  • CAN tackles Buhari over Plateau killings, demands state police to end attacks

CAN tackles Buhari over Plateau killings, demands state police to end attacks

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to stop paying lip service to the incessant killings in the country.

The association gave the advice while condemning the recent killing of about 22 people in Plateau State.

The religious body said: “Stopping the killing of the innocents by the criminals cannot be done by merely issuing press statements and holding periodical meetings with the security chiefs by the president.”

In a statement issued on Friday by its General Secretary, Barrister Joseph Daramola, CAN said until the government shows the political will by arresting and bringing culprits to book, the shedding of innocent blood would not cease.

Daramola said: “While we commiserate with the bereaved of the dastardly attack on those travellers, we were alarmed by the statement of President Buhari describing the motive behind the criminality as ‘religious persuasion.

“This is the first time that the federal government will make this type of assertion. Whenever CAN cries out against the killings of its members, the government always rises up to condemn us telling us that the terrorists and bandits that are killing are not targeting any religion but innocent people irrespective of their religious affiliations.”

Read Also; Plateau crisis: CISLAC, Nasarawa CAN, JNI condemn killings

CAN said, the reaction of the president is provocative, unacceptable and unjustifiable.

Daramola said the government should not be seen as being on the side of one religion against another, adding: “Criminals are criminals irrespective of their religious affiliations. One minister reportedly said the president lost his appetite as a result of the killing on the Plateau. Such unguarded comments and actions of the government, including the Nigeria Police, appear strange since the same people never took the convincing steps as this since the time criminals have been attacking predominantly Christian communities in the Middle belt zone especially in the same Plateau State.

“Once again, we repeat that the government was wrong in tagging the unlawful actions of the criminals as religious. While we are pained in our hearts for the callous killing of the innocent people in the buses, we are not impressed by the government’s comments which are divisive, religion-wise”.

CAN said it is shocking and disappointing to hear that the Police have deployed a ‘surveillance helicopter’ to apprehend criminals.

It wondered why the same Police did not take the same measure to apprehend the terrorists tagged bandits who are holding many people captive, including several students, in different forests.

“This government is seriously called upon to be alive to its responsibilities. Till date, no one has been held for the killing of hundreds of people in Benue State, Plateau State and Southern Kaduna. This is totally unacceptable, unjustifiable and unbelievable.

“We also call on the Federal Government to stop recycling the terrorists through the so-called deradicalisation and rehabilitation of criminals. In civilised nations, criminals who surrendered or were arrested are prosecuted and sentenced.

“We commend Senator Ndume who has been in the forefront of this campaign. As far as we are concerned, criminals who are abducting and placing heavy ransom on their victims are not bandits but terrorists and if the government has no sympathy for these criminals, let them stop them. Our security agencies have what it takes to stop these terrorists but they are playing ostrich. We charge the federal government to fix the security challenges or throw in the towel”.

The Plateau State chapter of the association called for the immediate establishment of State Police to end the incessant attacks by suspected  herdsmen in parts of the state.

Chairman of CAN in Plateau State Rev. Fr Polycarp Lubo, stated this on Thursday while speaking with reporters after he visited Bingham University Teaching Hospital, Plateau  Specialists Hospital, Ola Hospital all in Jos North Local Government Area of the state to assess the situation of the victims of the reprisal attacks on Sunday in Jos.

He said the only immediate solution to incessant attacks, killings of innocent farmers and reprisal attacks is the establishment of state police which gives powers and capacity to the state governors to take prompt action to safeguard lives and properties.

He stressed that the incessant, unlawful killings and the general feeling of insecurity going on across the nation in the past four years are indication that the present security architecture in Nigeria is no more able to assure Nigerians of their security.

“The real tragedy across Plateau State is that we risk more attack and loss of lives unless we decentralise our policing system and allow every component state to establish their own state police to protect lives and properties of it citizens.”

  • Alpha Mead’s Rent4Less raises $1m to entrench monthly rental culture in Africa

Alpha Mead’s Rent4Less raises $1m to entrench monthly rental culture in Africa

To entrench the culture of monthly rental in Africa, Rent4Less by Alpha Mead has raised a fixed-rate series one $1m private placement bond.

The Senior Secured Private bond, issued by Alpha Mead is another milestone in the series of the company’s expansion strategies to increase access to shelter and perpetuate the culture of monthly rent payment across the continent’s housing and office markets.

Rent4Less by Alpha Mead is a rental scheme designed to support individuals and small businesses with flexible, monthly pay-as-you-use rent for homes and offices.

According to Damola Akindolire, Managing Director of Alpha Mead Development Company (AMDC) – the subsidiary of Alpha Mead Group that oversees Rent4Less, the funding is coming as a result of an outstanding early growth of the product and the trust that the investment community reposes in Alpha Mead.

“Rent4Less has proven over the last 12 months that it is a product that has been designed as a response to the economic challenges that came with the pandemic. Because we are a member of a large Real Estate group, we have the opportunity of drawing insights from the experiences of other businesses within our group.

“One of those insights is the fact that the pandemic reduced the pocket size of most people and businesses and everyone has to reprioritise. So, we thought about how we can demonstrate to the market that our “We Care…” brand essence is not just platitude. And at one of our strategy sessions, we had a eureka moment: shelter is one of the basic needs of man; so, if we can take the stress of the lumpsum annual payment away from people and businesses at a time like this, we would have been solving a major problem.

“Over 80% of our growing population live in rental accommodation and we are happy that we have not just solved a major problem with Rent4Less, we have even proved within a very short time, that we can accelerate growth and replicate this success across Africa; and we thank CardinalStone Partners Group for getting on this journey with us”, Akindolire enthused.

On the impact of Rent4Less on developers and investors in building development, Akindolire noted that as a company with a deep interest in Real Estate development, AMDC is also conscious that the product must also be beneficial to landlords and Real Estate investors.

He commented: “Under our Guaranteed Rental Income Programme (GRIP), Rent4Less will also ensure that landlords enjoy early and consistent economic benefit on their assets, increase occupancy levels, and also leverage its group’s expertise in Facilities Management to ensure that landlords’ assets remain in valuable condition”.

On his part, Olusesan Ogunyooye, Head, Marketing & Corporate Communication, Alpha Mead Group, explained that the company’s goal is to demonstrate that monthly rent is also possible in Africa; and safe, secure and comfortable homes or offices should not be the exclusive preserve of those who have huge funds to either buy or pay annual rent for their home or offices.

According to him: “As basic as shelter should be, and despite its immense impact on our social architecture, not everyone in Nigeria, and indeed, a significant part of Africa, can afford a safe, comfortable and secure accommodation. This is not because developers have stopped building. In fact, a drive around some of our cities will reveal an interesting paradox of scarcity amidst plenty, with low occupancy rates on the one side and unmet demands for housing and offices on the other”.

“This funding will help us close this gap between the scarcity and plenty. It will help us bring more buildings to the market in Nigeria, and help us expand our footprint in Ghana where we just launched last month”.

“Our premise is very simple: if people earn wages monthly, and attend to their other basic needs such as clothing and food periodically; why should they pay rent annually? Money locked with landlords for 12 to 24 months could be invested in other ventures that will be of benefit to the investor, the businesses where they are invested, and by extension, our economy”. With Rent4Less, people can now pay rent monthly, quarterly, and bi-annually”.

Speaking on the product offerings, Nelson Nlemuzor, Business Manager, Rent4Less commented: “Our product is not just about the rent payment cycle; it is also about space utilization. We all know that real estate is a location-driven investment asset class, and that makes it difficult for an average income earner to stay in prime locations close to Central Business Districts (CBDs), primarily because of the rent structure in these locations.

“Rent4Less is coming to address this with its shared living or working system that allows people of like minds to share the same living or working space and pay for just what they use monthly”, he concluded.

Recall that in June 2020, AMDC fully redeemed a Series 1, tranche A 19.76% fixed rate $3.5m (N1.45bn) bond. The bond, issued in partnership with DLM Trust Company and UTL Trust Management Services, was utilised for the construction of 100 family units in Lekki, Lagos.

The company possesses a track record of world-class service delivery and remains the first and only indigenous development company certified to international standards (UKAS ISO 9001:2015). Furthermore, its triple bottom-line approach to business culminated in its bagging of the World Bank Group’s green building EDGE Advanced certification for its Lekki Pearl Estate – a first of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa.

“The industry has certain fixed rules about height and body type which foreclosed the opportunity for some people. For example, I grew up with the ambition to become a model. I nurtured the dream, but because of my “5.3” height, I was told to forget the dream of ever walking the runway.
