    “The tech industry is no doubt a male-dominated career area across the world, and Africa is no exception. Research reveals that only 30 percent of African women make up the tech industry, which signifies that they are highly underrepresented,” Ijei said.

    According to her, despite the overwhelming percentage of women in the African continent, available data reveals that only very few are in the digital and technology space compared to men, with women in the tech space making up only about 22 percent of the industry workforce in Nigeria.

    Ijei said bias and stereotypes have continued to pose obstacles to women being properly represented in the technology industry, and women often show reluctance to take up tech-related degrees or any tech-related skills, leaving males to dominate many tech companies.

    This implies that women in sub-Saharan Africa have a high risk of missing out on the jobs of the future, with an estimated 230 million jobs in the region requiring digital skills by 2030.

    “This female digital exclusion, a phenomenon where women and girls are disproportionately left behind in accessing and using digital technologies and services, is a pervasive problem hindering the realization of a fully inclusive digital future,” she said.

    It is in an effort to bridge this digital divide that GetBundi has offered to train 500 African women who are 18 and above to learn Coding, a top-demand skill, for free, Ijeh said.

    The free Coding training, she said, would enable the women to be well-positioned to take up well-paying jobs, thereby creating a source of income for themselves.

    “Through this initiative, women and girls will get to learn programming languages such as JavaScript, Python, Scratch, and Ethical Hacking” Ijei said.

    “To ensure the effective inclusion of women in the tech sector, the TechSis initiative will be organized yearly by the GetBundi Foundation in different areas of digital skills. With GetBundi’s initiative to teach females Coding, it will undoubtedly impact the inclusion of more girls and women in the technology sector in Africa,” she said.

    Osita Oparaugo, Founder of GetBundi Education Technology, announced that Prof Florence C. Emenalo, Director, Center for Women and Gender Studies, Imo State University, Nigeria, would give the opening speech to kick-start the Coding skills training.

    “We oppose education inequality, especially with STEM and Digital Skills, and we won’t stop until millions of African women benefit from GetBundi Education Foundation. This time it is Coding, by the last quarter of this year, it will be Digital Marketing targeting 1,000 women,” Oparaugo said.

    “The women are here, the hunger to learn is there, just the opportunity and that is what GetBundi Education Foundation is presenting to women across Africa,” he said.

    GetBundi, a government-approved educational technology platform, has the goal to use technology to make STEM and Digital Skills learning across Africa accessible to all. Only recently, the educational technology platform partnered the Lagos State Government to commission a STEM laboratory at Wesley Girls Senior Secondary School, Yaba, Lagos, a pilot phase of an ongoing partnership between the Lagos State Government and GetBundi Education Technology.

    For supporting gender inclusion in communication practice, the MacArthur Foundation and Kogi State Government are among the winners of the 2023 Africa Public Relations Awards (APRA) which recognises Superior Achievement in Branding Reputation and Engagement (SABRE).

    The Department of State Security Service (DSS) and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) also bagged Certificates of Excellence.

    The annual event, hosted by Provoke Media in collaboration with the APRA, celebrates outstanding campaigns that demonstrate the highest levels of creativity, integrity, and effectiveness.

    The campaigns of the four recipients were undertaken in partnership with a multi-award-winning PR agency, Image Merchants Promotion Limited (IMPR), the Publishers of PRNigeria, and Economic Confidential.

    The MacArthur Foundation and Kogi State Government jointly won a Trophy and Certificate of Excellence for Employee Communication, and West African region categories.

    They supported PRNigeria’s crusade on gender inclusivity titled “Nigerian Ladies in PR”, where female interns and staff are trained and tasked with advocacies that promote inter-ethnic relations, national unity, good governance, and gender equality.

    The campaigns were executed through public speaking, press releases, article writing, social media engagement, and book publishing.

    The DSS campaign was recognised under Public Sector/Government Category for tackling lingering fuel scarcity threatening the Ember Months through stakeholder engagement and effective communication.

    The NITDA campaign was recognised under Public Affairs/Government Relations category for deploying mainstream and social media to counter misconceptions by educating the public on the benefits of its Code of Practice for Social Media and Online Platforms.

    All submissions were evaluated by a jury of industry leaders. The trophies and certificates will be presented to the winners at the SABRE award ceremony on May 18, at the 2023 APRA conference in Lusaka, Zambia.

    NASENI: Labour unions back tenure extension for EVC, seek more funds

     The joint action congress of the staff unions in the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), yesterday supported two-year tenure extension for the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the agency, Prof. Muhammad Sani Haruna, by President Muhammadu Buhari.

    They said the extension will help to consolidate many ongoing inventions and interventions in different sectors in the country.

    They described the decision as the “smartest move” by the President to stabilise researches and inventions by NASENI.

    They said the few additional years would facilitate weapon production, development of first-ever aircraft in West Africa and enhance capacity for solar cell production.

    But the unions pleaded with the government to release the funds approved for NASENI by the National Assembly.

    They alleged that the agency has only been able to access  8% budgetary allocations.

    They also urged the government to expedite action on the new wage structure for NASENI workers.

    The unions announced their support for Buhari’s action at a briefing in Abuja after a congress.

    The associations are the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and Technical Staff Association of NASENI (TSAN).

    The media session was addressed by TSAN President, Comrade  (Dr.) Oluwaseyi Ogungbenro and NASU-NASENI Coordinator,  Engr. Tijani Wakili.

    Ogungbenro, who presented the position of  the two associations, said: “The unions received with great delight, the decision of the Federal Government of Nigeria to extend by two years the tenure of our indefatigable, pragmatic, productive, industrious and dynamic Executive Vice Chairman, Prof M.S. Haruna (OFR).

    “We wish to state unequivocally that the entire workforce in NASENI stands with NASENI management under the leadership of Prof. Haruna and accept the tenure extension of our dear Executive Vice Chairman, Prof M.S. Haruna, in good faith and with great joy and gladness.

    “This move will in no doubt help to consolidate on various ongoing Federal Government interventions through NASENI in the various sectors of economy such as Agriculture, Power, Youth Empowerment, Aviation, Security and Transportation, to mention a few.

    “NASENI under the watch of Prof M.S. Haruna (OFR) has demonstrated uncommon capacity in utilizing science and technology to turn around the fortunes of this nation through its various programs, interventions, research output, technology transfer, collaborations, reverse engineering and much more.

    “The further years granted Prof. Haruna  will help to ensure Nigeria is self-sufficient in food security, stand out in home grown technology in weapon production, develop first ever aircraft in West Africa, develop capacity for solar cell production, finish the production line for home grown transformer production and ensure agricultural and industrial tools manufacturing for food safety and industrial revolution, etc.

    “All these and other ongoing programmes of the agency birthed by this great technocrat will definitely turn around the economy of this great country in the nearest months.”

    He said the unions regarded the tenure extension as the “smartest move” for the sake of Nigerian economy.

    He added: “It is therefore the smartest move by President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, to grant Prof. Haruna tenure extension to help the incoming government and Nigerian economy.

    “The unions therefore profoundly thank Mr. President for the political will to reposition NASENI under the presidency and implement NASENI act as regards its funding.”

    But the unions pleaded with the government to release the funds approved for NASENI by the National Assembly.”

    He claimed that the agency has only been able to access  8% budgetary allocations.

    He also called on all agencies responsible for ensuring new salary structure for NASENI to expedite action.

    He  said: “However, it may interest you to note that till now NASENI has only been able to access 8% of the funds approved by National Assembly and signed by the President.

    “If NASENI has been able to do so much in one year with 8%, one can only imagine what NASENI will achieve if granted access to 100% of its approved funding.

    “We therefore graciously and firmly appeal to relevant authorities: the Honorable Minister of Finance Budget and National Planning, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Nigerian Governors Forum and National Economic Council to ensure the release of the remaining funds without further delay because NASENI remains the economical and technological solution for myriad of problems confronting this great nation.

    “The advanced nations of the world are where they are today in their military might and competitive economy mainly because of the robust spending on science and technology. This we cannot shy away from if we must surmount our problems and grow our economy.

    “We also wish to use this medium to call on all responsible for ensuring new salary structure for NASENI to expedite action to further motivate NASENI workforce who now works round the clock to reposition the agency.

    “Working under Prof. M.S. Haruna has made the staffers of the agency work 25 hours a day so as to ensure the country is technologically turned around to meeting its various challenges and solve its economic problems.

    “There is no better motivation to workers than effective and adequate wages.”

    They thanked the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbanjo, Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), the National Assembly, the Chief of Staff to the President, the Minister of Finance and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation for their efforts in ensuring NASENI is rightly funded.

    Cybersecurity is in the midst of a paradigm shift. Artificial intelligence (AI) has become the linchpin of modern security strategies, propelled by forecasts that global cybercrime damages could reach $24 trillion annually by 2027. Yet the significance of AI in cybersecurity transcends mere threat detection; it also holds the potential to catalyze economic empowerment and innovation in regions historically excluded from technology booms.

    Recent studies underscore AI’s potential to democratize opportunity. A 2022 Stanford Human-Centered AI (HAI) report revealed that novice developers with limited coding experience completed prototype builds 45% faster when assisted by AI-driven coding tools, compared to advanced developers working alone. This rapid onboarding illustrates a key advantage: the learning curve for AI is notably less steep than for traditional coding. For underserved groups, that accessibility could be the ticket to entering high-demand fields such as AI-driven cybersecurity.

    The Promise and Complexity of Agentic AI

    While traditional AI models—such as Large Language Models (LLMs)—excel at pattern recognition and data generation, the next frontier, known as Agentic AI, promises to be a game-changer. Agentic AI systems can not only analyze information but also act on it, navigating dynamic environments and making decisions autonomously. This opens significant possibilities in fields like healthcare, energy, and logistics, where AI-driven agents could automate entire workflows.

    However, widespread adoption of Agentic AI depends on public trust, which hinges on rigorous testing and evaluation. Unlike LLMs, agentic systems can independently engage with external environments, making exhaustive evaluation practically impossible. Industry players, incentivized to improve AI intelligence, may place less emphasis on comprehensive testing. In this context, government intervention becomes critical—especially for African nations aiming to benefit from this transformative technology. For instance, the Nigerian government could offer targeted funding or compute grants for startups pursuing agentic AI reliability, ensuring these systems are advanced and trustworthy.

    Traditionally, cybersecurity has been reactive. Security teams would wait for threats to emerge—often flagged by signature-based antivirus software or user reports—and then scramble to contain them. This approach was resource-intensive and commonly led to “alert fatigue,” as analysts became overwhelmed by excessive notifications, many of which were false positives. As adversaries grew more sophisticated, it became evident that a purely reactive strategy was insufficient; by the time an attack was detected, the damage was often already done.

    AI has fundamentally changed this paradigm.
