Police storm church, arrest pastor for allegedly collecting ransom for kidnappers

    By Ebele BONIFACE

A 45-year-old pastor, Ndifreke Udo Amos, has been arrested by operatives of the FIB Intelligence Response Team (FIB-IRT) for allegedly helping a kidnap gang in the abduction of an 80-year-old man, Pa Anthony Ugbuzor Idornigie.

The octogenarian victim was said to be sitting in his house at No 7, Garage Street, Itoki, Lagos on November 14 last year when Amos walked in with a bible in his hand and started preaching to him.

In the middle of Amos’ sermon, another stranger was said to have walked into the compound and claimed to be in search of accommodation. Pa Idornigie was said to have offered him one, but the stranger said he should follow him to collect the amount demanded as rent because he did not have the money on him.

While Pa Idornigie was said to have been reluctant about following the stranger, Pastor Amos allegedly urged him to do so. In the process of following the stranger, however, Pa Idornigie was abducted by some people the police now believe were working in cahoots with the pastor.

Three days later, Pa Idornigie’s abductors were said to have called the family, demanding N20 million as ransom.

The police was said to have become curious about Pa Amos’ involvement in the kidnap saga on realising that a POS account belonging to him was being used by the gang to receive the sums paid in installments as ransom.

FIB-IRT operatives were said to have swung into action immediately they learnt about Pa Idornigie’s plight, rescuing the octogenarian from his abductors and tracing Amos to Agbado/Crossing part of Lagos State where his POS kiosk was situated.

The police source said investigation into the matter revealed that Pastor Amos was a member of the gang with the specific role of going to the houses of would be victims to prepare the ground for their abduction.

A female member of the gang was also said to be assigned the role of making friends with people believed to be well doing and could be kidnapped for ransom, while others were saddled with the task of taking custody of the gang’s victims until their ransoms were paid.

Members of Idornigie’s family were said to have paid various installments beginning with N850,000 on November 17, 2020. Other payments made to the gang, according to the police source, include another N850,000, N250,000, N50,000, N50,000, N200,000, N650,000, N350,000 and N150,000.

The last payment of N150,000 to the said account was said to have been made by the police themselves and tagged “payment for ransom” after the matter had been reported by the family; a development said to have made Amos very uncomfortable.

A visit the FIB-IRT operatives made to Amos’ kiosk was said not to have yielded any result as they met Amos’ absence. They were, however, told upon enquiries that Amos was the pastor in charge of a nearby church where a service was going on.

The operatives then joined the congregation for service during which they monitored the suspect and planned how to arrest him without causing a steer or disrupting the service.

They were said to have allowed the service to end before they started following Amos to his house without him suspecting that they were on his trail.

He was eventually picked up in a dramatic manner as he was about to enter his house.

The operatives were said to have stopped him as he was about to get into his compound, flashed their identity cards and told him that he was under arrest. Thereafter, they told him to lead them to his POS kiosk where they recovered some vital documents, including those that were used in transactions involving the kidnapping gang.

Amos was said to have admitted ownership of the account number into which the ransom of N150,000 was paid, and upon interrogation at the Southwest office of FIB-IRT headed by Joel Igbinazaka Ugowe, a Superintendent of Police, he was also said to have confessed that he removed the female attendant at the POS kiosk, and conducted the transaction himself because he feared that the secret deals could become known to the young lady.

Speaking with the reporter in an interview, Amos, who described himself as an indigene of Akwa Ibom State, said: “I am a pastor with The Will of God Gospel Mission church in Agbado/Crossing, a suburb of Lagos State, and my residence is very close to the church.

“I became a pastor in 2015 and I have been with the church since then. I was not on salary, but the General Overseer pays me a monthly stipend as upkeep money and also pays my children’s school fees.

“Rich men and women as well as others who God has blessed in one way or the other also give me money, especially when they are giving testimonies and thanking God for what He did for them.”

Asked why he displayed his account number on his POS kiosk, he said it was so that his customers who had need of it would have access and not for criminal purposes.

He added: “I was riding a commercial motorcycle to augment the upkeep money my General Overseer was giving me.

“In 2019, my General Overseer and founder of the church gave me N300,000 to start a POS business and I started it between September and October.

“I reside very close to my church, so I put a female operator there because I would not be able to do the two works at the same time.”

On the allegation that he sacked the lady attendant at his kiosk because he feared that she could leak his deals with kidnappers, he said: “I did not sack the girl. I only told her that I wanted to manage the POS by myself because from what was happening, I felt she would not be able to manage the problems with the operation of POS.”

He also denied being the one that gave the kidnappers his account number, saying: “Yes, it was my account details that were sent to the victim’s family to pay in the ransom. But I was not the one who sent it and I did not know who sent it.

“I pasted my account details in front of my POS kiosk for easy access by my customers who might have need for it. I did not paste it there for criminal purposes.

“Eight hundred and fifty thousand naira (#850,000) was paid twice through my POS. They had started paying in money when my girl was still operating the POS for me. They were paying bit by bit: N25,000, N50,000, N50,000, N100,000, N200,000 and so on.

“The one of N150,000, I was in the church when she called me and said the customer was in a hurry and asked me whether the money had entered and I said yes I saw an alert with ‘ransom demand’.

“I had to call her back to explain more because I suspected that something was fishy with the tag ‘ransom demand’.

“I later went to the nearest police station to report the strange occurrence. When I got there and reported the matter, the police gave me a sheet to write a statement.

“After writing my statement, they asked me to go home and relax and see it as one of the troubles one usually experiences in that kind of business.

“But to my greatest surprise, on the 24th February, 2021, the same police officer who asked me to go home and relax was the person who came and arrested me.

He took me to the police station and handed me over to plain-clothed operatives who had been there waiting for my arrival at the police station.

“They were very happy to see me, and that was how I was arrested.”

  • Dambazau: Christians not persecuted in Nigeria

Dambazau: Christians not persecuted in Nigeria

Lieutenant General Abdulrahman Dambazau (Rtd) is the immediate past minister of interior.Prior to that, he had served as Chief of Army Staff (2008-2010).In this interview with Senior Correspondent, FANEN IHYONGO ,Dambazau expresses shock at the recent statement made by the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto,Dr.Matthew Hassan Kukah,to the US Congress,in which he alleged persecution of Christians under the Buhari Administration.Dambazau says Kukah got it all wrong. He believes that the outspoken cleric, having observed issues in the handling of the security situation in the country, ought to have advised the government positively, instead of whipping up religious sentiments that could end up compounding the already tensed  security environment.

    Kukah’s statement surprising:

When I read the news report on Bishop Kukah  I thought he was quoted out of context. So, I dug to find out for myself the statement he delivered to the House Foreign Committee on the Nigerian situation on religious freedom, on July 13, 2021, virtually. I respect Bishop Kukah:we have been very close; we share and discuss issues of national importance.

But I was very surprised, particularly, by  his accusation that the Christians in Nigeria are being persecuted, where he cited about three examples;that Boko Haram, bandits and all other criminals use religious platforms to commit all kinds of acts of terrorism. So, I wondered why he should make that kind of statement.Everybody knows that these categories of criminals do not discriminate in terms of religion. What they do is that they have a sect’s belief and anybody who does not believe in the way they think is automatically an enemy and he becomes a target.

And we all know that the main thrust of this crisis is in the Northeast, and most of the victims, without contradictions, I will say more than 95 percent are Muslims. But it is not about religion. It is about the fact that these victims are Nigerians and they require protection against these horrible people. But Kukah makes it look as if it is a systemic issue that may be, government is coming out, as a matter of policy, to persecute these people.

Everybody knows that this issue (insecurity) started a long time ago. Before this government came into power in 2015 there were cases when these people went out to burn churches and mosques and kill individuals. As a matter of fact, they have killed religious functionalists like Jafar Mahmud Adam, who was murdered in Kano, and Muhmad Awal Albani who was murdered in Zaria. These are Muslim clerics who were murdered by this group of people. So, for Bishop Kukah to attribute that to  persecution is a kind of thing I am surprised why the bishop should mention it.

    Majority of victims are Muslims:

Bishop Kukah is very close to Zamfara as  bishop of Sokoto diocese. He knows where the main problem is in the Northwest. The concentration of this violence is in Zamfara, not far from where he lives. And he knows that 99 percent of the people in Zamfara are Muslims, and almost on a weekly basis, we hear of 40s, 50s and 60s being killed by these bandits in Zamfara. So, for him to use that as a way of Christian persecution is what really surprised me. I think, as a bishop and man of God, if he is fighting any kind of injustice, he should fight for humanity. He even mentioned to the Americans that he is focusing his statement on Christians and even within Christianity, on Catholic Christians.

Kukah should emulate other religious activists who, really, when they are fighting what they perceive as injustice, they fight against it for everybody, regardless of religion, race, tribe or ethnicity etc. This is what called my attention and I thought it is important to correct this perception. After all, the amount of efforts, in terms of logistics and manpower  that the government is putting into this should be commended. For example, how many soldiers have we lost in this counter terrorism? Many of them, and they are spread, covering all tribes and religions, and they are Nigerians. Then how many of these terrorists or insurgents have been killed? Many. So, for Kukah to paint this situation as a religious persecution against Christians is really what called my attention and I think it is wrong.

    Nigeria’s insecurity a regional issue:

In my opinion, and based on my knowledge and experience, I believe this is an issue that is beyond Nigeria alone. And President Buhari demonstrated that when he first came onboard in 2015. What did he do? He went round   neighbouring countries -Chad, Cameroon, Niger and even Benin Republic – to discuss security. And as a follow up, he invited them to Nigeria where, I remember, they held a meeting on security concerns of the region. So, from the onset, we knew it was a regional issue. Because, these terrorists or insurgents are spread, not just from Nigeria, (Nigeria is the main focus, by virtue of our territorial integrity and population) but across all these countries that we share borders with. And you know these borders are porous and also, the weapons being smuggled into Nigeria come through most of these countries so that a regional effort is required to deal with it. So, from 2015, the president realized that and that was why he took those steps.

Nigeria is playing its own role, leading the multinational joint task force to deal with the situation. Of recent, the president visited Niger Republic for the same purpose. So, people should appreciate efforts being made by the government. After all, if it were that easy to nip it in the bud, it would have been done since 2011 when this thing started.Remember there was a UN office bombing in Abuja and many explosions in so many places, and it had been ongoing before this government came into power. I think, to deal with this issue, regional partnership must be emphasized. We must focus on getting everybody together. Even within Nigeria itself, we find a situation where people within communities even aid and abet  bandits, by giving them information and supplying them logistics and helping them smuggle in weapons that they use against citizens of the country.

Socioeconomic issues of unemployment and poverty must be tackled:

We need to make people realize the fact that it is not just the government that has a role to play but everybody. And not just the federal government, but states and the local government councils have tremendous roles to play. And it is not just about a fighting force because, you know, there are underlying issues that are socioeconomic in nature. The issues of unemployment and poverty and environmental degradation are all drivers in this conflict. Environmental degradation, for instance, is a result of climate change, which has affected the water level in the Lake Chad basin and reduced by about 95 percent and more than 40 million people depend on that for livelihood. So, what else can they do? They don’t have the means of livelihood, having being taken over by climate change. Desertification of the land by 600m every year moves down south wards, forcing people to migrate, including herders and farmers. And that is why you find increased conflict between herders and farmers. So, these are issues that are complex that you need to look at, not just the brute force. Yes, the use of brute force is important but force alone cannot tackle security challenges. States and local governments must also focus on socioeconomic issues to be able to secure people, and above all, it is a regional issue that requires us to come together, with the help of the international community.

    Positive advice rather than criticism:

Recently, the government said it is bringing new aircraft and a lot of equipment to fight insurgency. So, anybody who says the Nigerian government is doing nothing in tackling insecurity in the country is wrong. Maybe it requires to do more, but it depends as resources permit, and government is spending much. No government will be happy if its citizens are not secured, after all, it is reflected in Chapter 2 of the constitution that the purpose of government is to ensure security and welfare of the people. No government will neglect that. Every government wants a peaceful environment, knowing well there cannot be any development without peace, and there cannot be peace without security. Therefore, if anybody has an observation, he should advise the government positively and not to whip sentiments that will make the security environment more complex. This kind of statement by Bishop Kukah can create panic among major religious groups. We should be able to preach peace and that is the major role of clerics.”

Be contented, pray for peace and gratitude – Eddy Osaman to youths

    Our Reporter

Nigerian-Canadian Adodo Eddy Osaman, famously known on Instagram as Eddyosaman is popular for his passion as an advocate of overseas education and scholarship.

Aside from being a training specialist at Teleperformance, the world’s largest customer service company, Adodo Eddy Osaman is also a renowned influential personality for the African migrant community seeking a greener pasture or the Golden Fleece overseas.

Eddy Osaman who is also the CEO of iGroup Nigeria recently urged Nigerian youths home and in the diaspora to be contented with themselves, pray for peace and always be grateful to God for his blessings.

While enlightening intending migrants about the ladder of human desires, and the need for individuals to be content even in their drive for greater goals, Eddy Osaman said: “While you desire to be in Canada, there’s someone living in a country far worse than where you are, and is praying to be in your current situation. The person who just arrived Canada is currently thinking about how to find a good job to meet up with the bills. The one who has a good job and able to pay the bills is currently thinking about how to buy a car to avoid catching the bus especially during the cold months.”

For even those who appeared to be well-off, Eddyosaman avowed that they have their challenges: “The one who’s got a good job and a car is currently being pressured by their friend’s success stories of owning their own home in Canada. The one who’s got a home is currently thinking about how to work more jobs to pay the mortgage so they don’t lose the house. The one who just paid for their home in full is currently worried about owning more houses and the one who owns multiple houses has been dreaming about that gig investment his friend just told him about.”

He further pointed out that even so-called millionaires are not immune from the inordinate desire to acquire more. “The one who owns several investments is thinking about making some millions so He can be part of the millionaires club in their community. The one who’s a millionaire wants to make billions,” he noted.

These desires, Eddyosaman further opined, tend to create dark feelings within the individual, thereby making it difficult for people to truly celebrate the successes of others. “And even when we do, it’s usually not from the heart,” he stated.

The bottomline, according to him, is for the individual to be content.
Said he: “Picture life as a ladder. Wherever you are on that ladder, your life is not bad compared to anyone above you. They just got there before you. You will also get there. All you need to pray for is peace and gratitude to enjoy your present. You’re already far blessed than what your mind is currently telling you. Just pause and look around.”

  • Bridge prepares pupils for secondary school

Bridge prepares pupils for secondary school

    By Kofoworola Belo-Osagie

Going to secondary school is a big step after primary education and not many pupils are prepared for it.

However, Bridge Academy, a network of nursery and primary schools in underserved communities in Lagos and Osun State, made it part of graduation rituals this year to prepare its Primary Six pupils who would be resuming JSS1 Class in various  secondary schools by September.

During an Orientation event tagged: “Leaving for Secondary School: Developing Self Responsibility, Character and Excellence”, the pupils were enlightened about what to expect in secondary school.

The session exposed them to the changes that would occur – like change in the teaching methodology and learning environment, physical development, social, peer and culture pressure, social vices and misdemeanour, meeting people from diverse backgrounds and making new friends.

A facilitator at the event held for Bridge pupils in Ikorodu, Mrs. Amina Lawal, said the pupils needed to learn to adapt and be independent, especially those going to the boarding facilities of Federal Government Colleges or private secondary schools.

Mrs. Lawal also said the pupils needed to learn to be self-reliant and take responsibility for self as monitoring by parents, teachers and other adults would reduce.

She said having these qualities, in addition to learning teamwork, would give them an edge over others less prepared.

“As much as self-responsibility is required, a needed characteristic for success is interdependence: being able to work with others to achieve a set goal without being exposed to wrong influences.” she noted.

The overall best pupil for the 2019/2020 academic session, Shiji Sowemimo, was a special guest at the event.  Now in JSS1 (going to JSS2), Sowemimo shared how his experiences at Bridge helped him to excel in his secondary school.

He urged all Bridge pupils to continue to be worthy ambassadors of the school, be resourceful, plan to succeed and never get tired of making a difference.

“I am privileged to stand before you to share my experiences and successes with you. This is only possible because of the support I have received from my mother, teachers and level of hard work and dedication I have put into my studies,” he said.

  • Lagos SUBEB shores up safety with first aid boxes

Lagos SUBEB shores up safety with first aid boxes

    By Kofoworola Belo-Osagie

The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) took safety in schools a notch higher with the acquisition of first aid boxes for its 1,016 primary schools.

However, health officers say it should go a step further by training teachers and others in the school environment to put them to effective use – a move the permanent board member in charge of co-curricular activities, Mrs. Sherifat Adedoyin, said is in the works.

She said the boxes contained iodine, glucose, paracetamol, hand sanitizers, hand gloves, moko lubricant and many other items.

Speaking at the presentation/distribution of the boxes to the schools last Thursday in Lagos, the SUBEB Chairman, Mr. Wahab Alawiye-King, who was represented by board member in charge of Quality Assurance, Dayo Israel, thanked Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for approving the project.

“The chairman followed the approval of the project with his excellence because of the significance of equipping our schools with first aid boxes.  With this significant activity, we will see that our children are going to receive healthcare in school. The chairman would like to appreciate the education secretaries and head teachers and hopes that the boxes would be well utilized,” he said.

In an interview, the desk officer in charge of health at Agege LGEA, Bakare Adebayo, praised the board for the initiative, saying the first aid boxes would make the schools safer and able to manage injuries among the pupils, especially during sporting activities.

“I would say an appreciation to the governor to start with because he has shown concern for safety. The pupils are up and doing; they engage in sporting activities so there is no how they can afford not to experience injuries when they play around in the school.  So there is a very good reason for us to have a well-equipped first aid box to cushion the effect of injuries before the arrival of medical personnel,” he said.

I will implore SUBEB to train the head officers how to use the first aid and after training is we are going to step down for our health teachers.
