India’s virus cases surge past seven millions mark

INDIA became the second country after the United States to record over seven million COVID-19 cases yesterday, as the pandemic continues to spread across the South Asian nation at a rapid pace.

The total tally of cases stood at 7,053,806 with 74,383 new infections since Saturday, according to a bulletin issued by the Federal Health Ministry.

There were 918 deaths in the same period, taking total fatalities to 108,334.

The virus has spread at an alarming pace in India since authorities started easing a strict lockdown at the end of May.

The first case of COVID-19 in India was reported on January 30 and the tally reached its first million on July 16.

The spread has been exponential since, with six million cases added in less than three months.

But the latest trends show a decline.

An average of 70,000 daily cases has been reported over the past three weeks, compared to 90,000 daily in the first two weeks of September.

Nonetheless, India has still been reporting the highest daily infections globally for over a month.

Experts warn that the current lull could be temporary as winter approaches, along with the Hindu festival season as more and more people go back to workplaces.

The federal government has advised regional administrations that they can open schools and cinema halls with 50 per cent attendance from mid-October.

At the current pace, India, a country of 1.3 billion people, looks set to soon overtake the U.S. – with its 7,717,633 cases – as the country with the most infections.

In a positive, new recoveries of COVID-19 patients in India have exceeded fresh cases for more than three weeks, the health ministry said.

India has the highest number of recovered patients in the world, with a recovery rate of 86.2 per cent.

India also has a much lower death rate than other worst-hit countries – around half of the death toll of 214,370 recorded in the U.S., which has less than a quarter of the population.

Brazil meanwhile has recorded 150,000 deaths.

Many epidemiologists attribute India’s low death rate to a young population.

Some experts also say that the overall fatalities have been low due to under-counting in the country.

The videographer behind last Saturday’s viral video alleging the killing of a young man by a team of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) has been reportedly released from Police custody.

Winners emerge in Ajinomoto’s cooking competition

    By Adekunle Yusuf

After a fierce contest, winners have emerged in a cooking competition organised by the West African Seasoning Company Limited (WASCO), makers of Ajinomoto, a seasoning ingredient, for members of Home Economics Teachers Association of Nigeria (HETAN), Lagos State chapter.

According to the management of WASCO, the cooking competition was put together to promote ideas and practices that impact and strengthen the well-being of individuals and families.

The cooking competition, which had four female and two male contestants representing the six districts of HETAN in Lagos, saw the participant from district three, Adeyemo Ademola, emerge a winner.

His three-course meal of Ogbonor soup, oatmeal, banana pudding, and zobo drink was adjudged the best.

Ezekiel Ogundele of district six came second while Ibojo Mercy Bukola of district five came third.

The winners smiled home with various prizes while consolation prizes were given to other contestants, including audience members who participated actively.

Active audience members went home with various gift items, including Ajinomoto and other food seasonings produced by the Japanese company.

Adeyemo, who could not hide his joy, commended WASCO’s management for enhancing their culinary knowledge through its cooking products, adding that “Ajinomoto is the best seasoning that every home all over the world should use because it truly brings out the deliciousness in food.”

Ogundele, the first runner-up, said the seasoning product is the secret of his culinary success.

“I am a caterer and I use Ajinomoto for my cooking and my customers love the taste of my food. It is important to know the right quantity to use for each meal and since I have been using it, I have never heard any complaint from my customers,” he said.

While congratulating the winners and other contestants during the event in Lagos, WASCO’s Head of Marketing, Isah Hassan Shallangwa, said building capacity on nutrition is a tool to enhance human well-being and all aspects of family life.

He added that contrary to unfounded fears about using seasonings in foods, research findings around the world have dispelled doubts about the health implications of consuming Ajinomoto.\

READ ALSO: Nutrition experts reaffirm Ajinomoto’s safety

One major benefit of using Ajinomoto is that it helps in reducing salt intake without compromising food taste, Shallangwa said. “The benefits of the seasoning include enhancing and promoting the deliciousness of our meals; it reduces salt intake and it is rich in glutamate one of the free amino acids. Almost all seasoning contains MSG,” he said.

HETAN Lagos chapter President, Mrs. Olorunfunmi Janet Olabisi, noted members “are particularly delighted with the added knowledge that Ajinomoto helps with a salt reduction in our food without any loss to the deliciousness.

“Now that WASCO has demonstrated this in the cooking competition, we are happy. It is now our duty to take this information to our students and the general public.”

Also commending HETAN members for their commitment to individual and family well-being and progress, WASCO Corporate Communication Manager, Mrs. Francisca Ikediashi, urged home economics teachers to continue to dispel any myth or misconception about Ajinomoto.

She reiterated that WASCO is committed to working with HETAN towards achieving human well-being through the promotion of ideas and practices that bring about good nutrition.

Police step into HealthPlus, Alta Semper feud

    Our Reporter

The Federal Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) of the Nigeria Police has invited the founder of pharmaceutical retail firm Healthplus, Mrs. Olubukunola George, over a dispute with her foreign investment partner, Alta Semper Capital LLC UK.

George, according to the letter of invitation, is scheduled to appear at noon on Monday, October 12, 2020.

She is expected to be quizzed for alleged involvement in “Unlawful seizure, conduct likely to cause a breach of peace and threat to life”.

The invitation letter dated October 8 and signed by Musa Adze, Commissioner of Police (Anti-Fraud), FCID, Abuja reads: “This office is investigating the above-mentioned case in which your name has featured prominently.

“In the light of the above, you are requested to interview the Commissioner of Police, Anti-Fraud Section, Force Criminal Investigations Department, Area 10, Abuja through ACP Elaigwu O. Gabriel.”

As of the time of filing this report, it was unclear if George had received the letter.

Police sources said the invitation arose from a petition by Alta Semper Capital with which George has been locked in a dispute for about a year.

Sources at the FCID said the foreign equity firm’s inability to take over the company, following its announcement of George’s sack as CEO on 25 September, forced it to adopt other measures.

It was alleged the foreign firm attempted to sack Prudential Guards Limited, the security firm hired by HealthPlus.

In a letter dated 28 September and signed by Afsane Jetha and Zachary Fond, both Alta Semper directors, the equity firm said it had terminated the contract of the security firm with immediate effect.

It ordered the firm to withdraw its personnel from HealthPlus premises as well as hand over the keys to Jetha and Fond.

George responded to the letter by petitioning the Inspector-General of Police, alleging a threat to her life and HealthPlus properties.

It was gathered a team of policemen visited George’s office on Thursday while she was not on seat.

A HealthPlus source said she could have been arrested if she was in the office and wondered why the police were involved in a purely civil matter.

“This is a purely civil matter and it is surprising that the police, especially the anti-fraud unit, are interested.

“It is even worse that there is a pending injunction restraining our equity partners from what they are doing.

“They have disregarded the injunction. Hearing of the suit that led to the injunction is billed to resume on Monday. It is telling that the police want her to come on Monday.

“That they have ignored the pending injunction is also telling, as it suggests they have the backing of one or two influential Nigerians working against a Nigerian business,” he said.

George has retained control of the company because HealthPlus management maintained there is a pending Federal High Court motion on notice for an interlocutory injunction seeking to restrain the directors and shareholders from changing the leadership of the company.
