Old boys fault Bello’s plan to convert school to barracks

    By Adekunle Jimoh, Ilorin

Okene Secondary School Old Students Association (OSSOSA) has kicked against the planned conversion of the school by Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, to military barrack.

The association said that any attempt to acquire the school for the military was tantamount to obliterating the credentials products of the school hold.

Established in 1974 as a teacher’s college, the old students said the school had produced some of the brightest brains in the country.

Speaking during a reunion party, Chairman, 1981Set, Prince Ekundayo Asaju said: “This is one period that we need to devote everything for the sake of that school. The school as we speak is endangered. This is not a school that one administration of government can just cancel out.

“It is bad for the system and a very big blow on whatever credentials these brains and the people that have passed through that institution are holding. We are against the scrapping of the school. We have been pleading with Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, to give us a listening ear. We are ready to intervene on behalf of the school.

“The national body of OSSSA had already made commitment to be part and parcel of the running of the school. We are ready for any kind of negotiation just for the sake of the school.

“From available information, Governor Bello’s administration is about converting the school to military barracks. It has been handed over to the military, though the military is yet to move into the premises.

“Our association sent a letter to the governor last year and we followed that up with an open letter in some national dailies appealing to him to grant us audience. We are yet to hear from the governor, but there has not been a formal takeover of the school.

“If AbdulAzeez Attah Memorial Secondary School, Government Secondary School (GSS), Ilorin is still there, if Titcombe College Egbe are still there standing, OSS should not be an exemption. The Okene Secondary School has excelled in all spheres of life.

“OSSOSA  should be likened to the like of Barewa College. The school has turned out scores of brightest brains in Nigeria and it is still working. We are ready to make contributions for the rediscovery and regeneration of the school.

“We are against the implementation of the acquisition of the school by the state government. The survival of the school will be the main focus of my administration.”

Nigerian Optometrists set high expectations for new elected president Awiaka

    Our Reporter

Nigerian Optometrists have expressed their expectations for the newly elected President of the Nigerian Optometric Association (NOA), Dr Obinna Awiaka.

Recently, at the 44th Annual General Meeting of the NOA held at the Balmoral Hall of the Federal Palace Hotel, the business mogul, whose charming manifesto of reuniting, rebuilding and rebranding the association captivated majority of the delegates, was elected President to pilot the affairs of the association over the next two years.

Dr Obinna Awiaka, a seasoned practitioner based in Lagos, promised to help standardize the quality of eye care delivery and advance the profession in Nigeria through education, advocacy and training. The new helmsman is resolute in helping tackle quackery and other vices that contribute to the increasing rate of avoidable blindness and visual impairment in the country.

Among those who expressed their opinion on the expectations for the new administration include the Registrar of the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria (ODORBN), Professor Ebele UzoDike, who tasked the new leadership to diligently promote Peace, Unity and Cohesion within the profession in order to foster purposeful achievements. The erudite scholar also tasked the President and his team to follow through on already-existing projects and programmes, with special emphasis on the NOA National Secretariat project, and see it come to fruition.

Dr Nkem Okoroafor, a seasoned, well-known member of the NOA rechoed the sentiments of the Registrar on embracing the culture of inclusiveness and unity across the cadres of practitioners in Nigeria. That, to him, will help maximize the contribution of members towards achieving the association’s objective. He tasked the new helmsman to make concerted efforts towards reintegrating aggrieved members, re-entrenching respect for elder optometrists, as well as internal financial reforms.

A senior and respected member of the NOA, Dr Franca Awurum, wants the team to work towards harmonising the disparity in service and welfare packages between private and public service practitioners, helping encourage practitioners to have an improved sense of job satisfaction and worth in society. She also tasked the team to localize access to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in order to encourage continuous learning and regular license renewal of practice by more members. These sentiments were echoed by former Vice President and National Coordinator of the Family of Optometric Mentors (FOM), who further called on the new leaders to quickly set to task in energising inactive chapters of the NOA, a declaration of state of emergency on the national Secretariat project, institution of FOM units in all chapters, standardization of internship programmes and resources, and institution of cooperative societies within the NOA family.

Chairman of the NOA in Imo state, Dr Chinaka Nwosu, wants the national Secretariat project accorded utmost priority, while standardizing billing procedures across Optometric Clinics.

His Lagos counterpart, Dr John Samssedi, agrees that carrying all stakeholders including young optometrists along, and providing operational templates for quality leadership and financial reforms at both national and chapter levels should receive vigorous attention.

Immediate past national PRO of the NOA, Dr Raymond Aguboshim, called on the newly elected officers of the association to be dedicated to duty and work assiduously in moving the association further up the path of purposefulness and impact.

Among those elected alongside Dr Obinna Awiaka to lead the NOA to include Dr Oluchi John-Isiodu (VP East), Dr Temple Nwosu (VP North), Dr Afe Dania (VP South), Dr Ogechi Nwokedi (VP West), Dr Victor Aliche (General Secretary), Dr Priscilia Imade (Assistant Secretary), Dr Chioma Nwogwugwu (Treasurer), Dr Genevieve Njiko Inno-Nwakpuda (Financial Secretary) and Dr Okechukwu Egboluche (Public Relations Officer).

  • Ogelle e-Learning will revolutionise education in Africa – Oparaugo

Ogelle e-Learning will revolutionise education in Africa – Oparaugo

    Our Reporter

Ogelle, Africa’s first user-generated video content platform, is set to revolutionise education in Africa with Ogelle e-Learning.

Ogelle e-Learning, which will be launched in the last quarter of 2021, comes against the backdrop of the urgent need to expand access to primary education and open the door to quality, relevant secondary education for Africans.

Tagged ‘Education Without Walls for All Africa’, it aims to make lifelong learning for Africans a reality as well as make it available and successive, given that people learn at different paces, in order to give an opportunity to those who are potentially left behind.

Speaking on the rationale behind Ogelle e-Learning, Osita Oparaugo, founder of Ogelle, said whereas there is a compulsory basic education cycle for the 5-15 years age groups in middle and higher-income countries, many of Africa’s youth are denied quality and accessible post-primary education owing to factors such as cost.

Moreover, the current education system in Africa uses outdated methods and is not preparing children for the future, he said.

“The future success of the African continent lies to a large degree in its ability to hone the skills and talents of its ever-growing youth population and now is the time to rethink secondary education systems, to ensure youth have the skills and knowledge they need,” Oparaugo said.

“For Africa beyond aid, there must be a shift towards science and technology, though the greatest challenges will then be the issues of cost, quality and access, teachers’ welfare and, in some countries, security,” he said.

The Ogelle founder said creating a knowledge-based economy through STEM education is a lifeline for Africa, ensuring the growth of a STEM-capable citizenry.

“With these issues in mind, especially that of cost, a burden which most families must weigh against other priorities, quality and accessible post primary education still remains an illusion to many of Africa’s youth, hence we developed Ogelle e-Learning: Education Without Walls for All Africa with special focus on English and STEAM as a solution to fill the gap,” Oparaugo said.

According to him, the fact that many young Africans are completing primary schooling, and many more will do so in the coming years, means that the number of youngsters who knock at the door of secondary education is vastly increasing, thus creating strong structural pressures on all segments of post-primary schooling.

For instance, an estimated 10 million graduates enter the African workforce each year and by 2040, the continent’s labour force is expected to surpass that of India and China.

“As a result, quality education is a central element in building an ‘Africa beyond aid’ and lies at the backbone of its development and enduring prosperity. Quality education also has a multiplier effect on achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals,” he said.

Giving further insight, Oparaugo said Ogelle e-Learning: Education Without Walls for All Africa will offer highly prepared and effective learning programmes for Junior Secondary School 1 to 3 and Senior Secondary School 1 to 3, as well as revision programmes for prospective candidates of competitive examinations like JSS3 and SSS3 certificate exams, the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Exam (UTME), among others. It would also offer a monthly live interactive session where students will have the opportunity to ask questions and get answers.

“We recognise that a percentage of African youth seeks foreign education, and we have made provision for such aspirants by also partnering with a professor of English based in New York, to teach spoken English and present a full syllabus for those taking SAT or the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL),” Oparaugo said.

“We focused on the post-primary education school system because for most young Africans, secondary education is the last schooling they will receive before entering the workforce. High quality, relevant secondary education which is accessible to all can prepare youths to enter the workforce, improve productivity, and spur economic transformation, unlocking a virtuous cycle of both human and economic development,” he said.

He said the digital age has reshaped the way teenagers learn, especially in Africa, which is why Ogelle brought education and entertainment on the same platform so that African youths can “LEARN + PLAY + DEVELOP”.

Launched in Lagos, Nigeria in April 2019, Ogelle, a user-generated content and subscription video-on-demand platform offering unlimited entertainment that is 100 percent African, targets 100 million general users and 5 million premium users by 2025.

It is working to become the highest aggregator of African resource and entertainment platforms in the next few years.

I never forget my Nigerian root – International model, Joseph Walters

    Our Reporter

For international fashion model Joseph Walters, modelling has been fulfilling as it has taken him around the world and afforded him the opportunity to meet the who’s who of the fashion world from icons to top fashion designers to legendary photographers.

Nonetheless, while he is living his dream in America, Joseph Walters (real name Babalola Otitoju Joseph) still feels nostalgic about home.

“When I was a little boy, I’d go to the beach in Nigeria because it was very close to my house. Growing up in Nigeria and having to eat African cuisines was very easy because the food was everywhere. But here in America, I do not live close to the beach and I will have to drive some miles to get African delicacies. I also miss my family members. Having to wake up and not having them close to me is a different feeling entirely,” he reminisced.

Far away from his native country, he has come to treasure his African heritage. “Many don’t appreciate it. It is embellished with great values such as a sense of hospitality, good relations, respect for life and religion, sanctity of life, respect for elders and authority, morality, language, proverbs and time, and so on. It’s not perfect but it is colorful and beautiful,” he mused.

Despite living in America, Joseph Walters still relates to issues back at home. “For example, during the #ENDSARS protest, I formed a group, a gathering of Nigerian in diaspora, and we organised a mini protest with the movement and we raised awareness also on social media using the END SARS hashtag,” he recalled.

He also expressed his view on the Nigerian government’s ban on Twitter. ”Social Media is supposed to be free for everyone to use. I’m not in Nigeria now but the act of the government towards Twitter infringes the freedom to use social media and it’s disheartening, more so because the reason behind the clampdown is childish. The Nigerian government should do better because this was the same platform they used during their electoral campaigns,” Joseph Walters articulated.

Exhibitions, trade fairs inspired my brand – KenMoore fashion boss

    Our Reporter

Founder of KenMoore Fashion brand, Mr Ogbonna Kelvin Chukwuma, has revealed how his journey to entrepreneurship all started.

KenMoore Fashion brand is gradually becoming one of the most sought-after designs in Nigeria, known for its unique staples.

According to the Chief Executive Officer, Ogbonna Kelvin Chukwuma his dreams to own such a brand came alive when he attended fashion shows, exhibitions and trade fairs in some European and Asian countries.

“I was inspired by the exhibitions and trade fairs I attended in some European and Asian countries. I got to know, that there is nothing cast in concrete as regards being a big fashion brand because not all the big fashion brands have factories. This motivated me to see the possibilities of having mine as a registered brand,” he recalled.

Mr. Ogbonna also revealed what gave him the confidence that fashion designing is a profitable venture that could put bread on the table, he said, ” I have been into business for a very long time, marketed and sold various brands that are not mine, in the course, I found out that setting up my own brand won’t be a regrettable decision, eventually, with my hard work and passion for the business I can say so far no regrets.

We have varieties of designs in KENMOORE brand that are fast selling due to the fact that we have maintained the quality over time.”
Just like every other growing business, KenMoore Fashion brand also encountered some initial challenges, however, the Founder found a way to scale through the hurdles.

He noted: “Standing out as a brand is not a one-man job, so the initial challenge I faced was getting the right people to work with. However, I was later blessed with people of same goal and mindset which has skyrocketed the company.

Sometimes a business does not require capital, what keeps a business striving and eventually successful is passion, understanding and patience.”

On the affordability of his designs, as well as his target market, Ogbonna hinted further, “As we maintain and improve on the quality of our products, yet we are making sure the prices are on a good side for buyers, such that anyone even with a minimum budget can always purchase.”
