  • Why Yahaya Bello is admired across ethic groups

Why Yahaya Bello is admired across ethic groups

    Our Reporter

Former Nigeria Aviation Minister and chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Femi Fani-Kayode was one of the dignitaries at Kogi state Governor, Yahaya Bello’s 46th birthday.

In his speech at a symposium at the statehouse in Ikeja, Fani- Kayode stated that Yahaya Bello has fulfilled his promises and is admired across religious, ethnic and party lines.

He also recounted how Yahaya Bello helped to put out a “fire” after being contacted by President Buhari.

According to him, people don’t like talking about the Kogi state Governor who is not like other politicians because they want to play down his achievements.

    Part of his speech reads:

“It doesn’t surprise me at all, that despite the fire that is burning in the various parts of our country, the North East, the North West, South West, South East and in the Middle Belt, Kogi State has managed to do so well under Governor Yahaya Bello and has excelled. He has fought criminality, terrorism, banditry, and evil that has plagued our nation head-on.

It takes a real man to do that. A man of courage, a man of strength, and a man that stands by his words which sadly most of our politicians do not. Yahaya Bello is different. The reason why he is so successful is that he is admired across regional, religious, ethnic and party lines.

My people all over the country, love him, talk about him and admire him. And he is also courageous and loyal to his own. Some say to a fault, but I say that it is a virtue and a blessing which in many respects, I share.

Recently, this country was almost set on fire. A lot of people don’t like talking about this because they want to play down on his achievements.

The country was almost set on fire and Yahaya Bello was contacted by the president to put the fire out and immediately to set to it. What did he do? I know because I was part of it. He reached out to people across the country; people in the North, East, West South, everywhere.

He called them all, and he took a personal initiative and he also reached out to me. When we met, I could see the passion for this country in his eyes. He said look if we do not get this right if this embargo is not lifted if guarantees are not given for the people of the North to come to the South and sell their food in peace without being attacked and killed, he has been told of the repercussion.
Therefore we must resolve this issue. He made a few calls, we made a few calls too then the issue was resolved.

He involved some of the governors, some of the leaders, there was change. All the people were saying was that if Yahaya Bello could keep his words and they are not attacked or killed, then they will go back to their drawing boards, lift the embargo, lift the ban, work together and live as one again.

And that was exactly was happened and peace was restored in the country.”

  • Osun shuts 600 illegal private schools

Osun shuts 600 illegal private schools

    By Toba Adedeji, Osogbo

The Osun State Government has said it closed about 600 private schools, especially primary schools that do not meet   the state’s minimum standard requirements.

Speaking during the Inter-ministerial Press briefing held at State Secretariat, Abere, the Education Commissioner, Folorunsho Bamisayemi, said the closure was part of the government’s effort to ensure sanity in the education sector.

“We have declared a war on mushroom schools. We have zero-tolerance for quacks in the system and schools that do not meet standards. We know the danger of mushroom schools because once anyone damages the education foundation of a child it becomes difficult to build a solid structure on it.

“Starting from the ministry, we have reviewed our department of schools to ensure greater efficiency. We have segmented the department to supervise basic and post-basic schools. Anyone who wants to start a school must produce a TRCN Certificate, among other requirements. We no longer grant licenses just because someone has spare funds to spend.

“We have set minimum standards and also given provisional registrations to some schools, that runs for a window of two years, during which we ensure proper monitoring. If after two years, the benchmark isn’t met, it attracts outright closure,” he said.

However, the commissioner lamented that the 11 mega schools built by the previous administration were underutilised.

  • Students praise Lagos Jobs preparation scheme

Students praise Lagos Jobs preparation scheme

    By Kofoworola Belo-Osagie

Students attending Lagos State-owned tertiary institutions and their teachers have praised the Jobs Initiative Lagos (JIL), a schemed aimed at improving the entrepreneurship and employability skills of students in the last two years of their studies.

About 8,000 students in the stipulated classes have benefited from free programme aimed at fine-tuning their soft skills, new market skills, soft skills, business skill as well as re-orienting their minds.

During the programme which has both online and physical training components, the students are exposed to resume Writing ,Work Etiquettes, Presentation and Pitching , Corporate E- Mail Drafting , Negotiations Skills, Interviewing  Techniques, Microsoft Suites, Microsoft Power Point Presentations, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft   Outlook and  Entrepreneurship  Skills development.

Students of the Lagos State College of Nursing (LASCON), Igando, who participated in the initiative (an improved version of the ReadySetWork) for the first time desicribed JIL as a catalyst to reduce brain drain affecting the country’s health sector.

Speaking at the end of the JIL training held within the College premises in Igando, which was organised by the Office of the Special Adviser on Education (OSAE), President, Lagos State College of Nursing Student Association, Timothy Bada, praised the government’s idea to extend the employability programme to medical students, saying the move has helped him to see beyond what he was taught in class.

He said: “This programme has actually enlightened me on what to do after leaving school. This is an addition to our profession because most of our senior colleagues often focus on caring for patients alone. I am not saying that is wrong because it is our primary responsibility, but when we put in some other extra activities that the community can recognise, it will bring more money that can help to cater for our needs.”

Another student, Alimah Biliamin, said she had learnt a key factor that could assist her to become employable after leaving school and possible areas that she could venture into within the health sector rather than going abroad.

“I have done some of the courses outside and I know how much I had to pay to get it. But with the government giving it out for free, one must commend them. I must appreciate the government for giving me this opportunity. And I appeal that all students should be made to undergo the training”, she said.

Student Adviser for the institution, Matthew Friday, commended the state government for the initiative, just as he stressed that it had exposed students’ to other soft skills required to become employable immediately after leaving school,

Assistant Project Coordinator, LoftInc Allied Partners Limited, the organisation collaborating with the state government on the training, Olatokunbo Aiyenimelo, told the students that the aim of JIL was to prepare them for life after school so they could get engaged quickly.

“To ensure that they become employers and good employees that can work effectively in the 21st century, we also trained them on how they could coordinate their data using different digital tools that could ease their stress at work,” she said.

Training for the JIL 2021 began last week for students of all the tertiary institutions.

  • JAMB boss praises Lagos for malpractice fight

JAMB boss praises Lagos for malpractice fight

By Kofoworola Belo-Osagie and Gbemisola Adesola

The Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, has urged other states to emulate Lagos State Government in checking examination malpractice.

Lagos recently fined 27 schools caught perpetrating examination malpractice during last year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) N500,000 each.  However he said Lagos ought to do more.

Oloyede, who was in Lagos Wednesday last week, to support candidates with challenges registering for this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), said Lagos  demonstrated exemplary leadership by sanctioning the schools.

He said it was the way to go in stamping out the menace of examination malpractice by some private schools which are desperate to showcase excellent results for their students without making commensurate efforts.

“I like what Lagos State did yesterday or day before by imposing N500,000 on some of these schools and some other restrictions but they should go beyond that. If I were Lagos State government I won’t impose N500,000 because the emphasis is not on the money I would just have deregistered the schools as an example and I will move all the candidates elsewhere because these are people who are destroying the school system.

“I believe that states government should go beyond Lagos government. Yes, Lagos government did and other states will cover up they will even be fighting the examination body that it didn’t happen. Lagos came out and impose 500,000 but to me that’s dirty money that should not go into our common pool. They should better go and give the money to motherless homes because the emphasis will be shifted to money. What they ought to have done is to arrest the principal of the school, prosecute the principal, prosecute the teachers and deregister the school.

“What they did for them is that they will not be able to register for two years but that’s not enough. Deregister the whole school, tell the whole school that once you’re caught in this thing the school will be confiscated by the government you do something that show that you are serious about eradication,” he said.

A statement by JAMB’s Head of Media, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, noted that the Board had been hard on examination cheats, introducing new innovations to fight examination malpractice.
