Kwara’s N2.5bn cancer centre ready in 12 months – Rabiu

    Our Reporter

Construction of the N2.5bn oncology and diagnostic centre donated to Kwara State Government will begin in August and will be completed 12 months after, business mogul Abdul Samad Rabiu (ASR) has said.

The founder of the ASR Initiative announced this on Tuesday, adding the specialist facility would be the best in the West Africa region for the treatment of cancer.

“ASR Initiative Africa was initiated with the sum of $100m for each year towards education, health and social development in Africa.

“We have decided to intervene in health care in four states in Nigeria with an investment of N2.5bn in each of the four states,” the businessman said in Ilorin when the firm presented the prototype of the facility to the government.

“The project in Kwara State interests us very well. What will be built in Ilorin, Kwara state, will be a stand-alone Hospital which will be the largest in West Africa.

“This will go a long way in reducing the pains of our people. We have seen the seriousness of this Kwara State Government. We are ready and we will move to the site in August as directed by Alhaji Abdul Samad Rabiu. The project will be completed within 12 months.”

He was represented at the event by the Group Executive Director of the BUA Group Alhaji Kabir Rabiu.

The businessman said the facility would complement the “huge investments” of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq in human capital development and the health sector, describing the recently concluded intensive care unit (ICU) facility of the administration as a watershed.

AbdulRazaq commended the ASR chief for his huge donations and other supports to the state, including another N1bn to the University of Ilorin.

The Governor said the administration has been deliberate in revamping the health sector to make the state the go-to place for medical tourism in the north and some southwestern states.

“This initiative will be another major attraction for the General Hospital Ilorin and the state. It is going to become a big deal for healthcare and Kwara will become the hub of medical tourism especially in specialist care for states like Niger, Kogi, Osun and some parts of the southwest like Oyo and Ekiti States,” he said.

He added: “We cannot quantify the huge benefits of these infrastructures we are putting in place. At the backend of it is the potential for the IGR of the state.

“We will also be attracting experts in this field, while the research that will be done in the facility will open new frontiers in cancer management. What we’re doing here is a whole lot of masterpieces that will make Kwara State a cancer centre in West Africa.

“So, health is our priority. Since we came in, we have made significant impacts. We have very good people managing our health facilities and we are seeing improvement in the health sector.

“In fact, on COVID-19 vaccination, we topped most of the indexes. I must commend our team in the health sector for the advocacy and good jobs and for the management of our health facilities. We have seen serious turnarounds in the date of patient attendance in our hospitals.”

  • Nigeria close to 100 percent utilisation of COVID-19 vaccines, says FG

Nigeria close to 100 percent utilisation of COVID-19 vaccines, says FG

    By Moses Emorinken, Abuja

The Federal Government Tuesday disclosed that in few days, it would have utilised 100 percent of the nearly 4 million vaccines it received through the COVAX facility.

It dispelled rumours that the COVID-19 vaccine causes the site of the arm in which a person is immunised, to begin to magnetise objects or lighten electric bulbs.

Assuring Nigerians of the efficacy of the AstraZeneca to provide protection against the COVID-19 pandemic, it further stated that there is no difference in the efficacy of the vaccines supplied to Africa and Nigeria, from that used in Europe, America etc.

The Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NHCDA), Dr Faisal Shuaib, made these known in Abuja, during a joint press briefing on vaccination updates, with the World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF).

He said: “Today as I speak, 2,495,632 people have been vaccinated with the first dose, while 1,370,130 have received their second dose of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine in Nigeria. Overall, Nigeria has successfully utilized 3.9 million doses, representing 96 percent of the 4,024,000 doses of the vaccines received in the country. Nigeria is poised to achieve 100 percent utilization of the doses of vaccine it has received in the next few days. This is to ensure that people are protected against COVID-19, and normalcy is restored.

“We must take informed steps to guard ourselves from being misled by those who are spreading misconceptions about COVID-19 vaccines.

“Today I would like to make it very clear and demonstrate publicly that COVID-19 vaccine does not create any magnetic effect around the vaccination site or any part of the body for that matter, nor does it cause the body to light up an electric bulb. It is also a well-known fact that persons with wet, moist, or sticky skin can have objects stuck to their skin especially in smooth areas. Strong friction also allows for objects to stick to the skin. COVID-19 vaccines do not contain any metal – this is another fact! So how can it generate magnetic fields or light an electric bulb?”

He added: “It is evident that Nigeria has made significant progress towards utilizing the 4 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine we got from COVAX facility, and that is why our vaccine roll out has been described as the best in the African sub-region. As the country prepares to receive additional vaccine supply to commence phase 2 of its strategic vaccination plan, our attention has been drawn to, yet another level of disinformation targeted at discouraging people from seeking vaccination against COVID-19.

“On seeing this reality, the rumour mongers changed their narratives into saying that the vaccines used in Europe and America are not the same as the ones used in Africa. Again, as evidence has come to show, it is now clear that the COVID-19 vaccines used in Europe, America and elsewhere in the World are the same used in Nigeria and other countries in Africa.

“Let us not forget that this same falsehood of children dying after vaccination was spread about the Polio vaccine, but after many years, children who took the polio vaccine are still alive and have grown into adulthood and have their own children, as expected. There has not been any case of a child’s death that is linked to polio vaccination, and many more children have been born to discount another claim that polio vaccination would lead to infertility.”

Dr Gupta Gagan, who represented the Country Director of the United Nations Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF), Peter Hawkins, while lauding the government’s efforts to utilise 100 percent of vaccines received in few days, urged the media, healthcare workers, religious and traditional leaders, to come forward with accurate information about COVID-19 vaccines, dispelling the rumors and negative publicity about the vaccine.

    Our Reporter

‘A Better You’, a Non-Governmental Organisation based in Lagos on Tuesday, July 6 handed over a social impact project, a block of renovated classrooms, to the management of Shogunle Primary School, located off Balogun Street, Ikeja, Lagos. The renovated classrooms which is the first of its kind from the NGO had previously been dilapidated and in dire need of attention.

Present at the handing over ceremony were management and members of staff of the school, personnel from the Local Government and Ministry of Education, alongside volunteers and members of the NGO.

Speaking during the event, Adeniyi Oluwafemi, cofounder of the NGO alongside Taiwo Omirinde, noted that the project took about three weeks to complete was sponsored by individual members of the group. He noted that before their intervention, two classrooms in the newly renovated block were not habitable at all and it took individual dexterity from some of its members to create a facelift for the block.

“We took a survey of schools generally, and we realised the need to start somewhere. One of the reasons we chose this school is because we are not far from here. When we came in here, we discovered that there was a significant infrastructural deficit. We looked at it, we interacted with them, and we saw that these are very young pupils in primary school, which is the bedrock of education. So we decided that this is a viable project for us to start with. We interacted with necessary offices, got approval and we are happy to have completed our promise and now we handing over,” he said.

Speaking with members of the press in attendance, the Head Teacher of Shogunle Primary School, Mrs Nike Deji-Alao, expressed her joy at the good works of the NGO. The Head Teacher who joined the school in 2019 noted that the face-lift would spur rapid learning as the environment now looks appealing to both the pupils and the teachers alike.

In her words, “before they came, we had leaking roofs, rough surfaces, the floor was potholed. Now they have cemented everything and they did a resurfacing. They replaced the leaking roofs, the ceiling, and they gave us a beautiful place with an artistic design inside the classrooms. Since I have resumed here, we have been writing letters concerning the state of the building before God brought them to us to assist us. When you work in a conducive environment, you will love to come to work the next day because the environment is beautiful. You would love to teach.”

Representing the Local Government chairman, Dr. Mojeed Alabi Balogun; the Supervisor for Education, Ikeja Local Government, Mr Dania Taiwo Ebenezer, gave kudos to the initiative of ‘A Better You’. He applauded and advised other NGOs to do their best to assist the community.

‘I would love to commend this NGO for their effort, this is laudable because the government cannot do it all. I believe that’s why ‘A Better You’ thought it wise to give back to the community. We have to give quality education to our children, but we also have to provide a conducive environment. So that this can enhance the learning capacity and we will be able to deliver. I believe this is the beginning and I would enjoy them to do more. Honestly, on behalf of the local government executive chairman, we are glad.

  • England set to lift restrictions despite soaring cases

England set to lift restrictions despite soaring cases

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has set out plans to end social and economic COVID-19 restrictions in England in two weeks’ time, a test of whether a rapid vaccine rollout offers enough protection from the highly contagious Delta variant.

Johnson confirmed the government aimed to end restrictive measures on July 19, with a final decision to be taken next week. He said the step would eliminate formal limits on social contact, the instruction to work from home and mandates to wear face masks.

After imposing the most onerous constraints on behaviour in Britain’s peacetime history to battle the novel coronavirus, Johnson is betting the vaccination programme, which has weakened the link between infections and hospital admissions, can prevent the health service from being overwhelmed by a new wave of COVID-19.

Confirmed cases have shot up from about 2,000 a day earlier this year to 25,000 a day in the past week. But the number of deaths is broadly stable, at fewer than 20 a day.

Under the plans, nightclubs will be allowed to reopen and there will be no limits on capacity for hospitality venues. Social distancing guidelines will be scrapped.

“We must be honest with ourselves that if we can’t reopen our society in the next few weeks, when we will be helped by the arrival of summer and by the school holidays, then we must ask ourselves when will we be able to return to normal?” Johnson told a news conference yesterday.

“We will move away from legal restrictions and allow people to make their own informed decisions about how to manage the virus,” he added.

Johnson’s government sets health policy for England, but not for Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

Britain has suffered the seventh highest global death toll from COVID-19, and Johnson has been accused of being too slow to implement each of England’s three lockdowns.

But the take-up of vaccines in Britain has been strong, with 86 percent of adults receiving a first dose and 64 percent receiving two doses as of Monday, according to government data.

Public Health England figures indicate that the vaccines are highly effective in preventing the Delta variant from leading to severe illness or hospital admission, after two doses.

    ‘Very far from end’

Johnson also said that people under 40 would be invited for their second COVID-19 shots from eight weeks after their first dose, rather than 12 weeks, bringing it into line with the policy for over-40s.

He added that while he believed this was the best time to end restrictions, people should still be cautious and that containment measures could be brought back if needed.

“This pandemic is far from over, it certainly won’t be over by the 19th,” Johnson said.

“I didn’t want people to feel that this is, as it were, the moment to get demob happy … it is very far from the end of dealing with this virus,” the prime minister added.

Earlier, the new health minister, Sajid Javid, said the number of infections in Britain will rise significantly from currently levels.

“It’s important that we’re straight with the British people: cases of COVID-19 are rising and they will continue to rise significantly. We can reasonably expect that by the 19th of July, the number of daily cases will be far higher than today,” Javid told parliament.

    Opposition criticism

Labour Party leader Keir Starmer criticised the plan, and said that some legal measures, such as the requirement to wear masks on public transport, should be kept in place.

“Simply throwing off all protections when the infection rate is going up is reckless,” he told broadcasters.

The government’s emphasis on personal judgement was met with concern by scientists, who worry that hospitals and medics could be stretched anew if the Delta variant runs amok or new strains emerge.

“Allowing people to make their own choices on this is, effectively, handing control of the safety of such spaces over to the least informed, least caring and indeed the most callous members of society,” said Peter English, former chair of the British Medical Association Public Health Medicine Committee.

England’s Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty said he would still wear a mask “in any situation which is indoors and crowded” or “if someone else is uncomfortable as a point of common courtesy”.

And he hinted at possible tension between scientists and ministers, telling a news conference: “Ministers decide, advisers advise.”

A snap YouGov poll, meanwhile, showed that 71 percent of Britons believe face masks should continue to be mandatory on public transport.

  • Stimulus package created over 2 million jobs, says Fed Govt

Stimulus package created over 2 million jobs, says Fed Govt

    By Bolaji Ogundele, Abuja

No fewer than two million jobs have been either created or saved by the Federal Government’s COVID-19 stimulus package, Economic Sustainability Plan (ESP), office of the Vice President has stated.

Although the target of N2.3 trillion estimated to be spent under the plan has not been achieved just as the Federal Government appropriation part of that total being N500 billion has been completely released by the end of May, making it possible to attain several objectives of the ESP directly supporting a few million Nigerians.

While a total of 2,100,021 jobs have been saved and created all together, the breakdown of the figures indicate that 1.3 million jobs have been retained through interventions in the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) space, including the Payroll Support. The 774,000 jobs from the Public Works Programme and 26,021 Jobs from construction /rehabilitation projects across the country were among those freshly created.

According to a statement issued by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Office of the Vice President, Mr. Laolu Akande, these were some of the highlights that emerged from a virtual meeting of the Economic Sustainability Committee measuring implementation presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, yesterday.

Commenting on the implementation of the ESP, Osinbajo said the 100% release of funds appropriated in the budget for the programme was commendable and urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to expedite action on the release of funding components of the ESP that are dependent on financing from the bank.

According to the VP, “our budget funds were released in total. I thank the Honorable Minister of Finance for ensuring that it was done promptly, which means, in effect, that as far as the budget goes, we have been able to do what we practically promised to do.

“I know that if we were able to infuse N2.3 trillion into the Nigerian economy, we will not have the employment figures that we have today, we will not have the problems that we have today, they will be significantly reduced. Even with what we are able to do with the budget, growth figures at least indicate that things have not degenerated as badly as many had thought.

“So, you can imagine what we could have done if we were able to fully implement what we thought we would be able to implement. Unfortunately, this hasn’t been the case. We hope that in the next couple of weeks, we will be able to get some good response on more funds that we expect to get from the CBN which will help us to make some progress on the implementation.”

According to a summary by the Minister of State for Budget and Planning, Prince Clem Agba, construction/rehabilitation of 3,707 km Federal roads across the federation under Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) is at 65% completion.

In the agricultural sector, over 6 million farmers have been enumerated, 3.6 million passed the first stage of validation and 2.4 million scaled the second validation stage. The Minister added that 129,000 crop farmers and 38, 333 animal farmers have been profiled for the Interest Free Loan Support for the dry season farming cycle.

He added that under the COVID-19 intervention programme for the health sector, the establishment of 520 Intensive Care Units (ICU) Beds, 52 Molecular Laboratories and Isolation Centres at Federal Tertiary Hospitals is at 67% completion.

The minister also reported that 485 water points have been constructed/rehabilitated by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources across the federation.

Giving a summary of the funding performance, Prince Agba said N500 billion representing 100% of the total sum in the budget has been released to all the programmes of the ESP as at May 30, 2021.

Detailing the breakdown of the releases, the minister said the economic cluster received N202.462 billion which represents 100% of the appropriation to the cluster while N61.589 billion which also represents 100% appropriation was released for the creation of jobs for youth and women.

The Social Intervention Programme and Support to Persons of Concern received N34.957 billion; WASH Programme and Energy Support to Vulnerable Communities received N22.315 billion; support for building a resilient health system received N116 billion; support for the operations of Security Forces was put at N15.674 billion, and the 36 States of the Federation received N50 billion,” the Minister explained.

In the aviation sector, the minister said N5 billion has been released to support local airlines, ground handlers and other aviation allied businesses.

According to him, “7 scheduled operators, comprising Dana, Overland, Airpeace, Azman, Aero, Arik and Max Air received N2.84 billion; 20 non-scheduled operators, comprising Cargo and Private Jet Services received N949, 909,000; 5 ground handling operators, including NAHCO, SAHCO, Presion Aviation, Batuke Resources Ltd and Swissport Intl Ltd received N233,333,000; The National Association of Nigerian Travel Agencies received N196 million; Airport Car Hire Association of Nigeria (ACHAN) received N196 million; 7 In-Flight Catering Services Operators received N233,333,000 and Aviation Fuel Operators received N233,333,000.”

Updating the meeting on the implementation of the Agriculture for Food and Job Plan, the Technical Assistant to the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Andrew Kwasari, said the construction of 340 km of rural roads across the federation under Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) have been completed.

Esther Adekeye to artistes: Don’t burn bridges

    Our Reporter

Media personality, Esther Adekeye has advised Nigerian artistes to take industry relationships seriously, such that they would not end up burning bridges of people that crossed their parts.

The Estol Africa boss made this known in an article addressed to musicians.

“As big as the industry seems, the music industry is relatively small and requires a high level of due diligence when it comes to building and maintaining relationships. The music industry is a beautiful place, but it is also complicated, messy, and at times chaotic, exhausting and overwhelming but being able to balance a healthy work/business and personal relationship is key.

Relationship building/maintenance is the bedrock and cornerstone of Public Relations most importantly in the music industry, and should be taken seriously because one relationship gone bad can take streaks of damage control to clean up,” she penned.

She further counseled artistes to stop leveraging publicity stunt for fame.

“It is common Knowledge that negative stories attract more coverage and social shares than positive stories. However, reputations can be irreversibly damaged when the brand itself is the source of conflict.

“I know we have all heard the phrase ‘all publicity is good publicity’, it’s beneficial to truly understand that it comes with its own down sides too,” she added.
