Alleged pension fraud: Absence of judge, Maina stall trial

    Agency Reporter

The absence of Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja, and Abdulrasheed Maina, ex-Chairman, Pension Reformed Task Team (PRTT), on Monday, stalled the continuation of the ongoing money laundering trial.

Although Justice Abang and Maina were not in court for the day’s proceeding, Sen. Ali Ndume, who is standing as surety for the ex-pension reformed boss, was in court.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had arraigned Maina (1st defendant) before Justice Abang, on Oct. 25, 2019, alongside his son, Faisal; and firm, Common Input Property and Investment Ltd.

Although Maina is facing 12-counts bordering on money laundering, he had pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

It would be recalled that the former pension reformed chair was recently released from Kuje Prison nine months after he was able to produce the senator who deposed to an affidavit to always bring the 1st defendant to court at every adjourned date or forfeit the N500 million bail bond.

NAN also reports that Ndume, who represents Borno South in the National Assembly, had told the court, on Oct. 2, that he did not know the whereabouts of Maina after the 1st defendant was absent from court for the third time.

The judge, in the last sitting, had ordered Ndume to produce Maina unfailing at today’s (Monday’s) proceeding or he would be forced to grant the EFCC’s prayers to revoke Maina’s bail and issue a warrant of arrest against him.

Besides, the anti-graft agency had also prayed the court to make an order for the lawmaker to forfeit the N500 million bail bond to the Federal Government and be remanded in prison pending the time he was able to meet the pledge.

At the resumed trial on Monday, counsel to the parties and Sen. Ndume were all in court at about 9 am but Justice Abang and Maina were not in court.

Maina’s case was number two on the course list.

The court registrar, after litigants in cases scheduled for the day, had waited for over an hour, announced that the day’s sitting would not be holding.

“The court is indisposed and all criminal cases slated for today will be adjourned until tomorrow, Tuesday, including the case between the Federal Government and Abdulrasheed Maina,” the registrar said.

All efforts to interview Sen. Ndume were unsuccessful as the lawmaker said he would not speak since the court did not sit.

“Aketi has blazed the trail: Be part of his success story” Akoko Communities urged

    Agency Reporter

The entire Akoko Community has been urged to be part of the success story and victory of the Aketi/Aiyedatiwa ticket at the October 10, 2020, election.

The call was made by an Ogbagi Community leader Pastor Ola Amuda at a recent meeting at Ogbagi Akoko.

He noted that Aketi’s Government has blazed the trail in road construction, providing enabling for the establishment of industries, renovation of dilapidated schools, employment into educational and health institutions among others.

While agreeing that there is a lot still to be done in the state, he encouraged Akoko people to give their support to the Governor at the poll to allow the good works to continue and be very prominent in Akoko Communities.

Oladare Amuda who is a Member of the Civil Service Sub-Committee of the Aketi/ Ayedatiwa Campaign Organization was very emphatic that spirited individuals should also join hands with the Government and make their contributions to the society especially the rich by ploughing back to the society that brought them up.

This according to him “is becoming apparent because there is no government however affluence it has become that can successfully provide for all the needs of his people”

He encouraged Akoko People to see their votes as seeds of good things to come under Aketi/Aiyedatiwa Government. “For whatever a man sows, he shall reap. If we sow bountifully, we shall reap bountifully and if we sow sparingly, we shall reap sparingly says the Holy Book”.

Furthermore, he pleaded with Akoko people being agrarian society and noted for hard work, to put in a little sacrifice on October 10, 2020, by staying at home to cast their votes for Aketi/Ayedatiwa before going to their farms or returning to their normal businesses, “This is because individuals’ votes will be very significant in this coming election”

Finally, he commended the contributions in terms of mobilisation and various supports given by Chief Olusola Oke (SAN) for the re-election of the Governor, noting that by this singular act Chief Olusola Oke has given a good account of himself as a highly placed political leader in Ondo State.

Oyo State Chapter of EKSU Alumni elects new executives

    Our Reporter

The election which was held on Saturday, October 3, at Ayo Labiyi Hall, Lagelu Grammar School, Oremeji, Ibadan, Oyo State, witnessed a large turnout of voters who came out en masse to exercise their franchise in a peaceful environment.

  • Ajayi is my brother but Jegede is best for Ondo gov – Kuku

Ajayi is my brother but Jegede is best for Ondo gov – Kuku

    Our Reporter

In this interview, former Special Adviser to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on Niger Delta Affairs and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Kingsley Kuku, speaks on the party’s chances in this week’s governorship election in Ondo State, the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) designation of flashpoints in the state and sundry issues.

YOUR party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was able to pull off a surprise in Edo State with the victory of Governor Godwin Obaseki, but then it had the advantage of a sitting governor. Do you see a repeat of that feat in Ondo?

The PDP, my beloved party, truly has the capacity, spread, and historical acceptability across Ondo State, from the natural creeks of Arogbo Izon through the hills of Idanre to the aboriginal farmlands of Akokoland. The Edo feat can be repeated in Ondo State with the requisite attitude, tenacity, and political neighbourhood watches on election day. The PDP national leadership, governors, and state actors must sincerely work in consonance to win the governorship election in Ondo. Some leaders and governors in both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and PDP are playing reckless politics of 2023 in, and with, these isolated elections in the country.
No political party in opposition, in serious climes, plays such dangerous internal politics with the lives and wellbeing of its teeming natural membership. The late Governor Olusegun Agagu and other leaders provided very sound and enduring structural foundations for our party. It was methodically built. We remember him these days again.

Political actors who lack our party orientation have created avoidable cracks in our fabric. We shall return to basics, the Agagu way of mobilization and consolidation, rebuild our party, and rise up stronger and better. PDP is the most widespread, acceptable, and service inclined party in Ondo State. We simply lack a political pointsman, a political striker.

A lot of people would expect you to be backing Ajayi, the candidate of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), and current deputy governor of the state since you are from the same senatorial district…

Honourable Agboola Alfred Ajayi is not just from my Senatorial District; he is my friend and brother. We started practical politics together from the same political family: the F.K. Ajih Political Lineage. He supported me with all the energy at his disposal to become a member of the Ondo State House of Assembly, and I supported him to become an elected chairman of our local government area, Ese-Odo).

We both contested the House of Representative’s primary, he won and I supported him sincerely. As a special adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan, I respectfully worked with him to improve our lot. He wanted to be Senator, but I thought otherwise and supported Pastor Yele Omogunwa to emerge. God Almighty made Honourable Agboola Ajayi deputy governor of Ondo State. The deputy governor and I are from the same ethnic group, local government, Federal Constituency, and Senatorial District. We are from the same PDP political family.
Ordinarily, it can be said that I have every reason to support my friend and brother. Unfortunately, he is of the ZLP and I am unrepentantly a member of the PDP. No matter what, I shall and do stand with my party. He will understand. I pray that God protects him and grants him his destined paths.

What stands Eyitayo Jegede out from the pack?

My party’s candidate, Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), is a complete gentleman, a dedicated professional, and an astute administrator. Despite the seeming differences of today, I thank former Governor Olusegun Mimiko for tapping into his immense resources. Jegede is a Peace, Justice, and development advocate. He will make a great governor of Ondo State.

No state truly develops sustainably without a practical sense of peace and justice to her citizenry. Eyitayo is an embodiment of that profound possibility. Despite the dynamics that produced him as our candidate and the justifiable agitation and unease in my beloved Southern Senatorial District, the PDP remains home. We are the Ondo PDP powerhouse. Let us sustain the Agagu legacy and soon, verily, it shall pay off. I plead and beg my people to vote for the PDP.

A chieftain of APC in Ondo State, Isaac Kekemeke, recently said in a video that went viral on the internet that Jegede and PDP cannot withstand federal might in Saturday’s election. How would you react to that?

Barrister Duerimini Isaac Kekemeke is my leader and older cousin. He is a very successful and effective legal practitioner. He was one of the few political actors that birthed the current political dispensation. He was a founding leader of the PDP. He is not of the frivolous ilk. He is a leader of peace. He meant no harm. I know and grew under him.

The APC can win if the, my party fails to coordinate efforts and energy sincerely on election day. Politics is practically about interests, ideas, sentiments, and hopes. Governor Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) is maternally from Ese-Odo, my local government area. He has picked a running mate from Ilaje local government area. You have leaders like Olusola Oke (SAN) and D. I. Kekemeke Esq. behind him from the South. I think the actual battleground is the south. The governor will have a great race in the south, don’t let impractical politicians deceive you.

How would you react to the designation of 62 polling units in Ese-Odo and Ilaje local government areas as flashpoints by the Independent National Electoral Commission?

I totally condemn the categorization of units in Ese-Odo and Ilaje LGAs local government areas as flashpoints by INEC. It is a lazy and reckless pronouncement with dire implications for our people and the environment.

Ese-Odo and Ilaje have been peaceful. Despite incessant security attacks on our people and communities, the territory has always been predominantly calm and peaceful. The political attacks and fatal incidents recorded so far in Ondo State have taken place in Akure, Owo, and other cities with a massive security presence. No such has occurred in the oil-rich coastal local governments.

I strongly condemn this premeditated political assault by INEC which is capable of targeting a particular candidate(s) with voter suppression effects. Political actors are merely scared of the ever-rising political consciousness of the gallant people of Ese-Odo and Ilaje local government areas. We must massively vote as usual and protect our votes.

INEC and its actors must remain neutral and impartial. It must stop endangering our people and communities unduly. It should simply conduct a free, fair, and credible election on October 10. INEC and the security agencies did well in Edo State. They should do the same in Ondo.

Survival Fund: N75B MSME, artisans grant to be distributed

    By Charles Okonji

As part of intensified efforts geared towards cushioning the devastating effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the Nigerian economy, the Federal Government has declared that the N75 billion Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME), and Artisans Survival Fund would be distributed to over 333,000 beneficiaries in the country according to the state’s population.

The Vice-Chairperson of the steering committee, MSME Survival Fund, Ibukun Awosika, who disclosed this in Lagos at the launch of the Artisan and Transport sector stream of the survival fund scheme, noted that the fund is one of the Buhari-led administration’s effort to cushion the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on MSMEs and the business community in the country.

She said the fund is under the Nigeria Economic Sustainability Plan (NESP) to support business operators with N30, 000 grant, stressing that the scheme aims to provide for 9,009 beneficiaries in each of the 36 States of the federation and the FCT by leveraging duly registered and recognized associations and clusters of registered artisans and transport organizations.

She said there is also a guaranteeing off-take priority product of the federal government across the country to purchase certain products directly from small business owners and a payroll support scheme expected to assist about 500,000 vulnerable MSMEs in meeting payroll obligations of between N30, 000 to N50, 000 per employee over a 3 month period.

Also speaking at the event, the Managing Director, Bank of Industry (BOI), Kayode Pitan, said the bank is working tirelessly with the federal government to get this fund on the way, saying that the fund divided into three streams would see the first stream disbursing funds to only artisans beginning on the 1st of October, 2020 till on the 15th of October, 2020.

The States covered by the first stream according to him include FCT, Lagos, Ekiti, Kaduna, Borno, Kano, Bauchi, Anambra, Abia, Rivers, Plateau, and Delta.

He said the second stream taking off on the 19th of October, 2020 till 31st of October 2020, would cover Edo, Ogun, Ondo, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Enugu, and Ebonyi State while the third stream scheduled to start on the 9th of October, 2020 till 21st of October, 2020 would cover Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Zamfara, Yobe, Sokoto, Nassarawa, Niger, Imo, Oyo, Osun, Jigawa, Gombe and Benue State.

  • Nigeria @60 : The unchanging misadventure

Nigeria @60 : The unchanging misadventure

    By Dr Doyin Okupe

Nigerian nation is captured in the celebratory mood of her diamond anniversary. However, it is pretty difficult for the nation to visualise the future without reflecting even briefly on the past. It is important to emphasize that hopes and aspirations from within and outside of the geographical expression known as Nigeria were very high on October 1, 1960, when the nation got her independence.

It is an undeniable fact that the Nigeria union was pretty fragile and the very foundation was glaringly faulty from independence till date. Although the intentions behind the facade of the new nation were also regretably far from being noble. It can be badly stated that the authorities that superintended Nigerian independence were culpable of forging a coerced unity on a foundation of dishonesty and masterful grand deception. This undeniable claim is definitely responsible for the noticeable crack and schism that promptly surfaced in less than a decade after the dubious birth of our new nation.

Nigeria is unarguably a nation that is positioned for greatness by God Himself going by human and natural resources that the nation is massively endowed with. Nonetheless, the southern elites, the political and military class are bound to take responsibility for what the nation eventually became in post independent Nigeria. It is necessary to clarify that
majority of the southern leaders retreated to their home bases and inadvertently abandoned the central political stage for the Northerners having lost control of the central government from the very beginning. The retreated southerns resorted to pursuing regional and personal agendas by leveraging on the advantages of their beneficial western education and acquired professionalism.

The retreated southern politicians also accepted everything thrown at them with equanimity, but occasionally they reacted with subdued vituperations and grumblings. This manifested through their media outbursts and filibustering. Noticeably, the southern leadership actually did very little to confront or curtail the flagrant and florid excesses of the Northern ruling class due to their congenital timidity.

Meanwhile, a handful of the southerners felt it was better to associate with the Northerners contrary to the wide expectation of dissociation. Sadly however, a number of daring southerners like my humble self that chose to align politically with the mainstream northern ruling class were regretably compelled to play second fiddle since we lacked the requisite political backing from our home bases notwithstanding the political constituencies. On account of this, we were denied the right to caution or protest internally; even when things were obviously wrongly done to our detriments.

Realistically, the Northern elites should as a matter of fact be held accountable for the deplorably prevalent ethnic, political, economic and developmental state in the country. Therefore, the dictum of from whom much is given, much is expected is aptly applicable here. Also, we are all witnesses to the fact that Northern military officers held sway in the governance of this nation for more than three decades. Unfortunately, these were the agonising periods when the very foundations of this country were severely damaged and nearly got completely destroyed.

Since the military left the stage in 1999, we have had two southern presidents and two northern Presidents. If the truth must be stated therefore, no significant change has been recorded till date. Essentially, if the foundation be destroyed, what can the righteous do ? Truth is that Nigerian nation and her people are yet to derive the desired significant benefits from democratic rule till date. There still exist in our body polity a regrettable absence of an elite national consensus without which a true nation cannot emerge.

In our 60 years of existence, we have not been able to overcome our primordial and primitive features of religious intolerance, tribalism, nepotism, prebendalism, greed, selfishness, disregard for law and order as well as lack of commitment to equity and social justice.

Indisputably, bribery and corruption have now become norms at all levels including private and public sectors. Religious organisations, educational institutions, corporate entities and families circles are not excluded from the scourge of bribery and corruption. Without doubt, we need to change our perspectives and review our strategies in confronting these societal ills. What had been done in the past have truly not worked and they are still not working. We must all agree that strong leadership, draconian laws and circumstantial legislations have all failed us. Without mincing words, the only realistic way forward for us as a nation is to come together and reason together publicly, honestly in a non partisan manner to address key issues. Kenya did something very similar a few years back and the result was actually worth the effort.

We need a new constitution that must be truly borne out of honest reappraisal of our journey so far and our collective vision for the future. The present constitution is fraudulent, lopsided and ill conceived. Certainly, the opening statement of our constitution is blatantly false and it is therefore not commendable. We must admit the fact that anything that is built on falsehood will definitely not stand the test of time no matter how long it take before it will fail eventually.

Before we attend to the birth of a new constitution, it is necessary to come together on a national forum and settle first the issue of corruption in our society. Meanwhile, the suggested national forum should not an avenue for blame games and scapegoatism. Efforts should be geared towards promoting willingness to forgive and the readiness to redirect our energies towards national as well as the cleansing of our institutional systems. The suggested institutional cleansing should encompass administrative, law enforcement, justice and acceptable financial practices.

At the heart of the suggested national cleansing should be the need for vigorous address of issues of hate, hurt and pains of past unforgiveness in our polity. We have too many issues that are related to unforgiveness in our land.

The North must forgive the East. In a like manner, the East must forgive the West and the North. We must all be determined to forgive the events before and after the civil war. The citizenry must be prepared to forgive the rulers as well as the plunderers. Most importantly, individuals that have acquired wealth at the expense of the nation must be given the opportunity to restitute without fear of annihilation or prosecution.

There can be no better time for us to heal this land before our collective anger, frustrations and resentments would kill this glorious land of our birth and collection patrimony.

Happy 60th anniversary to our great Nigerian nation that is full of hope pregnant with a protruding great future.

COVID-19: 6,000 Lagosians benefit from UWGN, 3M palliatives package

    By Charles Okonji

In furtherance of the efforts in alleviating suffering occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic, a non-governmental organisation, United Way Greater Nigeria (UWGN) in collaboration with 3M, an international organisation has stated that over 6,000 persons benefited from the recently concluded palliative distribution exercise in Lagos.

According to the statement made available to the press, Kamil Bakare, Executive Director, UWGN, the duo concluded the distribution of palliatives in Lagos with 2000 care packages containing staple food items and cooking ingredients to vulnerable families and individuals affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in Epe and Badagry areas of the state.

Bakare stated the Covid-19 pandemic has been unparalleled health and socio-economic crisis that has incommensurately affected the Nation’s most vulnerable, adding that UWGN is fighting tirelessly to bridge the gap between vulnerable Nigerians, corporate organisations, and businesses willing to deliver meaningful and measurable change that can advance sustainable development in Nigeria.

“With the financial support of 3M, we implemented a Covid-19 relief outreach that supported about 10 communities in the 5 administrative zones in Lagos State with 6,000 beneficiaries and will be expanding to other geopolitical zones of Nigeria. We have worked with the tireless support of local partners including the government, NGOs and religious organizations, and community representatives.

We appreciate our donors, sponsors, and volunteers for their unwavering support to fight for our cause and we are looking forward to reaching more lives during these trying times.” Bakare stressed.

  • Wealthy Africans, how valuable is your passport?

Wealthy Africans, how valuable is your passport?

Is your passport holding you back? The luxury of holding a second passport is fast becoming a necessity amongst High Net Worth Individuals (HNWI). The demand for citizenship by Investment programmes has grown increasingly in recent years amongst wealthy Africans looking to expand their opportunities and global reach.

There is a lot to consider when evaluating your investor visa options and there is no “one size fits all” approach. The cost of such programmes can range from just over $100,000 to a few million dollars, so it’s imperative investors make the right decision. Simple but ineffective

Whilst every country’s passport comes with its own visa-free travel list, a simple measure of how many countries it grants access to does not tell the full story. The “quality” of those countries matter. Access to France, for example, is more important than Kiribati in most people’s view.

While “quality” is important when making an investment decision on a second passport, combination and fit with your current passport also matters. It’s what that second passport adds in terms of additional country access that gives you the value and return for your investment.

    What is the real value?

La Vida Golden Visas, a private consultancy firm, headquartered in London, have developed a unique Passport Value Report that goes beyond simply counting visa-free countries. It helps prospective investors to see not only the true value of their existing passport but critically the incremental value of the second passport to consider as an investment. This is done through a combined measure of GDP (“wealth access”) and visitors (travel popularity) of the countries added through such investment in a second citizenship.

The problem for Nigeria and South Africa

Take the Nigerian passport as an example. Nigerian citizens have visa-free access to 54 destinations. That’s a modest 23.8% of the 227 countries and territories worldwide. It’s one of the lowest ranking passports among many of its West African neighbours, with Ghana at 73, Cameroon at 61 and Cote d’ Ivoire at 67. But the story does not end there. Nigeria’s visa-free list mainly consists of other African countries.

It does not include destinations such as Europe, the USA, China, or the UK. Places where many Nigerians may strive to do business or visit for leisure. The shocking reality is that the visa-free countries Nigerians have access to equate to just 2.1% of the world’s GDP and 3.1% of the world’s international travel popularity.

South African passport holders do slightly better. They gain access to a higher number of visa-free destinations at 112. Nearly 50% of the world perhaps? But let’s not get too carried away. In terms of “quality” this still only represents 20.2% of the world’s GDP and likewise misses out on visa free access to most of Europe, the UK,
    USA and China.

    How to fix the Problem

La Vida offers eight-second citizenship by investment programmes but one of our most popular solutions amongst our African investors is that of Grenada, in the Caribbean. Citizenship by Investment in Grenada is a fast, efficient and straightforward process, taking as little as 60-90 days to process. Grenadian citizenship provides many benefits, including visa-free travel to over 140 countries, no tax on worldwide income and no wealth, gift, inheritance or capital gains tax.

There is no interview, education, language test or management experience required, and dual citizenship is permitted. The entire process can be completed remotely.

Importantly, Grenada is also an E-2 visa treaty country with the USA, meaning approved E-2 visa applicants are eligible to start a business and live in the USA with their family. The processing time for the E-2 visa is usually only two months.

    What value does Grenada add?

Pair a Grenadian and Nigerian passport and the world begins to open up. You gain access to 163 destinations worldwide, which includes the UK, EU Schengen zone, China, and Russia. Now you have visa-free access to 58.7% of the world’s GDP, a huge improvement on the 2.1% that a standalone Nigerian Passport offers. Pair Grenada with South Africa and access to the world’s wealth climbs from 20.2% to 60.2%. Arguably increasing opportunity three-fold.

According to Paul Williams, CEO of La Vida, ‘’Grenada is an effective solution for many nationalities. Almost all our African investors applying for Grenadian Citizenship have chosen the real estate investment route. With no need to visit Grenada during the application process, minimal processing fees, and no physical residency requirement, investors are finding this a very appealing option.”

Ondo 2020: PDP women state leader charges electoral body for a peaceful election

    Our Reporter

Advocating and Enjoining the Independent National Electoral Commission on the need to ensure that it facilitates the peaceful conduct of the October 10 Gubernatorial election in Ondo State, the office of the Women State Leader of the People’s Democratic Party has lent it voice to admonishing the body to see that it carries it sole responsibility without preference to any political party and also adopting the virtues of neutrality and transparency.

In a statement signed by the Ondo State Women leader, Hon. Princess Kemisola Adesanya, she explained that over the years electoral process in the state and federation has always been married with violence which in the long run denies the people the benefits of having their votes count, “37 years ago, Ondo State had a major unpalatable experience with election-related violence which has become a bloody reference point of elections in Nigeria. It was even said that this violence was one of the precursors of the military hijack of democracy later that year, 1983.”

She also added that “ When elections are not representative of the votes of the people due to violence and violence-related issues, then politicians so “elected” cannot have a sense of responsibility or link with the people.
When votes count, we will be able to move forward and ensure that individuals and political parties that will change the lives of the people get elected into offices.”

The State Women leader and a two terms house of Assembly member of the state enjoined the body to do all its best in the discharge of its duties to resisting any form of electioneering violence as it negates the beauty and sole objective of democracy as practiced in the nation.
