    Agency Reporter

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday inaugurated the Yaba Bus Terminal, located along the Muritala Mohammed Way, Yaba Local Council Development Area in Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu said the bus terminal was necessary for the daily transportation of the teeming population in the state, adding that the government was satisfied with the project.

He added the project was also in the interest of his administration’s drive to consistently provide ultramodern infrastructure to meet the transportation needs of residents.

According to him, Yaba features prominently in the Lagos State Transportation Master Plan because of its peculiar nature as a melting pot of various commercial and academic activities making it a tech hub.

”Its evolution over the years places a lot of responsibility on government to ensure that its dynamism and growth are sustained through balanced development.

”The facility being commissioned today is a world-class terminal from which buses will originate and terminate.

”I am happy to inform you that in the next 18 months, the Yaba Bus Terminal will be integrated with the Red Line Yaba Rail Station that is being constructed a few metres from this place.

”Once the rail line is completed, passengers will be able to choose the transportation mode they prefer to get to their destinations.

”Yaba Bus Terminal reflects our vision for regulated bus services, which the Lagos State Government currently champions,” he said.

The governor said that the goal of the administration’s Bus Reform Initiative (BRI) was to bring the bus transport system to international standard.

”I appeal to our esteemed citizens to protect this bus terminal and all other projects that are being provided for our good. It is our collective responsibility to protect our infrastructure.

”If you notice any abnormality, do not hesitate to say something about it. It is your civic duty to report wrongdoing and the destruction of our public assets/infrastructure to the security agencies and government officials for prompt action,” he said.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Frederic Oladeinde, said that the Yaba Bus Terminal would be the third to be inaugurated by the governor in the life of the administration.

Oladeinde said that though the contract was awarded in March 2017, but there was no significant construction activity on the project until recently.

”Since the governor is an affirmed apostle of continuity, he gave the marching order for the completion of this imposing terminal.

”Previously, the governor had commissioned the Oyingbo Bus Terminal and recently the MMA Mafoluku Bus Terminal.

”Other terminals at Ifako-Ijaiye, Ojota and Ajah are at different stages of completion but we are optimistic that they would be completed before the end of this year,” he said.

  • WHO raises concerns over decline in blood donations in Africa

WHO raises concerns over decline in blood donations in Africa

    By Moses Emorinken, Abuja

The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed concerns over the decrease in lifesaving blood stocks across the African Region.

It noted that average blood donation rate dropped by 17 percent, the frequency of blood drives reduced by 25 percent, while the demand for blood also decreased by 13 percent with the suspension of routine surgeries in some countries and fewer people seeking care in health facilities.

It therefore urged governments, nongovernmental organisations, and blood donation organisations to put in place the systems and infrastructure needed to increase the collection of blood from voluntary donors.

The WHO Regional Director for Africa Dr Matshidiso Moeti, made these known during the Commemoration of this year’s World Blood Donor Day.

She said: “On 14 June, WHO celebrates World Blood Donor Day to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products, like plasma. This day is also an opportunity to thank and appreciate voluntary, unpaid blood donors for this life-saving gift.

“This year’s theme is “Give blood and keep the world-beating” because fewer people have been donating blood during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there are still around seven million patients who require this life-saving product in African countries every year.

“Safe blood and its transfusion are key aspects in providing quality care to save mothers haemorrhaging during childbirth and people with serious injuries. Blood is needed for surgical procedures, as well as to treat severe anemia, inherited blood disorders, and other conditions. Blood can only be stored for a limited time and so a steady supply of donations is important to make sure adequate blood products are always available.

“Over the past year, blood stocks decreased in the African Region as movement restrictions and fears of infection hindered people from accessing donation sites. The average blood donation rate dropped by 17 percent and the frequency of blood drives reduced by 25 percent. Demand for blood also decreased by 13 percent with the suspension of routine surgeries in some countries and fewer people seeking care in health facilities.”

Moeti added: “As part of the COVID-19 response, 10 African countries are investigating the use of COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP) therapy. Among them, Ethiopia, Guinea and Mauritius have collected CCP for compassionate use and randomized control trials are ongoing in South Africa and Uganda.

“However, even during the pandemic, blood donors in many countries have made extraordinary efforts to continue to donate blood. Awareness campaigns backed by the collaboration of donor associations, civil society organizations, and armed and security forces, have led to good levels of voluntary donor recruitment in eight African countries.

“As WHO we are working with a range of stakeholders to improve access to quality blood supplies. We have partnered with the Coalition of Blood for Africa (CoBA), launched in November 2020, to drive this agenda, including engaging the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) and the private sector.

“The BloodSafe Program funded by the United States of America National Institutes of Health supports research to enhance the availability of safe blood in African countries. Through this partnership, research projects in Ghana, Kenya and Malawi are underway in collaboration with universities in the United States.

“In partnership with Facebook, we have set up a Regional Blood Donations feature, which connects people with nearby blood banks. The tool is now live in 12 countries and over 3.8 million Facebook users have signed up to be notified of blood donation opportunities.

“We are encouraging more young people to donate blood to save lives and to inspire their peers and families to do so too. In some countries, in line with national guidance, people aged 16 and 17 can donate blood with their parent’s or guardian’s consent, and in all countries, anyone over 18 can save someone’s life by donating blood.”

Showbiz success relies on strong PR strategy – Kehinde Ajose

    Our Reporter

Leading public relations consultant, award-winning journalist and founder of Visibility Solutions Media, Kehinde Ajose has averred that success in the entertainment industry is more about having a strong public relations and marketing strategy than just being talented.

Ajose who has consulted for several showbiz personalities noted that talent is good, but not only the requisite trait needed to succeed in the entertainment industry.

“To lose relevance is one of the scariest things an entertainer must not be caught in. I have consulted for and interviewed several talented showbiz personalities who were not able to profit from their talent because they only focused on the talent and ignored the part of the business. What Don Jazzy, M.I, Banky W sells is more than music. These showbiz personalities have grown to become strong bankable brands.

Their relevance is not tied to releasing music every now and then. People may love your music, but it won’t get you all the attention you need. A Naira Marley is less talented than a Wizkid or a Burna Boy. How then was he able to brand himself to national acclaim? It is a result of a well-thought-out content creation strategy. Attention is the currency of show-business. When you stop getting the attention of your audience, you lose relevance”.

Asked about the key factors needed to succeed in the showbiz industry, he said: ”You need to realize that as an entertainer, you are rendering a service which solves a problem for a particular audience. Nigerian rapper, Blaqbonez is an example of an artiste who has mastered the art of putting himself in the spotlight.
Don’t just focus on public relations only when you want to release a movie or an album. Your visibility is more important than your ability”.

  • How UNDP, EU, PharmAccess, others supported FG in combating COVID-19

How UNDP, EU, PharmAccess, others supported FG in combating COVID-19

    Our Reporter

Contrary to predictions by several bodies that the COVID-19 pandemic will hit African countries the hardest, Nigeria proved to be one of the least affected nations globally, in terms of mortality rate. This was not a coincidence as it took collaboration between the federal and state governments, the international community, the private sector, and several other key stakeholders.

On the 27th of February 2020, Nigeria detected its first case of COVID-19 and with over 150,000 cases reported since then, Nigeria’s response has been driven by coordination, collaboration, and solidarity. Some of the agents of these collaborations include the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), PharmAccess Foundation, Aliko Dangote Foundation, as well as several federal and state government health agencies.

Speaking on Friday, June 11, 2021, at a town hall event organized to capture views from the health, economic, education and human perspective on how the country has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu explained and urged members of the public to continue to stay safe to maintain the present victory over the virus.

He said: “We definitely didn’t have the public health infrastructure to manage a pandemic of this size or to even mitigate its impact as much as can be. However, we did the best with what we had. We had people in our workforce who had responded to Lassa fever outbreaks, to meningitis outbreaks, etc. and we deployed them for this. They started what has been one and a half years of consistent response to the biggest threat to health in our lifetime.

“We hope there won’t be another wave of this pandemic and we are doing everything possible to avoid it. However, we are continuously speaking to Nigerians. A third wave is not inevitable, it is up to us to mitigate the impact of this and ensure that there is not the third wave. Therefore, the Presidential steering committee made a very difficult decision a few weeks ago, to limit travels from a few countries that were having spikes in infections so as not to bring a new variant of the virus into the country. We are also trying to encourage everyone to take the vaccines.

Also, part of the panel, the Resident Representative of the UNDP, Mr. Mohammed Yahya reflected on how the organization helped the country in the heat of the COVID crisis. He explained how the UNDP provided technical assistance for the government’s response team.

“In Nigeria, some of the problems we saw was the fact that the health system is very limited in terms of overall investment, also the social structures were heavily reliant on informality i.e. the fact that people live in very close proximity. Also, the country’s economy which is heavily reliant on oil which meant a heavy reliance on the global economic system (which the lockdown and other restrictions had shut down), all that was posed a perfect storm for a potential disaster in the country.

“However, in response to these, the first thing that we did was to look at how we can support the NCDC and provide the technical needs that were available to us through our specialized agency. We also went to panels like the European Union to know how we can support the country. One commendation we have for the Federal Government was on the formation of the Presidential task force because it brought together all approaches to dealing with the pandemic in Nigeria.”

Speaking at the event, the Country Director of PharmAccess Foundation, Mrs. Njide Ndili, said the organization led in the integration of the private sector in the response to the pandemic. She said: “PharmAccess Foundation which is predominantly supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, provided technical assistance to the Federal and State governments of Nigeria, to build capacity for a strong healthcare system.

“We were involved in several activities as we were already in Lagos state, which was the epicenter. The first thing that was done is that we became part of the Lagos State Government’s COVID strategy think-tank to help develop the strategy to combat COVID. With that, we realized that there was a need for the involvement of the private sector. We did the landscaping to identify private labs that could quickly scale up to increase the testing.

“Lagos state very quickly contracted about seven private labs, and we extended that support through the UK government, to the NCDC. Also, developed an innovative application called LUSCII which helps one monitor COVID symptoms and connects you to a contracted facility, which would provide free testing and free treatment.

“We collaborated with Novartis to supply personal protective equipment (PPEs) to over 23 public healthcare facilities across all the six geopolitical zones of the country. And we were able to use that opportunity to promote and upscale the uptake of health insurance in the country. We supported both Lagos and Kwara state to launch their mandatory health insurance scheme.”

The town hall event for reflecting on Nigeria’s COVID-19 response and how to build back better was organized by the UNDP and attended by the Fmr. National Coordinator of the Presidential Task Force, Dr Sani Aliyu, the Ogun state Commissioner of Health, Dr Tomi Coker, amongst other health stakeholders.

Admisssion: FCE(T) asks JAMB for a wave in technical courses

    Agency Reporter

The Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka Lagos, has requested the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), to grant it a waiver in technical courses.

The Provost of the institution, Dr. Wahab Azeez disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos that such waiver would attract more prospective students to the college.

Azeez was speaking against the backdrop of the poor enrolment of students in the college.

He explained that the idea was to create openings to attract school certificate holders to the college and build a career in technical education.

“Enrollment has not been encouraging and we are not silent on it.

“So, what we did was to approach JAMB to give us a wave in certain technical and vocational courses.

“We are hopeful that our request will get positive response from JAMB and it will throw opportunity for more students to register for technical or vocational courses in our college.

“Technical and vocational education is where the money is.

“Students who finish from the college may not necessarily look for a paid job because of the training they have acquired,’’ he expressed.

According to him, part of efforts to project the image of the college, was to reach out to the Ministry of Education with the purpose of having direct access to Technical Secondary Schools.

Azeez explained that the college teaches related vocational subjects, which served as foundation for students, who may want to settle in the field.

“Five technical schools are here in Lagos, including our FCE, Technical, which prompted our visit to the Lagos Commissioner for Education.

“The focus is more on technical teaching, where our seasoned lecturers take them through oral, practical rudiments of vocational education and inculcate in them, self reliance,’’ he told NAN.

Azeez said that infrastructural developments, researches, academics, welfare, administration and social activities would continue to be prioritised, in order to make the learning environment conducive for students and staff.

According to him, construction of buildings for lectures, programmes and staffroom are ongoing, as part of measures to upgrade and bring the institution to an amiable state.

He said that under his administration, the science complex was being constructed and would be equipped with modern laboratory materials for the teaching of sciences and computer studies.

“Also, part of the ongoing constructions in the college is a technical workshop.’’

The management has equally taken steps to address issues of security water projects, he added.

The provost expressed optimism that the ongoing amendment bill on the Act that established the college, now at the National Assembly, would lead to the upgrade of the institution to a Federal University of Technical Education. (NAN)
